freedom of speech and now the freedom to question. breaking news on the bloodshed in egypt these three people killed in several injured as the army cracks down on backers of the alstad president mohamed morsi. five months of desperation in guantanamo bay the hunger strike drags on with prisoners failing to win changes to their plight as jail stop press on with force feeding. itself american leaders unite in support and condemnation lashing out at european countries for granting the libyan leader plane with president morales is claiming the u.s. pressured them to do so.
1:01 pm
international news and comment online on screen twenty four hours a day this is. at least three people are said to been killed and dozens injured as troops in egypt opened fire at mohamed morsy backers the military has denied shooting live rounds saying it only used rubber bullets and tear gas on his middle east correspondent paula is in the egyptian capital following the escalating situation peacefully three people have been killed in several times and injured in the latest round of matches between the pro morsy supporters and the military confrontation took place as a group of demonstrators pushed their way forward to the headquarters of the republican guard building now going to eyewitnesses one of those killed managed to put up a poster i'll be deposed president on the bottom why is the ground in this building when he was shot to the head it is believed that president morsy and some fifty five members of his house the parliament are coming to inside the headquarter building be on me however has denied using live ammunition it says it has only used
1:02 pm
the lank rounds and tear gas to. interior ministry also saying that they would no deaths reported in front of this building all of this is happening on a friday of rejection there are mass demonstrations happening across egypt the muslim brotherhood and other islamic speech have called for their supporters to take to the streets to express their anger against the ousting of the full matrix imprisoned elfie here in cairo there are thousands of protesters gathering in nashville city the military also continues to round up the muslim brotherhood leadership there are a risk warrants for some three hundred top islamist figures we know that dozens of them have already been arrested and that many of them are in hiding fearing that the hunt for them is on this city is a sense of deja vu i mean it was only two years ago that hosni mubarak was ousted from power and now this week we see the same happening with his successor the point
1:03 pm
of a nice to be made that mohamed morsi was elected by democracy that is the point he continues to make the point that its forces continue to shout and they say that the only way to get rid of a democratically elected president is at the ballot box and also make the point that he's only been in powerful one year and that he inherited a a system that was internally corrupt any needs to be given a full term of office to deal with as the entire country is in a state of high alert the police had frightened their presence particularly in north and south sinai and in the suez earlier this morning there was an attack on an airport there egypt has also closed its border with gaza for fearing for certifies and further attacks from there so we're talking about a country that is not only facing internal division that is not anything internal protests but is also just great from its borders. that five months and counting that's how long the inmates at the guantanamo bay prison have
1:04 pm
been refusing food to protest what they call in humane treatment despite international outrage over the situation the hunger strike is showing no signs of ending today we're taking a closer look at why. so nearly two thirds of the inmates have now joined the protest against their indefinite detention without trial forty five of those prisoners are being strapped to a chair and having nutrients forced down their nose twice a day the government says the procedure is done in the most humane way possible and it's trying to prevent death by using it or he's going to come look at how the controversial practice is actually carried out and what the prisoners say about it . the u. one cost to the u.s. to stop force feeding guantanamo hunger strikers the practice is against international law and is seen by many as a form of torture and here is one thing first the guards strap the detainee down to
1:05 pm
a chair like this one then they put a mask over his face so that the detainee can't move bite or spit then the nurse snakes the feeding tube into nasal cavity the feeding tube which is roughly the size of a pens in cartridge or this or this is not an actual feeding tube but it gives you an idea and this area is very rich in nerve endings and patients report extreme pain during the procedure and the nurse pushes the troop further down the throat creating a tightness that makes breathing difficult at that point patients typically feel pressure on their chest along some say it feels like they were drowning then the staff taped the troop to the detainees nose so that they can bite or swallow it and then two cans of nutritional substances are being funneled through the tube now we wrote to guantanamo and asked whether they use an anesthetic for this seemingly painful procedure here's the response typically not
1:06 pm
however it is available if the detainees request that most detainees prefer to use standard all of oral to lubricate the two of us of us are trying to make it sound like it's not as bad but here is how one of the detainees a yemeni man somewhere in our g. all house on the bell describes what force feeding actually feels like i will never forget the first time they passed a feeding tube up my nose i can't describe how painful it is to be force fed this way as it was thrust it made me feel like throwing up i want to devolve it but i couldn't there was going to be my church throat and stomach i had never experienced such pain before i would not wish this cruel punishment upon anyone we also asked the kuantan officials how many detainees resist the procedure and how many give their consent to it and he won't buy. saying the majority of the detainees report compliantly and do not resist detainees are given a choice to eat a hot meal drink the liquid new trend or be enthralled fed taney see the choice
1:07 pm
differently take a listen to. when they come to force me into the chair if i refuse to be tied up they call the team so i have no choice either i can exercise my right to protest my detention and be beaten up or i can submit to pay in full force feeding for most people these detainees are out of sight out of mind as sudden as it is they see physical suffering as the only way to draw the world's attention to their plight we can't hear their voices but here's what they write i'm doing this because i want to know my destiny i cannot abide not knowing anymore i just hope that because of the paid we are suffering the eyes of the world will once again look to guantanamo before it is too indefinite detention is the worst form of torture respect us or kill us but your choice the u.s. must take off its mask and kill us the obama administration doesn't want inmates to die but neither is it in
1:08 pm
a rush to give the detainees their lives back in washington i'm going to check out around one hundred forty people from the u.s. navy's medical personnel performing these procedures and dr frankel and old he believes these medics are being negligent and abusive towards the detainees only because they are following orders from the military. the regime which the joint task force for guantanamo has written for the cleveland of these people requires truly abusive care and also is involves the use of medicines which are dangerous they are not allowed to behave like doctors and are compelled by the military hierarchy to behave like jailers in particular several of them have commented to me through their lawyers that when they ask the doctors for example to stop the environmental manipulation which leaves them freezing not each or waking them at night for various disturbances the doctor says
1:09 pm
they have no power to do anything and as one of them's one of the hunger strikers what is the point of a doctor like fact eight guantanamo detainees are represented by committee i.i. she is an attorney at the u.s. based center for constitutional rights and she says keeping the prisoners at the facility has nothing to do with a threat to security. well i think that broad brush way of talking about who remains is exactly the problem of one hundred sixty six people who remain be obama administration has said that eighty six of them do not need to be there and in fact do not present that kind of security threat that would require them to be i want to know what it means to be clear it is that every government agency in the united states with a stake in these detentions has unanimously decided that these people can leave the
1:10 pm
prison that includes intelligence the defense department the department of justice the department of state everyone so it is it's inaccurate to say that you know these are terror suspects and therefore they present a threat. you know they're released and in fact the united states called everyone at one time at one point you know under the bush administration all dangerous terrorists the bush administration itself released hundreds of people those people are living their lives without incident they've been resettled in countries in europe they've been sent home and the issue right now is really a political one it is not about a security threat. well the united states is running up quite a bill by keeping open to one hundred fifty million dollars per year that is how much the pentagon is spending on the facility now that's roughly a million per prisoner not compare that so the costs of regular in the eight howls
1:11 pm
within the u.s. you're seeing this well put out into the perspective the average american citizen is nearly eighteen times less than what the government pays for each guantanamo prisoner but. now reports president obama still seems reluctant to use his authority to end the chems existence. as president i have tried to close gitmo i transferred sixty seven detainees to other countries before congress imposed restrictions to effectively prevent us from either transferring detainees to other countries or imprisoning them here in the united states this statement coming from the person many referred to as the most powerful man in the world may sound sincerely frustrated but many believe it has little honesty to it president obama has been blogging on this he's been claiming that he can't do anything and that's simply not true he's operating a droll assassination program claiming he has the power to do that is present the united states and yet somehow he's claiming that he doesn't have the power to close
1:12 pm
down a military prison and he's the commander in chief of the united states armed forces is not a bit strange the official and most often cited reason for not releasing prisoners even the eighty six cleared of all charges they have no place to go especially the so-called indefinite detainees terror suspects considered too dangerous to read go but impossible to try in either civil or military court largely because the evidence supporting claims of their terror activity has allegedly been received through torture and interrogation which cannot be used as evidence in court the very existence of these men was shrouded in secrecy with the u.s. officially revealing their identities only several weeks back after they'd been entertainment for years there are still those who believe being held in guantanamo is tantamount to staying at a luxury resort in tropical paradise i don't know that there's a terrorist treated better anywhere in the world than what's happened at one time
1:13 pm
we've spent hundreds of millions of dollars to build a facility that has more comforts than a lot of americans get but this white claims that guantanamo is just sort of a vacation kept perhaps of its exotic location it remains one of the world's most notorious prisons where people are held without trial for years and the conditions are such that inmates choose to go without food for five months rather than accept the conditions they're being held in in cuba r t. earlier i spoke to tony camerino he served in the u.s. air force for nearly two decades and conducted more than a thousand interrogations he says the detainees are main recruitment targets i still work in the middle east and i still hear time in and time out from people there on the street that going tom obey represents the idea that america is at war against muslims it's not at war against criminals who commit terrorist acts and we
1:14 pm
cannot erase what's happened at the time of day in the past regardless of how well you know how hard we try going to obey as i learned in iraq when we debriefed foreign fighters was this number one recruitment tool along with abu ghraib and it will continue to be so long as it is open and especially in light of the fact that eighty six of one hundred sixty six detainees have been cleared of any wrongdoing and cleared for release this is you know the indefinite detention of anniston people is a great selling point for al qaeda to recruit new fighters that america is not the country that it says it is will do stay with us here in our team because we'll be covering all things going to move throughout the day and we'll be talking to former prisoners the as an ex military personnel about the situation at the facility. it is not a surprise to me that we. during a time of budget cuts we spend one hundred and fifty million dollars each year to imprison one hundred sixty six people become

a symbol all around the world for an america that the rule of law. more stories ahead for you this hour including outrage in south america triggered by the grounding of the bolivian presidential plane with president saying he's ready to close the u.s. embassy in his country blaming washington for pressuring europe to block his jet. coming off in the spring. when the greats spade blind to what is happening in their country. the american dream is disappearing. the houses with gardens are. the poor are left hopeless the streets are full of angry crowns fighting against. the stole the american dream.

in egypt the military accused of shooting protesters with three people said to be killed meanwhile the army is tonight shooting live rounds saying it only used rubber bullets and tear gas well these are live pictures coming from the center of karo at the moment and let's get now more reaction analysis on what's happening there in the country from correspondent jonathan steele and he reports extensively on the middle east and we just heard that the head of the muslim brotherhood has vowed to continue to protest and till morsi is put back into power but that's pretty unlikely now isn't it it's pretty unlikely but what the military is doing is also disastrous because by rounding up the muslim brotherhood leaders they're undermining any chance of a real compromise dialogue to end this crisis they talk about they want national reconciliation well how can you have reconciliation if you lock up a president who is elected freely by an enormous number of egyptians what they need to do now is to have a round table talks and get the opposition leaders the secular opposition who
1:18 pm
refused before to talk to morsi to sit around the table with him and try and hammer out some program of early i'll eventually actually particularly new constitution and leave the presidential issue for the time being and that's not happening at the moment instead we are seeing some blood shed there on the streets and car in effect is history repeating itself. well it is because if the most you people see that the opponents sort of one as it were got their way and got the army to react by coming out into the street in massive numbers then and of not muslim brotherhood people will say well i will we'll follow the same policy and we'll get our people out into the streets in massive numbers and you know we can play this game just as well as you can but of course washington supported the revolution a couple of years ago and of course supports the army now is washington pleased that what's happening at the moment we haven't heard a great deal now i think though rather embarrassed i don't quite know which way to
1:19 pm
go because obviously it is a military coup you can't get around that it's hard for the u.s. to come out publicly in support of a military coup so they have to make these noises ritual noises about concern and to return to civilian rule but they're not really. sure what what to do so i think the best solution as i mentioned is some sort of compromise i wish we would hear that from some of these western leaders don't think we could see a compromise in a transitional process because after all the military saying look we have taken control and we promise fresh elections as soon as possible isn't that a democratic process taking place now. well i think they have to make clear that morsi can be a candidate or the muslim brotherhood can have another candidate and not exclude it the way they're rounding up. muslim brotherhood people and there are these reports that they've got a list of three hundred it's not quite clear how many of those have actually been arrested but you know that that is unacceptable they have to say that if there are
1:20 pm
new presidential elections then the muslim brotherhoods entitle to run with a candidate to campaign freely like anybody else what about the reaction beyond egypt implications in the region after all that the turkish prime minister he's now said the west has failed the test for sincerity by not calling the event in egypt a military coup why is saying that well turkey is very worried because you know they were big allies of morsi and. a k p party that runs turkey is very similar to the. muslim brotherhood kind of moderate islamists and so it's bad for them to see morsi fall and it's the same is for qatar just very concerned that. saudi arabia united arab emirates the opposite that they're very worried about the muslim brotherhood in their own country and in the u.a.e. for example is locked up quite a lot of people who are muslim sympathizers or organizers so there is
1:21 pm
a scene quite happy because they saw the muslim brotherhood as a threat to their particular. menarche you know and of course what's happening now though could be seen that the islamic movement in some of these arab spring countries is being undermined for example tunisia where we see and we're already hearing of some protests there so is this fundamentally a quote a blow to the islamic influence that we have seen in the arab spring of late. well i think the islamists are very strong and i think this is your god that they will now some people will now move on to and the tunisian opposition will take heart from what's happened in cairo and perhaps come out in the streets in large not on this thinking they can do the same thing after all to his year was the first country that had one of these revolutions in the circle the arab spring that brought islam is. it's too early to say the islamists have failed it's just that the opposition is refusing to accept the results of elections and i think they can
1:22 pm
get their way by street protests wasn't waiting for the normal electoral cycle to come up in fear four years time when there should be a normal round of elections and just in a word could there be civil war in egypt just very briefly some people say is it that dangerous now the situation just briefly place no i don't think it's a civil war i just don't think people are. sufficiently to challenge into civil law or anything like the scale of syria for example now and there could be clashes they could be people being beaten up in the street and and lynch mobs and that kind of thing in the army could start shooting people as they seem to have done already today. but to get to move so quickly to civil war is unlikely it would it would take much much longer purposes for that to happen i think correspondent jonathan steele thank you very much indeed for your thoughts life in arctic really good to talk to you thank you. latin american leaders have been infuriated by the recent

grounding of the bolivian presidential plane condemning it as a slap in the face for the region they've been rallying in support of their colleague ever when ali's whose plame was rerouted over suspicions the n.s.a. leaker edward snowden was on board they are now demanding an apology from france italy portugal and spain while due to condemn their actions as political terrorism to the international right of asylum a harsh comment from venezuela here the u.s. elite rules europe and the president of argentina said it was curious that more of his plane was grounded by those who used to talk about protecting international rights while the ecuadorian president has said it felt as though they are being treated like a colony and the bolivian president himself said he's even ready to shut down the american embassy in his country. but. we will clearly examine and if it's necessary we will close the u.s. embassy in bolivia we do not need the american embassy we don't need their

cooperation or diplomatic relations with them while they conspire against us from within our country and from the outside my hand won't shake to close the u.s. embassy we've got dignity we've got sovereignty with the us we're better politically and democratically with the i.m.f. and world bank we're better economically so we do not need them spain says it and other countries were told snowden was on board the plane but it's refused to say where that information came from despite south american leaders claiming washington's hand was behind the diversion the u.s. has remained quiet policy and development specialist paolo refined and he says that the u.s. has built a global power system where sovereignty is in question. these rules of international law have been told to be. shaken. by would say since one thousand nine hundred nine on to a level that even among the western powers knol there is

a situation where someone is more equal than on this and the possibility of a sovereign state to adopt a decision city guarding a side or protection of a certain individual. completely puts aside. to favor the major interests of the center of the imperial system which is washington in this case the grounding in a plane in europe comes hot on the heels of revelations about the vast snooping activities of the us which targeted in new officials and citizens and moved by europe's authorities therefore has certainly raised eyebrows according to investigative reporter dave lindorff it's quite astonishing to me to see how the leaders in europe germany and france and several other countries spoke out angrily at finding out that they were being spied on that their embassies were being spied on in washington that the e.u. off system selves in europe were being spied on and then all of
1:26 pm
a sudden they all flat out said first of all they would not grant asylum to snowden who led them to know all that and then they keep in on this flight that they thought was carrying snowden i think what was happening was the u.s. probably told them about a plane that had snowden on it and didn't bother to tell them that it was a presidential flight. now there's more news making the headlines across the world in our world update the serious suicide bombing has rocked the only sunni town in iraq killing at least from the people an attacker in uniform detonated his car packed with explosives just before midday prayers this follows a wave of bombings across the country and choose day which claimed fifty six lives in one day alone according to u.n. statistics more than seven hundred people were killed last month in iraq as the country goes through a spiral of sectarian violence. the central has been hit by some of the heaviest bombing since the beginning of the syrian conflict the artillery and air strikes are now into the sixth day the syrian army medic fansub

much of the world well your chances of fitting into that bathing suit are ironically slim but that's just my opinion. spice or skin us in this. case the u.s. in its files on just about everyone in the world including its so-called friends and allies. total information dominance and this is being done we're told just like care would need to be better if the u.s. monitored its intelligence community rather than snoop on the rest of us an infinite number of people coming who are taking jobs that pay over one hundred thousand a year you know they're going to pay taxes we create lots of other jobs around those people in my view is that the country should welcome as many of those people as we can get and what the corporations. shortage over.
