you guys probably recognize this guy right here bill maher her he's been a stand up comedian for decades but he's also most famous for his late night news career now host of h.b.o.'s real time but starting first as host of a.b.c.'s politically incorrect a show in which he was controversial and unapologetic and his views and fact less than one week after nine eleven in a climate of pure fear and hysteria he said this week when the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from two thousand miles away that somehow we did not do that is a stab in the airplane when it hits the building say what you want about it not you howard of course this was a truth that a.b.c. just couldn't handle and they decided to fire him because of it oh but he's made up for it ten fold since then by kissing up to the establishment and his corporate masters in fact he's put a one eighty you see now he loves drones he says they're cheaper they kill less people even said why it's a bad why is it a bad thing that it's like playing

a video game bill loves drones so much in fact he's even joked about killing protesters with them at a recent foreign policy speech obama was interrupted multiple times by medea benjamin co-founder of code pink and bill maher took to twitter right away saying if you shut up lady he's answering your question maybe rule one word drone strike man so funny to joke about killing dissenters with hellfire missiles on but it's not just drones that he's selling now it's islamophobia check it out. there are violent because they threaten us they are threatening they bring that desert stuff to our world i said the same thing for the night you know we don't threaten each other we sue each other that's the sign of civilized people when you hear you know that the offer free and from american muslims in the vast majority of american muslims you know or this kind of stuff you know with they will say look islam is a religion of peace do you buy that you know. they blow you up there's a p.c.

are becoming cheaper and more available and in most cases free and open but there is a strong push from the establishment to keep these technologies and this knowledge from being available to every member what about what i hope review friend have a gun i mean there should be no regulation on things like that i mean it's becoming obvious that the world will is going to become a place where anybody can have anything so what i think we should be doing instead of thinking of. monetary solutions or legislation to prevent people from doing x. or y. we should be promoting a different value system where open source where collaboration where empathy where good values are actually are rewarded in society because you can't prevent somebody from printing a gun it's technically impossible but what you can do is you can work in the substrate of society by promoting good values so that people don't want to print

a gun and kill somebody because where i come from in italy it would make sense. to do that because it will be a bore and repent and get people be repulsed by it just by the idea and the notion of doing that sure you have to work at a very deep level and one way is to promote resilience sustainability collaboration sharing of information of law on edge and federico the world is a very different place right now i agree that that's an amazing and beautiful vision to look toward but right now societies dependent on waste driven things and pretty much destructive things for humanity i mean we're we're having all the smartest people working on death and destruction how why are we doing this i mean why is humanity so focused on these things when the technologies that you're talking about are available we had cars that could run on water decades ago so what is going on here. to properly answer the question would require more than

a couple of minutes but you know it's a it's a barge of a giant system of feedback loops and it's very you know they're all entangled it's very hard to exactly pinpoint the reasons but what i think you could sum up with is you get what you were awarded the so we we wanted more productivity because we thought that material wealth allowed us to accrue more things and it gave us a good standard of living which it did and it was very efficient that's why the capitalist system won over basically every other societal system on the planet but now we're seeing the shortcomings of the system so what i think we should be doing is what do we do next and in the book that i wrote this one which by the way is also available for free because i think we should be leading by example so you can read for free on the website. we should be promoting the things that take away the power from the corporations and governments that crew power so if you

design things to last and you make the designs open source. then you can provide the poor the things you need because you can make them yourself with very little money or even no money because just imagine the energy that you need to run the three d. printer it can be it could be coming from a solar energy which you which is i mean both the affordable take and the supercapacitor or the storage in a few years you can through the bring them ok and then some of those a's and all of these so you print them you make them to last so that you don't need to keep constantly when you replenishing in buying new stuff because. you make it yourself so why would you do something that breaks in two years ok that is just because sure but once again you're talking about the next step here right now we're seeing government seize on the surveillance technology privacy is basically a limited it's becoming a profit making industry and the surveillance states profiting off the government

i mean. you know kind of what is all of those these rich and powerful only make up one percent of the world's population as a model they have the use of propaganda over one thousand nine percent of the world's population women will be able to anybody i'm going to consume the slaves. to buy these. what makes this film different though is that it shot through a north korean perspective of the west giving the viewer a truly unique vantage point over the information being presented so joining me now to discuss his film further and the role of propaganda in society today i'm joined by the filmmaker himself go martino thank you so much for coming on and it's such a pleasure so why did you choose to make this film as a new zealander what we were thinking but i think it's the same for people anywhere and i'm sure most of your viewers would understand it was in two thousand and three

and i just started getting. i found myself being more and more critical of everything i was saying and and reading and hearing and i wanted to get to the bottom of sort of uniting resupply behind all the lies and so i started researching propaganda and i thought i have to make a film. to deconstruct propaganda or you know if everyone could find out what we knew you know then you could start creating a sort of antidote to all the laws and the film's release as if it were a product of the north korean government why do you choose to present it not way well first thing you have to do in making a film is think how will i find an audience and if i just get a straightforward drive film about propaganda i'm not sure anyone would watch so i thought. i have to do something to really get people's attention so i thought how about an intercepted propaganda film and north korea was the obvious choice and i love the film so much because it speaks at such obvious truths but you put it in

such a way that's just so interesting we presented one of them is that the cult of celebrity i mean you show people who are receiving an award consumer items i want to play that really quickly for our audience. thanks to western propaganda. the world still believes their invasion of one nine hundred fifty s. was needed to find communism. when they have no idea that it. was a trying to unify korea daily just you tourists upon property every. day remain ignorant of why we feel towards this injustice. was the result of this manufactured. one. a bombing campaign to destroy seventy five percent of our country's history.

i don't know which of the you can. test. drugs. and other agents on us and chinese brothers and sisters is really disturbing footage and of course we'll get to the cult of celebrity later that was a clip actually showing just the havoc that was a wreaked on korea and the entire peninsula during the war i think it's one of the most misunderstood war is really from the american perspective what do you think are some other big misconceptions about korea from the west. about north korea i think stem from the complete lack of information and a lot ahead that has to do with north korea itself or minutes just a closed book no one really knows what goes on inside the north korean leadership and and of course that creates the perfect environment for really one side of propaganda so we get is just wisdom propaganda not leaders telling us that there are three pacing the same old line for everyone. and without the balance of north korea are saying here's where we stand here's our history here's what we're about.

you know what are we left with to think that the leadership i'm not saying that's not entirely true to some degree but you know north koreans are human beings as well and. you know career sees itself as one korea and it's only a recent split you know so. i think that you know again they called the korean war the forgotten war there's just this complete vacuum of information about north korea other than you know just a tired old you know one sided thing that charted out over and over again and of course part of the axis of evil of course the provocations with these military exercises that were seen over and over again i mean really hyped up who was provoking whom kind of kind of thing have you talked to any koreans since making this film in north korea. and north korea but the actor who played. the professor in the film is korean and his mother is north korean and you know the

reaction from the south korean government was well they accuse me of being a north korean agent for making the film and he's been accused of being a north korean spy. which is about the worst thing for a south korean because it's reputations intentions. but of course the thing about talking to north koreans you're really not allowed to you know if you go on tours they're very closely supervised you speak to who you're allowed to speak to. and of course if you talk to north korean defectors how can you be sure you know exactly what's being said there's just this complete lack of information about north korea and north korean people and what they really really think. and talk about the threats that you've received because you just mentioned that you know this guy was accused of being a spy but you've actually gone through a pretty hellish couple of years since making this into something really really strange i mean i had really careful talks with everyone involved in the film where

there were only eight of us but you know i think really carefully about you know the risks. seem kind of grandiose and paranoid to think about you know what could happen from making this film if there would be an international incident and we spoke about these things really clearly but the first thing that happened was i was bored in for questioning by the counterterrorism unit and that was before the film ever came out because i brought in films from kuala lumpur from the muslim enclave i got who are now starting to click footage and they stopped me at customs for a long time and i think i went into the system and then they were watching. and so i was questioned by the and then of course the south korean government started investigating us and the korean society in new zealand accused us of being communist sympathizers and the korean agents and. i've tried going but i had gone to the maybe or current affairs programs in new zealand to. telling the truth but

of course it's almost like the boy who cried wolf you know each time i say something now paper like. a really good memory really you know made i'm not really sure about it was why is i did it come out because i know that originally when this was released you did have this kind of statement with it saying you know this was released by the government and then you were anonymous you know we were the whole idea was to in order to make a point about propaganda and make propaganda. wrapped up in a propaganda campaign if you like propaganda squared if you will and. you know at some point i knew i'd have to come out and say ok we made this. i didn't expect it to happen the way that you said even the catholic church. of the catholic church banned. from from communion and his entire community people had been his friends and he was held in very high regard in the korean community and our city just didn't talk to him and he had to remove himself from

the you know the boards he was sitting on and people refused to send their children to the school where his wife taught because you know it's amazing the. taking really and it really is and we had a meeting with the korean society because i tried to clear it up as filmmakers you know i'm responsible for what happens if you don't like what say you know take issue with me and we had a meeting with all the members of the korean society and it's like cathy era communist witch hunt and they literally were accusing us out of being agents and. that was it would have been observed it wasn't for the real repercussions and i think it really shows you that the witch hunt hasn't really ended it's kind of morphed into something else there's a little are trying to knock down these last remaining communist right in the world and trying to you know combat it and tell the truth you just kind of make it worse people. tend to get very comfortable with their beliefs and it's very hard to counter them and and it's just so ironic that you know the. propaganda campaign

going on against us. and the counter propaganda came campaign for mayor which is sort of ongoing and we don't have time to put that called a celebrity clip but it really just shows people just hysterical receiving consumer items and oprah and and you're saying you know did this man receive an award when something is getting hailed by news agencies and it's really just about the first i phone on the market why do you think the celebrity such a crux of the moral deterioration of western society well i mean it's because it represents what everyone started to aspire to you know people are spire to you know in this age of you know capitalism and consumerism having more and more and more and with that comes the representation of what's the heart of this wealth celebrity it's what people want the fame the money that illusion of what's great and now it's afforded to people for the smallest of things in social media. now i think you know for all its benefits it's kind of dangerous to who i think now we see the
