spanish. visit. a rage in egypt supporters and opponents of president morsi clash. reportedly leaving. muslim brotherhood headquarters is set. to trade with us labeling it as instruments of blackmail over the political. brutal footage from syria. claiming to show rebel fighters beheading supporters of the assad government.
2:01 pm
this is r.t. with the twenty four hours a day fresh clashes have erupted in egypt between president morsy backers and his opponents with reports saying a protester has been shot dead in the city of alexandria seventy people are said to have been injured with police using tear gas against the demonstrators rival groups are staging rallies ahead of a massive opposition protest on sunday marking the egyptian leaders first year in office true reports now from. these are not east street battles that are ranging between days in support of the president and that is against him agents can still see about eccentric this started this afternoon after demonstration by our two government protesters and descended into the scenes when they were confronted by those who supported the president the police had after are trying to contain the
2:02 pm
violence using tear gas however they are unable to control the situation and have been fatalities because you had reports that protesters have attacked the missing motherhood headquarters in the closest city of exams here you have any states this is a worrying trend here in egypt where when having these very bloody clashes between civilians as the country becomes increasingly divided it's i mean you are here in the capital as you can see behind me hundreds of thousands of people have come out in support of the president and they're sitting there cooling just to see as a red line they say they voted for the president's plan and that's what they want their voice to be heights and if the president is serious china should be used to change it should be through the ballot box not be forced by the streets it's very different scene just a few kilometers away in that race when opponents of morsi have gathered already and i intend to thousands as well i'm largely spearheaded by crosstrees campaign for the rebels and they are calling for president morsi to step down and they say that this is a make or break moment it's
2:03 pm
a worrying sign the country's becoming divided increasingly violent in the lead up to the first anniversary of president obama knows his rule but you people are worrying are going to see a lot more fatalities in the future. let's get more on the situation in egypt from political analyst and author william engdahl william despite morsi clearly having a lot of support there in egypt there's a lot of anger against him and the muslim brotherhood at the moment why is that well i think good a number of issues number one is trying to ram a shari'a constitution down down the throats of the egyptian people and that goes against egyptian cultural tradition in ninety eight. early percent of the population are sunni muslim but it's a tradition of tolerance for of religious groups the coptic. other islamic groups and so forth. the other thing is the economy morsi has has done nothing to improve the economy and economy has he generated youth unemployment
2:04 pm
bulges explosive and that i think is a lot of. treats right now but the other thing is the military hasn't yet we did as to whether. they are going to back to continue to back morsi as they have done under washington enormous washington pressure their kind of them washington for military aid and have been for decades but the i think the interesting new factor is that the time iraq the campaign the reorganized the opposition group. that led the protests a year ago on the streets in tahrir square and elsewhere they have claimed to gather fifty million petitions asking for morsi to step down so i think this is to make and break situation the obama administration continues to back the muslim brotherhood which is a very unfortunate thing but that's part of the larger geopolitical agenda that washington and the state department have built up over the past years but that is
2:05 pm
interesting is it that washington so should be supporting the muslim brotherhood now and of course washing did of course support the uprising that brought morsi to power but the opposition is calling for a second revolution because they feel they are not happy that there's been a democratic process there in the country is washington not going to play a part and then a possible second revolution well i think there's there's a question whether that was a democratic election because the a lot of the opposition to the muslim brotherhood were simply in disarray and washington pressed for early elections the military thought they had a done deal with morsi that he would be figureheads and as soon as morsi got into power he remained on that elite fired the heads of the chiefs of staff and so forth . and in bed with backing from washington to a pharmacy in the street is not a muslim but is it good gesture to say are you sure you still hold opposition there so what happens with him just quickly on sunday clearly the opposition according to fresh air lections it's clearly going to be
2:06 pm
a massive turn. out of opposition. supporters is sunday going to be a major turning point in egypt's current history now or i think there's no question that it's going to be massive morsi has already indicated he's going to take a year to one kind of room force state power reaction to try to terrorize the the opposition and to. disbanding but that's not going to work at this point that i've talked with people who are in the tahrir square demonstrations two years ago and there's do that and this is like a festering boil that has been boiling as long as morsi has shown that he's done nothing to improve the fundamentals of the economy all you've done is introduce or try to introduce a fundamental constitution that would turn. turn egypt in into a serious state and a theocratic state and most of gyptian serve don't want that they want to have their religion in private as are of course entitled to but mark to have the state
2:07 pm
dictate to them exactly what that's going to look like. great to talk to thank you very much indeed for your perspective on this political analyst and author their life on r.t. if. the growing threat of terrorism is appearing at the top of the agenda of the u.k. government is the intelligence agencies and armed forces come out as winners in the spending review it comes just over a month since the brutal machete murder of a british soldier in london which the killer said was revenge for the u.k.'s military campaigns and it has pretty boy has been finding out there are mounting delts over whether the war on terror is actually making the british safe. very cues to packing a soldier to death on the streets of london and now preparing to stand trial until the debris not sets back so we can see the problems that you described see the chilling message an indication of what drove the attack but the politicians say
2:08 pm
it's nonsense it is but you don't need to read the speech to egypt it's a pretty easy to say equally. twenty two eighty leap between this move that you. would use for you to see all the actions that would be sure to the students who are risking their lives in a good for the sake of freedom but there are those who took part in those military campaigns fast hand who disagree jerry says he was disillusioned by the reality of what fighting for freedom in the name of britain safety and volved compared to some of the excesses in afghanistan and iraq. which is a very serious called kind of charge the lie but it's absolutely true and we're very lucky that they've already been so few attacks law they said one of the banners we went to afghanistan under was peace peacekeeping and in our peacekeeping operation we ran out of explosive artillery ammunition that gulf between how the war is presented and the bleak reality is all too evident for many in britain's
2:09 pm
vast muslim community in contact with our friends friends and family or back home in reno what exactly is going on over there while we see. some of the media reports from the u.k. or the u.k. politicians there are speeches in parliament is not reflecting the realities for afghanistan the war and yet there's been almost no public or political discussion about the western wars that drove the attack in which is because they obviously want to prosecute the wars the wars in afghanistan iraq and the project and have a look at the projects in the middle east is very longstanding it predicts not eleven to meet their public policy documents which side that hopefully because they want to keep. doing these things there are plans for syria iran is on the horizon as well they need to keep growing up this kind of audiological and continue to attempt. the killing from the real world our mission in afghanistan does remain vital to our national security to prevent that country from being
2:10 pm
a safe haven to al qaeda from where they might plan attacks on the u.k. so i think you have to be particularly stupid as a prime minister. if you invade other people's countries and you're like do you care about the list of terror plots boiled by m i five on u.k. soil makes for frightening reading since the religion track a number of people who believe that a clash of the civilizations between white persons and muslims is inevitable has gone out to almost two thirds of the population far right movements such as the english defense league have been using the incident to fan the flames and islamophobia in the u.k. creating tensions that make it harder for ordinary british muslims to speak out about u.k. foreign policy many muslims are afraid. to extremists . if you speak to most of them sympathetic to the message of.
2:11 pm
his actions because they are against any kind of terrorism any kind of terrorist. or in any other country including afghanistan iraq or anywhere else the war on terror has always been sold as keeping britain safe but to those who object to the ukase involvement overseas the savage attack merely serves as an example that it may be doing the exact opposite. london well the u.k. intelligence agencies will be getting one hundred million pounds a year from twenty fifteen the chancellor george osborne says this is because they are on the front line and need a boost to their resources well let's talk more about this with british george galloway for the respect party joining me live now from london george security surely a priority so they deserve this money don't they. well there probably need every penny of it and more because britain is in very real clear and present danger from
2:12 pm
terrorism both from within and from without but only a fool or a knave would seek to separate british foreign policy from the danger of terrorism and the mayor of london i'm afraid is a fool and the prime minister is a knave only an idiot could imagine that as ken livingstone just pointed out in that report that if you go around the world invading and occupying other people's countries you're not going to generate a real danger to yourself blowback as can called it but we've gone one step farther known in syria as before in libya we're actually giving guns and money to the very terrorist extremists who are attacking us on the streets of our own capital city it must be a policy which virtually qualifies as insanity and an insane policy home is not going to keep people safe so british foreign policy back that we saw in
2:13 pm
which many would say it's surprising that there haven't been more attacks like that no well that's right and i think the intelligence services have probably thwarted several but you don't have to take my want for it you have the video of the mob that ours in themselves telling us why they were doing it we had the martyrdom videos of the maniacs who blew themselves up on hundreds of others on seven seven two thousand and five in london on the underground on a london bus and they too told us why they were doing it i see no reason to doubt them and yet and yet david cameron will say what happens in afghanistan is so vital to our national security to people like you walking the streets in london and the u.k. . but it's having the opposite effect it's making us more imperiled we're our situation is more dangerous the more we attack and invade other people
2:14 pm
the more we arm and finance extreme. fanatics he headed a christian bishop if people can hear me beheaded a christian bishop just yesterday and videoed it in front of women and children watching it and put up on the internet was chanting the name of god they're paid for by us by the same david cameron who tells us we need one hundred million pounds to go to the security services to protect us from the very people he's employing as agents in the struggle in syria and can i quickly ask you how is all of this now impacting on the divisions we're seeing in society there in the u.k. how worried are you about the anti muslim sentiment that appears to be now building there in the u.k. something i know that you're quite an expert on. well i'm worried about it but we shouldn't overestimate it there have been isolated. which may be
2:15 pm
pathetically. insubstantial upon mosques and muslim institutions of those kinds i have been fatalities in individual attacks on muslims but the vast majority of the british people are not like like this is not a country where fascism has any traction after all together with russia the feet of fascism in the living memory of some people still alive today so people enjoy. giving hitler salute and wearing swastikas like the people who are doing these things are never going to find much traction in britain nor most british people according to the opinion polls blame the government only eleven percent of the british people in the last opinion poll support david cameron's policy of arming and financing these fanatics in syria and even in the iraq war before we knew it was built upon a lot of lies the majority of british people were against it the problem is in the
2:16 pm
building behind me oh well the boys in the bubble follow the leader whatever he has to say although even inside that bubble the beheading of a christian bishop may prove a turning point just like the beating of a heart on video on you tube by the same kind of people i'm month or two ago decisively began swinging in british public opinion away from these fanatics george galloway thanks so much for your point of view on all of this great to talk to that live in london george kind of a u.k. member of parliament well still to come here in our tease searching for snowden the whistleblower was nowhere to be seen but he's uncertain future is still causing a diplomatic firestorm examine his potential next steps and bring you expert analysis in just a couple minutes saute life in moscow. you
2:17 pm
know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize that everything is. i'm tom harpur welcome to the big picture. whistleblowers in principle we are told every society needs them to expose the excesses of those in power the reality is very different though if you're someone like bradley manning or edward snowden you literally take your life in your own hands the message is clear obey and be silent or face dire consequences. do we speak your language. or music programs and documentaries in spanish matters to you breaking news a little tonnage of angles stories. you hear.
2:18 pm
the spanish find out more visit. continues here in auntie edward snowden has become the centerpiece of a boiling diplomatic row between ecuador and washington there was a blow to expose u.s. intelligence operations meanwhile still believed to be stuck in the transit zone of moscow's sheremetyevo airport. as the details from their. although the ecuadorian officials haven't exactly explained tower even if mr snowden would be able to gain asylum from their country they have certainly responded quite brashly in the sense that they've preemptively renounced a trade agreement which is known as the andean trade preference act that is a trade agreement that sort of gave ecuador beneficial preferences in its business
2:19 pm
relations with the united states preemptively saying that this was in response to quote a blackmail of ecuador over in the former n.s.a. contractor asylum request now. officials us speaking at an early morning press conference also announce that they are offering a twenty three million dollar donation to the united states supposedly to help the united states for human rights training certainly a lot of public public statements public reaction sort of trying to indicate that accord or will not bow to u.s. pressure in regard to the asylum request over the mr snowden an ecuadorian official said that they have not yet granted him asylum request in fact in order for him to formally apply he would have to do so an ecuadorian soil what does that mean that would either mean being in a ecuador which he can't do at the moment since he has no passport or any means of getting there or that would mean applying at an embassy since embassy is and embassy grounds are essentially considered to be official soil of whatever country
2:20 pm
is in question again snowden is presumed to be stuck in that transit area so not quite clear how he could get that there has been some speculation that i could or would grant mr snowden special papers that would allow him to leave and perhaps purchase a ticket and apply for asylum but again no confirmation that that's happened so again more questions than answers in regards to the fate of mr snowden. so he has become the subject of a diplomatic rift between quito and washington but i could isn't the only potential destination for the whistleblower let's take a look at what else he could end up. well he left for russia from hong kong and many expected more scope to be a very brief stopover it was believed the thirty year old would then head to cuba and then of course on to quito in ecuador but of course the whistle blower never turned up for that have bound flight well let's just go through all of snowden's potential options one by one cuba now that appears to be out of the picture a u.s.
2:21 pm
government report claims that the caribbean nation will not accept american fugitives snowden had previously said that iceland is also a country which shares his values and we could mix affiliates now await word from the interior minister there now what about venezuela has been willing to open its doors to the thirty year old nicolas maduro the president he's been praising snowden for what he has done and that other south american destination ecuador looks likely but cannot yet grant him asylum in the way they did for julian assange and that's because snowden is not actually on ecuador in territory at the moment or indeed at their embassy in moscow well for more on this story make sure you log on to r.t. dot com because we've got the latest on edward snowden and we're also tracking the reaction to his situation on social media the moment so much speculation so much being said that's all just a click away for you right now on r.t. dot com.
2:22 pm
let's get some expert analysis on the story investigative journalist duncan campbell joins us now live from brighton in the u.k. duncan snowden reportedly been in russia now for nearly a week now i know you're an intelligence expert and there's so much speculation about what's going on at the moment what do you think there's something going on behind the scenes between the f.s.b. in the cia over this man. i.e. how to. the fact that he's not physically being seen grazers questions about how he's being accommodated in the time being. i go with the school that.
2:23 pm
mr putin was having a little bit of amusement. watching the circus of journalists disappear off to her and then come back with nothing but you know i think it's fun for the russians sure and you are you are an investigative journalist as well of course are you surprised how snowden managed to evade that pack of journalists how did he do it. while we don't know whether the rumor that goes around the the heated world of these kind of events was true in the first place there was a rumor that he had a seat on the specific point to the bomber. there was an empty seat. but did snowden book that the f.s.b. book it i doubt the day i first read it but somebody may have another purpose in mind and of course he hasn't has he hasn't gone he's stuck there now without a passport in a transit zone do you think he's actually in trouble now because the longer this goes on it does seem a bit strange or do you think he will eventually get out of this predicament. you
2:24 pm
know i can't. a lot depends on on russia but i think the russian game will bespeak to stand back and as an international territory we can do nothing and wait for other players to act but i do think the focus is wrong because all of this distraction about snowden and where the years and what he might do next has completely undermined the tremendous gravity of the successive documents and revelations that he's made about the the scope of american and allied spying on the civil and commercial affairs of the world and would you say he's a hero or a villain in that he's betrayed his country over that i think that many americans the record nies the true values for which their forefathers fought from the war of independence on words would see in snowden real hero but that is never going to be reflected in the demographics when the price is so tainted
2:25 pm
disgracefully so silent in simply reporting what he's got to say if there was a dissident in russia or china or the middle east speaking out in the way that snowden is doing it would have massive coverage and want happening now even in the washington post which cover this first story do you think that what snowden has done will achieve anything or has he been in fact a sacrificial lamb for all those people such as we can leak saying yes he's a hero but actually we make any difference at all. the issues that he has spoken to have given us for the first time this is a subject i've been writing about for more than thirty years hard black and white concrete information about the scale of international communications monitoring. i was commissioned by the european parliament to report on this and what now seems
2:26 pm
unequal to go fifteen years ago when we were mostly concerned about monitoring of satellites and the information although strong we argued was patchy was fairly minimal now we have complete information. we have information that the british agency partnering up with the united states is. surveilling in a way that past dictators from stalin to him the whole court could only have dreamed of. while our society is the main subject to a proper rule of law perhaps we have lost the fear that if we do not take notice of what snowden has warned us about and legislate to ensure that these activities are controlled and not lawless in effect as we all know we will have a lot that we are creating for our generation or for the next generation it's very
2:27 pm
interesting to hear your thoughts your perspective on this invest your generous duncan campbell live there from brighton and the u.k. thank you for your time here in r.t. . what a man who was once america's second highest ranking military official is being investigated for allegedly leaking secret information about a u.s. cyber attack it's claimed retired general james cartwright revealed how these talks met virus disrupted iran's nuclear facilities three years ago when he coached khan has the details. in two thousand and ten when the u.s. carried out this cyber attack against iran general cartwright was vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and he was reported to be one of the crucial players in this cyber attack he resigned in two thousand and eleven and he is now apparently being investigated as the niekerk of that story as you remember the meek the obama administration having carried out this cyber attack against iran came before the election last year and the timing raise a lot of questions because president obama all but bragged about that operation as he ran for reelection as you remember everybody kind of assumed that it was one of
2:28 pm
those authorized because the administration seemed formation all the time to further its own goals but the timing of this particular about the general being investigated is also very interesting he hasn't been charged with any crimes and yet again from an unnamed source that he's being investigated and this is happening at a time when the hunt for edward snowden is in full swing is the administration trying to make a point here trying to sort of say that they are targeting even the sources of those leaks that they like it really is not clear at this point not clear whether it's their way of trying to fight the perception that the administration gets all he wants and targets only those whose meek's embarrass the government. response from the u.s. army to the scandal with the british newspaper appearing to become the target since its web site has been to military personnel and have

could you take three. three. three. three. three. three. video for your media project a free media. continues here in the u.s. has restricted access to the guardian website over its revelations of the n.s.a.'s snooping activities the british dailies been breaking the news. on a number of secret documents let's get more details now from sarah. sarah's joining us. be able to learn anything about the n.s.a. secret surveillance when of course the rest of the world will be able to. well i
2:31 pm
mean you just seeing that they have access in their own time to the this type of information you know mobile phones of course and the internet this information is regarding reports in the u.s. media that the u.s. military has since of the missive to them that they have been filtering content regarding government surveillance programs and this came on the back of reports about complaints from a u.s. base in san francisco that the staff there won't take a bill to access any of the u.k. guardian websites and only partial access to the u.s. guardian website now this is of course as you said the newspaper that has been releasing this vast chunks of information from whistleblower edward snowden so of course that is raising a fair bit of concern they say it's seems that this is to do with something called network hygiene now this is preserving their system from any threats externally or internally and i spoke to the energy press office here in the u.k.
2:32 pm
and asked them if anything similar was of course being done with the british military and they told me that this wasn't happening what was being done in the u.s. right now it wasn't happening here although they did say that in relation to their computer systems in the military there is some information that is sometimes restricted for security purposes so still quite hard to get to the bottom of exactly what this network hygiene really entails are actual cyber security experts are going to be giving their a very varied opinions on this in the course of the debate surrounding it but of course it is raising questions about that suppression of information and to talk more about that i'm joined by for this flower list for the six this thanks very much for joining us and i think the first question to our skids these of classified documents that have been released by whistleblower and of course in a very similar way to what we saw with wiki leaks although there's been this.
2:33 pm
relief that's still classified documents say i mean the u.s. military justified in you know preserving the system in this way it's nothing to do with network hygiene it is straight attempt to suppress and to control what is being read and understood by in this case the soldiers the other side of the coin is the american government and the british government are looking at all the internet or the mobile appliances or the landline telephones of you me american citizens british citizens and every single person watching this program so it's a little side ridiculous side because those soldiers could actually get hold of that information or they have made all things computer access health problem a tour but it's part of an overall increasing encroachment on free speech and access to information. at this moment the american government is trying to shut down all the iranian outlets simply because of the content of the outlet so i think
2:34 pm
it's quite important to point out that is at this point the department of defense actually said in their response that they're not going to block web sites from the american public in general and that would violate they said the hired help principle of upholding in defending the constitution thing made it clear this is just not in the u.s. this they are lying when they talk about democracy they are places castro in the head choppers when they talk about free speech they are shutting down as many things as they do you have no reason to believe one single thing that the american government says it is in the early stages of a sort of ninety george orwell in one thousand nine hundred for a fascist state so do not accept anything coming from the usa gov is quite tough and i mean that's the sort of official response they say to something he got to take it you know face value that they found that i don't a should take it and none of your viewers should have to take it and no one hussein will have to take it i think you know that you're in. are taught to us they are aggressors they are anti
2:35 pm
democrat they are now trying to control everybody's lives we have no reason to brain work they say bring it back to the privacy issue here in the suppression of information the us government has said this is part of the sort of security network but of course this is happening now in the u.s. the u.k. military said ben not doing anything similar but the story will tighten doesn't it because it's raised this huge debate around us u.k. intelligence gathering techniques and of course there's that is raising a lot of concern about this sort of i think now that the website has being to some extent limited in the u.s. that the debates now going to turn around on the people releasing the information rather than focusing on the leaks itself well yes that the techniques are the prism and the and several other programs which have been there actually for at least ten years some of them have and all this happens respect of edward snowden is that the existence of these programs are now being brought to the surface but what you want to look at the attacks taking place on
2:36 pm
a they are going at him but even more on the journalists who talked to him so you see it's an attack they're going pretty speaks the bottom line of all this to control the information and they normally do it by omission in the american channels not so much they lie they just don't tell the truth and now though we have them panicking it is all to the snowden leaks about prism and they're now trying to go for the germans i mean your life. thank you very much for joining us with a shake there at the guardian newspaper in the u.k. haven't yet got back to us about the blocking of the website on the u.s. website this certainly will keep you updated as the twists and turns that rounding this debate around u.k. u.s. intelligence gathering continue so thanks very much indeed for that that's not the center for live in london with rodney shakespeare from the global justice movement well don't forget our website for plenty more stories in. clude.

a did syrian soldier all of this highlights the brutality of the syrian opposition and the extremist elements inside it it comes off to meetings of the friends of syria in which the united states pledged support to say and weapons to the opposition the u.k. and france indicating that they will model over this or indicating they support for such measures all of this is a very warring somare and that is why countries like russia have indicated their outrage of weapons being sent to syria saying that it only perpetuates the conflict and benefits at the hands of extremist elements there. the u.s. president may be enjoying a warm welcome from officials on his african toll but there's been more criticism the open arms from locals trade unions and civil society activists were rallying outside parliament in cape town ahead of the u.s. president's arrival demonstrators came out to blast
