question more. whistleblower on the run and word snowden finally submitted a request for a temporary asylum in russia and is expected to and he's transit limbo at a moscow airport in a matter of days. campaign against scottish sovereignty the british government paints a grim picture of how in a panic this would damage scotland with repercussions ranging from currency problems to hi i'm obama roaming charges. and as the world student games draw to a close and russia with a record a medal haul for the host nation the competition comes under fire from critics alleging the event has become politicized.
3:01 am
this is r.t. coming to you live from the russian capital i'm marina josh and welcome to the program a fugitive whistleblower edward snowden could soon be able to leave the confinement of the moscow airport transit zone where he has been stranded for over three weeks now the u.s. intelligence leaker has officially request a temporary asylum in russia with a view to seeking long term refuge in south america well r.t.s. andrew farmer joins us now with more on this from cher major airport andrew we know that the lawyer there has volunteered to represent snowden has been talking to r t what more can you tell us about this. but at the moment what we do know is that off being holed up here for the last three weeks mr snowden should be able to walk through the exit doors and on to russian soil proper within the next few days as you mentioned that he has applied for temporary political asylum in russia. and
3:02 am
although that could take three months to process in the meantime he will receive documents we believe within five days which would allow him to go through passport control because at the moment we should remember he doesn't have a valid passport or visa in the meantime his lawyer said the reason he has applied for asylum is because he fears for his own life if he should return to the u.s. . but when asked migration service agent why he chose to file his petition in russian and why he came here he replied that he fears for his life and wellbeing and also fears that he could face torture or execution and what he says sounds quite convincing as the u.s. still are ministers both capital punishment and. therefore i believe that under such circumstances and considering his reputation he should be granted temporary asylum i think this would be a humane step and since russia's actions humanely but the u.s.
3:03 am
government cannot view this as hostile behavior towards the united states. but even though you. were his lawyer also added that mr snowden had agreed it appears not to release further documents that could harm u.s. interests while he's on russian territory mr snowden's words that goal is attainable but it's an important point because president putin has made this a precondition of asylum because as you heard there from the quote from the lawyer russia wants to be seen in this saga is having a humanitarian role and wants to make it very clear that this is not a hostile act towards the u.s. so why is he has his papers in place and can leave the airport what sort of options lie ahead of him. well we hear firstly he has to find accommodation we're not quite sure how much help he will get with that but secondly if he is granted political asylum temporary political asylum for one year he will have the rights
3:04 am
and freedoms of any russian citizen so he could ultimately find a job here we're not quite sure what will happen after that maybe you know maybe he'll like it maybe he'll try and apply for permanent asylum but as we've also heard he does have other options on the table and in principle he has been offered asylum in latin america from three countries of venezuela bolivia and nicaragua u.s. so we're not quite sure what will happen in the long term but what we do know at the moment probably mr snowden is a man. because he can now look forward see however temporary a new life and a new start here in russia. all right great to have choices under farmers thanks very much indeed for this update our correspondent or farmer. airport there were edward snowden is still stuck in the transit zone waiting for a decision on his temporary asylum request and with been closely following the twists and turns and the snowden saga of bowls and air and on the web so you can go

together than we would. it is time to speak out whatever the consequences because something very special is. that sense of danger is one that the british government has recently been accused of playing on too heavily though in the run up to the referendum westminster has been busy publishing papers on how it believes independence will be bad for scotland the latest and most bizarre caution is about mobile phone bills and new government paper suggests that if scotland breaks away then scots visiting the u.k. and using their phones will need to pay extortionate raving charges the scottish government has already debunked that myth saying that all roaming charges in the european union will be abolished in twenty sixteen but according to whitehall scotland might have to reapply to join the european union as well the british government has also been keen to remind that the royal mail on the post office will

no longer be for scotland should they choose independence nor will the two hundred or so public bodies that deal with bureaucratic procedures such as issuing driving licenses managing roads and even broadcasting such as the b.b.c. if wool that hasn't put off any of those considering voting yes in the referendum next year well a recent think tank report has cautioned that an independent scottish army would struggle to defend itself and what about money well the scots say they'd like to keep the pound something the u.k. chancellor george osborne has been quick to dismiss so if the scots choose independence it could be no pounds no easy you know army high phone bills and not even any royal mail to use as an alternative the repeated questions have led to accusations that the anti independence campaign is engaging in scurrilous scaremongering what we're getting there is the kind of fear factor managing you

teenager trayvon martin last year but was found not guilty professor albrecht from the university of minnesota believes the remands acquittal reflects a deep racial bias within the u.s. legal system. all that data shows the justice system in this country is racial from the moment of impact police arrest more people older and white people. are convicted in greater numbers the apes are sentences that are longer and there are greater numbers of people who are in prison and united states are given in terms of their population so we already have all that data and that this we see as a continuation of. this man has been acquitted so now is the time for our government to hear our voices that's why i live in minneapolis the state of minnesota we will have two thousand people in downtown minnesota in front of

a hunger strike in solidarity with the detainees as the root causes of the protests are still being sidelined. it doesn't really matter how many people are on strike because the real principle here is that fifty two percent. for release should just be released and president president said so so they just need to do it now in terms of the ones who are on hunger strike the u.s. military. and they've done just the last thirty years. some of the prisoners are in the taking a little bit to eat because that sort of program does during ramadan to break your fast but i'm not giving up i think the military certainly plans to continue with force i'm afraid but the other thing the military understands is trying to force people to bend to their will. i don't think the united states won't start releasing prisoners and i think finally we're getting the message through the worst house and hopefully some prisoners being released too late. now take

to around thirteen thousand student athletes from over one hundred sixty countries competing in twenty seven different sports making it one of the largest university of all time now it all began with the spectacular opening ceremony in the cars on arena behind me around twelve days ago tens of millions of people have watched worldwide on the global t.v. audience and russian estimates say the seven hundred thousand people have descended on because within the last fortnight or so now these games proceed more sports than ever before a more medals were on offer and even at the london olympics last summer the russian authorities have shied away from the fact that they say this is a dress rehearsal a dry run if you will ahead of the winter olympics and the hope is that if there are any organizational issues that need to be ironed out and they can do so ahead of sochi next year. and we've heard there's been a lot of criticism surrounding the games both preparations and. where does this
3:19 am
come from. well russia has been criticized in some quarters for politicizing the games you can probably hear the closing ceremonies taking place this evening they're just having rehearsals for. basically russia being criticized for politicizing the games on trying to enhance their image in the world of sport ahead of a big sporting decade for the country now they do have some professional athletes in their ranks up against the i. it is and this is being inflicted in the medals table now russia took the medals table with one hundred thirty one gold medals and china in second place with just twenty four so you can see there's a false difference but the rules all the same for any competing nation and every outfit in the face has to be vetted and accepted by facing the committee that oversees the game time surprise surprise two years ago when the danger in china was china it topped the medals table now but touched on local government said last week the call for a million tickets had been sold for events across the city but there have been some

woman's of discontent that's the lot of the venues have been filled with people who have just tickets but actually turning up that's one of the other issues for citizens with being leveled at russia on another one is the cost people saying the four point five billion u.s. dollars which is the russian estimate of the stuff these guys just how much they cost is simply too much money but the organizers are saying it's not a one off payment look at the investment it's an investment in the city's infrastructure has improved their new growth new hotels of course thirty sporting venues have been built from scratch as well in fact one resident said to me that the city is on recognizable from how it looked five years ago it will demise is pointing to the legacy when the cost was leveled out there last but now well the closing ceremony as i mentioned the rehearsals are taking place behind me takes place this evening prime minister dmitri medvedev will be in attendance the official bottom be handed over to south to reverse these games in two years' time bring russia to concentrate on the next global sporting event set place on the

launchers how do they end up in the hands if there's a will there's a way and if you want to get let's say and i'm two or three grenade launcher on an employer car being will find a way to get it so long as you have the right amount of money and the right amount of for connections it's not clear whether the weapons were captured stolen or bought on the black market this weapon might be ended up in the hands of hezbollah from. the. military our lebanese army of course illegal but i don't believe that is and. could be the source of this weapon in iraq similar u.s. designed weapons appear in the hands of syrian rebels including fighters was all new sort of front and al qaeda affiliate the u.s. has designated a terrorist group it shows the alarming tendency for the weapons to change hands in unexpected ways but despite this the obama administration has decided to directly arm the rebels in syria
3:23 am
a move supported by washington's hawks we can give them the heavy weapons that they need who's there who's them i know them i've met them they're there unfortunately for senator mccain some of the rebels he met in syria were kidnappers and his office had to issue a statement saying the senator did not know that when he agreed to do a photo op with them but not everyone in washington things flooding syria with more arms is the solution a group of congressmen have introduced the legislation to block unauthorized u.s. military aid to syrian rebels arguing that the law prohibits any military assistance to syrian opposition forces unless congress issues a formal declaration of war. since our nation's security interests in syria are unclear we're risk giving money and military assistance to our enemies. there's great ironies to supporting the syrian rebels one will be supporting forces that are associated with al-qaeda the two thousand and one use of authorization of force
3:24 am
said specifically that we could go after the taliban al qaeda and associated forces we will now be one of those associated forces because we will be allied with al qaeda against assad the voice of caution comes not only from the president's opposition in congress but also from former administration officials for us to think we can influence or determine the outcome of that i think is a mistake i thought it was a mistake in libya. and i think it is a mistake in syria we overestimate our ability to determine outcomes you may think that the u.s. has learned the hard way that by arming friends you may be arming your enemy but it seems u.s. meters yet again are ready to take that risk in washington i'm going to check out and i'll be back with a news headlines in the half an hour but for now reports on the powerful interests behind the genetically modified food industry.
