taliban fighters launched a heavy. presidential palace a week after the country's security forces took control over the u.s. says the u.s. now announcing plans to talk about peace with the taliban. edward snowden goes on the ground under the radar after sending moscow's international press corps to the caribbean. and washington. china and russia for the refusal of both countries to serve the whistleblowers head on a silver. this
2:01 am
is see with me research i thank you for sharing some of your morning with us today the presidential palace in kabul has come under attack from militants over porters we're waiting for a press conference with president hamid karzai of plumes of smoke can we see it across the city after the assault the reportedly pitched heavily armed taliban fighters against presidential bodyguards and american troops a journalist has the latest for us from kabul. scene lasted just over an hour and while no civilian casualties have been reported in the afghan forces did manage to get the attack under control relatively quickly the fact that it did happen at the presidential palace they used id cards and vehicle id cards that are what the nato and i saw forces use reportedly and the fact that they were even able to
2:02 am
breach that gate what i saw from the outside of the gate and it's more of a blast wall around the green zone area as they were giant holes in the concrete walls and in the entire gate was destroyed apparently one vehicle was able to get inside and then one was stopped at the gate and then that's when the attack began the damage actually remarkably was minimal obviously it could have been a lot worse there actually schools and offices just outside of the gate into the presidential palace area and where the cia is. and the fact that there are no civilian deaths there and injuries reported is remarkable it would seem as especially considering this attack happened right when the peace talks are being negotiated in doha with the taliban and the attack happened on the presidential palace it would not seem possible that the afghan side could continue
2:03 am
forward with the peace talks when they're being attacked not even just on their own soil but right in there in their presidential palace. and afghan police have also reported eight women in a child of being killed by a roadside bomb in the capital this all coming not long after nato had control over afghanistan to local forces artie's tom barton now joining me live here in the studio to talk further about this tom thanks good to see you again this morning on the timing of the attack many are saying it couldn't be any more symbolic how did that handover go in general of security that is yeah it was last week when the international security assistance force led by nato handed over for the first time since two thousand and one. a security lead to afghan local forces they'll stay there till two thousand and fourteen to provide backup and it seems they may need to after this attack the fact that insurgents were able to attack the presidential palace in the heart of kabul the center of afghan power is going to be unnerving
2:04 am
some people especially at this time. the afghan led response to this attack the police chief local police chief says that they managed to suppress the insurgents and stop all of that action within two hours so they achieved they didn't cave in the right but this is the center of kabul they have all the resources around them further out in the countryside you know town confer could've been a very different story indeed but tom when it comes to the pullout of american and nato forces from afghanistan are they combining the pull out with some sort of diplomatic process to really try and heal the country fix the country and bring about some sort of long term peace they are trying to these peace talks have been mooted for quite a while and they are office has been opened by the taliban they haven't renounced violence as best as we go at the same time as these negotiations which raises a lot of questions can you do both but this attack came before the a very press
2:05 am
conference to discuss that issue so obviously a lot of people will be quite sort of shocked that there are going to discuss. the peace talks and then this attack comes at that very same moment there are problems as well with the peace talks karzai wants them to be afghan lead at the moment. some some rubbing up against between the coalition forces and and karzai is negotiators they want him to do it himself what about when it comes to these negotiations and really trying to get a serious set of peace talks implemented in afghanistan for the for the future of it all why do you think america wants or even finds the need to negotiate with the taliban they've been at war with the taliban for roughly ten twelve years yes i mean a lot of people have said you know the taliban has has clearly shown itself just today that it is it is not beyond trying anything it can and what it considers a situation of war to kill and destroy. afghan and
2:06 am
nato forces there i think it's hoped that it's a multi-pronged approach is to send in the try both with military force give the afghans their lead in security and negotiate as well whether that can succeed especially at the time and the taliban are still pursuing tax like this you know when you know if you want to go you mention the whole issue of the timing of this attack in the on the presidential palace in kabul the timing of the attack coinciding with the timing of peace talks with the taliban at the same venue as well do you think that sends a pretty clear message as to what taliban officials how they think how they feel about this peace process it may do i mean as i said they have opened that office in qatar perhaps that's just window dressing you know and they don't we're not really serious about peace talks at all and the potential is there for full and karzai for the u.s. and for the nato led forces to look very silly if they if the taliban feels that
2:07 am
those two of two a pretend peace settlement and then use it you know use the let them drop their guard and then attack them i mean. it's very difficult to know whether it'll go ahead on any of those fronts but certainly the u.s. and the afghans still hopeful that they can get something to look into or not he's done by now that i just on it there's a massive attack in on the presidential palace in kabul this morning of the latest on that from you or perhaps if there's more to come we'll check in with you throughout the day artie's tom potter thank you. now stephen soon as i spoke to him a bit earlier here on the program is a professor of international studies at the university of san francisco he believes that no matter how strong the afghan army may be it will still never win its people in the country a deeply opposed to the current government promises that even if they're very well trained even if they have the very best equipment. strings of the afghan government
2:08 am
relative to the taliban and other forms of resistance it doesn't have credibility with the afghan people and while the vast majority do not subscribe. extremist ideology many are very frustrated with corruption and not an arbitrariness of the government including ongoing acts of repression. all of the foreign presence to prop up this government and this this kind of environment leads to the rise of the stream so it's not just security question month. here doubt he will keep you up to date throughout the day on the situation in afghanistan after this brazen attack right in the heart of kabul. for now the world's leading intelligence agencies have found themselves chasing their own tails off to edward snowden again slipped through the global surveillance web that he exposed and the n.s.a. whistleblower is now reported to be in hiding after sending off a plane packed with journalists to cuba at the very same flight that he was
2:09 am
supposed to be on his pull scott reports from the west road and was last thought to be. the only thing that we know for certain is that edward snowden's exact location . the white house suggested that they still believe that edward snowden is. in the airport terminal building behind me at the ecuadorian embassy of the country that he is seeking political asylum or at another location we simply do not know now all reports point to the fact that he did in fact arrive here. on sunday at around five o'clock in the afternoon aeroflot flight inbound from hong kong was where he was in hiding for a fortnight after blowing the whistle on the n.s.a. surveillance operation but he has not been spotted since now russia's security service the f.s.b. say they do not know where he is. blogging websites and
2:10 am
social networks to question whether he even set foot in russia in the first place another thing that we do know is that ecuador is the country where he's seeking political asylum it was widely that that was going to be his target destination his final intended destination but with wiki leaks pulling the strings and organizing the whole thing. whether it has all been. so elaborate. as you say the world's press a flyer on an empty plane to cuba or a plane containing edward snowden. to say that snowden is ahead of the game he's keeping not just the world's press but also the american authorities guessing as to his exact whereabouts but you get the feeling with the world watching that snowden's next move in this game of cat and mouse could be crucial. and i got to piss going off he was. bound flight that edward snowden was supposed to take it
2:11 am
told us of the confusion on board when the press realized the whistleblower had given them the slip i just got off the plane we just landed in hawaii on a coming from moscow thirteen hour long winded and walked in i see back and shooting me to up to the very last point everyone was still expecting edward snowden to shore up to board that wing even when we were sitting there the whole plane was packed even when we a walk to the doors and it was taxiing the way to take off still everyone was waiting for him at least to find him on the plane and when we were allowed to get up from our seats went to the seats. where they were supposed to be sitting and saw that they were empty some journalists were actually looking for them inside the airplane checking bathrooms checking places where mr snowden could have been hiding since the very beginning it seemed almost one hundred percent that he was going to take this flight the increased security in the airport crowds of journalists were
2:12 am
additional factors boosting these expectations you've got to personify there and although the dozens of journalists after the scoop of the year were left disappointed others made the most of it one of those is seat seventeen a that was booked for snowden on the plane it made the very most of his fifteen minutes of fame on twitter in the first tweet to see it without a pass just seemed upset writing i feel. it was also a little annoyed that it couldn't make conversation with the seat next to it because a b.b.c. reporter was sitting on it seventeen i was also a little apprehensive of all the angry journalists and frankly irritated by no sign of the strong. well i hear about see we did speak to daniel ellsberg i'm not a prominent american whistleblower he exposed pentagon papers back in one nine hundred seventy one all to do with washington's a decision making issues during the vietnam war he believes that the end of the day
2:13 am
very few people measure up to snowden sacrifice. i think he would be in much the same cell as bradley manning is not in the same cell or comical any could be under the national defense authorization act he could be in military detention but even if not he would be in a jail cell somewhere as incommunicado as bradley manning is for the last three years so i think he was very wise to make it disposers outside of this country and i think that we should be listening to what he has to say because what so far i've heard him say is very eloquently put in shows much better judgment than those of his colleagues who went along it's clearly unconstitutional but they were all purchased and i would say the charm carries calling him a traitor it's just. he's no more a traitor than i am and i am not all that words used by a president and a vice president both of whom by the way to lost their office for criminality nixon
2:14 am
and i knew i think he is in the tradition of me can hail the first american to be convicted of trial in fact for giving secrets to americans he said i regret that i have but one life to give for my country because his country was america and he was hanged by the british it was a spy for george washington i think that edward snowden has shown a willingness to give his life for this country and there's no american idol or deserves to be honored at this moment. or after a very short break here on the i'm back with more from washington about washington's frustration over its loss with edward snowden. good luck. kirby was able to build the world's most sophisticated.
2:16 am
this is. a washington is showered threats and ironic remarks towards the countries which edward snowden the whistleblower has used as stepping stones on his quest to freedom it's one china of the consequences of allowing a thirty year old to flee to russia while venomously hinting that both moscow and beijing a far from being bastions of free speech. the white house says hong kong officials had received washington's request to arrest no then and still made quoted the liberal choice to let him go so washington clearly takes it as a snub from china here's the president's press secretary we're just not buying that this was a technical decision by a hong kong immigration official this was a deliberate choice by the government to release a fugitive despite a valid arrest warrant and that decision unquestionably has
2:17 am
a negative impact on the u.s. china relationship we were never there in response to the u.s. request to arrest noted in the government of hong kong issued a statement saying that the documents the u.s. provided did not fully comply with the legal requirements on the hong kong law but also in that same statement the government of hong kong said they wanted more information from the u.s. government about the hacking of computer systems in hong kong by u.s. government agencies and that was one of edward snowden's revelations snowden gave china a great political counterargument to u.s. constant accusations against china now the u.s. can't accuse china of cyber attacks without being accused of hypocrisy so there is an interesting dynamic behind all this the u.s. one and china where the semi autonomous government of hong kong to give them the man who had leaked u.s. secrets but one of those secrets is about activities of the u.s. government against china so it's possible that china's dilemma was to either think edward snowden or to arrest hong kong says they've done everything in accordance with their own laws now as far as russia edward snowden has been in transit in
2:18 am
russia and russian authorities say they have no legal authority to arrest him but u.s. politicians and pundits on television use what seems like a cold war rhetoric to present as the enemies that snowden is helping and the imagination of some german is running. as wild as they joke about how edward snowden is being briefed by the russian president in one form of social also on one of the news channels that russia and china are going to use this to embarrass the u.s. one should argue it's known as revelation. that embarrass the u.s. not russia or china but that's exactly what's happening now u.s. policymakers are doing everything possible to divert attention away from snowden's revelations and certainly one of the one way of doing this is to present it as a cold war style cat and mouse chase that way you have us media now almost cheering for edward snowden's capture although just a little while ago some of the same journalists were grateful for great for
2:19 am
a greater public awareness of the fact that the u.s. government is spying on millions of people who have done nothing wrong and of course has no illusions as who what lengths the u.s. government will go to catch him edward snowden also said it's not the government persecution that he fears most he said the greatest fear that i have about the outcome of these disclosures is that nothing will change from how it's developing it doesn't look like things will change for americans anytime soon but for the world be occasions of his revelations could be significant for example the fact that the u.s. now can't accuse china of cyber attacks without being accused of hypocrisy. or should the corresponding gone. charlie mcgrath one of the founders of an unseen mainstream news while wide awake news he believes the us should try and give up during the rest of the world. we saw a carney played out today press secretary carney talking about we demand this and we don't accept that you know we're not talking to children although it seems that this government in its his quest for all the power wants to talk down its nose to
2:20 am
the world as if they are children but the fact of the matter is these are sovereign nations of china wants to not seen him back to that seat because they don't want him to endure political prosecution then they then apparently have every right not to be the government's upset the power brokers in washington d.c. are very upset the security desk you have is very upset this is obvious by their actuated that everything that they're doing is trying to smoke and we're shift the blame shift the focus from the information has been revealed it tell the perp on to the person who revealed the information it really is like i said i hope he makes it to where he's going standing upright and breathing but the true story here is the decimation of personal freedom inside of this country the united states. and in the meantime makoto has reportedly given snowden refugee papers it is considering his current asylum request but its foreign minister has declined to reveal exactly where the whistleblower is snowden struck to ecuador is being organized by wiki

leaks that's according to chief julian assange the details now to london and artie's party boy. the songs are saying that they are in contact with edward snowden and the wiki leaks legal representative traveling with him they said that they are both healthy and in good spirits and in a secret location that they can't disclose now they've spoken a lot about the very bullying and what they called the threatening behavior of the u.s. administration in relation to a number of nations three which edward snowden has been reported to be traveling the fact that they've been demanding for his extradition now wiki leaks have said that edward snowden is north to trace as the u.s. secretary of state was calling him a yes but he's a hero as we know that wiki leaks has been assisting edward snowden both with his asylum request to ecuador as well as with legal representation so we're going to be following this story as it develops for you from london. online for you right now

at r.t. dot com when the pos catches up with you decades later germany opens an investigation into a nazi s.s. come on the squad found he's been living in america for more than sixty years after reportedly sneaking into the country claiming he never fort in the second world war a website has much more on that right now. on lucky number seven for silvio berlusconi who receives that number of years behind bars after being convicted of paying for sex with an underage prostitute he said i would want to talk on. thank you for joining us here on r.t. lack of water could literally be a reason why it's been so hard to dampen the fiery relationship between israel and

palestine taps in the homes of arab villages in the west bank they run dry most of the time if they complain israel doesn't satisfy even the minimum water needs artie's policy of the story. the taps in hamad mohammed's home are there more as a sign of hope there's been no water through them for five long months. and the municipality does not give us water as these should water it comes through our pipes twice a year early men and women go through an hour's drive north and all did start another day in the office the mayor of the front settlement has lots on his mind but not a lack of water we have one big water tank with supplies water also to both our villages which are on the other side of the security fence but basically they get their water supply from the water tank off the front more than three hundred thousand palestinians across the west bank are not connected to water network according to palestinian human rights groups israeli officials say the number is

less than half that since the one nine hundred sixty seven occupation or water resources are exclusively in his radio hands but a joint group established back in one thousand nine hundred three to ensure supplies has left the palestinians short changed israel has repeatedly made as a condition for its approval of palestinian projects that the palestinian authority approve new wells and pipelines for israeli settlements the palestinian authority mainly because it's desperate for water for its population has approved virtually every one of the israeli settlement projects the palestinians weren't left behind. their opinion community wanted to invest their money that the palestinian authority will have such systems like we have in a fraud like we have in the whole of israel unfortunately what happened their money
