it is four pm in moscow you're watching r t with me marina joshie welcome to the program britain's confirmed it's holding up to ninety afghan nationals at its camp bastion base of ghana stand without charge it's thought some have spanned more than a year and detention lawyers say the u.k.'s actions are unlawful drawing a parallel with america's notorious guantanamo bay sarah first has a story. we heard a fairly robust defense for the defense secretary philip hammond this morning when he confirmed that around eighty or ninety afghan detainees are being held in camp bastian now he said that it was observed to suggest the britons running a secret detention facility this comes on the back of u.k. lawyers who are acting on behalf of some of these detainees speaking out they've launched a legal action saying that some of these men have been held for up to fourteen
8:02 am
months of that and that this amounts to a little detention now the rules dictate that british forces are only allowed to hold detainees the ninety six hours unless there are exceptional circumstances the last november we saw the defense secretary. change the rules that a hold the transfer of detainees captured by british treats to afghan security forces after there were concerns that they would be abused or tortured a british troops that are looking for a safe path wait for transfer of these detainees the safety of british troops also comes into this these men who are being held some of the motorists some of them have links to involvement with i e d's so i think really making the point here that these are dangerous individuals if you present a direct threat as cheaper to streets if you listen to what the lawyers have come out and say they've used that word secret facility and they've actually said that
8:03 am
it's reminiscent of the public's awakening that there was a ground based the u.k. lawyers have been very clear here that parliamentarians did not know about this that this was not known to the british public so you've got the defense secretary on the one side saying you know this is very different to guantanamo bay in a number of very important respects predominantly that this is the detainees protection and also that this wasn't a secret that people have known about and this has been spoken about and you've got the u.k. lawyer saying you know hang on a second absolutely not this was a secret facility and this is the public awakening. i will tell you later how the past masters of secret attention have been tracked so that you can see what they've been doing. anyone with internet access can see when where and how the cia is rendition victims have been transferred all correspond lifts the lid very shortly here on r.t. . more countries are joining the chorus of warnings against

lifting the e.u. arms embargo on syria which expires on friday after some european officials voiced their concerns canada's foreign minister said giving weapons to the rebel forces will only lead to more death and destruction that you want human rights chief has ak who would the statement but britain and france maintain they'll have the right to start arming the syrian opposition and washington's backing them russia though says that any such moves would be in violation of international law and that lifting of the e.u. bargo could derail next month's syria peace conference in geneva more details from r.t. is very important. the united states is showing no concern over the expiration of the e.u. arms embargo on syria which is set to lapse in the coming days the deputy spokesperson for the state department patrick than travel says that washington welcomes this step because it would give greater flexibility of specific e.u. member states to support the opposition as they see fit now of course that greater

flexibility means that countries like britain and france will be able to ship arms and ammunition to to the opposition groups in syria which would then use possibly in an effort to overthrow the government and even went on to say that easing the e.u. arms embargo sends a message to syrian president bashar al assad that support for the opposition will only increase but the u.s. meanwhile is sending its own double standard let's remember that washington has been fiercely critical of russia's transfer of anti-aircraft aircraft missiles to the assad government now while moscow's maintained that it has been fulfilling defense weapons contracts that were signed long ago with syria washington believes that it's wrong for for moscow to fulfill any contracts because civil war is taking place there and whatever contracts russia is fulfilling could be used to inflame the conflict taking place there but yet now the u.s.

is welcoming possible flow of arms to the syrian rebels with this e.u. arms embargo on. now it's also worth noting that just a few weeks ago u.s. secretary of state john kerry was in moscow he traveled there and pledge that the u.s. will work closely with russia to end the bloodshed in syria kerry and foreign minister sergei lavrov and sergey lavrov underscored their commitment to the communique signed in june last year which calls for a transitional government to be established in syria that includes both sides but how can the international community get to the point if european union members with the support of the us are now considering to actually flood syria with even more arms experts believe that our being the syrian rebels will ignite an arms race in that country and so far according to the un the conflict there has claimed the lives of more than eighty thousand people and if more weapons flow into the country

to arm the syrian rebels. crisis because it would of course be exacerbated even further. meanwhile the syrian opposition has split along a fresh fault line leading rebel factions inside the conflict zone have slammed the exiled umbrella group called the syrian national coalition for failing to represent the revolution and c s n c itself meeting in turkey has still not decided whether it will go to geneva next month or two contributor afshin rattansi says the rebels have no incentive to talk peace. six days of talks in istanbul among the opposition groups seem to be failing disastrously as if you were in a room with the witches and george sabra general salim idriss seem interested already said the disappointed is noble far enough the you should be shipping off their weapons right now forget about the friday deadline general salim idriss very disappointed that we don't have any patience any more people are old defecting to

the brigades that obama put on the terrorist list. basically they're in disarray already back that they were going to not they said they didn't want to come to the level kerry arranged talks even before we get to them and all go so are they interested in any kind of peace are they interested in carving out bits of syria in ways that their proxy leaders saudi arabia and more interested in is now becoming a fight between those. it's a very complicated situation that they waded into and of course has been said many times the blowback will be appalling. there has been one movement in lebanon has reportedly sent more reinforcements across the border into syria to fight alongside government forces there the rebels the armed opposition has threatened to retaliate against hezbollah unless the intervention stops he while in lebanon itself clashes

good and frankly there are no the government is for example is the government loaded on there's a really good over the going on that he's talking about there one of the parties is going to the money they are going to really concentrate they're not and they're rolling out and they're calling the shots in parliament of course to the government and i think that the point is that the also suppose that the secretary and his owner didn't start that way but it's being but it's being increased by all sides. transferring terror suspects to secret prisons was supposed to be a strictly c.i. only affair not anymore now you just need to hit the internet log on to solve the dark puzzle of its global rendition network thanks to two british universities i search ask explains. written dition revealed from now on you can learn exactly how the cia has been secretly transferring its war on terror detainees across the globe on civic and military aircraft something better known as the rendition program

researchers from britain scan university and kingston university have compiled an extensive flights database by going to their indiction project dot gov dot u.k. you can see a detailed graph of more than eleven thousand cia flights performed from two thousand and one to two thousand and six not all of them have been confirmed to have had detainees on board some of those which are marked in blue are described as dummy flights there are also flights which were labeled as highly suspicious meaning there is no substantial evidence that they were transporting suspected terrorists in certain cases there were website designers have ample proof of detainees travel the full route is described on the map like this one of the suspected al qaeda competent diver who has been locked up in guantanamo for a decade without any charges we can see on the map how he was transported from thailand where he spent eight months in detention after being called to the united arab emirates and then to poland almost a year later he was shifted to guantanamo in that year he spent at the cia black sites in poland by the claims he was water boarded eighty three times but how

exactly do the masterminds of this project gather the information and what goals they're trying to pursue we'll find out with one of the masterminds of the project mistruth blakeley from the camp university in england many thanks truth for joining us here on my first question would be how exactly you are gathering information on these flights and where did you find to manage all the data. ok most of the information that we have was already in the public domain but was quite fundamental so we've worked closely with a number of human rights organizations and human rights investigators to bring all of that information so it comes from freedom of information requests and some of it comes from investigative investigations into particular cases including the need to proceed in this on behalf of some of that is how. we rely very heavily on the work of the u.k. legal action charis and would prefer which is represented some of the men who are still held in guantanamo bay without charge or trial. what is the point of all this project what are you trying to achieve and what message are you trying to send out

. main aim was to try and match the global rendition system to try and provide as comprehensive a picture as possible of higher and higher edition took place which countries were involved and how the cia managed to hide individuals in the system as it transported them around the world to hold them in prisons where they could be tortured and interrogated our purpose therefore is to shed as much light as possible on the system with a view to assisting human rights investigators and human rights lawyers to defend the rights of those people who are victims. thank you so much mr blakeley this was a likely from kent university now that that's a breeze currently holds more than eleven thousand flights information about them and the masterminds of the website are asking anyone who has any valuable information on these flights to contribute. and so how does our here in r.t. frankenstein food meets shady security of the american giant behind g.m.

finance ministers from the largest nation say that if no action is taken now tyree generation fall by the wayside while seventy five point seven point five million people under the age of twenty five are out of work across the blog the figures are particularly alarming in southern europe where u.s. unemployment in greece and spain is now over fifty percent the president france where more than a quarter of youngsters are jobless has warned out the situation is becoming dangerous from seoul on spoke of anger and hatred brewing among young people while their governments fail to improve their prospects economies dr stephen davis told us that the situation is a ticking time bomb it's actually a minor miracle that this hasn't led to more serious social and political unrest that it has already one of the things that history tells us is that lots of all employed young man is a very very dangerous situation that's the kind of thing that historically could

flare polyploid. and a back to our top story now britain is confirming it's holding up to ninety afghan nationals without charge at its camp vast base in afghanistan all going to talk to a lawyer for one of the detainees rosa curling thank you so much for joining us rosa well first off tell us a bit more about your client and specifically how did he and were he is now. so my client is a young man these approximately about twenty years old he is married with one daughter he's afghan and that's not going to we have been instructed by his brother and by his uncle because he was captured and chained by the brits in august last year two thousand and twelve and today he is still being detained by them so nine months on. during that time we were instructed in march
8:22 am
of this year his uncle and brother asked us to find out why he was being detained and to try to get access to him so we can provide him with legal advice so we start city and now anything at all about the conditions he is been kept in. so so far we have still not been able to gain access to our client since march this year we have been writing to the government asking for access to our client because that's obviously an absolutely fundamental right to people who are being detained if they have access to a lawyer so there they can challenge the detention that they are that they have we have been trying to get access to our clients since march and we still haven't been able to speak to him we were sent to the government we've asked them to make sure we can speak to him and so far they've refused because of their refusal we have to apply to the u.k. courts here and ask the court to order the u.k.
8:23 am
government to give us access to the courts but i just didn't order last week which said that the government have to provide us with a reply within fourteen days and if they were going to refusing continue to refuse us access to our lawyer so access to our client then that hearing an urgent hearing would have to be held next month in the u.k. courts to determine what lawful the u.k. government to continue to refuse access yellow rose that we have a situation here. well we have an afghan national who's been kept in this was silly for several months now but. how legal is it i mean what does the law say about holding an afghan national and his own country by foreign army without any trial. we've made in all of you what we've missed by phone call and clothes further if that we can see no lawful basis on which this our client is being detained by the u.k. government and the u.k. authorities not against him and that's why we have made an application to the
8:24 am
courts the hague be a school close up look nation asking him to for him to be brought to court and to be released and be explaining what basis the u.k. government is stating that they can continue to detain him he has had no charges given against him as far as we're aware and as i said we've had no access to the tools so on the advice that we've given to our clients it's clear we can see no legal basis on which this man is continuing to be detained well at this point rosa what else can you disclose about your plans to get him released. so we have pushed into the courts to applications one is an order from the court we are asking the court to order the u.k. government to give us access to him the second case is we've put in a hay vs application once we've had access to our client we then want to continue with the application for his release we have asked the courts to consider whether
8:25 am
there is any legal basis on which the u.k. government is holding our guidance we can see no evil the basis on which they're doing that that's why we've now asked the court to get involved or those roles occurring a lawyer for one of the detainees at camp bastion base in afghanistan. watching r t now more world news for you and the man suspected of stabbing a french soldier last week may have acted on his religious beliefs that's from prosecutors who spoke shortly after police arrested a suspect in a paris suburb who was identified through fingerprints surveillance footage shows a man reciting a muslim prayer just minutes before attacking the assault is thought to have been inspired by the murder of a british soldier in london a few days earlier by man shouting islamist slogans. hundreds of buddhist men have stormed a muslim area in northern myanmar hurling rocks and buildings and brandishing iron
