the photos of two suspects wanted for questioning in connection to the boston marathon bombing police officers have now positively identifying the two men they are the ones there you're looking at on your screen twenty six year old tom knife and he's the man in the black wearing a black back pat backpack and one thousand year old. is the man wearing the white hat and a tan backpack now police officer shot and killed the older brother tom ridge line early this morning but just how far is he got away the events from last night leading into today have been so fluid that the headline is constantly changing so i was joined just a little bit ago by our teams under stasia charkha who is near boston we first talked about what happened last night well maybe you know last night at around five thirty pm local time the f.b.i. released pictures of the two suspects who now we know are two brothers twenty six year olds to milan son and nineteen year old just hearts on these two brothers

basically for after the photos were released ended up getting out of their hiding getting into a seven eleven which they robbed hijacked a car releasing the person to whom that car belonged and got into a. car chase with police as a result of which the older brother to middle on was died out of hospital around one thirty five am local time with several gunshots from police he was said to be carrying an i.e.d. on his body and the younger brother nineteen year old europe are is currently on the loose with police trying to locate his whereabouts as we speak and this is certainly what everybody's eyes are on right now the possibility of joe hart being out found any minute any hour in the in the days to come now on especially i hear a lot of action and commotion going on behind you what is the current situation.

well the current situation megan is basically while the authorities are trying to locate a needle in a haystack the entire greater boston area which includes millions of people is on a full complete lockdown as officials go from door to door trying to find this nineteen year old suspect in the boston bombing case and certainly this has created quite a commotion and fear in the area people are staying inside their homes businesses are closed homes are closed there's no public transportation available and of course this is done to make it as easy as possible for officials to try to catch the heart make sure he doesn't get away but also for security reasons because there are still concerns as we speak that further devices might be located throughout the area the investigation is currently trying to find out whether possibly any other people might be associated with the two brothers that are now officially the two suspects one on the loose so this is certainly a peak this situation right now while the greater boston area remains at

a lockdown officials are trying to do whatever they can to locate this one two year old nineteen year old as quickly as possible and on a safiya we're hearing about a third suspect or person of interest the one that's not actually related to the sars nies brothers what do you know about that. well you know megan this is something that is a very fluid this is reportedly officials are looking into this possibility no official statements when it comes to that have yet been made they are concerned that a certain person or more could be associated with the brothers they're trying to find this out as we speak so this is certainly something that has not been officially confirmed as of yet now i want to show you how these events occurred in all over boston the boston area so as you can see here there are a lot of areas that are affected obviously watertown the shoot out itself happened at mit and then of course that was all just across the river from where the boston

marathon bombing happened can you talk a little bit about how the community is reacting to all of this chaos that is playing out and that has played out over the past few days. well made in the community certainly has been in a state of shock ever since the bombings took place on monday for several days there was no knowledge in terms of who the suspects are and the f.b.i. was working around the clock to try to locate the possible suspects as we do know they were eventually tracked down through a surveillance video from a department store and identified as these two brothers that are said to be of a chechen origin they are they have been living in the united states in two thousand and three years here they certainly. people who know them in the community who when seeing their faces were completely shocked people they went to school with people they worked with family members even like you mentioned you know the uncle just in complete shock and the community itself is right now really in a state of fear because of the lockdown and because of this teenager dangerous

reeling from my car going through here and being a mother i just do what i can say is i am pretty sure i am like one hundred percent sure that this has a set up. my my true fans are really innocent and i know that my. neither of them never never have talked about whatever they are saying about now and when what i want to say is my books most of them were my my youngest one was raised actually like raised from atheist he was raised in america and my oldest son he is. a really proper good raised and in our house never nobody talked about the terrorism and my son tom iran really. got involved in the region. like i really do resist politics five years ago so he started

liz wall r.t. now before we continue with our coverage i want to make it very clear that right now we are only going to report the facts that are coming in and we are not going to speculate about the means or the motives of these two men the fact is that we don't know why these two individuals did what they did whether or not it was an isolated attack or part of a bigger network we don't know what current connections these men have with the republic of chechnya so we want to be very careful in describing these men now that being said the chaos playing out in boston will undoubtedly have international repercussions for a look at the bigger picture of these events i'm joined now by john king is the president of the arc angels group john ah thanks for joining us first of all a lot of media began quickly calling this an act of terrorism on monday after the bombings actually happened president obama of course was very hesitant at first to call it such an attack how do you classify something as a terror attack is it method is it victims is it the perpetrator or is it some type

of combination. well and thank you for having me it's one of the most difficult questions i think that we're facing in our legal system today which largely surrounds the fact that we have passed almost countless pieces of legislation that define different things as primitive acts and then almost on a net basis. we pick and choose what acts we're going to hang the moniker or the mantle of terrorism onto as actor typically define it you can look at any of the more than dozen said role definitions here and you know if states of terrorism this would most likely be considered a low level tactic for ferrous was sure now these men are from the chechen republic area tomorrow and of course was born in russia john harwood was reportedly born in carriages than the family lived in dagestan in the russian federation for numerous years before reportedly leaving the country back in two thousand and one

around that time anyway so obviously this has convoluted the ideas that we have right now so let's talk about the fact that these men are not from the u.s. how has that added an international aspect of these attacks one of the persons i think. that the western world need to understand is that chechnya is a part of russia certainly going back to sixteen sixty three russia has been in the into force for stretching into the then tsars russia it were part of the soviet union it didn't be part of the russian federation and the jacksons themselves originally began with an independence oriented effort. with regard to the resistance to the russian federation in the soviet union collapsed they certainly thought that was their opportunity russia has worked hard our to keep them in the russian federation and it wasn't until early one nine hundred ninety five when bin laden himself sent in kind of his top level people largely to try and

again conscript the chechen to greater chechen cause for independence into the greater global jihad that al qaida was pursuing at that time and al qaida has continued to try and keep its foot hold in that chechen conflict ever known john from what i've been hearing in the news of it doesn't really seem like u.s. intelligence agencies have previously been evaluating the chechen republic as a hotbed for american enemies obviously you're saying that al qaida has been recruiting there well the fact that these two men came from the surrounding area changed the america's government's attitude toward the region and more specifically its military focus. of the u.s. government reacts and how the military reacts certainly didn't something that. i have in the real insight into i would say that since the collapse of the soviet union of december one thousand nine hundred one the united states has continued to

deal with russian issues based on its old cold war paradigm and to a large degree the us originally came out in support of the chechen cause for independence it was in the enemy of my enemy is my friend paradigm and the russians continue to be perceived that is inherently bad inherently evil if you will going back to the soviet are and. the american perspective was that any group of people trying to rescue their independence from russia therefore must be good and this is all a significant measure of u.s. government support even to the extent of providing political asylum to one of the top chechen leader there is who was at the time winter indictment for terrorism in russia ok now as soon as the information came out that these men are of the islamic faith many afghans speculating and using the word such as jihad and martyrdom how

can we be sure that just because those men are muslim that their religion motivated days attacks or can we be sure at all we we really can the overwhelming majority the vast majority of the chechens are in fact muslim and they have been muslim since the nineteenth century well entrenched in islam since that time and again it's important for people to understand that the original efforts of the chechens was solely for independence from gratia it was really not in this alone make effort or motivation it was simply a nationalistic one on their part that they of course that have had been largely drawn into wahhabi islam again with the influence of outside that now what exactly might have motivated these two brothers and again i am not ready in any way to say that they are guilty of anything terrorist attacks the effect simply haven't been established but to the extent that that even a possibility. with who they were more motivated by what would be considered

radical islam has occurred or their own chechen ethnicity is something that's going to have to be determined if it was their church in a new city then you could not see orientation seen the united states as a primary or as hard as it is said to determine any of the facts are really coming out about this there are so many things that are still murky what ties they even had to the region in the first place john guy had a president a president of the archangel group thank you for weighing in now i want to stop for a moment and take a look at the role that social media has played in the events that have unfolded in the past few days it was social media sites like twitter that we first heard about the boston marathon bombings those were the same sites where tons of video and pictures of the aftermath began streaming in in the moments after the bombing happened and were later picked up by the news media since that day social media has

continued to play a crucial role in disseminating the information about these events r.t. correspondent margaret howl tells us more. we're now in raveling details about the two brothers tamlyn and joe hart the only suspects in monday's boston marathon bombing that killed three people and endured more than one hundred others the older brother tamerlan twenty six years old was killed yesterday after a firefight with law enforcement nineteen year old your heart is still at large and considered armed and dangerous just how the social media sites like facebook and twitter clue ascend to who these suspects are well the set eyes had a heavy social media presence the younger brother dzhokhar in particular now on you tube twitter and the russian equivalent of facebook bio connect the two of posted photos of themselves and uploaded videos and posted status updates to harness that i was tweeting as recently as april sixteenth commenting on then suspects of the boston explosions and one he tweeted i'm

a stress free kind of guy and the day before and they what god hates dead people or victims of tragedies oh well those people are cooked. temple and close to drunk videos of himself jovially impersonating accents now temora said in one photo essay about boxing i don't have a single american friend and i don't understand them now that is a radical radical profits did appear on their youtube page meanwhile many facebook posts from the younger brother joe hart it seemed more typical of a nineteen year old kid for instance a list of the most important thing in his life as career and money his facebook noted he attended cambridge latin preparatory school a pretty just magnet school in boston with famous alumni like ben affleck and matt damon now he had nine friends listed this morning and last one making his social connections eight in total no girlfriend to speak of and he does list his date of birth and that he isn't married and he didn't like

a quote from the koran which stated and do good indeed all loves the doers of good will. the social media accounts of tomorrow and your heart provide some insight into both brothers and trust there's little indication from looking through them that they plan to commit this act of violence in washington margaret helal r t well for more on the role that social media has played in the manhunt for these two individuals i was joined earlier by our two web producer and you're blake and i asked him how social media is changing the way the police conduct investigations. well you know there's a couple dozen ways to look at not even as much as the way the police conduct investigations but the way the world conduct investigations when the press conference was launched by the f.b.i. thursday afternoon around five o'clock actually twenty twenty six hours ago twenty five hours ago when this happened within literally seconds everyone who had any sort of an inkling to help in any way whatsoever who also had any sort of internet

connection they all went online and they were all trying to put together the pieces of this puzzle that's why i mean only five hours later we pretty much knew who these people were the suspects that we had their names we had multiple images and this just because everyone can share information so quickly that you don't have to rely on all these different agencies you have to rely on the a.t.f. and f.b.i. or even the boston police department and obviously they're doing a huge part but it's not that they're outsourcing your investigation just anyone who's interested in helping whatsoever will help especially when it's something that is this powerful something something like terrorism. you know so this was you know absolutely instant but because of that because it was so widespread and because it moved so quickly and there was not a lot of the information that came out so quickly was was so small and so specific that a lot of people could really work with too much information we don't have that much time left but let me ask you about exactly what you're talking about in this case was social media more harmful or hurtful i mean obviously the spreading information but at the same time it was giving away police tactics and location and people were

saying it was only please check locations we haven't actually seen that proven yet the law enforcement said you know let's let's make sure that people aren't aren't ruining everything but let's let's see you know encourage them to actually go ahead and do stuff because so many people are involved in kind of muddle things to begin with people were going ahead in jumping the gun and single this person did it maybe this person did it in fact just today the moderator for reddit actually had to apologize because so many people on that web site actually said ok we found the guy whose name is and i'm going to screw this up to poppy and he was a missing student who just. appeared from brown university two months ago he kind of looks like the suspect here must be him and this family this poor boy has been missing for two months his entire family was just devastated because the top a missing of some for two months now here they have half of the internet going up knocking on their virtual front doors saying hi your son still missing he killed everyone totally wrong you know this was totally wrong but people were engaged to to act and do something and it was

a bit muddled because it was just too extreme too quickly obviously social media was wrong lucian i think the way that we do investigations that police do investigations that we get the word out and you're blake i'll r.t. weaponless or what with that report now a lot of what happened last night played out on or near the mit campus in boston just to repeat what happened last night gunshots were heard on the mit campus late around ten twenty pm at ten thirty but officer sean collier was found dead in his police cruiser these events were followed by a carjacking and a police chase during which one of the suspects was killed for more on the scene from last night and how the mit community is responding i was joined earlier by greg stein brecker he's a staff reporter for the mit attack and i asked him what in mighty students woke up to this morning. well most sure i can really see that they woke up to i know most of the students that i've talked to were up very late or are still but as for those

of the few of them that kind of went to bed early enough that they missed the start of this. i can't even imagine we went to sleep last night on the normal campus and woke up with head of one of the campus police officers one of our own dead and the city turned into i don't know almost feels like a war zone lockdown go explosions going off long rifles it's so greg city to what is the current situation on your campus is it in lockdown right now. no it's not formally in lockdown i think the phrase they're using is sheltering in place which is basically please stay where you are and don't go outside please don't get hurt. and that's in effect over a number of different towns around here so are cities you've got cambridge watertown boston brookline and i think belmont all being asked you that it's

shelter in place as they had to make their way across the city looking for this guy and greg do you have any indication as to why these two gentlemen were in that area those these two suspects let's go to the million dollar question no we have no idea we'd love to know it specially if they were at mit deliberately we're kind of between you know residential urban cambridge and urban boston so it's entirely possible they were just passing through this seven eleven that they robbed as you know rather urban area and up the street from us and you have to it's sure his power from very over to boston goes right through our campus so this officer may have just run into him by accident wrong place wrong time and john everything kind of went downhill from there greg stein brecker saff reporter for the mit attack thank you so much for reporting that food well we want to turn now to west texas where state police officers are saying twelve bodies have been recovered after a deadly explosion at the west fertilizer company those same officials say that

sixty people are still missing and over two hundred have been injured as a result of the blast fifty homes were also destroyed for the latest coming out of texas arctic correspondent ramon bellina reports. flags are half staff here outside of the west fire department inside the scene is described as extremely sad as it's believed that some of the members of this fire department were the first victims of the deadly fertilizer plant explosion here in this tiny town of west texas today authorities have confirmed that a dozen people were killed in the blast more than two hundred people are injured and the search and rescue mission continues for first responders meantime a criminal investigation is being spearheaded by the a.t.f. the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms they just walked into this fire department a few minutes ago meanwhile the residents of central texas are trying to start over some businesses have reopened however many residents here still very anxious still

very sad not knowing the whereabouts of their loved ones did you know any of the people that responded with initially all of them all of them just hadn't been able to hear about any of them let me. know the extent damage of the house it was just the windows were blown in and where i was at in the room my kids. saw i don't we don't know the extent of the damage just the house lifted up and. i grabbed my kids and we're headed out the door of the hallway in the room and son explosion in the windows blew in and everything we fell to the floor and we waited until it stopped we got up and i got my other daughter and my mom that was in the living room with my stepdad and we ran outside the house to smell like gas it's just it's just sad you see everybody's vehicle i mean either blowed up or their house gone i mean it's i mean it's just tragic and we were on here i mean there's still no thank

days later neighbors are still recalling the frightening moments of the explosion many of them are still unable to return to their homes meantime we're getting new reports that there may have been. some serious safety violations at the fertilizer plant which exploded in recent years something that the a.t.f. and federal investigators will likely be looking into as they continue to figure out what it is that exactly happened now in our couple of days that we've been here we've seen relief efforts come from all around the country but neighbors that we spoke to know that the recovery effort will be a long term one. in west texas in the party that does it for now i'm maggie lopez say right back here at eight pm.
