on screen online international news and comment live from moscow this is twenty four hours a day nationwide protests in turkey a raging for a fourth day as demonstrators clashed with police in several cities protesters are demanding concessions from what they call the authoritarian regime of the prime minister and his party. is in istanbul with the latest. people are just as determined to go back out on the streets whether they work whether they go to school whether they're any other way busy with their lives know they're still out here in huge numbers especially considering the fact that we now have a first officially confirmed death that is related to protests we have to mention the fact that yes that is on sunday. when the protests were underway a group slammed into a car has slammed into the group of protesters as a result of one man has died and this is the first officially confirmed death there
1:02 pm
have been reports of at least two other deaths which have happened because of police brutality this is a separate entirely separate subject of course considering the fact that police have been you can see with the way they have been dispersing protests that is they use water cannons tear gas rubber bullets plastic bullets pepper spray basically all the arsenal that they have it's going all against the protesters which are now of course the protests are now spreading all over turkey the major ones that. and of course in the. happening all over the place but of course the epicenter all the entire action remains. where people are out there at this point the prime minister erdogan is out of the country right now but he did earlier the protesters alcoholics. basically polluting the city and said
1:03 pm
that they are undermining the principles of democracy by going out on the streets in rather peaceful protest most of them are peaceful protests that is despite that has already gone into pressure from several of human rights groups and several countries which were saying that the crackdown on protesters in such a brutal way is really not acceptable. well we talked earlier to turkish opposition m.p. a could a dog who's been out demonstrating in istanbul and he says that security forces are responsible for turning peaceful rallies into nation why protest which could eventually lead to a civil war. and the far. right. contrary. anything. and. using

brutality as an executive use of force what is your position of has the details and you may find some of the images in his report the stabbing. water cannons dear gas and rubber bullets what started as an environmental protest provoked a full scale shore force from the police footage shows disoriented protesters slammed into the pavement by a powerful water cannons and often the water's yellow because police are deliberately mixing in spray people are down on the ground trying to return to their senses here a young woman appears to be having a seizure and the police in action aid the people. racist against all this violence. they never just act while. they don't use anywhere else but the police attacked severely using excessive force i wouldn't call it excessive force it's
1:06 pm
a monster torture actually similar footage is coming from around forty cities and towns across turkey there are claims the police are diluted pumping tear gas into residential homes these are among the most violent protests turkey has seen in decades each day more people are wondering whether the government remembers turkey is a democratic republic. and the water cannon because i was in the wrong. we thought that we're going to die we did nothing to deserve this protests this is not only for tax and gives a fuck it's the whole policy of government under pressure. for. for about ten years but according to prime minister erdogan the government is the one being oppressed he slammed the broadest as anti democratic and illegitimate accusing those on the street of being extremists organized by outside forces but
1:07 pm
protests on this scale take on a legitimacy of their own and human rights organizations are already severely criticizing the government's actions you would be r t. observers say the unrest has been brewing for a long time as the government's actions have been seen by many turks as an oppression of democracy it is like an eruption of of all can on concerning the policies of the prime minister have done in the recent years in the recent months that he has been mostly involving in the private affairs of the citizens and his way of speaking he's very of doing things. also consider to leave the democratic. combative use of the contrary but i think this is the first time in the last eleven years that the turkish government has experienced such a strong public your reaction the protest of only one to remind the
1:08 pm
government in democracy the politicians can do things taking the people against them turkey is a democratic society and verdon is trying to get turkey into much more islamist structure based on the state. experience and this is a strong reaction i think the badness of democracy and islam is understanding clashing now it will be not civil war but it will make the lives of two prime minister very difficult in coming weeks and days. and early in my colleague. about the financial ramifications of the turkish on rest from business present to. the markets the investors the alice and all the happy about it and they were welcomed back at that desk this morning with the downfall of six percent on the main stock index of cars bonds a consensus that tech is that they've actually spat. by the most it's two thousand
1:09 pm
and nine which is very significant indeed so really the debt is a can more tech toxic these protests are awful and obviously the reaction of the markets seems to be quite logical but when we talk about and when we see the protests in the euro when the standard they are very sort of economically release it because yeah because of austerity their accounts there let's go look at turkish economy it looks certainly yeah it looks good compared to its mayor greece and cyprus your insight only in comparison is free struggled deal has actually been posting on average five percent growth since about two thousand and one as i can tell you since two thousand and one growth of that she quadrupled here we go you can see it yourself it's evident to see so we've got this strong growth going on just here particularly high in two thousand and four they've managed to keep that right here this is the financial crisis which affected most of the globe they did plummet four point eight percent just now but what is impressive is the resilience
1:10 pm
just here that they demonstrated just fighting back with nine point two percent a right here we're looking at stable gross of the economy is performing well and we can say that it was relatively unscathed by the financial crisis which as you say is in stark contrast to what is happening in europe as to why the process of going over. still ahead in the program reaching a milestone as often as you cross that billion views mall we look at some of the videos that you like the best that'll be right after this break stay with us.

anytime anywhere. he's continues here in the trunk of the american whistleblower bradley manning who had classified military data to wiki leaks is now under way in the private faces a list of charges among them aiding the enemy which could land him in prison for the rest of his life. as more. it was a video that shocked the world footage of a u.s. apache helicopter killing twelve iraqi civilians including two journalists collateral murder the cold blooded brutality of the occupation captured on film it was leaked by a young american soldier army private bradley manning the video was uploaded to wiki leaks but it would prove to be just the tip of the iceberg the former army intelligence analyst leaked more than seven hundred thousand documents containing
1:13 pm
classified information to that whistle blowing web site they included reports of torture abuse higher than acknowledge civilian casualties in short an unvarnished view of america's wars now known as the afghanistan and iraq war logs in may arrest seeking approval for his actions manning began a dialogue with a hacker named adrian lebo chat logs that turned over to the government leading to manning's arrest and subsequent confinement now what came next was what proved to be one of the longest military pretrial detentions of a u.s. soldier since the vietnam war bradley manning was held in maximum security solitary confinement in a cell his attorney says was no bigger than six by eight feet and as the number of charges grew against manning to twenty two he was allowed to plead guilty to ten lesser charges this in exchange for a maximum sentence of sixteen years now by december two thousand and twelve when he took the stand to testify about the conditions that he endured he had been in
1:14 pm
confinement for more than one thousand days now the freedom of the press foundation broke court perscribe rules it released bradley manning's explanation of his action in his own words to the public today june third bradley manning's court martial will pursue the remaining more serious charges including aiding the enemy judging by what manning has already said that or a prisoner of a maximum security facility and a hostage to your conscience of course the question of whether the young man will spend the rest of his life in prison will be answered at this trial. we leak spokesman kristinn hrafnsson told me earlier that the clampdown on the freedom of speech in the us will not stop people from blowing the whistle on the government's wrongdoings but this is a part of a strategy tendency that says it's to conceive the phone records that were taken for twenty general should the associated press be faux gross it
1:15 pm
appears well. let's not forget that under obama the more whistleblowers have been persecuted under all other presidents of the second world war combined it will not stop. there will always be great people. who filled with the right ideas and. sometimes they need to break the rules to get information out to the people because the people have the right to know. let's not get more reaction from michael prisoner he's an iraq war veteran and co-founder of march forward now that's an organization of active duty members and veterans of the u.s. military so as i said you're an iraq war veteran hasn't bradley manning in directly put you and fellow soldiers in danger by exposing secret information.
1:16 pm
absolutely not the only people that put me and my friends in danger was members of the bush administration who lied to us about why we had to go to iraq lied to us about why we had to fight in iraq lied to us about why we had to stay in iraq for ten years causing a life of about five thousand american service members and of course hundreds of thousands more maimed and did crippled and psychologically traumatized for the rest of their lives there are people who put american lives at great risk those people are those politicians who are now on million dollar book tours when they know that they have lied about the things that they sent us to war for a while people like bradley manning who did not lie but simply told the truth about what was happening is now facing life in prison and intending the truth to be a the enemy that. well they're going to try to say that he ate at the enemy i'm not sure it is a heavy charge and saying that bradley manning gave this information with the intention of getting into the hands of people who are trying to harm u.s.
1:17 pm
forces and that information will be used to carry out attacks on u.s. forces bradley manning has said why he released this document bradley manning is someone like me like many thousands of other young servicemembers who went into the military very idealistic very trusting of this government but weaving in what we are doing is was right only to witness the horrors of war the complete fallacy of why we were there the lies we're told by this government and decided to stand up and say something about it and bradley manning's voice has been much much louder because of the platform he was able to get with wiki leaks but he's one of thousands who went through that same transition and bradley manning in his own words has said this is an act of conscience that the american people don't know what's going on that we're sending soldiers to die that millions of lives are being squandered billions of dollars are being squandered in a war that people have no idea what's going on so he's aim is to stop debate about military policy and also foreign policy but at the great sacrifice is it really worth it. i would say that bradley manning knows that he made the right decision he
1:18 pm
doesn't have to live with that that thing that so many soldiers have lived with is that guilt and shame and feeling wrong about what we were part of many hundreds and thousands of us actually stood up and said something but it is very telling that this government wanted this war to be shrouded in secrecy and as soon as someone shed some light on what's really happening when soldiers start speaking out they do whatever they can to silence the voice of those soldiers that's why bradley manning has been torture in jail for three years or i'm going to try to ruin his life over something that was a great service to the people of the united states and the world so would you have done the same thing as manning if you had the chance. well i didn't do anything heroic while i was on active duty like bradley manning did if i could turn back the hands of time i would have used my position in the military to do just that a bradley manning is one of many dozens of soldiers in the active duty military today who are using their positions in the military to organize against the war and to organize other soldiers into refusing to go to afghanistan i mean so he's part
1:19 pm
of a movement of ji eyes that is not very large but that exists opposed to the war and people doing what they can to try to stop it from within well this trial comes just weeks after the u.s. government clamping down on press freedoms by own accounts will this affect manning's feints what do you think of that. it will in fact a trial it includes some unprecedented acts of secrecy by the u.s. government where an entire hearing better going to be taking place in this trial are going to be closed off to the public closed off to the press and in fact the people who are testifying the witnesses transcript will never be able to see that we're going to be wearing disguises fake mustaches and wigs inside these these hearings that are going to take place in the trial and so just as the war is shrouded in secrecy because they want to protect more crimes from getting out now that those were crimes are out they want the trial to be in secret they don't want people to know they don't want the press to know because the government knows that they are in the wrong like a prisoner thank you very much indeed iraq war veteran joining us live thank you
1:20 pm
thoughts well manning has admitted to being one of we could leak sources but pleaded not guilty to volleys in the espionage act will by protesters staged in support of him people saying the u.s. government is clamping down on the freedom of speech using the twenty five year old to set a threatening example to other potential whistleblowers well he's made a point has more on this. the military court martial against private first class bradley manning begins at a complicated time for the obama administration u.s. journalists have been spied on an unprecedented number of whistleblowers have been imprisoned and access to the truth many say grows increasingly harder by the day we have a severe problem with transparency and secrecy in this country that's for sure our problem is a cult of secrecy extreme levels of dystopian secrecy washington classified ninety two million documents in the year two thousand and eleven that's the last count we
1:21 pm
have to put things in perspective what bradley manning leaked is less than one percent of that the former army intelligence analyst has admitted to leaking hundreds of thousands of top secret military and diplomatic documents to the whistle blowing website wiki leaks in february manning pleaded guilty to ten of the twenty two charges he faces the twenty five year old said he wanted the public to know how the u.s. military campaigns in iraq and afghanistan had little regard for human life it should be clear to anybody paying attention to bradley manning. thought of himself at the times a whistleblower that he did what he did because he thought he was making the world a better place and that contrary to the way he's been represented by some people he in fact it really did from a place of sort of patriotism he's in no way anti-american and has never expressed anti-american sentiments in any way in fact he's always said that he is and was driven by the sort of sense of patriotism and and hope that the united states could
1:22 pm
be the this you know sort of great country that he would do to be prosecutors however are pursuing a court martial on the remaining charges including the espionage act and aiding the enemy which carries a life sentence in prison in an interview with democracy now julia songe addressed washington's allegations that manning aided the enemy by going to wiki leaks if that president is allowed to be erected it will be interesting for a slightly. it means it's a potential death penalty for any person who really treats pretty. sensitive but secondly it also. the journalist and the publication shereen of communication they would say to the enemy and therefore making him susceptible as well to be espionage act which also has little if any sort
1:23 pm
of good as it was the. u.s. that latter part is part of the u.s. attack. including myself broadly we hope this letter finds you healthy and strong daniel ellsberg known as the original whistleblower leaked seven thousand government documents to the press in one thousand nine hundred seventy one revealing the truth about the vietnam war more than a war decades later he says the u.s. government is going to even greater lengths to keep the public in the dark call it a war on truth telling truth telling specifically. truth with the government doesn't want. truth about government crimes or that the public needs to know. if military prosecutors successfully prove that whistle blowing is aiding the enemy then bradley manning could spend the rest of his life in prison a verdict handed down under

in less than half an hour from now in the meantime the sport highlights of the past week with partridge after the break. new york magistrate judge gary brown has ruled that it's ok to track people's location via their cell phone the judge supports his decision by saying that there is no legitimate expectation of privacy in the perspective of a cellular telephone where the individual has failed to protect his privacy but taking the simple expedient of powering it off this statement seems to hint that cell phones are some sort of fun luxury and that people are just too lazy to turn off their phones when they want privacy this ignores the fact that there are many people who have to be on call twenty four seven like surgeons and server
1:28 pm
technicians these people can't just turn off their phones so does that mean that certain professions can't have privacy also this presumption that people have no expectation of privacy what about people who send images of text messages of a sexual nature to each other joy i think that all these people just assume it's all public goods i don't think so the fourth amendment says that people have the right to be secure in their persons houses papers and effects and i'm pretty sure that's cover cell phones too but that's just my opinion.
