larry king now meet laura ingram the queen of conservative talk radio if you're going to play of bidding war for various constituency groups the democrats will always be able to outbid you sounds all of the reasons why the scandals and the concern is if you if you ask too many questions if you dig too deeply if you're a whistleblower then look out people to say it's like it is like nixon and her stance on immigration it can't be that anyone who manages to sneak across the border is suddenly an american i don't believe that all next on larry king now all . my guests today laura ingram an old friend the most listened to woman and poll the girl top radio host of laura ingle show and laura podcast she's also
9:01 pm
a new york times bestselling author of five books. to be here in washington with her let's get right to it right when i was just had some controversy what do you make. the a.p. phone records but i think at the beginning people thought well the administration has to really clamp down on this you know classified information leaking out and maybe it was good because it would be involve a terrorist attack or you don't want any any journalist publishing anything ahead of time the promise is it turned out that the a.p. actually ceded to the government's wishes and didn't publicize anything before they were supposed to only afterward they say a terror attack was forwarded. it looks like now the administration was angry even about that and the view is that this is kind of retribution against the people whom both parties want the government to do this one big complaining in the past that they didn't do this well let's be clear i am trying to be fair here but larry i
9:02 pm
think what a lot of people from bob ward word to to al hunt to you know not known as the raging conservatives are saying a way to say this this is going way too broad to to look at all the records of the associated press not just one person but a very wide swath of records it's too much and now it looks like that fox news. journalist of fox news and others at fox news also have not just business lines monitored but personal communications monitored including one reporter's parents so the concern is if you if you ask too many questions if you dig too deeply if you're a whistleblower then look out so in the. well that you know and some like a bob woodward to say this people to say it's like it is like nixon and jay carney . to ensure that the emergence of broad national security and not leaked because the consequences can be severe i think it is absolutely
9:03 pm
right about that i agree with jay carney and i was defending well i think so but again the a.p. narrative doesn't really match up to what he's saying because the a.p. did not publish classified information they actually work for the government and i was most journalists do i think when when asked not to breach security so i think jay carney's point is well taken the problem is the administration itself has had some problems on this larry with with releasing operational details after bin laden was killed they came out that next day and rushed out to tell what happened in the compound room time oh gosh larry hold on that me why. why. do you think. obama's doing this human or do you think they're doing it well i don't think we know i don't think we know i mean it's really the most it seems reason to write it's not well i don't know i mean i think to jump to the conclusion that they have al touristic reasons when it involves journalists that are digging a.p.
9:04 pm
was just reporting but someone like a james rosen at fox news digging sharyl attkisson at c.b.s. digging on fast and furious she thinks her computers might have been compromised i think we just need to know and i think the public needs to know i think we need a vigorous press on the left right and center and i do believe investigation you know and i mean maybe there's nothing nefarious about this at all ok what do you make of the target you don't know yet i don't think so nor do i have not been audited but i should have said that because now them probably will be audit this when they get this this larry is really frightening because we have individuals who are starting these small groups and these are like little groups to teach the constitution little groups to teach high school kids about founding principles and most of the people are more conservative right the scrutiny had not been given to more liberal groups and asked really probing questions about well who are
9:05 pm
the students that you're teaching we want their names. we want their names what you know what is that all about so it was seventy seventy thousand requests yes the exam status come on how do you pick and choose from dollars to get all seventy but all know about it why don't we why don't we investigate it seems from all the examination of this so far only conservative you do you blame obama for that but i think if he does he there doesn't know anything that's going on as an administration as the chief executive officer of the government or he knows something about it or he's giving tacit approval to it and said i don't i want to be kept in the dark but. you know all these people are paying they're going to be a pain in the midterm elections and i don't know but all i'm saying is let the process go forward i think making these grand pronouncements that it's you know that he should be impeached. i think that's that's ridiculous why do you think he was really in his prime. i think is a night i think you people think is
9:06 pm
a nice guy i mean i think he has a beautiful family i think he seems like a great of. those running at once and to stay i think people still want to think the best of their president and i think i think people want to believe and i think he's he's the first african-american president i think it's so heartbreaking for people to think that he would somehow approve of all this or set the groundwork or set the table for this there's no you this fifty eight percent of americans polled say he's still a strong leader. same level. was killed so it's now i mean i think the c.n.n. poll was interesting it said he had fifty three percent approval rating it doesn't really surprise me the thing that i think is. more interesting is that most people think the country's going in the wrong direction that we have serious problems that washington's not really addressed to get elected i think got elected because we didn't really have a real candidate on the other side who would engage him on foundational issues and i think mitt romney again a very nice person i think is a great guy i like him personally a lot. there was not
9:07 pm
a fight there mailbomb it was fighting on every level had a huge support in the media he was he had hollywood behind him all your pals there in hollywood i love obama so he looks like i want to be with the fun guy less we obama you said he is in washington yet he talks about washington thoughts about you know those of the incompetent managers yes yes and yes he the president will give speeches and say washington dysfunctional washington is not getting the job of the republican president bush that reagan so because remember obama is now in a second term and president obama was elected in part i think because people thought he could bring people together. and that was really part of the change poster is going to be a new tone and really until recently even democrats were grousing that the president really wasn't engaging on capitol hill that he really wasn't he doesn't want to burrow into the details he is that's not who he is and so for him to now say well washington's broken well well he's been here for the last four or five
9:08 pm
years and if president bush admin saying that i'd say the same thing about him frankly i mean he's part of the answer or not so that's that's what i was trying to get laura ingram to flee the smart on the gore was a bold stance on immigration we should really have a handle on who's here and why. i believe that i think the country is in a rich by immigrants i think we always have been my family is from poland austria and my mom's side of the family and there's room for a little immigrant exactly so i'm all about three immigrants living in my home i have three children who are from other countries so i'm on the russian one were to russia that's like a joke to russians i'm going to mali. so. i believe in immigration as a really important to our country and i always will but what's happened since one thousand nine hundred six after reagan's amnesty has been basically uncontrolled borders that have resulted in american wages in part stagnating or actually
9:09 pm
dropping in some sectors and so what i believe is that to really make the country strong the border has to mean something otherwise just forget the border i mean don't waste all this time talking about the border the border has to mean something and being in america has to mean something and it can't be that anyone who manages to sneak across the border is suddenly an american i don't believe that i think it's an insult to people who went through the legal process to get here who are amazing people and i think it's also it's bad for assimilation purposes and we know it's bad for the economy so my view is that we should have a revamped immigration system that streamlines the process for people who really want to buy into. values buy into the system contribute not be a burden to the system and people who believe in in the ethic of america i think that's important but i do think illegal immigration is a huge problem and i'm vehemently against this so-called comprehensive immigration bill. rubio congress opposing his or with absolutely i've read the whole bill and
9:10 pm
so. there's a lot of the over the the thing there accor was bipartisan and that was wrong well there are a lot of things that are bipartisan and. there's a couple of thing all the a lot of things but every every amendment i think with the exception of two to toughen enforcement and to remove the discretion that people like janet politan at department of homeland security would have all of that was basically rejected the bill as it moves through the senate is basically the same bill that the gang of eight came up with eight hundred sixty something pages so the bill basically gives you too much wiggle room to bureaucrats to dismiss admissibility requirements enforcement measures basically if someone wants to come into the country of jenna politan all thinks well it's it's a hardship for them not to be here she's going to do that and i think that's wrong and i think that's
9:11 pm
a big part of the problem with this bill i also think ultimately the bill will give preference to foreign workers in certain sectors of the economy and that's one of the amendments that orrin hatch the excess fully pushed through in the late late hours of the war they do he's for the bill and he all these high tech people and company put a lot of pressure through lobbyists in washington and they got their language and they basically don't have to give american workers any type of advantage over foreign workers or anything should rubio's. i think he's probably going to have one . you know politician there are you know he probably is and i think i i was the first one to put marco. on national radio i supported him when he was twenty one points behind charlie crist and part of the reason i believe why marco rubio is in the senate and i like him very much i think he thinks we have to quote do something and i think links yeah i think we do and we have to enforce our laws i absolutely
9:12 pm
think we have to do something but i don't think it's this bill i think that's a glib way of dealing with a really complicated issue of state politics republicans are not. removed from. the latino populations who are president smart politically well that may be a calculation i think it's the wrong calculation because if you're going to play a bidding war for various constituency groups the democrats will always be able to outbid you i mean let's say hillary clinton is the nominee for the democrats and twenty fifteen larry and maybe rubio is the nominee for the republicans hillary is going to say to a latino audience this man wants you to wait till twenty twenty two or whatever it is thirteen years from now twenty twenty five to become citizens he wants you to wait you're here working i will make it my priority to make you citizens tomorrow when i'm president of the united states what is rubio going to say that. well i do get more votes than romney well so what romney could have won
9:13 pm
a historical level support from latinos he still would have lost the election because romney didn't energize his base i'm going to rubio is definitely demoralize the base of the republican party by supporting this but i think you're right that's his calculation if i look at. your party's. you know i think they said that about reagan too and i think they said that the country changed country moved on conservatism was fifty nine hundred fifty s. and it's old hat i understand that argument i just think it doesn't matter to me because i haven't i haven't had a logical point of view i have a set of ideas that i believe are right and i believe are best for human freedom i believe the best for women and men and knew him. blacks and whites and so the fact that people say well the country is changing well it just means that conservatives have to do a much better job of selling their ideas and their people and their views to really changing oh i don't believe foundational views should change i believe that you have to find people who are really smart and committed to them and not will and
9:14 pm
will not compromise them away at every turn when you changed over the years but i didn't like you before and i like you now so i guess i've changed some of my shit was a question you know did oh well. we may not come back now when. it's all bipartisan larry. all of the women in the boy. talking about the same story doesn't make it news no softball no puff piece is tough question. is it possible to navigate the economy with all the details of his dick and for me and media hype will keep you up to date by decoding the mainstream state it's in
9:15 pm
your right. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize that everything you. are welcome is a big. here
9:16 pm
is mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that the americans call . a dollar. i'm sorry i mean the guy who cares about. you sorry. you know what that is my tears. no one wishes to featurism. the first. security but it's the. you know the super committee distracts us from what you and i should care about because they're a profit driven industry that sells a sensationalistic garbage he calls it breaking news i'm happy martin and we're going to break that.
9:17 pm
we're back with laura ingram i'm not sure about other women inside the beltway you know when you're a star the women there are all the women and so i don't know i don't i don't know. i like her a lot she's an old friend and she she i have a kind of a different approach on something about it but i like that i know i like and i was great on your show she's been on she was on larry king on c.n.n. many times you know hillary clinton she is a formidable force and look out twenty sixteen look out for. the prepared republicans meghan mccain. yes you should run with her didn't know it was like it was a nothing thing i think she's funny mentions kind of a liberal republican so that's a big world you know many of them. but i think there are a lot of people think liberal republicanism. when and when it starts winning i'll be impressed. it's really classy always always always liked her always had an enormous amount of respect for her and just a classy class individual nancy pelosi. well i'm not going to my nancy pelosi impersonator but there was someone on saturday night live is that i did the best
9:18 pm
one ever but to do that and the next ok you refused to do it. well larry i did. i nancy pelosi. i like i like the fact that she's married to paul pelosi i like him he's a great guy he's whole areas i like. you just as she sleeps with a gavel though i will say that she has a huge gavel and that's what yeah when paul traveling so it's well why don't we all the ally the security but whatever turns. hillary and been garson she put it the way. she said put it away when she. did over it it's what does it mean why does it matter larry why does it matter that's what she said she screamed. that that will continue to be a problem we have for americans that it's not clear who it was that night is now out of the republicans can't run on that but i think it's a it's a sense of competence fairness what was going on that night chris christie. i think
9:19 pm
so i think especially with what's happening with the stuff on capitol hill with the party being splintered chris christie a lot of people might think he's not washington and that's good do they still blame him for the discourse he made obama with it was kind of annoying or you got to admit right all of the residents i'm still hoping would i do just fine but it's kind of going overboard i mean i thought i was going to jump into obama with a laugh that would have been a bomb that obama might not have made it to the polls don rumsfeld talking the other day he did agree with the. don't know jew you know i don't i don't think i pronounced on that i didn't go i don't want to see you on i don't have a view on. every issue i mean i'm not running for office so i don't have a view on every single issue it's really not my focus on my show and i happen to have a good sense i hate to hate thing that hasn't had a lot of close friends who are gay and we talk about this and it's funny a lot of people say. i'm sure i'm described as a lot of things that are inaccurate but it was your thing to say it was completely
9:20 pm
unfair but this is what happens is people say you're this or that to try to demean your point of view and that is just as hateful and that is just as negative and that is just a stereotyping. and then they allege that other people are about them when you try to tell people who are good people who maybe they're christian people maybe the muslims in this is their heartfelt belief not because they hate people because this is what their faith teaches them then to lecture them and to try to sort of make them feel like they're less human because they believe what they believe i think that's really toxic to democratic society i'm a roman catholic and i believe that you know marriage is between a man and a woman that having been said i think people should be able to get benefits respected and everyone should be treated with dignity and when i was i was not i was in college and i was editor of a conservative student newspaper and. you know i was eighteen nineteen twenty twenty one and there is a lot of high jinks going on at dartmouth college but we're making
9:21 pm
a point back then about you know whether sexuality shouldn't be part of the discussion i mean i don't really care what people do in their private lives i just i think people should be respected but it's not it's not what i believe if i believe it's really a relationship but then i'm not an expert i talk about this and i'm not married so i don't feel like i can you know really pronounce on this as many others can but i do believe that people should be respected and i think that people should be able to have protections and health care and visitations and whether you call it a civil union or marriage i don't i don't think that really going to the only group . for children to adopt to the. we get to. read. a story in a school discussion says sure and for the doctors you should see the. difference you or your children are adopted yes i'm single and i decided to adopt children you
9:22 pm
know i think i was called to do it people asked me that i think was there some a perfectly i don't know i just sound. like the holy spirit i don't die it just came to me like i have a lot of means i'm very fortunate very blessed and i always was i felt good with kids and i thought i could offer something to the children who were abandoned then i went through a long process i tried to message adoption didn't work out and then i had spent a lot of time in russia as a student and spoke the russian language and also in central america has been a lot of time in el salvador and guatemala in russia just i work through the system and it's awesome awesome. and want to write so. well there are some of the reporters who are sort of jumped when they saw me and barking commands in russian and they didn't jump on you know some of them are cute that they're so real that. after a show when you marry if you met mr right course you hope totally hope you know i
9:23 pm
know you for breast cancer i just got through the eight year mark so. far of your really am i just had my appointment couple weeks ago so i think so you know everything. is great. but she's amazing and i think she inspired a lot of people to just get checkups which is you know i'm always lecturing my listeners to make sure you get you know your regular checkups and take care of your health so i'm sort of media questions that you have been stored want to know if you do go over the or rather to give them a chance. i will not answer that question i love i love hosting for bill and when he's out it's really fun but. retiring going to be like someone saying i'm going to take over larry king's i i mean. you know plenty of cool but no no no no no no. no i mean i'm not saying i want to do it but he's not retiring or feel like saying what i want to be governor i'm not. waiting for this show to a game called if you only knew what
9:24 pm
a first person you kissed yes it was isn't it peter holding fourteen you can you afford to be i mean i'm one that you know meaning for you know just get on with i want to assist i feel i've got you know many gynecology of one reason but you know in the. pathway. of the. wildly successful software executive in massachusetts yes and we still talk is that good from. public. office. that's the obama i guess of. it's kind of that's so obvious about two thousand and sixteen dream ticket. and there is no one right now has a dream do you not really. i don't yeah i do i just want to see how it plays out i
9:25 pm
mean i think if i say something it'll be. there's no american. none of the currently and none of the current crop i mean we have a lot of i want to see how a lot of these people deal with immigration arming the syrian rebels which were apparently going to do. i want to see how people decide you know actually deal with those issues and i'm going to wait and see if people i like larry i like i like ted cruz i like rand paul i like him a lot and i think chris christie will be interesting to watch cruz is a little bit. over the top but everyone's a little bit tough when you push him on the air with it is that what it does is a little ever i'm a little over the top so i made a dream ticket i mean. this is now i know. your favorite all time books. favorite all time book. i just read it so i'm going to say this because it's and i went back and read the godfather because i'm a poor example of the almighty god it is so it is one and two are my favorite movies but the book it still blows away the movie so i'm going to say that now
9:26 pm
because at the top my last but i love most of the book. moves for now it is perfect but the book is racist like great gatsby i mean people running the great gatsby and it's kind of like a carnival but the book is so much better was the thing that pisses you off the most. people who want to shut down debate demean people with with names and not continue the conversation to be use to parker's hate and we're all hypocrites no it is it still is yeah it's terrible but we're all flawed i mean i'm the i always say this to my radio audience don't look for me to be a role model i'm the last flawed person out there i mean patient you have a role model. role model to yeah i do a dear friend of mine who believe in a very different from myself she is a mother of ten children. and she makes life every day for her family she looks she's she's smart she has great common sense seems becky simple
9:27 pm
known and she is one of my role models she isn't i call or ask her advice about parenting about life and she's and she's inspiring on every level lawyers or something no one knows about you. i think that i'm a total music junkie i learned that to the music junkie but when i retire they are going to do with sinatra and sarah vaughn oscar peterson are you in a dome so i'm kind of a more of a classic you know old style jazz and. standards and i'm like i'm a music person i'm going to do that and it's great to see a letter of thanks so much and thank you on the back actually thanks to my reading of your d.h. to us for this we have so the first thing about showing up. near shows that i hope those legal thanks to my ideas laura ingram you can download our podcast to our website laura ingram dot com and remember find me on twitter at kings things c.n.n. style.
