of the working class that same crisis was part of a ripple effect felt all across the world of global financial meltdown that many countries are still grappling with and europe were reminded about the struggle through ongoing protests against economic hardship and government corruption just days ago tens of thousands of people from all walks of life marched on the spanish parliament madrid against what citizens refer to as a crew of the financial markets and with the european markets on edge the last thing the year's own needs is uncertainty but elections in italy are stuck in limbo and causing just enough uncertainty to rattle the markets given rise to rumors of an inevitable collapse of the euro zone so help me talk about return of the euro crisis italy's shaky elections and ongoing unrest against government corruption elsewhere in europe i'm joined by author investigative journalist oh thank you so much so webster let's start with the candidates of this and italy's election berlusconi essentially is booted out of office his party is pulling in second place

i mean he's a pretty controversial guy here preside over a pretty bad period financial crisis is the fact that he's the only and stared candidate the fact that he's so popular still. i think. the thing about berlusconi is. he was the prime minister he's been prime minister longer than anybody else in post-war italian history and he is an anti-war candidate his recent campaign was stop foreclosures on homes stop foreclosures on factories and equipment lower raise the lowest pensions and roll back a very oppressive property tax the i.m.u. that he had had imposed the thing about berlusconi that attracts hostility from washington and london is his close personal relation with vladimir putin and the fact that this is been conquered ties this is not just a personal thing but this is the taking part in the north. stream pipeline right

and in comes this monti trilateral builder burge goldman sachs and he brings in a government of technocrats meaning austerity ghouls and what have they done fifteen months three percent more unemployment youth unemployment thirty seven percent production down ten percent orders down fifteen percent a disaster so that's the background for these elections and let's talk about. the former comedian a really interesting character here i mean if he won what could that mean. this is the. this is a part of the population that has basically gone crazy as a result of the austerity and you can understand i mean you can sympathize with them but good in lieu of course is a right wing cultural populist demagogue and he is also he says he's obscene he tries to have are. radical anti-establishment cover but when you

listen carefully he sounds very much like a tea party fanatic republican here in the united states i mean he's all anti government anti party all this stuff not so much anti bank for someone who doesn't want it doesn't want to attack the banks and then you look at his is policies of smash all unions what is that that's a bad bad thing. term limits attacking politicians infrastructure everybody in the world by now understands the way you get out of a depression is to have massive infrastructure projects you get people hired you get people working you restart the economy that's how you get an economic recovery good or says no there's a there's a project to build a fast rail from two into the french border goodloe says no and he's got black block he's got violent protesters out there there's a plan which i think is a great idea to build a bridge from calabria to sicily so you'd be going over the straits of messina with

the bridge. grillo says no part of the cheese comes from where the opera comes from great place they need a modern subway says no so it's a no no no every one of those tens of thousands of jobs so he's basically wrecking the economy and how does agenda twenty one fit into this good concept if you can imagine an italian working class family they've been attacked by monti and the i.m.f. and the european central bank and you know their taxes have gone up they're unemployed and they're looking for an alternative and they look at google and google or says energy austerity he says what they call dig deep growth i mean the word for that in english is atrophy or in italian atrophy they don't like to call that atrophy because a living organism at the end is the prelude to death you don't want to but that's that's exactly what it is so it comes from some french professors there is left to . and there are some others but above all it's this agenda twenty one right left

over from the rio conference at the beginning of the ninety's al gore this kind of stuff the idea that you can have energy austerity and believe it or not one of good laws planks is to lower the total consumption of energy in italy by ten percent so he wants less production less energy less raw material use and then he turns around and says i'm going to give everybody a thousand euros per month so the so nobody commits suicide but you can't do that in the woods you don't have the you have the wealth you don't have the resources to do that actually good thing everybody gets a guaranteed income and free wi-fi so it's like bread and circuses of the roman empire it sounds like bush is check to everyone after i got out of office here. this guy is all the world like a republic a couple of other things he wants to take if you're if you're a convict take your civil rights away just like a republican governor in the american south anchor babies. if you're born in italy

foreign parents you don't become a citizen so he's got racism going for him too he wants to do everything with referendums is that democracy the guy in european history who did that the most was napoleon so that doesn't sound very democrat let's move on to just the situation in public debt and italy this is just putting it in perspective for the audience of how bad this says amount to more than one hundred twenty percent of the country's g.d.p. i mean how can we i wouldn't i wouldn't make a big thing just verifying that it is the fact the joblessness the unemployed how do they get out of this at prices i mean all these candidates kind of seem like they're not really pushing for a viable solution here monty is the i.m.f. austerity right that's failed now he's out goodloe is this new energy austerity which if anything is even worse lose kone today said his main point is anti austerity of oh he doesn't really he means by that austerity for the government not for the private sector what you'd have to do in italy is look there are three

million unemployed and that's what draws on he's basically fuelled by the despair of three to four million unemployed so the answer would be i would say five to six million new productive jobs at union pay scales doing what doing exactly what could he says not to do build that infrastructure and this is how you could destroy could you could say look italians we have a program here five million new jobs we're going to rebuild the infrastructure we're going to do how is doing we're going to do fast rail we're going to do modern electric production we're going to do. y. five sure do that do all that and then lead pretty low say no because that violates my agenda twenty one program you could basically cut them off at the knees and we only have a couple minutes left of survey can help but talk about this in the broader context of how if the eurozone does collapse i mean if this crisis is unable to be quelled here how is this going to affect the united states let's always. the crisis of the

euro is artificial it's a result of a us british plan to destroy the euro so that the dollar and the pound could live and it starts with a very you know well organized attack on european government bonds now i regard the euro is like a convoy suppose you're in the north atlantic in world war two if you stay together you can survive but if you drop out of the convoy you're going to be destroyed because they're not everywhere and today if you drop out of the euro suppose you're greece or italy what's going to happen is goldman sachs will come after you with credit default swaps and they'll drive your currency to the point where it's worth nothing you'll have hyperinflation if you're germany they'll do the opposite they'll drive it up into outer space so that you'll be you'll be deflated to death so i would say stay in the euro but now we ought to have a movement and i think greece is the leading edge of this force the european central bank to cough up trillions of euros of credit to rebuild the

police. earlier this week i told you about the radioactive leaking from six underground tanks at hanford nuclear facility in washington state take a look at some of the coverage so far. but a massive leak that happened this morning at the nation's most contaminated nuclear site it's in south central washington state six tanks that hold a brew of radioactive and toxic waste they are leaking at the hanford nuclear reservation and for its on the columbia river it's had radioactive leaks from many years but the department of energy had thought it contained all those leaks not so well governor inslee says currently exposed no immediate risk to the public the

cleanup at hanford goes on it seems to be to do it will take at least forty years at a cost of more than one hundred billion dollars while that is one hefty price tag guess what those workers assigned to the cleanup may be out of a job come this friday because of none other than the sequester here's the deal sequestration is the result of congress' failure to produce a deficit reduction bill of last year's debt ceiling crisis because of this failure to act spending cuts of approximately eighty five billion dollars will be split evenly between defense and domestic programs come this friday unless a compromise is reached before that so the talk about the implications this could have on things like this nuclear cleanup and other industries i'm joined now by our team producer ramon galene dough from our l.a. studio thanks so much ramon. thanks for having me i mean so room before we even get into the sequestration stuff let's talk about this nuclear site two days ago i extensively covered the aspects of the site to give us

a sense of how bad this really is because i don't think the corporate media is really touching upon the extent of it. sure well i gave the department of energy a call today they've yet to respond though we do know as you mentioned in the intro there are six large tanks that are full of radioactive sludge are leaking right now no. week we got the word that there were six tanks that we get for that the deal he was only saying that it was one tank so there's some people wondering if there's more tanks leaking the department of energy has been has revealed so far what they have said is that up to three hundred million gallons of radioactive sludge may eventually leak out of just one of these tanks and we have to remember that hanford reservation there are fifty million gallons of nuclear waste through the facility so there's still a lot of concern that some of this nuclear waste is going to be getting into into the soil and eventually back into the columbia river which has unfortunately

suffered quite a bit of pollution from. unbelievable and also the bins to hold this nuclear talks that waste they expired twenty years i mean we're talking about waste that does not decompose for millennia i mean we cannot get rid of this so it's absolutely insane to think of them store in these bins that expire ramon let's talk about how much this costs one hundred fifty billion dollars price tag of course we know that's probably the lowest estimate possible until the year twenty ninety of course that's probably way more than that i mean let's talk about the sequester though and how this could affect this cleanup effort. right i mean well the governor of washington has called this a pretty perfect radioactive storm and it really is when you take into consideration that just at the same time that we're hearing that these tanks are leaking sludge there's a possibility that the department of ed or department of energy excuse me will house or furlough some of the workers that have been working at the hand for

reservation in order to clean this thing up and as you mentioned the department of energy is estimating that this project to clean up the site will cost something along the lines of one hundred fifteen billion dollars to the year twenty ninety but that price tag could go up very easily i mean the price tag to build the plant to turn some of the sludge into a more manageable. substance has already gone over thirteen billion dollars of budget and it's way behind schedule and costs continue to rise you know which has really caused a lot of concern among congress that are starting to question what it is that we're throwing that money at absolutely and i think the thing that's most irritating to me ramon is hearing them talk about this eighty five billion dollar cut as if it's the most serious thing the world really a total drop in the bucket when you're looking at our trillion dollar deficit in this country you know we're hearing from everyone these defense cuts are going to be a doomsday scenario for us how could we afford these defense cuts ramon we can't afford to cut our military bigger than the you know largest military in the world because

the next ten countries combined with us rhetoric and talk about why this is not the case sure well first we have to remember that these budget cuts are not necessarily a cut to the department of defense budget it's really only reducing the rate that it will be growing over the next decade also you have to remember that many of the people that are kind of scaring us about the effects that the defense cuts will pose are defense contractors and selves and congress people who happen to. have these defense these defense plants in their districts so we have to remember that there are some ulterior motives to some of these people who continue to tell us that our military is not going to be ready or that we're going to be losing a lot of jobs if these mandatory cuts do go into effect and you also did a recent report on about how the job creation thing is

a myth as well in fact the defense industry is one of the least you know it's one of the industries that actually creates the least amount of jobs can you talk about that sure well when this whole sequester is talks started last year there was this threat that you know a few million jobs could be affected if defense contractors were forced. back. progress or the project on government oversight has been doing some research over the last few years and while the number of dollars going to defense contractors has gone up exponentially the number of people that they employed has actually gone down and that's because some of these contractors and you know have common sense they're very smart they know that these cuts are coming so they've been were reducing their workforce for a while now and not only are they reducing their workforce to increase their profits but a lot of them are also going to robots to create some of these weapon systems that are being built while pocketing a record profits and bonuses ramon we have about a minute left it seems like there's always this looming deadline fiscal cliff and

pending cuts why is the media hyping up these really narrow focused things when there's obviously a much larger problem at hand here. no exactly and you know there's a lot of issues with that. the corporate media is created this republican democrat paradigm and they're really just arguing about the same thing they're not really trying to tell you the truth about it and the problem is that a lot of times these networks aren't able to criticize some of these interests that are getting government money because these are the same people that they have relationships both professionally and commercially their companies like g.e. are relying on defense contracts they're july they're relying on their advertisers so amongst these journalists a lot of times has it tends to criticize some of these programs that the government is spending on keep us divided and conquered from fighting against the establishment thank you so much ramona. your time you bet.

i do you know what kind of meter you have in your home no this isn't just my nerdy curiosity this is actually something that you should be considering. over recent years there's been a huge push by energy companies working in conjunction with the government to install smart meters what's a smart meter well it's an electric meter that energy corp's allege will streamline help power consumption is monitored in your home check it out. and this is my power i used to watch my bill only once monthly came in and it got so high i thought i was power in the street from then i got smart meter they have a lot of little graphs that tell you on an hourly basis how much energy to show that to the family i said you see despite that means a lot of money so let's bring out my own our family now is trained we're not using

them. that's why in my house i'm known as the energy come energy chapala sounds terrifying and actually not too far from reality i get this power companies have been sending people to homes across the country to switch out the old analog meters for these brand new all digital smart meters the little guy that used to come to your house to mentor measure energy usage they write it down a little notepad and send you a bill the end of the month well that little guy is out of a job he's been replaced with smart meters equipped with r.f. chips technology that allows power companies to monitor these devices without actually ever coming to your home so just how smart are they well not only do they rapidly record information by the hour but they can determine just what type of energy you're using think about that for one second it may not seem like too much intrusion but consider this energy corporations will have precise data on your daily routines when you wash your clothes when you watch t.v.

when you leave your home and when you come back and it's the notion that they know what you're doing and when you're doing it isn't disturbing enough it's worse because these devices are also capable of controlling regulating and even rationing your energy use take this for example your running your ac during those hot so. months and the power company decides that you're using just a little too much power well they can take it upon themselves to the lower it regardless of ever if you're willing to pay more for that extra usage to the point to consider is what these companies can do with this information. once they share it with law enforcement it can and believe me it will be used against you cops will be able to know just what you're doing at all times in the privacy of your own home who needs a telescreen where you have a smart meter secondly these corporations can sell this information about our daily lives for data mining and advertising it's disturbing on so many levels yet

these little surveillance units are being implemented across the country without the public's consent and in many cases without their knowledge that there are even being installed and it's leading to a ray of problems check it out. this is a smart meter a user's electromagnetic frequency to send information about power use this gets rid of the need for meter readers and notifies the power company about outages that some say such meters are making them sick i could understand why i was feeling so fluid first a warning and so i came back and tried to put my hand in front of them like that then a scuffle and he just kept pushing me away pushing me away and what was the guy after this meter and electric meter he wanted to replace it with a new one like this a so-called smart meter problem was still machar me to want to keep her old one she had put a warning signs to leave it alone but the worker wouldn't listen so charming grabbed her gun her lights around her electric meter has stopped spinning but this is not

due to a storm or for failing to pay her bills it's because there's still some photographer who has refused to allow a new smart meter in her home result a lineman pulled up and disconnected her from the grid yes companies are actually third rate in the shut off your power if you refuse to allow a smart meter to be installed in your home look guys it may seem like you don't have a choice in this but these meters are not mandatory but you don't have to subject yourself to unknown health for a certain these two till it costs you most certainly don't have to give up your. privacy to private corporations where you have to deal and be bold enough to say now. live.
