dozens of detainees being forced fresh claims of sexual abuse by guards at guantanamo bay that's where a strike is nearing the end of its fifth month. bolivia's president gathers latin american leaders to condemn what he calls u.s. intimidation tactics threatening to close america's embassy. refused access to european airspace. and parts of egypt explode in jubilation after the ousting of mohamed morsy some of the deposed president's top aides are arrested however fears of clashes between the army and.

it is just after eight am on friday here in moscow this is r.t. worldwide news with me rory sushi it's good to have you with us today. the u.s. government is fighting a legal effort to stop the force feeding of hunger striking detainees at guantanamo bay lawyers for several prisoners of appeal to a washington court to intervene but the administration says federal judges have no say on what happens at the camp now the hunger strike at the notorious u.s. military facility is nearing the end of its fifth month now nearly two thirds of the inmate have now joined in the protest against alleged mistreatment and detention without trial now military doctors are force feeding forty five of them to try and keep them alive the highly controversial practice has been condemned around the world but is still being defended by u.s. officials. now reports. the u.n. calls to the u.s.
12:02 am
to stop force feeding guantanamo hunger strikers the practice is against international law and is seen by many as a form of torture and here is one thing first the guards strap the detainee down to a chair like this one then they put a mask over his face so that the detainee can't move bite or spit then the nurse snakes the feeding tube into nasal cavity the feeding tube which is roughly the size of a pens in cartridge or this or this is not an actual feeding tube but it gives you an idea and this area is very rich in nerve endings and patients report extreme pain during the procedure and the nurse pushes the troop further down the throat creating a tightness that makes breathing difficult at that point patients typically feel pressure on their chest along some say it feels like they were drowning then the staff taped the troop to the detainees nose so that they can bite or swallow it and then two cans of nutritional substances are being funneled
12:03 am
through the tube now we rode to guantanamo and asked whether they use an anesthetic for this seemingly painful procedure here's the response typically not however it is very low ball if the detainees were quite sick most attendees prefer to use that not all the world to lubricate the two. you west of us are trying to make it sound like it's not as bad but here's how one of the detainees a yemeni man somewhere in r.g. all house on the bell describes what force feeding actually feels like i will never forget the first time they passed a feeding tube up my nose i can't describe how painful it is to be force fed this way as it was thrust it made me feel like throwing up i wanted to vomit but i couldn't there was getting in my chest throat and stomach i had never experienced such pain before i would not wish this cruel punishment upon anyone we also asked the kuantan officials how many detainees resist the procedure and how many give their consent to it and he won't be. saying the majority of the day's headlines
12:04 am
were poor compliantly and do not resist detainees are given a choice to eat a hot meal drink the liquid near trained or be entrails fit all the detainees see the choice differently take a listen to. when they come to force me into the chair if i refuse to be tied up they call the team so i have no choice either i can exercise my right to protest my detention and be beaten up or i can submit to pay in full force feeding for most people these detainees are out of sight out of mind as sudden as it is they say physical suffering is the only way for the world to draw the world's attention to their plight we can't hear their voices but here's what they write i'm doing this because i want to know my destiny i cannot abide not knowing anymore i just hope that because of the pain we are suffering the eyes of the world will once again look to guantanamo before it is too indefinite detention is the worst form of torture respect us or kill us it's your choice the u.s.
12:05 am
must take off its mask and kill us the obama administration doesn't want one hundred inmates to die but neither is it in a rush to give the detainees their lives back in washington i'm going to check on. the way that medical personnel treat the detainees virtually amounts to malpractise that's the view of dr frank on the. the regime which the joint task force for guantanamo has written for the cleveland of these people requires truly abusive care and also is it involves the use of medicines which are dangerous and these people are not getting any information or entitle to about the risks of their running or the risks of the care so-called that they are receiving they are not allowed to behave like doctors and are compelled by the military hierarchy to behave like jailers in particular several of them have commented to me
12:06 am
through their lawyers that when they are asked to doctors for example to stop the environmental manipulation which leaves them freezing. or we kill them for various disturbances the doctor says they have no power to do anything and as one of them one of the hunger strikers what is the point of a doctor like lacked one of the detainees in the meantime has written a letter to his lawyer claiming he and other inmates are being sexually assaulted by guards at this during full body bodily cavity searches every time they leave and enter their cells from a get most guarded terry holbrook says some facility staff have been mistreating the muslim detainees at the end of the day just to get revenge for nine eleven. could be thrown in the toilet or thrown on the ground or mistreated in some other form cetera that happened often and aggressive searches of detainees person that
12:07 am
happened this well if there are motivation behind it i would say that somewhere in the british occasion of the american society we led the soldiers to believe. in abusing detainees it's going to somehow even the score for nine eleven there are soldiers in the army in the navy air force marines and cetera who think that if they kill an arab they mistreat a muslim if they abuse a detainee it's going to somehow balance the score for nine eleven and it really difficult to step back and realize nothing is going to bring those people back to life so why are you going to abuse this person this first set up in to do with nine eleven and do with nine eleven died on nine eleven. but unfortunately not everybody sees the world that and amid mounting public and legal pressure barack obama has appointed a new envoy in charge of closing guantanamo bay cliff it's slow and has already to
12:08 am
a person but made no detailed statements on how and when he intends to shut it down meanwhile barack obama is coming to fresh fire for not using his own north already to end the notorious history of gift as aussies are going to go now reports now as president i have tried to close gitmo i transferred sixty seven detainees to other countries before congress imposed restrictions to effectively prevent us from either transferring detainees to other countries or imprisoning them here in the united states. these restrictions make no sense this statement coming from the person many referred to as the most powerful man in the world may sound sincerely frustrated but many believe it has little honesty to it president obama has been blogging obvious he's been claiming that he can do anything but it simply not true he's operating a droll assassination program claiming he has the power to do that is present the united states and yet somehow he's claiming that he doesn't have the power to close

down a military prison and he's the commander in chief of the united states armed forces it's not a bit strange they fishel and most often cited reason for not releasing prisoners even the eighty six cleared of all charges they have no place to go especially the so-called indefinite detainees terror suspects considered too dangerous to read go but impossible to try in either civil or military court largely because the evidence supporting claims of their terror activity has allegedly been received through torture and interrogation which cannot be used as evidence in court the very existence of these men was shrouded in secrecy with the u.s. officially revealing their identities only several weeks back after they'd been entertainment for years another sign the u.s. isn't really considering shutting down the prison is the amount of money poured into good loam the jail is a record setter dubbed by some as the most expensive jail in history annual cost of the base operation runs at just over one hundred fifty million dollars it means
12:10 am
nine hundred thousand dollars per prisoner every year eighteen times the average yearly income of an average american household the latest innovation of the base of fiber optic cable to connected to the u.s. mainland for the sake of better internet service for military personnel stationed on cuba will set the taxpayers back another forty million should the congress approve it hardly sounds like a necessity if the prison was to be shut down then again there are still those who believe being held in guantanamo is tantamount to staying at a luxury resort in tropical paradise one of those is the house speaker john boehner the mint opponent of get most closer. i don't know that there's a terrorist treated better anywhere in the world than what's happened one time and we've spent hundreds of millions of dollars to build a facility that has more comforts than a lot of americans get but those who know what gizmo is like there to differ well
12:11 am
maybe they should go and try and you know they think it's such a fantastic place they should try twelve years of indefinite detention and see how much they enjoy it and perhaps force feeding and confinement i mean we know that prison conditions in the united states which has the largest prison population in the whole world far from ideal we see the force feeding going on at guantanamo bay the solitary confinement the the invasive physical searches of prisoners we have these journalists you have various other people who are allowed to visit guantanamo bay but they never meet the prisoners they never see the actual conditions that these people are being held and what the prisoners say about why she happens there's probably a lot more accurate since they've been subject to this but this wife claims that guantanamo is just sort of a vacation camp perhaps of its exotic location it remains one of the world's most notorious prisons where people are held without trial for years and the conditions are such that inmates choose to go without food for five months rather than accept the conditions they're being held in in cuba r.t.
12:12 am
. only be close to if obama feels pressured enough to take direct action that's the view of attorney and political activist kevin seems. there certainly should be an investigation the independent as a geisha in prison is an embarrassment it's a human rights ongoing human rights violation and until it's changed we keep the spotlight on it and we hope that the lawyers working police prisoners and the prisoners themselves will find ways to get the truth out so the american people in the world know that prison is the closed the reality is every day that obama does not these people are being tortured eighty six of them had been cleared for release by the department defense by the department of justice for the white house for more than a year they've been cleared for release and yet no action taken president obama is not leading here is not getting the job done and everybody that he's the blame for every day and he's going to torture there are things that he can do and so i think our job as americans to hold him accountable nothing's going to happen unless he

has pressure. to get the chance i do stay with us he threw out friday for our special coverage of the mass hunger strike at guantanamo bay which has reached its one hundred fifty day mock. this is not a surprise to me that we've got problems and one time during a time of budget cuts we spend one hundred fifty million dollars each year to imprison one hundred sixty six people get more it's become a symbol around the world for an america that the rule of law. it's good to have you with us here on r t today i'm wrong. a latin america has put on a joint show of outrage over what they call the political terrorism by washington leaders met after a number of e.u. countries refused the president of bolivia as jet access to their airspace it was forced to land in austria and searched amid rumors that the u.s. whistleblower edward snowden may well have been on board a latin american leaders echoed president evo morales anger while meeting in

bolivia is what some of them had to say at the argentinean president suggested it's all the plane was diverted by those who usually talk about holding human rights while the president of venezuela declared it is a violation against the entire continent ecuador's leader said the u.s. wants to take away the other nation's civil rights or even more allies himself stressed that an apology is not enough for what has happened. but you know we will clearly examine it and if it's necessary we will close the u.s. embassy in bolivia we do not need the american embassy we don't need their cooperation or diplomatic relations with them while they conspire against us from within our country and from the outside my hand won't shake to close the u.s. embassy we've got dignity we've got sovereignty without the us we're better politically and democratically without the i.m.f.

over its surveillance program to then suddenly complying with washington it's quite astonishing to me to see how the leaders in europe germany and france and several other countries spoke out angrily at finding out that they were being spied on that their embassies were being spied on in washington that the e.u. off system cells in europe were being spied on and then all of a sudden neatly they all flat out said first of all they would not grant asylum to snowden who led them to know all that and then they keep in on this flight that they thought was carrying snowden i think what was happening was the u.s. probably told them about a plane that had snowden on it didn't bother to tell them that it was a presidential flight it was an atrocious violation of diplomatic immunity to go after a presidential airplane and the truth is that president morales had every right to carry snowden if he wanted to know that would not be been grounds to have brought

brotherhood members and amongst those who have been arrested on the road with the aid of the muslim brotherhood and the time and supreme guide and his deputy we understand that many probably ended up in a tavern up being detained the general prosecuted ordered these are it is interestingly enough to have the traffic by president morsi after the revolution back in two thousand and eleven he was part of mubarak's team now only on thursday and interim president was sworn in at lehman so if he is the head of the country's constitutional court it's just a position that he had only two days and in that swearing in ceremony he said that he was going to pay homage to the chance to have it to patch up the constitution and the bill in terms of who will be the new prime minister of this interim government it does seem as if i have it up i would it is the favorite and it changes the form ahead of at a mash up into to indicate that it is

a position that is willing to take refuge in nothing which there is as well as me that there are critics who do say that if indeed people try to make time minister of the end that the puppet for the you. night it stays but tell us where it is when we have to put to what is going on in the west of egypt game this is a very very divided society and there are real concerns that they could be clashes and violence between the army and promo system one of the muslim brotherhood leaders have issued a statement saying that they are hunting for nonviolence they don't want any kind of armed struggle but they we're hearing statements from the grassroots muslim brotherhood supporters not wanting a jihad or holy war and the question is whether or not and leadership will be able to control and go and the frustration on the streets of the army is talking about implementing a road map it has dissolved the parliament it has abandoned the constitution it's going to be really have only presidential the parliamentary elections so there is some kind of time frame have some kind of system that has been put in place but

there is again a real fear a fear of clashes if they were clashes have to find a higher university there were also clashes not far from have higher office and this is something that people will be watching. and in the meantime a ship's foreign minister has assured the u.s. secretary of state john kerry that the overthrow of mohamed morsi was not a military coup but rather the will of the people at war correspondent and columnist eric margolies seat belts that saying the ousting of a legitimate leader has a little to do with democratic principles. it is nothing to do with democracy we have seen a legitimately elected critic of overthrow. it is i think shameful that the western leaders are pussyfooting around we call it a coup. and it is not this is an old fashioned military coup.

a government that's supposed to uphold the constitution even though they say that there's laws that make everything they do legal it seems like legal gymnastics to me i voted for obama twice i donated twice but i'm tired of the expansion of these programs that seem to violate our rights and focus more on keeping us safe in the name of fear everley frighten me that the director of national intelligence lied to congress and i haven't really been any repercussions he issued a written apology but people have lost their jobs over last and it seems like he really needs to resign we are living in the midst of the of the largest. you know on unreasonable search and seizure system we've ever seen in the history of mankind is completely suspicion less search and seizure of our information and that people should be infuriated that this. crowd has marched more than the law matters down then it was here at federal hall where the first congress passed the bill of rights in addition to this event more than five hundred thousand people have signed an
