is see with me research i thank you for sharing some of your morning with us today the presidential palace in kabul has come under attack from militants over porters we're waiting for a press conference with president hamid karzai of plumes of smoke can we see it across the city after the assault the reportedly pitched heavily armed taliban fighters against presidential bodyguards and american troops a journalist has the latest for us from kabul. scene lasted just over an hour and while no civilian casualties have been reported in the afghan forces did manage to get the attack under control relatively quickly the fact that it did happen at the presidential palace they used id cards and vehicle id cards that are what the nato and i saw forces use reportedly and the fact that they were even able to

breach that gate what i saw from the outside of the gate and it's more of a blast wall around the green zone area as they were giant holes in the concrete walls and in the entire gate was destroyed apparently one vehicle was able to get inside and then one was stopped at the gate and then that's when the attack began the damage actually remarkably was minimal obviously it could have been a lot worse there actually schools and offices just outside of the gate into the presidential palace area and where the cia is. and the fact that there are no civilian deaths there and injuries reported is remarkable it would seem as especially considering this attack happened right when the peace talks are being negotiated in doha with the taliban and the attack happened on the presidential palace it would not seem possible that the afghan side could continue

forward with the peace talks when they're being attacked not even just on their own soil but right in there in their presidential palace. and afghan police have also reported eight women in a child of being killed by a roadside bomb in the capital this all coming not long after nato had control over afghanistan to local forces artie's tom barton now joining me live here in the studio to talk further about this tom thanks good to see you again this morning on the timing of the attack many are saying it couldn't be any more symbolic how did that handover go in general of security that is yeah it was last week when the international security assistance force led by nato handed over for the first time since two thousand and one. a security lead to afghan local forces they'll stay there till two thousand and fourteen to provide backup and it seems they may need to after this attack the fact that insurgents were able to attack the presidential palace in the heart of kabul the center of afghan power is going to be unnerving

some people especially at this time. the afghan led response to this attack the police chief local police chief says that they managed to suppress the insurgents and stop all of that action within two hours so they achieved they didn't cave in the right but this is the center of kabul they have all the resources around them further out in the countryside you know town confer could've been a very different story indeed but tom when it comes to the pullout of american and nato forces from afghanistan are they combining the pull out with some sort of diplomatic process to really try and heal the country fix the country and bring about some sort of long term peace they are trying to these peace talks have been mooted for quite a while and they are office has been opened by the taliban they haven't renounced violence as best as we go at the same time as these negotiations which raises a lot of questions can you do both but this attack came before the a very press

conference to discuss that issue so obviously a lot of people will be quite sort of shocked that there are going to discuss. the peace talks and then this attack comes at that very same moment there are problems as well with the peace talks karzai wants them to be afghan lead at the moment. some some rubbing up against between the coalition forces and and karzai is negotiators they want him to do it himself what about when it comes to these negotiations and really trying to get a serious set of peace talks implemented in afghanistan for the for the future of it all why do you think america wants or even finds the need to negotiate with the taliban they've been at war with the taliban for roughly ten twelve years yes i mean a lot of people have said you know the taliban has has clearly shown itself just today that it is it is not beyond trying anything it can and what it considers a situation of war to kill and destroy. afghan and

nato forces there i think it's hoped that it's a multi-pronged approach is to send in the try both with military force give the afghans their lead in security and negotiate as well whether that can succeed especially at the time and the taliban are still pursuing tax like this you know when you know if you want to go you mention the whole issue of the timing of this attack in the on the presidential palace in kabul the timing of the attack coinciding with the timing of peace talks with the taliban at the same venue as well do you think that sends a pretty clear message as to what taliban officials how they think how they feel about this peace process it may do i mean as i said they have opened that office in qatar perhaps that's just window dressing you know and they don't we're not really serious about peace talks at all and the potential is there for full and karzai for the u.s. and for the nato led forces to look very silly if they if the taliban feels that
