a stark reminder to the rest of us of a dangerous and counterproductive the supposedly clean energy really is to join me if you're ready to break that set. anti-government demonstrations in turkey have now spread to at least seventy cities across the country and as protesters continue to flood the streets prime minister erdogan has recently announced that he will not show any more tolerance for the protests having referred demonstrators once as terrorists even going as far as having social media organizers arrested for planning them so they gain some insight into the latest developments on the ground in istanbul i was joined earlier by our two correspondent arena. i first asked her what it was like on the ground give us a sense of what's going on and here's what she had to say. as far as the protesters are going to and really looking at several hundred out on six seem and in the park

itself there are several thousand there are some estimates which stay around five thousand people they were camped out in ten say it was for obviously it's really hard to you know count them make a head count but there is thousands of them literally as far as the police are concerned i would say there's i would say i would say we're also looking at maybe fifteen hundred people as far as the police force and they're a lot of them are out in the square but also there are there are multitudes of them all around the neighborhood when i was coming in to sara lee or today i saw i saw as many i saw more of them than i saw of protesters so we're talking about some serious numbers in human terms here and the footage i've seen looks pretty intense some have been in the demonstrations this week turned violent so far what tactics are police using i mean on social media there seems to be photos and video of dozens of people with severe head injuries yet official reports say that four people have only died do you know that's accurate. well there is no way to verify that at the moment the source to go to would be the turkish doctors association they're more or less they're independent i would say

when it comes to counting counting injuries and as well as deaths in this situation in turkey there haven't been any deaths of this why there haven't been any more deaths reported at this point but you have to understand that protesters at least in square there they come prepared they have mad. they have helmets they're wearing comfortable clothes they're prepared for actually running and resisting and they actually some of them even have. you know protection bicycle protection anything that can that can help them to keep themselves as safe as possible in the situation maybe that is that largely the reason why there haven't been more deaths but of course this isn't over yet i mean it will hopefully there will be no more of casualties deadly casualties but who knows we are talking about very caves where it showed the protesters have been building for the last several days there's a lot of them and they look really dangerous i mean there is sharp and sticking out of every where if a person falls and lands on that obviously that is going to be at least a very severe injury to a one's body one can only guess what can happen afterwards so it's a kind of

a dangerous situation but they do come prepared obviously and what are some of the grievances that people who you've talked to have. well it's a little basically boils down to the fact that people are unhappy with their go on and his government the increasing islamisation of the country as a lot of people see as the seeming disregard of the government towards women and as well as for example sexual minorities i mean obviously tons of people out in the park or course saying that why is he telling women to have at least three kids and why is he saying that there are no people in this country who are gay i mean they are saying we are gay why why is he telling us that is not true why why sealing us we don't exist totally disagree with his policy with his foreign policy for example on syria they also believe that there is no freedom of expression in the country. of the turkey has the largest number of journalists which are in jail in the world

unfortunately. there is the continuous stifling of various media outlets you may have heard about the. turkish t.v. channels being fined for broadcasting the protests so these are the main points that people disagree with the main points of their disapproval of their. one and this is why they want him gone as a matter of fact they're saying that he's pushing the country back instead of pulling it forward and of course we can't forget the famous meaning of the c.n.n. turk plane the penguin documentary instead of airing those protests interesting to know that they got fined for actually. can you confirm the dozens of arrests for people simply using social media and why do you think the prime minister is so threatened by twitter. it's probably because he's threatened by it because he hasn't he cannot control it i mean there is no way to just close shut off or shut down the internet in the in the country that is not going to happen and people have been that is where they were going for news this is

how they get organized this is how they interact and this is how they know what's happening in other parts of the country because turkey obviously is very large and protests are not happening just in istanbul. if you see anything green right now that's actually the protesters playing with a laser pen all over the city all over the square at the moment as far as whether or not people actually have been arrested yes i believe the government has acknowledged in fact that they have made some arrests. of people who they believe have been inciting others to protest through twitter but again it's a very it's the situation there hasn't been any there we don't know any details but we are looking we're looking at a country where even though you're so get arrested for going out to protests so really it's all it's all it all boils down to independent sources again to the media sources as well as some independent local media outlets as well and we have about a minute left but the prime minister is tone has gone from very abrasive to softer to abrasive again i mean how likely is it for people who talk to think that the

government would make any concessions here. if you are if you ask me personally just what i've been watching it doesn't look like everyone is going to make any concessions i don't even think he has been soft in any at any point altogether. made a statement through a through a couple of insults the protesters dismissed them looters and alcoholics and then one who went on a four day trip abroad that really isn't being soft and when i once he came back he basically said that he is going to start dealing with the protesters and he is dealing with them and the people that we've spoken to political experts as well as journalists there saying that this is what everyone is all about he is he's making these awesome statements and he is very unpredictable he's only predictable in that he is going he's bound to make to do something that is going to unsettle a lot of people he really has no regard for other people's opinions even eve that person in question is the president of the country it's interesting to see how the

president of the country abdullah doing as well as the prime minister to what have been making almost conflicting statements throughout these protests they really haven't been on the same page so really at this point it does look like everyone does whatever he wants and says whatever he wants to say right and i think i'm just getting the talking points from the corporate media here so it's hard to tell what his tone really is i know that is that he wanted to be with the gezi park protesters today he seems to be dealing with them in his own way and lastly on how the protesters been more organized over the days do they have any demands thus far . well they've actually have boiled their demand demands down from a lot of changes and down to the government has to go down to basically one request that they've had at the end of last week and that request was to keep the gezi park intact just leave it where it is don't touch it maybe plant a few more trees there the mayor first said ok but then the prime minister came

really losing. a little. or she or anything like. as the fight against genetically modified foods grows more and more evidence is emerging that confirms how g.m.o. crops have a negative effect on the animals that consume them for example take the most recent study published by the journal of organic systems in which a team of australian researchers studied the extent of which g.m.o. crops were affecting the health of pigs that took one hundred sixty eight newly weaned pigs in a commercial us piggery and if i did them in half eighty four pigs were put on a diet that incorporated genetically modified soya and corn while the other eighty four pigs ate a non genetically modified diet other than what they were eating the pigs were brought up and identical conditions roughly five months later the pigs were slaughtered and autopsied by veterinarians who mind you had no knowledge of the

pigs prior food intake all the autopsies yield a very disturbing result the pigs who had eaten the g.m.o. crops had a much higher rate of severe stomach information so for those of you don't know stomach information can be a serious digestive issue often causing symptoms such as abdominal pain abnormal digestion and malabsorption of nutrients now activists are saying this is just one more example why it's so important to know about the food we eat and it's a concern that as of late is resonating with more people both in the u.s. and around the world so talk about the newest developments on the g.m.o. front and whether this could be turning to be a turning point for real change i'm joined now by jeffrey smith executive director of the institute for responsible for technology and author of seeds of deception exposing industry and government lies about the safety of the genetically engineered foods you're eating thanks so much for coming on. happy to be here so we

now know that g.m.o. crops are causing stomach inflammation in pigs so when you extrapolate that to the human population when there has been an alarming rise of digestive disease in americans over the last two decades do you see a connection here i can see a connection for years in fact i interviewed a veterinarian and a doctor yesterday both of whom were talking about got problems stomach problems in pets in humans the day before i had half a dozen moms talking about when they took their kids off of genetically engineered food the kids got better not only got problems but behavior problems and we know that the gut is also linked to behavior also immune system also reproductive disorders there are thousands of doctors prescribing nonzero diets and they're describing how their patients are getting better what we see now in the news from this recent research is also what we're seeing on farms in case studies around the world where less deaths by all cers less deaths by other digestive disorders

reduction an antibiotic another medicine use increased fertility and litter size these are some of the very concrete changes that occur when they farm or a veterinarian takes livestock off of gio's and as i said we're seeing the same thing on the rise in the u.s. population since g m o's are introduced and getting better in the individuals that remove most from their diet and of course as we know independent tests are not required for these foods to go in the marketplace they're just conducted by the companies that make them jeffrey last week american wheat farmers filed a lawsuit against monsanto about wheat that was found growing yet was never approved for commercial use a very interesting case what precedent does this lawsuit sat well this is just the latest examine example of how we have a completely uncontrollable permanent self propagating pollution of the gene pool. you see when you release a genetically modified crop doors the pollen doesn't read the signs so the

genetically engineered wheat which was planted in a field trial never approved for human consumption leaped over the field and ended up pollinating none genetically modified wheat or the seeds moved or someone made a mistake the last field trial in oregon with this genetically engineered wheat was two thousand and one and now we're seeing that this week somehow survived had contaminated the gene pool propagated season after season and is in the wheat grown for food now we saw that with rice we saw that with unapproved corn in fact there's more than one hundred varieties of genetically engineered crops that have been field trial in the united states and according to the u.s.d.a. inspector general the u.s.d.a. does not set up the precautions to prevent this type of contamination which not only puts at risk the food supply but also those who grow none genetically engineered wheat because as you know japan and south korea shut its doors to us we

do exports because of this finding which i think calls into question just the ridiculousness of monsanto going over and actually suing farmers for having g.m.o. crops i mean it when it's cross-pollination you can't really contain it jeffrey and you know speaking of lawsuits we just won an unprecedented piece of legislation passed in connecticut and just today maine passed a similar bill it will not take effect unless four other states will now three pass a labeling law really is this a cause of celebrate or does this just signify the power that monsanto has where states can even implement laws that their own constituents overwhelmingly support you know i think we can celebrate in fact it's not just the passing of the labeling bills it's also the march against month santo on the twenty fifth of may with over two million people in fifty two countries it's also the recent new york times article of all places that really announced. a tipping point in the food industry

it described very well self organized consumer rejection of g m o's hundreds of companies becoming non g.m.o. project verified companies actually scrambling to get supplies some having to go overseas and farmers getting paid more per bushel for non g.m.o. so in corn so i call this a new stage in the tipping point of consumer rejection where the food industry executives look around and realize the g.m.o. concerns are not going away they're excel orating and they'd better move quickly to secure non g.m.o. supplies or there may not be enough now the next stage is coming very soon that's when some mainstream food companies who've already enrolled their products in the project announce it once that happens the next stage we call the battle for market share as soon as the mainstream companies that did not become see that they're losing sales then they'll realize the game is over for g m o's and the same

companies that had already removed g m o's in europe because of consumer concern will remove it in the united states so this can happen this year i think you're right i think months and is becoming more of a household name of course on may twenty fifth tens of thousands of people thirty six different countries in the world participated in the march against monsanto really hope you're right about the tide turning on that once we can catch up with the rest of the world finally you know as we know the month santa protection act was passed as kind of a sneaky provision in a bigger agricultural bill that gave monsanto essentially a munity jeffrey i know there have been some people trying to repeal it do you know the status of the act and if it has a chance to be repealed. well this was attached to a appropriations bill so it automatically extinguishes in about six months there was an attempt to repeal it that attempt failed to be clear what happens is when they approve genetically engineered crops they often do so illegally without a filing the proper environmental impact statements so organizations like the center for food safety will sue the u.s.d.a.

the courts will side with the center for food safety and tell the u.s.d.a. i'm sorry this was not approved legally you must pull the crop back until you've done it properly and legally the non santo protection act tells the u.s.d.a. ignore the courts no matter what they say you're obliged to allow farmers to plant this illegally approved genetically modified crops so it's really a way to challenge the very basis of the constitution by allowing the u.s.d.a. the executive branch to ignore the legal branch the whole court system so many people think it's unconstitutional but it's an example of why we need to win this battle in the marketplace and why we can't go beyond bomb administration and ask for a barrel out because they've been marching in lockstep with monsanto as had the bush administration the clinton administration etc so on the federal level with all the money that monsanto spends with their own former attorney being in charge of f.d.a. policy on g m o's then becoming one santos chief lobbyist now at the u.s.
