this is r t international live update crowds fill streets in central moscow to protest against the five year jail sentence for russian anti corruption alexina valmy he's been found guilty of embezzlement. aiding the enemy sticks is a military judge sifts through bradley manning's charges which could potentially. life behind bars with no parole. chaos al qaida reportedly announces plans to create its own state in syria using land captured by the opposition and seizing its money and weapons to. and there's money to be made by getting britain out of the e.u. a report coming up on how one think tank plans of robot reward head of the proposed
12:01 pm
referendum. are going to be just joy this is kevin owen here tonight is to say just past eight pm now on our top story this russian anti corruption blogger alexina valmy has been handed five years in jail for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from his state enterprise he was immediately arrested after the verdict and led from the dock in handcuffs you go piskun office in central moscow with reaction to the ruling no hi there we go what's going on where you are i can see the crowds are gathered what what is the state of play down there right now. where we're at miners a square right now this is one of the busiest places in the central moscow traffic wise this is the peak of the evening rush hour right now with heavy traffic on. the street. mine isn't
12:02 pm
a square itself was previously cleared by the police and blocked for all pedestrians and attempts to prevent the an authorized rally from taking place in support of and against the verdict of the five years jail sentence that the opposition blogger received earlier on thursday but as a result scores of people and his supporters gathered on the corners on the sidewalks around the intersection of these two main streets of the city this is just for you to understand this is right next to the state duma and right opposite the kremlin opposition figures say that from five to seven thousand people gathered here it's hard for me to say on the spot since they are broken up in these sections but i say that it's definitely. a huge crowd of people perhaps a few thousand supporters did come here despite the fact that this rally was not authorized now the security here is quite heavy and just a couple of minutes ago we did see additional police buses are rife but the police
12:03 pm
are actually just standing here preventing people from getting onto the street itself there were several attempts or what seemed to be attempts by the activists to block traffic they were resolved by the authorities and now basically the police are just standing and preventing people from blocking traffic ok can you remind us again it's been a long drawn out exactly what he was convicted of in the end and give us a little history about this case. have you still hear me there can you give me a bit more history remind our viewers a little bit more about this case i think we've lost him we've lost the signal ok we'll get back to him a little bit later but you can see the scenes playing out in the center of moscow near the state duma opposite the kremlin we got some comments from russia analyst mark semi-colon a he says the case proves the cold war to choose in the west are still alive. if something like this comes up it's very easy then to take
12:04 pm
a stick to the russian state or the russian government and say that they are behaving like the communists they haven't really improved they haven't really moved to democracy the rule of law liberal market economy and so on so therefore there's a there is a prejudice there is a lovely lovely in the west we turn to russia the only way that russia can overcome this is presumably by showing that the law is not a paper that. is really controlled law and that to push this absurd the democracy is in fact practiced and so this is a long a long hard road lots of mccauley let's go back now to the scene just outside the kremlin ego because can answer this again i think we got the sound back to you know you could hear a scared live on our t.v. yeah just if you can great just could you remind us that story last year and remind our viewers about this very long drawn out case and exactly what novell meat was sentenced of if you just remind us. well actually no one is known
12:05 pm
initially for his anticorruption online projects and the irony of this whole story is that he was found guilty of organizing a criminal scheme to steal around half a million dollars' worth of timber from a state company the court found out that it was done through the company which was headed by another person bill that i could set up who was given a four year jail sentence and one that was given five while the maximum jail sentence for such a crime is ten years behind bars however the latest development concerning the verdict itself is that the prosecutor's office has filed an appeal against arrest right after the verdict was announced because it actually comes into force illegally in ten days this is the same time that no one in his defense have to appeal the verdict and since he was arrested right there and coughed in the courthouse and taken by the police the prosecutor's office is now filed an appeal
12:06 pm
against that so theoretically it is possible that the opposition blogger may be a released until the verdict comes into force officially so this story is still developing the people here. probably here are chanting freedom and freedom to understand that while he once again this rally was not authorized but nevertheless the thousands came here in moscow we've heard that around ten people are going to be taking some clark and some other detentions were made in st petersburg since other rallies are also taking place in the over twenty other cities across the country now of course at one point he said sometime in the future he would like to run for president more immediately he was running running for the post of marrow. so what's this verdict now going to do to that i guess. well absolutely not when he was planning to run for mayor at the upcoming election
12:07 pm
in moscow this fall earlier he did also say that he saw it as up as a possibility that he could potentially run for president when the time comes but the thing is legally is if he's lawyers feel with the appeal against the verdict then this would be basically a cross on his future political career now by name sells a very controversial figure like i said he made his first supporters through his online anti-corruption projects but he gained the majority of his population during the mass we. just two years ago following the problem. in russia this is when he truly became one of the leaders of the opposition despite his open symphony sympathy to the nationalists and despite the fact that the whole opposition movement in russia is still not united clearly he's still one of its leaders and while people are still standing here i don't really know how long this is going to
12:08 pm
last since once again this was not this wasn't authorized so we'll keep you posted with the events unfolding before you go you so you don't know how long it's going to last again describing to our viewers if you hold something like this in moscow you normally lead a license a permit to do it you have to start you stop on time otherwise the police come along it's russia it's the center of moscow they have to clear the streets i guess they say it's not likely to happen imminently. i'm sorry kevin can you repeat that last question please. is there a likelihood that the police imminently will come in and clear that to keep the public right away in downtown moscow the very heart of it because this isn't a sanctioned rally. ok yes i see what you're saying well this is what is so far been. surprising since they usually when rallies on are on authorized and especially when these very important roles of the city are involved especially at the peak of the evening rush hour then police police do
12:09 pm
usually intervene but what we're here seeing here now and this is going to happening for the past few hours now is that sure there's a lot of police but they are really standing here and preventing people from from walking in the road and there have been several attempts to do that perhaps provocations which could lead to lead to possible detentions in the future but so far we've seen almost none of that or the ten people that have been detained reportedly ok go thanks that will be coming back to through the course of the evening from all going to line as well from the office further to what we were saying earlier on about the fact that he was running for mayor at the moment he can't but there his office is saying that if he is released if this appeal there are going to lodge apparently is successful then he will run for candidate one of the candidates one of many candidates in fact standing for the role of moscow will bring in more opinion more analysis on the case throughout the evening of course plus many more developments at r.t.
12:10 pm
dot com and on our twitter feed as well. right on the scene. first for you and i think that you're. on our reporters. in. the. military judge has refused to drop the most serious charge facing will supply bradley manning that of aiding the enemy if found guilty the former private accused of leaking classified information to wiki leaks could then face life in jail without parole andrew blake brings us more on the day's ruling. bening as you know is charged with around twenty different counts and aiding the enemy is the most significant of these if convicted he would receive a maximum of life in prison it's actually
12:11 pm
a conviction that could come with capital punishment but the government has already elected to pursue that charge anyways manning could still be convicted under aiding the enemy after today because the presiding military judge said that the government actually did provide enough evidence so that they can actually go on and properly proceed with the case now david croom is the civilian defense attorney representing private manning he had argued after the prosecution rested earlier this month that the government could not provide adequate enough evidence that would necessitate to the judge having to rule either that private manning did or did not aid the enemy now government prosecutors on the other hand they insist that when manning leaked intelligence the web site wiki leaks that material because it was eventually ending up in the hands of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula the indirectly aided al qaeda and therefore should go to jail forever so the significance of today is that while manning earlier faced a maximum of only twenty years in prison if the judge wanted to drop this charge
12:12 pm
going back to facing a possible life sentence if convicted of aiding the enemy purchase of and here for three years already it was over one thousand one hundred days before private manning's court martial officially restarted back in early june and at this point there is there is demonstrators holding vigils outside of fort meade at the military base in maryland where the court martial is being held every single week there is a vigil held outside the gate and there's demonstrations being planned all over the world on a weekly basis i know there's one going to be in d.c. this week and more around the globe as the trial. continues and it's scheduled to wrap up next month and for. a lot of cash prizes a way to get it when you can come up with the winning blueprint for britain's exit from the european union the u.k. on the pitch you get to the government should britain old a referendum eventually but he has got that story. picture the scene is the year twenty seventeen and britons have just very to in favor of exiting the beleaguered
12:13 pm
european union so the government now needs to implement a road map for how to leave that's what the u.k.'s institute for economic affairs think tank is also economists who imagine in order to come up with the best blueprint for britain's potential exit from the european union it's a competition and the winner who comes up with the best proposal will be awarded one hundred thousand euros well to talk about the challenge i'm joined by dr richard wellings from the institute for economic affairs dr weddings why i don't want to the competition now it's four years until the referendum and even so britain's might vote to stay in the european union at that point that's true but i mean it is such an important issue that is important that economists start thinking about the consequences of britain potentially leaving the given that there's such a large amount of your skepticism of most british public it is quite plausible that in a few years time britain will be leaving so i mean is absolutely essential that we have some idea of where britain is going to go with the winning strategy be put
12:14 pm
forward to the government to use in case of a euro exit yes i mean where we're going to publish the winning strategy along with some of the other better entries as well said to be plenty of ideas that the governments look at and hopefully come out with a very very sound plan now the prize is aimed at looking at the least disruptive way to leave the euro but there are those that say that leaving the euro zone will be detrimental to the case economy no matter how you do it obviously i mean there were major upside potentially because the u.k. can then get rid of all this very burdensome e.u. regulation on jobs and climate change and so on all the red tape is suffocating business but obviously the key to this is whether we retain very strong free trade links with the rest of europe that's absolutely essential that we have great free trade links with europe and the rest of the world will be the key to success in the future dr welling's thank you very. thanks for telling us about the competition now the prize is going to be judged by a panel that includes former chancellor nigel lawson he recently claimed that the
12:15 pm
british economy would be better off if britain were outside the european union. i see london well of course prime minister cameron motives for proposing a referendum tired his political success of wrong questions from the onset now on our website we want you to tell us what you think drove the tories to recall the exit vote taken part of this telling us just over forty percent of this bit less than last hour and believe that britain is trying to get out before the e.u. caves in on itself slightly fewer thirty eight percent this out think the referendum is just being used to distract the public from more important issues just over a tenth of you say it's an issue of sovereignty and that london is tired of brussels pressure the rest to the minority eight percent the think it's for the benefit of the british economy have your say r.t. dot com always good to hear from you ok on the way with me kevin zero in short the u.s. congress gives a surveillance ultimatum to obama and we report on the tense standoff between loyalists and nationalists in northern ireland right after the break.
12:16 pm
12:17 pm
northern syria could be facing the prospect of becoming a terrorist state within a state sources in the free syrian army which is the major western backed rebel group claim that al qaida plans to declare islamic rule over territory near the border with turkey until recently the opposition was believed to be cooperating with extremist groups in its fight against president assad but there are now signs the relationship is growing so let's get more so we. can. you imagine okai hiding in some caves in remote mountains not anymore they want their own
12:18 pm
country they found the land for syria the part of syria which is under the rebels control we're talking about the northern part of the country that borders turkey according to an influential arabic newspaper off charcol outside which cite the source in the free syrian army a kind of feel weird it militants intend to accidently assert their control over the territory immediately after ramadan ramadan ends around the ninth of august according to the source of a kind is about to announce an islamic state in syria they want full control over the weapons coming from turkey and the money coming from oil smuggling in syria's eastern province of their own store for example a network of tribes and smugglers has exploited the chaos of war to create an illicit oil trade with the reports that the al qaeda linked. understanding with the tribes over the division of spoils the all of course use this profits to buy more weapons and pates fighters now apparently they want more they feel powerful enough
12:19 pm
to want more it makes some of the rebels nervous of course many rebels ordinated their efforts with the all new threat but those who refuse to do that risked their lives recently the all new threat have killed several members of the free syrian army including one member of the western backed supreme military council the territory is controlled by the rebels now have all the signs of becoming quite a land and in this new all the land you have things like checkpoints where the militants check whether people are fasting more or not locals from near aleppo say they check their songs to see if they are fasting and if they are not the militants . many syrians are of course deeply saddened by what's becoming of their country. as to the threat of possible al qaida state in syria with real close listen award winning blogger neal good to be on the program tonight because it's not just going to a list just to see it also some profit to be made i guess as well because. there is looking for the profitable oil smuggling routes and weapons supply routes to you.
12:20 pm
absolutely it's interesting isn't it when president assad was warning about al-qaeda in syria from twenty eleven or was he was dismissed by the west it was scaremongering etc he was saying that al qaeda was coming to her in syria and now we're hearing this from the f.s.a. so it's interesting isn't it that those of those who didn't want this were to have were dismissed as the apologist for a sad ologist of the syrian government now the west is that a wake up to what's really going on and i think having said that it's very important to understand the f.s.a. strategy i think the free syrian army is very keen to get western intervention i think they're now change their strategy unless and look al qaeda going to take control unless we do need and help us who's going to buy a low end of the day from al qaeda as interesting is and i think it's very important to understand that one of the biggest myths in international relations over the last eight years is the west coast al qaeda they're not able support marriage. and libya for example in the balkans in the ninety's have al qaeda linked groups etc if they want to topple a secular regime and so it's a myth that think they're the big enemy the biggest enemy was
12:21 pm
a western the biggest and western foreign policy in this region is to counter iran and hezbollah so i don't actually think the question out ok the state to exist however they're very happy to work to try to talk and present a sad. funny a world in it regarding fact the oil again if they got more of a control more of a hold on in syria bigger marketplace in syria how much could it affect world prices or would that would that not be a significant problem i don't know it would be a massive problem but i think adding to that a i don't think the west would actually allow it to happen get in because i think their strategy is has always been to use our secular regimes but he says that the position al-qaeda will actually get into power or status their overall supplies etc then i think they will intervene and it's interesting that the neo cons who actually want intervention syria are actually changing their tune here actually saying now look we've got to intervene to help the f.s.a. . and not a weapon sokol chemical weapons will end up in al qaeda. and met with
12:22 pm
a story in the sun newspaper here in britain today so i think that the il cons are looking for any excuse to intervene militarily soon now. to try and get their way because we started this by talking about logistics one of the key things here cause the f.s.a. could fall itself up for both fronts it could do and i think the f.s.a. does it in a very weak position and the f.s.a. have lost basically and i think now their last camp is to say look you've got to help us and to try to put the trends of the good guys the moderate rebels but they're not already committed some terrible crimes terrible terrorist atrocities so it's i think it's a kind of faux division to say that there are bad rebels and good rebels the fact is elections are due in syria next year twenty forty and there's no excuse for anybody to be using violence now to achieve political change in syria democratic elections are available to people so i think the f.s.a. this is a sort of desperate last chance for the really. final thought if they do lose their foothold if a terrorist state is a stablished in the country surely that's for foreign intervention of some kind no
12:23 pm
will absolutely and this could could be a game because i think now the western powers hope obviously they thought that by now president in talk he hasn't really got too much support in the country so i think the kind of neocon strategy now is to kind of use our as a duncan years and years can use ok you can use in years to kind of a just a point to mention i think this is the danger now. it will be established the neo cons we're putting pressure on president obama to say look you books are now invade syria to stop al-qaeda go where will the times be the western policy which is actually how are you going to get into this position in the first place bill clark it's always very good talking on the program here your explanations about stuff for got a newspaper contributor at award winning political blogger we do appreciate it thank you thanks very much you're a u.s. congressman thomas given the intelligence community and all to make him scale but mass surveillance will lose the power entirely now it happened at a house judiciary committee hearing where cross party lawmakers demanded greater accountability but some doubt they'll make good on that threat among them is cindy
12:24 pm
code legal director for the electronic frontier foundation one of the organizations challenging the n.s.a. surveillance program what they've been able to slow us down we're is the argument that it's just all too secret and can't be decided by the courts because of national security and state secret well not only did they lose in the courts with that argument but now they've admitted the central facts of the program we're talking about so we're hopeful that that will help us move forward with the cases a little more quickly i would point out that trying to change things through the u.s. congress is also a slow process so you know while it's frustrating for those of us who want change neither the courts nor the congress moves are ticking lovely quickly i think there are many members of congress who are in a situation in which they basically signed off on this and now maybe perhaps feel that they need to defend it rather than taking the steps that i think the american

people want which is to stop it authorities in northern ireland are set to rule on whether loyalists can march through the nationalist area of belfast where riots first broke out six nights ago the major political players there will now be to try to thrash out how the recurring violence can be stemmed in the future how to surf earth reports. well the former u.s. government peace envoy to northern ireland richard haass bank installment yesterday party moves in ireland tools now first minister peter robinson has said that all party group has been set up with the purpose of seeking an alternative to the parades commission the other groups rule say going to be looking to bring food a set of recommendations by the end of the year on parades and protests flags and symbols a hugely important issue for new zealand blackall within will be seen by many as the only result parts of the peace process now. often we see days
12:26 pm
cultural elements really a motivator for the sectarian flare up over the sort that we've seen following on from last friday's july twelfth parade now after that we saw the trade commission's controversial ruling in force by police that then led to very serious rioting by the loyalist marches in moved belfast and there's been really a period a sustained writing i know the orange order had yesterday applied to the parades commission to have another parade on saturday this coming saturday very near to that contested area now that's been seen by many to be quite a provocative me move some people speaking out saying to the orange order hasn't learned any lessons from the violence we see of recent days already moving seventy police officers injured more than sixty people arrested more than one hundred one strain and everyone paying that which it has been here that these all party talks
12:27 pm
now getting underway can bring an end to violence. coming up here's a thought imagine being paid by the bank every time you take out a loan ludicrous we'll find out how that works that with. here after the break. you want to hear something truly baffling the u.s. supreme court has ruled that generic drug makers cannot be sued for bad reactions to their products only the original branded creators of the drugs can the court's decision was five to four overturning a multimillion dollar award for a woman who was horribly wounded by taking a medication which gave her toxic epidermal necrosis which is basically the
12:28 pm
equivalent of getting third degree burns all over her body and of course after winning the case mutual pharmaceutical company is demanding their millions of dollars back from the woman who they naturally blame for having side effects from the medicine they made themselves remember this is not just a ruling about one drug but a ruling about all generic drugs which are eighty percent of the u.s. market all of them will not have any accountability i cannot wrap my head around the logic of only punishing the creator of a product and granting immunity to anyone that later reproduces said product i mean would any sane person say that if you shoot a person with a colt forty five pistol that is a crime but if you use a copycat made in mexico to blow your neighbors off well that's ok because it's a generic copy no no sane person would allow generic drug producers to have no liability for their product but that's just my opinion.
12:29 pm
welcome to the kaiser report i-max kaiser is big coming quite apparent that quantitative easing is the. monetary policy central banks had no problem checking in but there's no way to check out now to explain all this let's turn to herbert yes max keiser well you know that the u.s. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke when he basically alleged that he might taper one day well the bond pocalypse set upon us and now he's claiming to un taper well i'm not actually going to taper but the question is quantitative easing can it be unwound so to economists look at what's happening in the u.k. and what they found.
