10:00 am
and you were. breaking news here and i'll see this song over three weeks after touching down in moscow n.s.a. whistleblower edward snowden finally submit a request for temporary asylum here in russia. also on the program seven people are killed and over two hundred eight hundred during the latest violence overnight in egypt as backers of the ousted president morsi clashed with police. and he denies claims that israel used one of its military bases to launch a strike on syria a report based on and off he saw its. new song rush on the wrong the wall this is all see with me here. and our welcome to
10:01 am
the program. cia leaker edward snowden has officially requests a temporary asylum in russia the whistleblower has been stranded in a moscow airport for three weeks now and let's get all the details live from far andrea hi there so can you sir what can you say about edward snowden status right now well it does appear that his three week ordeal in the transit area of moscow sheremetyevo airport will soon come to an end and that is because the russian migration service has said it has now received an official application from him for temporary asylum in russia and although that will take three months to process in the meantime we think within probably five days he will be issued documents which will allow him to leave that transit area to pass through passport control and effectively walk on russian soil a free man we do know a couple of things about his application firstly
10:02 am
a lawyer that has been consulting with him has said that on that application mr snowden has made it very clear that he feels that he would be tortured if he returned to the u.s. we also know that mr snowden has agreed russia's precondition of giving him asylum and that was that he should no longer damage the u.s. army if he is granted asylum he would no longer issue these documents these leaks which could damage the u.s. government so that's what we understand at the moment we also know that this is probably part of a much wider plan for edward snowden even though if he was graham asylum he would be allowed to live and work. the one year he has said in a press conference on friday that his wider plan is to travel to latin america where he has been granted asylum in principle by three countries those being venezuela nicaragua and bolivia in the meantime president putin has said that
10:03 am
russia should not be blamed for this ongoing saga and said if anything is being compounded by america's actions. should. we didn't invite edward snowden and russia wasn't his final destination anyway he was in transit but as soon as he began his journey is route was revealed and our u.s. partners effectively blocked him to taking any flights even made other countries afraid of taking him in no one wants to he ended up blocked on our territory and you say it's fair to say this story is far from coming to an end at the moment but today's news that he has officially applied for temporary asylum in russia is one small step towards that and in effect that he will now be able to leave we understand the transit area of moscow sheremetyevo airport within five days that
10:04 am
after being stuck there for over three weeks. he's and your family live from central moscow andrea thank you very much indeed for that. and out for more on mr snowden's asylum let's now talk to r.t. contributor action time is it mr townsend great to see that r.c. as always now that's not as likely to stay here in russia for some time how will it affect moscow's relations with washington. there's already been some speculation about the upcoming g twenty summit but of course let me put it was very careful to say well if he doesn't offend the americans by his leaks as regards mr snowden i'm going to say given the polling done in the united states the american people seem to think edward snowden has done the americans a favor no president obama sees it at all so whether it'll come up in discussions i'm not sure the way president obama goes about extraordinary rendition drone strikes and so on it's not really done on
10:05 am
a diplomatic level it's all done through subterfuge and i'll be in a galaxy rather than at the summit table in more school or in st petersburg where the g. twenty is happening mr snowden obviously says he wants safe passage to lots in america is it possible for him to stay in russia prominent. i think that's up to edward snowden in all of this was the reaction of john kerry state department along department of justice in the united states to revoke a u.s. citizens passport i mean it's childish frankly snowden is this whistle blowing scene is this great whistleblower showing the american people that they live in a surveillance state and his passport is immediately taken it is up to edward snowden and as we have heard the recent reports that are coming out of that he's applying for temporary asylum presumably so he can just go about his business as a normal citizen walk into the venezuelan embassy in moscow walk into the
10:06 am
ecuadorian embassy and fill out forms and papers the obama administration was so quick to just say right we'll spank him a non-citizen causing trouble in this way well they didn't just call them and so dribble because most trouble because all sorts of governments trouble notably the bolivian one where of course the hijacking drama took place a few weeks ago. and why it happened any old the e.u. countries who thought they were targets of an essay snooping snowden assigned them . it continues to be the case that european union capitals. some of them i have to say are finally saying washington put the pressure on them to bring down in effect a jet hold carrying a head of state nothing from london over here where of course duty and wiki leaks is oppose giving help to mr snowden he's languishes here in the ecuadorian embassy the government make misstatements and once more worrying is that the propaganda
10:07 am
will start to filter out in european newspapers in journals as it is in america about somehow this man keith alexander the head of the national security agency and what a heroic figure he is as regards the nato operations in afghanistan and iraq which is the real basis of the snowden allegations of how some of this and they say spying help saves lives and doesn't actually destroy them. don't you feel the questions of the snowden's state is distracting the public from his revelations. precisely and that's why it was interesting that the washington post did start talking about how the n.s.a. doing their own propaganda efforts leaking selectively to their favorite members of the press not matthew levy a courageous a.p. man who always grills the state department of their press conferences you know the washington post had this piece saying that while snowden talks about a full veil and state in effect what the n.s.a. managed to do is to stop. on the roadside bombs in iraq and perhaps in afghanistan
10:08 am
and we know that in the case of iraq it was american taxpayer money bribing laughing groups that despise america and that's how it calmed down in the sunni triangle in iraq although it's of course flaring up again they're going to make lots of allegations in the press and you'll see them in lots of right wing newspapers that the national security agency is a beacon of freedom and without their ability to surveil your skype account your outlook dot com account and recent revelations about microsoft the forces stationed in iraq and afghanistan would have sustained far more casualties what rubbish we know the american government in the corporate surveillance state is desperately seeking around to prove that they need to be able to be through all of our e-mails all of our phone calls for our own security and edward snowden is naive at best or perhaps some kind of foreign agent working for who knows whom. right she
10:09 am
contributes option or tons a discussing with us that the edward snowden saga mr townsend thank you very much indeed so snowden's now waiting for his request to be reviewed by russian officials and i discussed it with his news editor on the cross he added and he says moskos playing smith. our understanding is that the. initial request this additional submission that's been been confirmed by the federal migration service can be reviewed for up to three months so what we're hearing is that snowden will be given some form of temporary refuge or temporary asylum status this interesting really i think moved him from. a normal state status. status into something a little bit more concrete after the u.s. revoked his passport when he left hong kong so i think snowden then finds himself with some paper and some paper as any. version of richard would tell you some paper
10:10 am
is better than no paper and i think snowden is probably in a better position and may well be allowed to exit the transit area from airport where he's been holed up for for the last three weeks and if he is get out from there well then that gives him an opportunity to visit the other bases or for example is on the bench in venezuela nicaragua and bolivia. in moscow and perhaps establish formal asylum request procedures there and basically shore up his options so russia is giving him asylum and temporary asylum but you don't want him to stay well does that mean in my opinion i think they're playing this snowden situation very well it's very clear that this was not a situation of their making not an entirely welcome situation either as far as the kremlin. would be concerned but i think they've i think they've done a very well on the one hand made it very clear that snowden would not be allowed to
10:11 am
continue to damage the famous our u.s. partners while. absolutely unacceptable and as we all know. putin's work that's not going to happen on the other hand the involvement of anatoly who has a has a background in human rights. work. has probably help shore up the human rights aspect of it and they seem to be playing the human rights aspect of snowden's asylum requests by the book so i think the kremlin seems to be coming out of this new really strong position. stability remains elusive in egypt with at least seven people killed and over two hundred sixty injured in overnight clashes between police and supporters of the deposed president mohamed morsy these trade battles happened as a senior u.s. official visited egypt for the first time since the military took over his belt true as the latest now from cairo. once again the egyptian streets erupted into
10:12 am
these very violent and chaotic street battles between supporters of the ousted brotherhood leaned on the security forces which actually continued into the early hours of this morning and we have heard that people have died hundreds have been injured in the latest is that over four hundred people have been arrested in connection with this sort of all to cations what's actually happened was that it took place in tutor cations across the capital one very close to i'm standing here in tahrir square and ramses. supports is that all of mohamed morsi has left the city and in the city basically confronted security forces responded with tear gas the protesters threw back the rocks spread into the side streets burning whole neighborhoods to a standstill meanwhile in another city in support of more see. which is across the river from where i am right now so against the backdrop to this very violent situation here in egypt's top official. the deputy secretary of state has
10:13 am
visited egypt he is the first major fischel from america to come post the toppling of mohamed morsi he reportedly was here to meet meeting officials including the president interim president of the month and also civil society leaders and business leaders now washington said the purpose of his visit was to underscore u.s. support for egypt and also pushing for the end of violence and a transition towards sort of civilian democracy what we are seeing at the moment here in egypt is possibly a movement to the north towards the west from this interim government as the latest appointments have been mohamed atta but a day of eating opposition figure is very good relations with the u.s. he's now vice president for an f. as in addition the foreign minister is the egyptian over the former egyptian ambassador to the u.s. he of course is very well regarded in the u.s. the u.s. for their part are making very cautious in the way they're labeling what's happened in the last weeks from the beginning we've expressed concern. it's about
10:14 am
a religiously motivated tensions including a president morsi from you say that i think i just said it man i think when you say that you used his name. the question was do we agree with the call of the germans and i said yes i mean is it is the same but why i welcome your not matt i'm not playing this game and it's not. well as you can hear that you know she's refusing to say the word mohamed morsi even though there are people here who actually against the ousted leader who believe that he is being held as a political prisoner and you are supposed to be very careful about the use of the word coup military coup which is something that other nations. this would be because of course this would affect u.s. assistance to egypt that one point five billion dollars assistance they give to the army if this is able to carry so you could be having a very cautious movement from the u.s. who are you know reaching out to the interim government refusing so far to meet
10:15 am
with any. supporters of the ousted leader and at the same time maintaining a kind of cautious reaction to the military behavior the last two weeks. caesar approved based on information from a reliable source claiming israel used the military base to known terrorists and as tricon syria on kurds also condemns the media for even mentioning the r.c. report in this correspondent point to steer an agent. the turkish foreign minister saying to quote him it is absolutely wrong and he's accused of spreading the story of an act of betrayal he said that turkey will never be a partner nor a part of such attacks and that the ones who claim this one to damage turkey's power and reputation he slammed the turkish media for even mentioning the report now we approached the israeli defense forces for a second time asking them to comment their reply was that the response has not changed since the earlier on so and that is that they refused to comment on the
10:16 am
issue we never got a reply from the prime minister's office there we just received an e-mail response to our request saying that they will not be participating in our broadcast we also never got a reply from the foreign affairs ministry a reminder of what we actually know at this stage a reliable source told r.t. that israel use a turkish military base to help stage the recent air strike on the syrian city of latakia now what we know is that it was a pre-dawn attack it happened in early july latakia is a key syrian ports not far from a russian base they were several syrian troops who were reportedly killed and wounded in that attack the ati sources tell us that israeli planes left that military base in turkey and approached latakia from the sea and this was to make sure that they were not inside syrian airspace and so that they could not become
10:17 am
a legitimate target of the syrian air force what is important is that the attack originated on the turkish side of the border and revelations that turkey may in fact be copper a tin with israel against an arab country would indeed be for lack of a better word highly inconvenient for turkey itself and for its nato allies including the united states you need to remember that turkey positions itself as a key power player and a regional why of all of israel. political analyst chris bambery says despite unfriendly rhetoric in the past turkey and israel are still close ally turkey is a key nato frontline state with a massive military given to it by united states so there is a historic alliance between israel and took you fueled by dislike of many of the arab states of board perceived as being enemies but. agreed to to the use of a turkish military base for an attack on syria this is going to fuel the discontent
10:18 am
which is already facing with the demonstrations born elsewhere in tax and square some countries in the arab world so do you really get tired else who really could not care of who is carrying out attacks on the outside regime he wouldn't care of israel was doing in elves but i think across the arab world it will be seen as bad news if the turkish military have supported this attack in any way the new it's going to open up a whole can of worms inside the inside the region because we nords well that israel would wait to use turkey as a staging post for an attack on iran i don't they're allowing the use of bases for attacks in syria will be used to seem basis for an attack on iran it shows just how far things have come down the road in their determination of various things to unseat the outside regime and how prepared they are to go all in pursuit of that of that goal and right after the break a quarter verdict which divided america look at what's happening after george

illinois there are even says they're outraged with anger for the new world of the george zimmerman we all know that more than eight hundred thousand people have signed their names shot put session that was put forth by the a.c.l.u. called for the u.s. justice department to open it up the women all prosecution against george zimmerman on civil rights charges. as as we see the anger and the outrage is still boiling up from coast to coast it seems like now that that this verdict has been rendered it feels like it's open season like we all have a target on our back not just from the police so we don't just worry about the police now have to worry about some crazy races person killing us and claiming self-defense you know what i think it strikes on because here in new york even though it's such a diverse city we still you know see that kind of racism and discrimination on a day to day basis there's a how deep was

too so we'll meet a very special part of the russian military right after this break. or remember those old wacky communist countries who constantly boost their numbers to make themselves feel better or who cares if stores aren't the end this piece of paper a one hundred thousand tons of potatoes that is good enough for me well now we're in a new age of technology but the same lying to make yourself feel good is still going strong it just moved over to the capitals world the u.s. state department's bureau of international information programs has spent six hundred thirty thousand dollars on facebook advertising campaigns to get fans a sense of the government is out there to buy likes or what a fantastic use of tax dollars but wait maybe i'm being too pessimistic perhaps it

worked and really helped spread the message of the us state department effectively wellness procter general's report says that since the advertising campaign started twenty eleven there has been a dramatic increase in users liking state department sites but the problem is that only two percent of them actually use the sites so you go. you get what you pay for a big bag of likes but few hard core fans probably the most shocking example is a vision of america group in farsi made for rain yes which has gotten over four hundred twenty thousand members but only one percent of them is actually in iran where facebook advertising doesn't even exist that's affective getting lots of likes doesn't mean you are actually reaching people instead of paying for them why not you know get them naturally bar by providing interesting honest content on a regular basis oh wait that takes effort and honesty yeah you know what just keep wasting our tax dollars but that's just my opinion.
10:29 am
