breaking news starting with iran r t the u.k. stopping the world's phone calls and internet traffic to secretly collect data and share it with its close ally the u.s. that's the latest revelation from the n.s.a. whistleblower edward snowden. weapons in the wrong hands president putin slams the u.s. for plans to supply arms to the syrian opposition were known terrorist groups of fighting within it. riots rocked brazil more than a million protesters vent their anger at the government and major cities across the country with the second fatality now being reported the government holding a crisis meeting over the worst protests the country seen in twenty years.
2:01 pm
just little after ten pm her moscow very good evening she was kevin i would hear it r.t. tonight and as i mention the breaking news is coming in the last hour or so fresh revelations tonight from n.s.a. whistleblower edward snowden he now claiming britain collects stores and shares data from monitoring global e-mail and social networks with the help of u.s. security agencies let's get the latest on this fast developing story out he's going to church you can our washington correspondents across it another twist and turn in the global surveillance astonishing story and this keeps developing doesn't it. exactly kevin well this is another bombshell from edward snowden british spy agency collects and stores vast quantities of e-mail messages from around the world facebook post internet histories and calls and shares them with the largest u.s. spy agency the n.s.a.
2:02 pm
they titled the two principal components of the program mastering the internet and the other one global telecoms exploitation so the titles sort of give you an idea of the scale and the scope of the program based on snowden's revelations the guardian is writing that both the british spy agency g c h q and the n.s.a. are able to access and process vast amounts of communications between entirely innocent people as well as targeted suspects this includes recordings of phone calls and to the content of e-mail messages entries on facebook and the history of any internet users access to websites so apparently britain's technical capacity to tap into the cables that carry the world's communications is made g c h q an intelligence superpower snowden says he wanted to reveal all of this to to to reveal that because he thinks that it is important for people to understand
2:03 pm
and here i quote him it's not just a u.s. problem the u.k. has a huge dog in this fight he he says the documents reveal that by last year the british intelligence agency was handling six million quote unquote telephone events each day and had tapped more than two hundred fiber optic cables those cables carry a lot of lots of lots of informations all of this was done apparently under secret agreements with commercial companies described in one document as intercept partners the documents suggest that some companies have been paid for the cost of their cooperation now the guardian newspaper is a source with knowledge of into. legends said the companies were obliged to cooperate in this in this operation the source said and i quote here if there is an overarching condition of the licensing of the licensing of the companies that they have to cooperate in this should they decline we can compel them to do to do so
2:04 pm
they have don't choice this is what the guardian newspaper source said so these revelations reveal of course the scale of the cooperation between u.s. and british intelligence services which doesn't come as a surprise we of course knew about the n.s.a.'s interest sept station at menwith hill in north yorkshire in the u.k. where british and u.s. spy agencies work very closely together but from these revelations we learned how data collection has evolved and extended dramatically over the years one internal document quotes the head of the n.s.a. lieutenant general keith alexander under a visit to menwith hill in june two thousand and eight asking and i quote here why can't we collect all the signals all at the same time sounds like a good summer project for men with so contrary to what u.s. officials are saying now these documents. it appears that the content of the communications is also being stored and collected but
2:05 pm
in an attempt to sort of patch up the sky scandal now u.s. officials are stressing that no they're not collecting that kind of the content of our phone calls of our e-mails and messages but rather just information as to who would commit what we communicate with and it's a matter of data more more coming down to a watch and correspondent thanks for that flow throughout the course of the day for more as many more comes through thank you well meantime then you lawmakers want to create legislation blocking the u.s. from accessing the data read citizens with legal who wish to do it first but rolls out the census security professor at the university of cambridge in the u.k. he says the bill could be blocked by washington. the really interesting political tussle is going to be over the european union's debt to protection regulation which is currently going through the parliament america persuaded the european commission
2:06 pm
that they should leave a loophole for intelligent intelligence and law enforcement surveillance of communications. because the convince the european union and it was too arcane an issue that few people cared about and they wouldn't win but now that the issue has become public does the real chance that the european commission will revisit this and will modify the regulations to try and make it stronger but if they do that there is a risk that pro u.s. government such as our governments and the czech republic and so on will then gang up in the european council and will prevent the regulation from being passed so expect a lot of politicking to happen between no undergoes at sauber in november in brussels and a lot more on this story as well as you know him watching us as a chronicled on our website r t v dot com and want to join in the debate please do so on our facebook page as well. president putin is criticized the u.s. for planning to send weapons to the syrian opposition warning that arms are ending
2:07 pm
up in the wrong hands is one of many crucial statements coming out of the annual international economic forum in petersburg at his electorate eskies their fourth. the main sentiment coming from the russian president this time is that they're not the syrian people fighting the regime of bashar al assad but the rebels and the opposition and obviously he's been very critical and very vocal about the recent developments in surrounding the syrian conflict namely the calls across the atlantic to arm the syrian rebels to provide them with military training something discussed by washington over the past several months or so but given what you've said that it's not only plainly wrong to talk about a possible peace conference which would have the members of the opposition and the government at the same table happening at the same time or the talks to arm the syrian rebels is not only wrong but dangerous because that could have very grave consequences for europe as well as the russian president was quick to remind us of one of the latest incidents which happened in the u.k.
2:08 pm
it has no direct relation to syria but he believes it may have serious and grave consequences for the european security in general who are you going to supply weapons to we all remember the terrible tragedy when the u.k. soldier was killed in london that's just terrible it's mostly people like those who murdered him in france you know son that's what concerns us. another fresh concern we've heard from the russian president is that the arms which hypothetically may be supplied to the syrian opposition might eventually be found in europe and even in russia it is an established fact according to the russian president that around six hundred mercenaries from russia and europe are fighting on the side of the syrian opposition and as long as there is no composition to the to the opposition movement in syria it's unclear where the weapons will eventually end up at the same time but even if we can spoke about the recent g eight summit and said that there is no single position among the g eight countries on arming the
2:09 pm
syrian rebels not all countries agree that this measure should be implemented at the same time all countries of the g eight agree that a peace conference in geneva to have both the members of the syrian opposition and the. syrian government talking about a possible peace solution is something that needed urgently despite that we haven't moved anywhere closer to a real date of this isn't either conference but it wasn't only about geopolitics warfare and economics here at st petersburg forum there are also some things to laugh about journalist decided to bring up a scandal of around eight years ago when u.s. billionaire robert kraft accused the russian president of stealing his super bowl ring he back then said that he wanted to show this this ring to the russian president vladimir putin allegedly put it in his pocket and walked away with it said he knew nothing about that incident and in fact his reply caused a full roar of laughter at the press hole. but i don't remember mr kraft or the ring. i do remember some souvenirs were given if it's of such great
2:10 pm
value to mr kraft and is to him i will ask our factories to make a very good and expensive one for him out of the dust mosul and with a good stone thank you. well there are also some big economic announcements to made by president putin as the address the business forum with russia signing off and on and present a deal with china it is kitty pilgrim has got more on the little bit later in the program they will also have the debate on syria as well coming up. but before all that a second fatality case now reported in clashes rattling brazil that suffer an eighteen year old demonstrated died in the state of so part of earlier when a car crashed through a barricade what started as a rally of a transport fares is now snowballed into a one million strong protest engulfing more than one hundred cities across the country president has canceled her trip to japan to hold an emergency meeting of
2:11 pm
the country's key ministers that's following the most recent nights of violence over eight thousand police officers have been deployed to rio head of a football match there when activists attempted to dance on city hall they were met with tear gas and rubber bullets leaving dozens injured crowds gathered in the capital brasilia to receive the same response from authorities now feel. reports now for us next. hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets all over brazil in an unprecedented public protest the hottest fourth of the rest remain sao paolo with tear gas has been fired protesters who tried to take over the local government building in the capital brasilia clashes have erupted when riot police faced off with protesters trying to break through towards the congress in rio de janeiro local police resorted to tear gas to disperse crowds marching towards city hall police say some three hundred thousand people have rallied but organizers claim
2:12 pm
it's twice as many there are reports that around thirty people have been injured earlier around eight thousand security officers have been deployed near the city stadium ahead of time for the ration scottish football match between the spanish and eighty football teams such rallies are believed to be the most violent in a decade the protesters say they're angry at the government's excessive spending for the two thousand and fourteen world cup another point of discontent is the increase of public transport fees in several brazilian cities the country's health authorities later reversed their decision to increase the first but this doesn't seem to have a peace demonstrators they say they are also angry over the underfunded had an education systems the rest come six months ahead of elections in brasil and as we can see there are plenty of complaints to worst president dilma rousseff government the protesters say they will remain until they see change and promise
2:13 pm
a fresh wave of rallies to take place for the next days journalist and blogger to severus a tall with brazilian economies making huge leaps unlike many european countries and therefore the root of the protests isn't about money. i would compare very much the decision in chile a few years ago in chile as we're protesting against the high prices for education that chile has a massive middle class which brazil has just gotten after fifty years of successful achievement of big achievements for brazil a draggy forty million people out of poverty and other things well i would say that this is the first revolt of the middle class of a classic middle class in a certain way in decades and people are wondering if they could get better services and they could get better education better and better health it is not exactly above the economy because brazil is pretty much living through full employment and it's not doing that terribly compared to comparing to european countries i would say the protests in brazil they cook for
2:14 pm
a very long but then when they happen lots of vicious and this is the biggest one in all of time in a long long time so most of the issues brought about now are basically discontent with how government works while our you tube channel to you tube channels really focusing in on some of the images of the brazilian protests we value the head there now if you like to see some of those pictures in the cities right in the grip of the onerous as a lot where the e.u. is heading the wrong direction but more europeans apparently a feeling of called the recent polls and it's fronts the blocs founding member and traditional driving force where disenchantment with the united europe is apparently rising fastest nearly two thirds of french people questioned apparently by this gallup poll this month there are happy with where the e.u. is taking a look sixty percent there they say they're concerned by the rise of germany as a political force and feel that brussels is manhandled europe's financial crisis also an employment to soaring unemployment fueling french euro skepticism it comes
2:15 pm
as president francois learns approval ratings plummeted almost two fold since he took the job last year french far right political leader marine le pen told us france needs an open debate on its relations with the e.u. . but the if would call shock but the first of all you need to understand that the french do not really talk about this both e.u. and the euro a common currency virtually imposed on us i religiously defended here or in other words there is no diversity of opinion on anything you say against the euro it will be equal to blasphemy what i'm asking for is a referendum polls are a good thing but i do remember the polls promised that when asked about the european constitution france would vote for it at the end of the day our fifty five percent of french citizens said no to the constitution that's why we need a wide public debate a referendum to ask the people what they think about all border transparency with
2:16 pm
the shrinking countries and about this currency that killed our economy we need to ask them how come the e.u. guidelines are more important than our own constitution which in shrines the will of a sovereign nation these essential topics have yet to become subject to public debate in france and i'm sure if they were discussed today the french would opt for freedom and well as the french picture britain was surveyed to britain of course one of the most euro skeptic members of the year over half the people the surveyed in this recent gallup poll said the blocs moving in the wrong direction while more than eighty percent said they disapprove of what problems to david cameron is doing all the time when british workers are suffering a president hit pay cuts even greater than those in times of the great depression of the thirties let's talk about this further charlie cambridge national secretary of the u.k. socialist workers party however charlie it's not good reading is there when you factor in inflation salaries since two thousand and one fifteen percent. it's an
2:17 pm
extraordinary looting of workers' wages actually when you look at the figures as you say this is greater than the one nine hundred seventy s. it's greater than the 1980's crisis it's even greater than the great depression of the one nine hundred thirty s. what we're seeing is not simply wages being eroded by inflation but actually karts in the amount of money that people take home each week between six and seven percent on average and nearly a sixth of their wages taken away when you take into account inflation and other elements and that's a huge transfer of wealth to the richest people in society there's a report out which shows that some fifty two billion pounds has been looted from workers between two thousand and eight and today and it's that transfer of wealth which means that ordinary people are being asked to pay their part price of the crisis not the bankers and the bosses who are responsible for it despite the
2:18 pm
difficult situation in britain i guess that help people in the south a europe that look north with them the assizes say hey britain you know you are part of the club be a part of europe you've got to tighten your belt as well to help us guys out here we're all in this together just get on with it no. well i don't see why we should be forced to accept these huge cuts in wages when at the same time the very richest people in society are making not simply the same money but vastly more money we're not talking here about even the one percent as opposed to the ninety nine percent we're talking about the zero point zero zero one percent the richest thousand people in society who at the same time as workers have lost fifty two billion that one thousand people a tiny percentage of society have grabbed an extra one hundred ninety billion pounds that's where the money has been siphoned off and that's true whether it's in britain whether it's in greece whether it's in the spanish state whether it's in
2:19 pm
italy and that's why i'm quite sure that the sorts of turmoil that we've seen in greece in turkey and now in brazil is coming to other parts of europe as well there's one sector of the economy which is certainly booming at the moment and that's the manufacturers of tear gas because across many parts of the world anger is rising over this talk of a done about it it's an age old question and this this kind of thing that the robin hood story has been going on for a long time but as you say it is bad at the mo what you going to do about it what can people do about it. well we need to reset our economic policy in a really fundamental way and that would involve some very obvious measures like taking money away from warfare of talking about new wars in syria or the war in afghanistan or putting money towards the trident nuclear missile system that would save us hundreds of billions of pounds but more than that we need the banks to beyond genuine social control and we need to have some heavy taxation of the rich
2:20 pm
if the richest thousands just lost ten percent of their wealth and they wouldn't notice it to be honest they would raise a sum which is greater than all the welfare cuts in britain put together these are the political choices which our politicians face across europe and across the world and we need these settled in the interests of ordinary people not in the interests of that make or elite or i charlie kimba thanks for your thoughts has been a program that can business such as workers' party. well we doubt smoking over the direction leaves taking the elephant in the room is the upcoming european parliamentary election in less than a year europeans will have to decide on the future of the blocks policy matters interesting report coming up as a tease tester still has been fighting out of fear or even aware of familiar with eve politics even the basics. this is brussels the capital of europe and hold to the european institutions that make laws and decisions that affect the lives of

five hundred million citizens the question is how much do these citizens really know about europe do you know what the european flag stands for. oh i remember. who is the president of the european council european council. is into the. room how many countries in the e.u. . federal grants eleven and who is a twenty eight country. given the fact that not. only does the flag of the stars on the flag mean what do they mean. i don't i know it's i know it's an appalling and has nothing in the middle of it. what do the stars on the flag mean on the european union's flag. those are the member states now here and for the european parliament there's this exhibit which
2:22 pm
showcases some of the key moments in the history of the european union will certainly some of these will be more familiar to citizens of the country where it actually took place when it comes to institutions how they function how they work service and showed that most europeans know very little about what actually goes on that would want to serve it by your barometer it shows that the knowledge of that europeans have one of its missions is just three point four points out of ten this survey also shows that a majority of e.u. citizens think that the e.u. is a good thing however a majority of them also think that their voices do not count fifty four percent in fact now in this report it also says that only twenty five percent of europeans know that there's even an upcoming election in two thousand and fourteen to elect their members of the european parliament right behind me there is no democracy neither in the u.k. nor in germany or in brussels and we need more advance developments for stronger involvement of citizen well there are officials
2:23 pm
a very you see institutions calling for a more democratic europe in order to do so they will need to get people more involved and interested in the first place if they are to achieve this reporting from brussels i'm tests are cilia. so i had few trust the cash the us starts destroying a large gusher costly military hardware in afghanistan with billions in tax payers money and they have all this crap if you go to the one coming up in just a bit. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't run time hard because of the.

authorities in the country now say they're prepared to allow one form of peaceful resistance the silent standing man protests that recently started in taksim square this is police once again tear gas down on demonstrators out in the thick of that. i've just taken off my gas mask for a minute heavy with the smell of tear gas these two police water cannon shots into the center of this stranger non-corrupt dispersing bronwyn have. been examining mind of police response heavy handed police response in the eyes of protesters that protest has been so i'm going about in the past week they say the. prime minister otoh wants government is to authoritarian and the police that are all supporting the government always well and they will do nothing to try and ease back concerns will this affect the politics in turkey upcoming local elections is

very much yet to be seen though anger on the street is very much continuing on a day to day basis to speak to this particular crossroads has become a scene for nightly confrontations between the police and protesters. however earlier in the week protests went on until a small out of the morning without incident yesterday and today. the police response very different with these vehicles charging in and chasing protesters down side streets liberal use of the water kind of just stripped the bomb puppetry and left deborah over the streets. really not the kind of response people were hoping to see from a police force that has really come in for a lot of criticism from a lot of coldness of turkish society in the last two weeks. while the u.s. decides on arming the syrian rebels anti aircraft missiles from gulf states is said

turning in huge junkyards the pentagon now says it's going to destroy us vehicles and other military equipment there despite the war already having cost american taxpayers more than six hundred thirty billion dollars authorized to us david swanson told us this massive disposal of arms in afghanistan is going to raise an eyebrow in washington. that's the you know small coin in terms of the corruption of the u.s. military which is just beyond measure remember while they're destroying seven billion dollars worth of vehicles and so forth the united states congress has just dumped another over eighty billion dollars into the ongoing occupation of afghanistan for the next year virtually the same amount as last year and as we talk about it winding down and ending at rushing to a close we're talking about at least another year and a half which is longer than most wars in world history have taken from beginning to end and this one's been going for over twelve years still terry budget in the bill just passed by congress is increasing from last year and increasing in violation of

a massive deal with china to supply or worth two hundred seventy billion dollars the pill brings got more. the two hundred seventy really in dollar deal has been struck really supposed all expectations here in st petersburg between roughnecks and china and that equates to three hundred thousand barrels a day that's on top of the three hundred thousand that is already delivered to china about three hundred sixteen tons a huge deal and it's a huge deal for a number of reasons we know that the eurozone at the moment is dealing with a sovereign debt crisis the demand has gone down from there and europe has made no secret of the fact that they want to diversify. their demand as to where they get that oil from so this has to play into this as well but as far as china is concerned it is a popular move i've been turning to the business elite here and they say it's all about russia moving from now on and you've only got to look at a map to see that it makes sense for these two countries to be dealing with each other to be striking out these multi billion dollar deals also for rough stuff then

is euro skeptic all parties defend the euro as the common currency of the eurozone despite of the fact that the euro has clearly the defects that it actually. puts southern europe into a severe recession that drives up unemployment rates and youth unemployment rates in southern europe and that it prevents the southern european country from being competitive with central european economies. for all these facts it is necessary to have another party a new party in germany which is actually asking for a gradual dissolution of the euro well you've put forward the problems you see with the euro what's the solution what we propose is that the southern european states and by the mean steppers and greece and italy and spain and portugal that they leave the euro zone within the next four or five years we think of something like
2:45 pm
a gradual exit from the eurozone so we propose that there be a time and with both the euro and a new national currency are used in the countries so that the effects of withdrawal from the euro are as soft as possible for those economies which are already heavily under stress and then after four or five years there is the new task of reshaping what remains of the euro zone and there obviously we have to talk about the no bail out clause i'm fine with living with a smaller eurozone if it is the case that bailouts are strictly forbidden in the new system but this is not the situation currently. and if we stay with the possibility of bailouts then i would propose a return to

a national currencies can you see germany going back to the deutschmark yes in the long run i can see that but would this not have the knock on effect raising the prices of german exports well it would mean that germany is in charge of its currency again that it does not have to pay hundreds of billions of euros in order to. save banks which have granted credit to southern european countries it would mean that german products become more expensive for you in other countries that on the other hand german imports become less expensive so that german for easier to buy intermediate goods from other countries so there are lots of effects which are connected to introducing a new currency but would this not have a knock on effect making german exports far more expensive well we're making the
2:47 pm
the products the outputs more expensive but the way we would like to do this would also be a gradual way so that there is this sort of pressure on the german exchange rate rate like we had already prior to the introduction of the euro and the german economy was always very capital off living with this kind of appreciation pressure it would also as i have emphasized mean that our imports become cheaper which is very important for our economy for our producers that they can buy the intermediate goods at lower prices and most importantly it would mean that. other countries in the euro zone would experience a boom of their own economy because they would be in they would have been. currency which allows them to be competitive again and when income and demand increase in
2:48 pm
these southern european countries then obviously germany would benefit a lot from that you have to bear in mind that germany's exports to the southern european countries have declined by twenty five percent in the last years simply due to the fact that there is this severe recession in the southern european countries well it's clear the euro is a major issue for your party but what else is in the manifesto well there are quite a few other things we put forward like for instance energy prices energy prices are very high currently due to the fact that concert to not only pay for the electricity for instance the the use but there are surcharges on energy prices to pay out subsidies to what people call. environmentally acceptable technologies of producing energy so this makes our energy prices currently very
2:49 pm
high and we think this is an unfair and unbalanced way off subsidizing new technologies we think it would be much better to do that out of total tax revenue rather than out of energy prices so this is for instance one of the issues we mention our program also we are concerned about our pension system we have a big problem due to the fact that our demographic structure is not healthy we don't have enough children in the german society so op pay as you go pension system is not sustainable and financed which is why the german government actually encouraged private savings to pay for the penguins on the later time but now interest rates are very very low and actually the inflation rate is higher than short term interest rates so that savings. actually eaten up by inflation and therefore the second branch of our pension system is also jeopardized so this is

your first general election who are you looking to steal votes from from just everybody and we think that we pick up issues which are are of concern for all german citizens for all german taxpayers we are absolutely an ideological on these issues we just want a healthy and sound euro policy we want to stop the rescue payments the transfers to the southern european countries so this is a goal which is shared by people of a wide variety of political opinions and we take votes from the more right wing parties like this if you in the f.t.p. in the same way as we do take votes from the social democrats or the greens or the leftist party the majority of your party members are white middle aged middle class men how are you hoping to attract voters from across germany there are not so many
2:51 pm
non white men in germany so it's not a surprise i mean we're not in america here no i mean i think that we have very strongly early presented to of the german society as a whole but it is true that we have more male members than female members which is perhaps an effect of the fact that men often take a stronger interest in economic issues than than women to say a party has faced allegations of nationalism then comparisons to other political groups like the native kingdom independence party how do you address those claims no this this comparison is absolutely uncalled for first of all we have no ties at all to the. party and second we are not european as the your party is quite. to the contrary we are in favor of european integration we have some criticisms to advance towards the present state of the european union but in
2:52 pm
general we are in favor of the european union we are absolutely not a nationalist party should you be elected where would your party take germany in the future we would head to a european union which is based much more on mutual respect and understanding then the current european union which being dominated by germany tries to impose german views in german attitudes on other countries which i think is inappropriate and undemocratic germany's already an economic leader in europe why shouldn't it take a stronger leadership role in europe as a whole i'm not against political leadership but actually i think that political leadership needs to be voted for and i don't really see that vote in the european union and i also think that every people in the european union should have the
2:53 pm
possibility to decide itself on its economic benefits and its will fear and its pursuit of happiness and if the pursuit of happiness is something we goes in line with perhaps a little less and enjoying some more leisure then thing that i think that's fine with me and you see the pursuit of that happiness being paid for with deutschmarks not euros where in the first place i see that we currently pay by heroes for the rescue operations on banks big financial institutes because all those transfers don't benefit the greek the greek population nor do they benefit the portuguese population they are actually in a severe economic crisis but rather all this money is just channeled to the banks who have had bad. management and who are now being rescued by german taxpayers and that's something i'm critical of whether this is paid as you or mark profess
