throughout the developing world free trade agreements are packaged with the promise of jobs and economic stability but in the case of the small central american nation of el salvador trade agreements and foreign investment protection treaties have given mining companies like canada specific written more rights than the citizens and even the government c pacific rim was allowed an exploration license to mine in el salvador due to the efforts of anti mining activists the government ultimately rejected pacific room's application to begin mining so the corporation fava lawsuit against the government of el salvador asking for more than one hundred million dollars in damages that's not all companies also allegedly made violent threats against activists however one woman. more outis a member of the national roundtable against metal mine in el salvador has been one of the few voices fighting mining companies since two thousand and six recently she

traveled to canada to speak to citizens about the effects of mining on the lives of salvadorans and the environment in which they live. that carries photographs of the really anti mining activists she once worked with who were murdered in two thousand and nine and whose cases remain unsolved there are stories ringing alarm of how dangerous it is to be a vocal opponent of multinational conglomerates in el salvador so for representing the voice of thousands of others who are silenced and for taking a stand a protected environment that is increasingly degraded by foreign interests salvadorian activists and if you've got to be a morale as you are my hero today so she's the hero was the villain well while we're on the subject of mining for minerals against public support today's villain recently signed into law a measure that would allow for less regulation on iron mining in the great state of wisconsin be none other than governor scott walker see for yourself.

a wall risking the health of wisconsin residents and the environment and that's why you wisconsin governor scott walker are my villain today. by now you've probably seen the headlines about the small mediterranean island that was rocked in the past week by an ongoing financial crisis of course i'm talking about cyprus a nation that was so deep in debt it was on the verge of collapse. i would have had implications not only for euro zone countries but also for the global economy at large that collapse was barely averted today in a last minute deal with international lenders that called for a thirteen billion dollar rescue plan and while it will protect the assets of some the deal will require heavy losses for others so what effects will this proposed solutions have and one of the concerns of those in cyprus moving forward to talk

about all that and more earlier i was spoke to tests are still correspondent who's been reporting from the ground in cyprus i first asked you to talk about what it's like there and how people have been dealing with the crisis take a look. well you know for the past week it's really been an emotional roller coaster for them if not in exaggeration they woke up one morning to find out that they're going to be toxic all their deposits even if you have one hundred euros in the buy for example you're going to get taxed six point seven five percent and they really were up in arms about this they found it very unfair to impose a widespread type which was never been done before and after that the country turned to russia you know tried to find help because the problem of voted no to this package the word they were willing to accept this kind of a widespread tax on that the citizens deposit and what they took to russia they were turned down so there was a lot of disappointment. the next step the next day they find out that the european

central bank that said that the liquidity would be cut off if they had no deal with the i.m.f. and now this kind of bad news one day one day after the other they really had no way to figure out how to plan for their lives really lives out people going out to the a.t.m. trying to get as much cash as they could. limits on the withdrawals that they were going to make we saw a lot of business is empty business owners not having cash to give to to their customers it was really a very difficult week for them they were up in arms out of the street not understanding what was going on in the country and for the people who might not know the specifics of the situation the deal proposed. can get this corrected from you if you have over one hundred thousand dollars in the bank you're helping in part to pay for the bailout nationalizing your savings and people who have under that much their money is safe can you just break that down really quickly ok first of all cyprus has to put up five point eight billion euros in order to get a ten b.

billion euro bailout from you know in order to do this they have to raise that money and what they came up with is just imposing a haircut on the forces above one hundred thousand euros so anybody who has that amount in the second largest that is the popular bank of cyprus they're going to have to take the loss so whether they like it or not and those below the one hundred thousand euros this money will be transferred to another bank called the bank of cyprus and this will be called the good bank so it will be tough but let's not forget that the initial proposal of the european union was a tax everything so even if even if right now those a possible of a thousand are safe. has been done that they realize that it would push comes to shove such the calling measures could be imposed on themselves and also their capital controls agreed upon by the parliament here right now the amount of money that they can move in and out of cyprus or the money that they can get from cash machines they have a limit today it's one hundred euros over the banks are still closed they don't know when it's going to open if it will ever open again so you can imagine the

uncertainty that they have despite the deal that the country has already clinched with before i can even imagine what it's like there on the ground people panicking reminiscent of of just in this country when people were taking their money out of the banks during the great depression how the protests escalated or have they af. the latest deal are they expected to escalate more. you know what i think the biggest the most emotional protest installed by the after that first announced that everybody is going to be taxed because this was really shocking for them unexpected they came out into the streets and then it kind of died down and many people had different viewpoints is that bringing them to the streets some are worried about their jobs and are worried about their savings some didn't understand how they were going to have cash to survive the next few days so there were different groups of people coming out of the streets and but now there's a new deal we think that people are are still angry they're planning protests still this time the fact that they feel that they actually got of course

a deal started off with started to begin with because right now with this kind of here. some say forty percent on that hundred thousand euro deposits imagine small and medium sized enterprises are going to be hit by this we're not just talking about over guards you know we've been talking a lot about russian oligarchs with money or british nationals with the money in the bank so we're talking about small business owners to be affected so we can expect them to be up in arms and the bank that was restructuring we expect jobs to be cut their we've already seen workers from that that bank coming out of the street just getting hysterical really you know some of them just collapsing asking where the hell are we going to get the money oh yeah i mean one hundred one hundred thousand pounds that's not that much money i mean we're talking about people's savings here that are in the middle class there are a lot of factors at play here we're hearing a lot about these oligarchs who had invested in the banks the government of cyprus alternately i mean has to be placed at the blame for allowing this to happen where people placing the blame that are on the ground in cyprus right now and how can

they gain trust to move forward after this horrible time you know i think the people i've spoken to a lot in the past week that i've been here there's just a lack of trust. their whole government they've lost trust in the e.u. in the euro group their partners in europe you know they say you know we're part of a. but we feel that they feel that they have been cornered into a position where they had no choice but to accept something very difficult so their view towards europe really has changed right now and they don't understand how they can be part of a you know what kind of a union this is going to be and also i think they were disappointed that no one really came to help them to their aid and they say the people say that look it's not our fault it's not their fault ordinary workers trying to do the jobs those people who got their banks into trouble where are they now are they actually experiencing the same things that they are here on the ground so that's kind of this it's gone there's no confidence with people on anything anyone says to them and to wrap it up we have about

a minute left but what message does this send to people around the world who are watching i mean we're seeing things play out in iceland in greece all different outcomes here what kind of message is what's happening inside. you know the whole world is watching you've got a whole slew of reporters with from all over the world really watching because this is not just a story for europe it really is a global story i will talk about the relative calm that we've seen in the. after having gone through this euro zone crisis for almost three years now there was a relative. calm and all of a sudden you see cyprus creating the ripples across the union and the most important thing here is knowing that the leaders are willing to cross a red line. on small holders they say you can't take this back even if right now the leaders in brussels are saying look we came up with a deal to protect small. but they've already pushed that line and people aren't trusting them anymore and now what's happening is people are. wondering are

and corn count for the base product almost all processed foods in the u.s. and they come in the form of soy flour protein lexington corn flour starch or high for those corn syrup as that is all that sounds what i'm about to tell you is just downright bizarre you're also eating wood yeah you heard me right wood and the f.d.a. is no limitations on how much wood companies can put into your food it's called cellulose and it's a virgin wood a poll that's been processed and manufactured to use in multiple products and food it's labeled cellulose gum or powdered cellulose but according to the j. retton meyer usa the main company that supplies it these fibers are not only used to extend the shelf life of processed foods they're also used for plastics cleaning products kitty litter glue paints among many other things but the company claims that adding cellulose to your food is a good source of fiber for your diet you can also reduce your fat intake and

although that may be true it's quite disgusting thing that we're ingesting wood pulp simply because it's thirty percent cheaper than real food and just to name a few companies using this wood filler pepsi kalaw goes weight watchers general mills sara lee kraft dole nestle and pretty much. all fast food restaurants now it isn't shocking enough that you're eating would you might be a little startled to know that you're not eating real food as well yup products like pancakes cereal yogurt with quote real fruit leaves consumers to believe that they're getting their daily food intake but the center for science in the public interest has revealed that the majority of these fruit products are just balls of sugar and soybean oil mixed with food coloring and miniscule bits of dried fruit so whenever you see a label that says made with real fruit it's pretty safe to assume that you're just sitting clumps of sugar so how. this well they just say that it's flavored either

naturally or artificially and the f.d.a. puts the burden and tiredly on you you should know what you're eating despite the slick and misleading propaganda by these food companies on their labels all right so if you're not up by now running for the hills sit tight while i go over yet another. meat and no i'm not talking about horse meat i'm talking about how a majority of processed meat in this country is true with ammonia yes a company called beef products incorporated how did genius idea of how to radek at the coal epidemic inject beef with ammonia you know the same chemical that's poured all over public restroom floors to kill bacteria that stuff is more than likely to end up in your hamburger and your kids' school lunch and sadly while it claims to kill it. it doesn't but here's the real kicker the f.d.a. doesn't require ammonia treatment to be labeled on meat instead it's innocuously called a processing agent on the label don't worry the u.s.d.a.

has validated it safety based on the company's word alone having conducted any independent tests of their own what a shock but say might not eat red meat what about chicken aside from the array of hormones being pumped into chickens do you know that paltry is also being fed to caffeine the active ingredient in tylenol and benadryl banned antibiotics and even arsenic this is all revealed when scientists analyze chicken feathers that carry an imprint similar to a piece of human hair one study in the environmental science and technology journal found that chickens are routinely being fed illegal antibiotics that breed super bugs and they're legal for good reason because antibiotic resistant infections kill more americans every year than aids corney infectious diseases society of america. and when this was exposed the industry claimed that benadryl tylenol and prozac

reduce the chickens anxiety but then they're also fed to caffeine so they can be awake longer spending more time eating and growing fatter that makes sense doesn't it and last but not least the journal science of the total environment found that nine out of ten broiler chickens in the u.s. are fed arsenic yes arsenic a chemical element as deadly as cyanide look by now i hope you realize that these companies don't care what they're putting in our foods and if we just mindlessly consume them we're all just guinea pigs helping corporations get richer as we get sicker. like you want to. or she going to be like. oh. wow. so guys time to talk about big money big oil just this past friday the u.s. senate passed the hooven amendment non-binding amendment that pledges the senate

support for building the infamous keystone x.l. pipeline across the u.s. remember this is the u.s. senate that currently holds a democratic majority and even though historically democrats have been the largest proponents for the environment when you have donors to pay back one of your principles just doesn't quite cut it in fact oil change international reports that the ten original co-sponsors of the hovan amendment received an average of eight hundred seven thousand dollars from the fossil fuel industry guys that's eight million dollars total apparently enough money to manipulate the policies of our government in fact it's something that canadian actress evangeline lilly told breaking the set at the forum climate rally that she feels very passionately about take a look. at least this terrorism coming in from the outside world . to the terrorism that's going on within this country which is big money loyal.

to the government. holding their hands behind their backs and holding all the cards and tying up the government is entitled to the president and his choices so to talk about the implications of oil corporations on palsy and what we can expect at this pipeline goes through i'm joined now by dr sacks national wildlife federation is legislative director thanks so much for coming on thanks for having me so how exactly is this pipeline expected to affect the communities that it does go through both health and the environment short well the pipeline runs from hardesty alberta canada to steel city nebraska and what's going to happen with this pipeline is it all run along some of the most important environmental areas in our country or sand hills are underground for which is the source of drinking water for countless americans we're concerned that this pipeline not only is going to harm environmental habitat and displaced people but it also could. potential lead to catastrophic environmental disaster if ever there was a spill and even a bigger problem is what does this mean for global warming and people all over the

world. and of course the argument made by the giant oil and gas proponents is that it will create thousands of jobs i mean is this is even true we've seen varying numbers on the jobs first trans canada the company who's supporting this pipeline said it would be twenty thousand jobs our most recent estimate has said between fifteen hundred jobs somewhere in that neighborhood that's what cornell university said but that's just temporary jobs for construction at the end of the day we're talking about thirty five. and counted again has said this themselves yeah that's a good point i mean a lot of people as this one it's really just the initial construction of the pipeline that's really the job creator do you think that this message resonates more with people that when they just hear this permeated it's a job creator and sort of things that they can see tangibly like the environment that they're affecting sorry we're in a climate right now pardon the pun where people need jobs in america so certainly that rises to the top but what we need to think about in the keystone pipeline discussion here is we're talking about

a risk reward or the short term jobs in these thirty five permanent jobs worth the long term impacts we'll see from climate change from just placing people in the other associated potential problems and who what are the main backers here i mean obviously we know the koch brothers are suited to gain enormously from the pipeline i mean what industries are really pushing this through because we certainly don't hear the full picture from the media right now sure will obviously this started with the oil companies who want to build it and trans canada is the primary company out there over time other companies are refineries have joined in and then once the jobs argument really started to permeate we heard unions and other people begin to chime in as well and as we know as i just mentioned the hope in them and then the symbolic victory for keystone proponents but when you look at this coupled with let's say for instance the state department report that says the pipeline would have no negative effects i mean how worried are you that the fight it's already over on this well it's important to remember that this decision rests solely with the president of states and secretary kerry and it's up to them so it's certainly

unfortunate that we lost this but we've seen other losses in a year and a half ago the congress said the president should make a decision a media lead on the pipeline and he responded by saying no we're confident that this president understands the impacts involved if you watched his inaugural address or his state of the union after the inaugural he made incredible statements about wanting to fight climate change you know how i mean come on he's making incredible statements but where is action is josh i mean and the biggest rally ever . against the pipeline for you know for curbing back climate change president obama was golfing with two giant oil and gas executives in florida totally ignoring the forty plus thousand people at his doorstep pleading for him to listen i mean really do you really think obama is going to be the halting what his buddies want to push through well the president you know reads the newspaper to he didn't have to be in the white house to hear the rally and i'm sure he knows all about it you know we've heard certainly from his staff that he paid attention the president was elected by

a young voter base who cares deeply about climate change he's trying to build out organizing for action now also with constituents who care deeply about climate change and he's a smart guy and he understands what's going on so we've seen some bad signs recently but the game isn't over till the president makes a decision and we're confident he's going to make the right to say well let's you know i can't help but just call no attention the democratic leadership in general because at this rally that i just spoke of joel stein was blocked from speaking it seemed like it was just one giant obama rally at obama's ignore pretty much the pleas of all americans since he got in office are you guys just setting yourself up for failure is the environmental movement as a whole setting yourself up for failure by continuing to ally with democrats who show no sign of moving any forward on this legislation the republicans do sure well we don't get to pick the issues the issues pick us and this is one that this is a fight that needs to be fought you know the head of nasa dr james hansen has said if this tar sands reserve has tapped it's game over for climate change so we're going to continue to fight this fight and again it doesn't matter where the

democratic senate is it matters what the president says and we continue to push on him and we're hopeful that he's going to do the right what are you doing to push on him well we're working with thousands of activists across the country my are going to zation has four million members and supporters and they are all screaming at the top of their lungs to let them know how important this is is there a deadline set forth for when you need to make a decision there are there is not a formal deadline but there are pieces along the way so right now we're in a comment period the president. state department recently put out something called the environmental impact statement and we're in the midst of a forty day forty five day comment period where our members are out there going crazy sending comments in postcards letters e-mails letting the administration know where they stand on this and they're joined by partners from across the country and outside the country well hopefully you won't be playing golf too much to ignore the comments that you were decisions making. legislative director national wildlife federation thank you thank you and thanks everyone for coming in tuning into the
