thanks for tuning in this saturday morning i'm lucy catherine of and you're watching our t.v. well we begin with our breaking news in egypt at least seventeen people have been killed hundreds injured during what's believed to be the largest protest that the country has seen in two and a half years of turmoil clashes between the supporters and the opponents of the ousted president mohamed morsi erupted across the country with some reports claiming that pro muslim brotherhood demonstrators were specifically targeted by gunmen are true will be joining us live from cairo in just a bit but first to get some political analysis on the situation in egypt i'm joined by dr ahmad gundam in the united states earth thanks for joining us what do you make of the situation on the ground right now i mean we know that the ultimatum of the egyptian army to the muslim brotherhood expires today what do you believe we should expect. well this is this is the reality of them in law to military coup

a very bloody night here in egypt as clashes erupted in many parts of the country and continue into saturday morning off to these nationwide going through protests both in support and against the ousted leader mohamed morsi i was actually in the way a mosque sittin in nasr city in the capital where there has been an ongoing sit in in support of mohamed morsi when the clashes erupted what eyewitnesses are saying although we haven't completely reports that protested have attempted to extend their sit in past the area that they had been staying in for the last few weeks towards to go to the bridge at this point security forces then attempted to push them back with t. gas butte hospital doctors are reporting people have died and there are a number of injured as well and what we're seeing now is apparently eyewitnesses saying that some people have been coming in with gunshot wounds although we can't confirm whether come by a voice nice as well as people having problems with take ash inhalation but it was

very chaotic with the injured coming in every five minutes and ambulances people were on the back of motorcycles bringing the wounded into the city and now this is also happened in other parts of the country there were violent clashes in the coastal city of alexandria between rival protest groups when supporters and opponents of the ousted leader met in the main running point also you leaving people dead this is been very very bloody civilian on civilian car shows. this is also seen in the coastal city or in the no doubt the city of. so really egypt is had quite a difficult night so friday night on saturday morning with several people dead across the country this comes off the ministry of interior released a statement friday night saying that they would and any of these open ended demonstrations in support of the ousted leader however the out of the county at they would do this equally well however this statement by the interim president

himself saying that these protests have to stop that the streets cannot continue to be blocked leading many muslim brotherhood officials to say this is part of a talkative crackdown on the group and a crackdown on supposes of mohamed morsi we expect further clashes on the horizon as those in the city in about the way and also other parts of the country refuse to leave with the security forces upping their deployment on the streets we've got tanks on the streets and the police are also mounted across the country so really it's very tense here and we expect to see further deaths and bell the army has pledged decisive action in this case what can we expect in that sense. absolutely we're seeing really massive confrontation between those who supports mohamed morsi and the military particularly when the military reportedly released the deadline for them to leave the streets we have of course seen massive amounts

of tanks here and the military joining the police in attacking people saying or attacking these citizens of course this comes off the announcement on friday that mohamed morsi would be kept in detention following investigations into charges that he's been conspiring against the country with the palestinian organization hamas in addition to possibly being responsible for the deaths of the prison guards and offices when he broke out of prison during the eighteen day uprising in two thousand and eleven so this is a very serious serious allegation against the former president it could see him serve jail time this of has of course few the fire and the anger by his supporters and of course in islam is group to miss them but the hoods who are saying this is a very much a politically driven charge and that this is part of as i said a wider crackdown against the group by the military however the military does have a significant amount of support in the streets behind me here into her square there are still people out celebrating the ouster of mohamed morsy and have been chanting

to the people the army and the police are one hand they said they came to the streets on friday to fight terrorism following a pool from the head of the army but that sisi who called on people to support the military so we're seeing a massively divided country here between those who support the military and their actions including the ouster of mohamed morsi and those who still wants morsi to be reinstated as president we believe that he is the legitimate leader of egypt no side is backing down many people are dying the violence is continuing leading many to feed that this will only get worse certainly. frightening prospect r.t.l. true thank you for that update live from cairo now i want to bring back into the conversation dr ahmad got him who is the political analyst that we have on the line from new york if we can pull. thank you sir for joining us now you heard our correspondent there on the ground talk about this new sort of element of terrorism

in egypt with the army essentially rebranding this fight as a war against terror what do you make of this position. i don't know what's kind of terrorism that you know in a very peaceful protest in the middle of cairo just the word terrorism is a very like a political word and c.c. is using it is using the war in terror just to brand his own crackdown islamist and put it in make it like sound more american war and terrorism that the same war that george w. bush started so he wants to tell his friends in the united states that i'm doing the same as you do and i'm fighting terrorism too but in fact it is not in the reason there are peaceful protesters. sitting in the street are demanding that all one free them and demanding their own votes to be counted against a military coup this is a i understand if you fight in terrorism and say now you are versed in terrorism

and by the borders but do resume in the middle it was this peaceful protest or that doesn't make and doesn't make any sense after killing more than in teen peaceful protests or today they killed seventeen peaceful protests i didn't see any bombs or any message at the xo a tear it at that this is just this is just a military coup trying to take over egypt again is the will of the egyptian people also you've made your opinion quite clear military could trying to take over egypt as you say but at the same time you have thousands millions of people in fact on the street in support of the army's action so what is their spines to those people those egyptians there are egyptian the country is divided that's no doubt out about about i'm not saying that the country is united the. country is divided and i doubt i highly doubt there are millions of the numbers of me that is there is no way the streets of cairo are so useful egypt can take thirty millions that's

logically impossible. and i'm saying max and next on the have like one but the point of the point has been that i am going to say and i'm by far sorry. but the point isn't about the numbers the point is about the fact that you do have this division as you've mentioned between the muslim brotherhood supporters and the sort of the people who are in support of the actions the military has taken so what how do you move forward when you do have a large chunk of the population who is effectively happy with what the military has done call it a coup or not. but if i live in the united states and fifty percent of the population are going to the bomb and if we all who are going to ration are going to obama yesterday afternoon where you're going to be there and because they're going to bomb when you when you when you crack to democracy that is the difference between direct democracy and practicing mob rule you can mark just shipped from. that out of the market and

clear that they will only accept the fall of the side and despite the fact that they continually try to say that they're for peace negotiations it seems at every turn whether it's sending arms to the rebels whether it's sending them quote unquote non-lethal aid money in general supporting the gulf countries that are also supporting them that really all of the talk about peace is disingenuous and unlike russia and other countries they seem very. determined to push forward the syrian rebels as the new leadership of the country regardless of the situation on the ground when russia in the united states were originally trying to promote the geneva two conference we saw that the syrian rebels essentially said that they had no intention of negotiating until the situation on the ground changed that is so they gave the military upper hand so from their perspective they seem only willing to negotiate if the military situation allows them to have the upper hand in negotiations but if they seem to be losing the war if it seems that support for them inside of the country is dropping all of a sudden they have no desire to negotiate and they only want to continue to push
