it was michelle like me at school and now. it's someone totally different someone i don't know who. says it can grant asylum to the on the run whistleblower edward snowden while he's not on its soil the n.s.a. leaker remains holed up at a moscow airport. on the heels of snowden's revelations over britain's huge phone and online tapping it turns out the u.k. police secretly monitoring social networks on a daily basis. egypt's military bracing itself for mass rallies with the opposition readying to take to the streets to vent their anger at president morsi was about to mark his first year in the top job. nine pm in moscow i matras a good to have you with us here on r t our top story ecuador says there are
1:01 pm
obstacles in granting asylum to whistleblower edward snowden the development revealed in a press conference by the country's government in the ecuadorian capital quito snowden himself remain somewhere in the transit zone of moscow's sheremetyevo airport to see caffein off has the latest. he got to russia because originally he was supposed to fly to havana cuba presumably on the way to ecuador that's how he was able to get to russia on a transfer a flight he doesn't actually have a bit of these in order to russia and he ran into a few problems number one is that the united states has cancelled his passport so because he missed that original flight to cuba he has to book another one party do that without a passport good question the second problem force is there's now issues with ecuador in order to apply for asylum here portly needs to be an ecuadorian soil and actually we did hear from the secretary of political affairs abedi told about this issue at a press conference earlier thursday and here's what she had to say the call during government has not authorized and is sort of safe passage document allowing mr
1:02 pm
snowden to come to our country we also have not considered snowden's asylum request because he is not an ecuadorian territory as the law requires us. so what does that mean he can't get to ecuador because right now he doesn't have documents to fly there and he also can't get to for example the ecuadorian embassy in moscow this is what julian assange did with the after an embassy in london because he doesn't have a visa to be in russia and the russian officials haven't indicated that they're willing to help them to do so so he's essentially stuck in limbo for the forseeable future now we did speak to air a flow that's the airline that's operating those flights to have an a q but they said that he is not on any of the passenger lists for the coming few days conan reportedly did check into a capsule hotel at the transfer area here at the sheremetyevo airport this is one of those you know temporary little hotels we can get a room with a bathroom to stay he reportedly remained there for about four hours and then left with a group of men unclear where he left to but to the best of our knowledge at this
1:03 pm
point he remains inside that transit zone in that airport so far the u.s. has been using traditional diplomatic channels to try to get him back and the americans can't actually ask russia to extradite him because there is no extradition treaty between the two countries they can ask the russians to for example expel snowden but president vladimir putin here and russia said that he is not willing to do that at this moment but we did also hear president obama speak at a press conference in senegal he said that he has not personally spoken to for example the chinese president or president putin about the snowden case sort of trying to downplay now taking a softer stance on this issue he said quote i'm not going to have the case of a suspect who we've been trying to extradite suddenly be elevated to the point where i've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues but so far the administration seems to be still determined to try to get snowden but not to the point of ruffling too many diplomatic feathers with the countries that it deals with at this point. well
1:04 pm
here's an interesting thing take a look at this document here that has caused some initial confusion over snowden's status this was a piece of paper that was issued by a person in the bureaucracy of the ecuadorian government and it granted to allow snowden the ability to go into the country but it turns out that this document was issued by a government employee without any real government oversight in the matter and it has no legal power so and as we understand now snowden has to be in the country in ecuador in order to apply for asylum there so this piece of paper that appeared to be a significant document basically turned out to be worthless after all of that but there are human rights organizations russian ones which say that they would support russians snowden rather staying on the russian soil throughout this ordeal. alexei or chef he has more on that. well the world decides where the edward snowden is hero or villain russia's human rights activists have clearly made their minds up
1:05 pm
it's not too often they see eye to eye with russia's president but they welcome to put his decision not to extradite the former ana say employee still outraged by washington st mint of the whistleblower the ask more school to take more than just a neutral stand. such as a good citizen in the current situation russia has to do everything in its power to aid snowden he cites for those exact principles that the u.s. doubts that in fact transgressions yet he and i think russia should now act according to the law but to not let the man be led like a lamb to slaughter. the head of russia's anti-corruption committee went even further to come on of says he's ready to write a letter to putin urging him to keep snowden in russia is it. despite the fact that he has no passport let him go to those countries that are willing to accept him we cannot act like a weak country that understands exactly what's going on but at the same time says
1:06 pm
no stay away from this. edward snowden has never asked for political asylum in russia but with heavy support coming from the human rights camp you couldn't rule out a positive response from the kremlin if you did his active asylum pleas are still pending a decision from ecuador and venezuela snowden himself is still presumably sitting tight inside most schools airport which leaves a lot of space for more twists and turns to this saga former officers of security services describe this snowden as a gift to the intelligence they usually use for an exchange between countries but with such strong reaction coming from russia's human rights activists many agree that acts to dieting snowden now would be like shooting oneself in the foot. reporting from moscow it appears the u.k. is sweeping surveillance is going beyond the g.c. fall into line eavesdropping a special police units reportedly been scanning reporter citizens are posting lie and social networks despite the fact that all facebook and twitter users are

actually choosing to make their data public anyway the news has sparked major concerns among privacy groups r.t. sara for. we know when we when we post something on facebook there is it's well known of the possibility of course that that's going to be seen you're putting it out there in the public sphere but i think these revelations really causing concern because of the state of the intelligence gathering this is twenty four hours a day seven days a week your facebook twitter you tube and it's a little known unit in the metropolitan police known as succulent it's social media intelligence and they've been working as a lead to the team of around seventeen offices combing through this information recently we've been looking at the rise for example of the number of arrests the police have been making on the back of what people have put on their twitter accounts but of course now you've got this in the context of the revelations over
1:08 pm
prison and that's really blowing the debate wide open about intelligence gathering in the u.k. and the u.s. and about exactly what privacy means in the digital age we'll talk more to us about this i'm joined by big brother what is he directs and the. other thank you very much for joining us i thought every time that we speak this sort of black mirror esque reality i mean it really does seeing the stuff of fiction is becoming part of daily life and that what we're putting out there is being constantly monitored i think also they could very importantly prison of course you've got information being gathered should be hidden from the world the scene is private but of course assortment this is stuff we're putting in a public forum so why is this a problem surely this is exactly what the police should be doing when not saying that the shouldn't take place what we're saying is that is it necessary is a proportionate is actually in the public interest and if so then there needs to be
1:09 pm
a framework there to see consistency throughout all of the police forces huge storm at the moment the u.s. and u.k. . intelligence gathering often the revelations about. being described as prisons a little is it that bad well i think for a lot of people it will be that i mean when you come down to the very small nuances of a it's you know it's all private information of what we perceive to be private and you know we all know the digital world is and christian and things that we know it isn't actually as private as we'd like it to be in so we do feel like i'm in a state basis there should be some safeguards in place for people to go around in and complete freedom unless we do something wrong then the same should be put forward in terms of social media cover that to go to get about the information about. the certainly going to be the further discussion about this still rage is of course on the back of the revelations that prism despite their cost cutting

love life but there is a lot of sick stuff going on on this planet for example according to bloomberg a hospital in chicago has been accused by the f.b.i. of cutting the throats of patients for big bags of cash a tracheotomy is a procedure to get air directly into the windpipe of someone who can't breathe by cutting a hole into it and f.b.i. affidavit based on tape recording says that the hospital knowingly and purposely sedated patients to the point that they couldn't breathe properly and would need tracheotomy and as you know in the u.s. health care system nothing comes. cheap trick out of his own days cost about one hundred sixty thousand dollars a pop this alleged conspiracy between doctors and management is not the first of its kind at this hospital and administrator and five doctors have already been charged for medicare fraud for giving and receiving kickbacks not only is having

believe that with the international community usually intervening in one of the side can be postmortems to be when it claims to be impartial and we political considerations multiply that time by sir geoffrey nice british lawyer out prosecute somebody on the loss of each of the hague and cases before the international criminal court sir geoffrey thank you very much for your time isn't that all tribunals to some extent delivering victor's justice yes. historically they delivered a form of victor's justice starting in the first world war second world war. japan and in germany. when the modern tribunals came about yugoslavia and it was said that they were there to try all sides so that would not be victor's justice on the permanent international criminal court is specifically instructed to

look at conflicts in the wronged so that all sides might be prosecuted. unhappily it's not always the case that the tribunals have been able to prosecute all sides the yugoslavia tribunal did attempt to prosecute all sides but the rwanda tribunal failed and there are many people who think that the cases of the international criminal court in africa failed to look at all now i'm sure you encounter that in your legal practice and i saw it in the years of covering conflicts that war can turn pretty ordinary nonviolent people into mass murderers and the nature of that transformation is very very complex so i would argue if the war environment itself ignoring these fact and judging these people by the norms of peace time doesn't do justice doesn't he your question reaches the heart of a problem.
