breaking news on our t.v. fresh violence in egypt claims at least seventeen lives as pro muslim brotherhood demonstrators are reportedly targeted by snipers and cairo while fierce clashes erupted between supporters and opponents of the army in alexandria. the syrian national coalition agrees to take part in peace talks as the group meets with the u.n. security council for the first time. and the u.s. is the already breaking cyber fraud scam worth hundreds of millions of dollars believed to be the largest ever they are now seeking decades in prison for the happiness.
12:01 am
thanks for tuning in this saturday morning i'm lucy catherine of and you're watching our t.v. well we begin with our breaking news in egypt at least seventeen people have been killed hundreds injured during what's believed to be the largest protest that the country has seen in two and a half years of turmoil clashes between the supporters and the opponents of the ousted president mohamed morsi erupted across the country with some reports claiming that pro muslim brotherhood demonstrators were specifically targeted by gunmen are true will be joining us live from cairo in just a bit but first to get some political analysis on the situation in egypt i'm joined by dr ahmad gundam in the united states earth thanks for joining us what do you make of the situation on the ground right now i mean we know that the ultimatum of the egyptian army to the muslim brotherhood expires today what do you believe we should expect. well this is this is the reality of them in law to military coup
12:02 am
falding in front of our eyes this is the military this is their yellow coupe their military will try to force it all on edge and on the people and the people has to fight back the out fighting back peacefully the standing in the streets they're trying to fire to spec but they're as usually has happened in egypt and have been everywhere else they seem think the military will stop at nothing but to force a little on edge and. all right well look you know we're actually going to interrupt this interview momentarily we do have our correspondent live on the ground we're going to get back to his star i do want to bring in true into this conversation who should be joining us live from cairo right now hi there what what did you witness overnight with these clashes what's happening on the ground at the moment it looks kind of calm behind you but it seems like the situation is still somewhat ongoing. absolutely i mean it was
12:03 am
a very bloody night here in egypt as clashes erupted in many parts of the country and continue into saturday morning off to these nationwide going through protests both in support and against the ousted leader mohamed morsi i was actually in the way a mosque sittin in nasr city in the capital where there has been an ongoing sit in in support of mohamed morsi when the clashes erupted what eyewitnesses are saying although we haven't completely reports that protested have attempted to extend their sit in past the area that they had been staying in for the last few weeks towards to go to the bridge at this point security forces then attempted to push them back with t. gas butte hospital doctors are reporting people have died and there are a number of injured as well and what we're seeing now is apparently eyewitnesses saying that some people have been coming in with gunshot wounds although we can't confirm whether come by a voice nice as well as people having problems with take ash inhalation but it was
12:04 am
very chaotic with the injured coming in every five minutes and ambulances people were on the back of motorcycles bringing the wounded into the city and now this is also happened in other parts of the country there were violent clashes in the coastal city of alexandria between rival protest groups when supporters and opponents of the ousted leader met in the main running point also you leaving people dead this is been very very bloody civilian on civilian car shows. this is also seen in the coastal city or in the no doubt the city of. so really egypt is had quite a difficult night so friday night on saturday morning with several people dead across the country this comes off the ministry of interior released a statement friday night saying that they would and any of these open ended demonstrations in support of the ousted leader however the out of the county at they would do this equally well however this statement by the interim president
12:05 am
himself saying that these protests have to stop that the streets cannot continue to be blocked leading many muslim brotherhood officials to say this is part of a talkative crackdown on the group and a crackdown on supposes of mohamed morsi we expect further clashes on the horizon as those in the city in about the way and also other parts of the country refuse to leave with the security forces upping their deployment on the streets we've got tanks on the streets and the police are also mounted across the country so really it's very tense here and we expect to see further deaths and bell the army has pledged decisive action in this case what can we expect in that sense. absolutely we're seeing really massive confrontation between those who supports mohamed morsi and the military particularly when the military reportedly released the deadline for them to leave the streets we have of course seen massive amounts
12:06 am
of tanks here and the military joining the police in attacking people saying or attacking these citizens of course this comes off the announcement on friday that mohamed morsi would be kept in detention following investigations into charges that he's been conspiring against the country with the palestinian organization hamas in addition to possibly being responsible for the deaths of the prison guards and offices when he broke out of prison during the eighteen day uprising in two thousand and eleven so this is a very serious serious allegation against the former president it could see him serve jail time this of has of course few the fire and the anger by his supporters and of course in islam is group to miss them but the hoods who are saying this is a very much a politically driven charge and that this is part of as i said a wider crackdown against the group by the military however the military does have a significant amount of support in the streets behind me here into her square there are still people out celebrating the ouster of mohamed morsy and have been chanting
12:07 am
to the people the army and the police are one hand they said they came to the streets on friday to fight terrorism following a pool from the head of the army but that sisi who called on people to support the military so we're seeing a massively divided country here between those who support the military and their actions including the ouster of mohamed morsi and those who still wants morsi to be reinstated as president we believe that he is the legitimate leader of egypt no side is backing down many people are dying the violence is continuing leading many to feed that this will only get worse certainly. frightening prospect r.t.l. true thank you for that update live from cairo now i want to bring back into the conversation dr ahmad got him who is the political analyst that we have on the line from new york if we can pull. thank you sir for joining us now you heard our correspondent there on the ground talk about this new sort of element of terrorism
12:08 am
in egypt with the army essentially rebranding this fight as a war against terror what do you make of this position. i don't know what's kind of terrorism that you know in a very peaceful protest in the middle of cairo just the word terrorism is a very like a political word and c.c. is using it is using the war in terror just to brand his own crackdown islamist and put it in make it like sound more american war and terrorism that the same war that george w. bush started so he wants to tell his friends in the united states that i'm doing the same as you do and i'm fighting terrorism too but in fact it is not in the reason there are peaceful protesters. sitting in the street are demanding that all one free them and demanding their own votes to be counted against a military coup this is a i understand if you fight in terrorism and say now you are versed in terrorism
12:09 am
and by the borders but do resume in the middle it was this peaceful protest or that doesn't make and doesn't make any sense after killing more than in teen peaceful protests or today they killed seventeen peaceful protests i didn't see any bombs or any message at the xo a tear it at that this is just this is just a military coup trying to take over egypt again is the will of the egyptian people also you've made your opinion quite clear military could trying to take over egypt as you say but at the same time you have thousands millions of people in fact on the street in support of the army's action so what is their spines to those people those egyptians there are egyptian the country is divided that's no doubt out about about i'm not saying that the country is united the. country is divided and i doubt i highly doubt there are millions of the numbers of me that is there is no way the streets of cairo are so useful egypt can take thirty millions that's
12:10 am
logically impossible. and i'm saying max and next on the have like one but the point of the point has been that i am going to say and i'm by far sorry. but the point isn't about the numbers the point is about the fact that you do have this division as you've mentioned between the muslim brotherhood supporters and the sort of the people who are in support of the actions the military has taken so what how do you move forward when you do have a large chunk of the population who is effectively happy with what the military has done call it a coup or not. but if i live in the united states and fifty percent of the population are going to the bomb and if we all who are going to ration are going to obama yesterday afternoon where you're going to be there and because they're going to bomb when you when you when you crack to democracy that is the difference between direct democracy and practicing mob rule you can mark just shipped from. that out of the market and
12:11 am
counting votes to count even then you leave the country divided by your. reply if you've got a lot of people and are going to be all people are supporting it what are you doing but that make it legal is that makes it legal to go and kill a beautiful court system because you have but also from having the kind of relation i don't the i don't think this is legal all right dr ahmad dynamic joining us live from new york thank you for. your analysis in a way and they are and i don't apologize for our viewers for the audio quality but they're well moving on now on our web site of course our to dot com we have been keeping track of the turmoil in egypt since president morsy was deposed over there feel out on you can find the time line as well as the latest pictures videos opinion and analysis to log on and to check that out. to.

well on to syria now where at least fifty prisoners have allegedly been executed by rebel forces without trial now this comes as the leaders of the syrian national coalition that meet with the u.n. security council and agree agree to participate in geneva peace conference but there are reports on a number of the preconditions still have to be minutes before any such meeting can take place the delegation representing the syrian opposition that is visiting new york promised to attend the geneva two meeting it seems as though the delegation has a lot of. work for it will actually arrive that this should be able to meeting it
12:13 am
seems as though they want to make sure that syrian president bashar al assad has no authority following the geneva two meeting and another precondition possibly that we could that was spoken about by the by the french envoy was the fact that once the transitional government is established that that transitional government would have full authority over the security of the military in syria as russian ambassador to the u.n. really underscored here is that all this talk of prevent the geneva two meeting from actually moving forward and taking place i understand everybody is going to x. with the national committee with the supreme council of the kurds of syria but there is. an understanding has not yet been achieved among them to be jointly represented presented to. the syrian opposition would like to receive the weapons in arms in military aid that the obama administration recently promised to
12:14 am
provide to the rebels fighting against syrian president bashar al assad many ask why would washington be shipping more weapons and. getting the civil war because now we should point out here there's france's envoy to the u.n. i just spoke to the media and said that the vast majority of you would member. already recognize mr jarvis as the sole representative of the syrian people legally i don't know how that can happen within the un there can't be official recognition of someone that is not a head of state or without it being processed within the united nations also what some experts are questioning is the overall legitimacy of the syrian national coalition critics say the group has no power. and recognition inside of syria eugene parea member of the anti answer anti-war coalition says he believes their savior and rebels are only willing to negotiate when they have the upper hand the united states and the united kingdom france other western nations have really made
12:15 am
clear that they will only accept the fall of the side and despite the fact that they continually try to say that they're for peace negotiations it seems at every turn whether it's sending arms to the rebels whether it's sending them quote unquote non-lethal aid money in general supporting the gulf countries that are also supporting them that really all of the talk about peace is disingenuous and unlike russia and other countries they seem very. determined to push forward the syrian rebels as the new leadership of the country regardless of the situation on the ground when russia in the united states were originally trying to promote the geneva two conference we saw that the syrian rebels essentially said that they had no intention of negotiating until the situation on the ground changed that is so they gave the military upper hand so from their perspective they seem only willing to negotiate if the military situation allows them to have the upper hand in negotiations but if they seem to be losing the war if it seems that support for them inside of the country is dropping all of a sudden they have no desire to negotiate and they only want to continue to push
12:16 am
war which is the subtext of this entire meeting where on the sidelines they have been pushing for more and more military aid from the united states and who are to come significantly quicker. chris update on was an analyst for the democratic strategist and i don't mean as u.s. involvement in syria will only create another iraq. there are so many factions that have so much influence with this coalition and even the assad government has brought in others outsiders if you will to sort of prop up their government that there doesn't seem to be any particular group that can claim to be in charge or one side or the other the whole situation is become balkanize the last thing people in america want is to get into another situation our rock which is very confusing we never really pick the side. to be on that seem to be the right side and ten years after our vision they're so good there doesn't seem to be any kind of coalition no around a governing body that all iraqis can agree on is as far as most americans are concerned

this is just another big mess still ahead of washington plans to tackle the anger over the ongoing hunger strike in guantanamo bay prison by sending two inmates to algeria and as we hear later in the program their future in that country may not work out for the better do you stay with us for that story also we report on how residents in venezuela are turning to so-called self-defense groups this to quell the danger of staggering street crime as the police prove to be powerless you stay with us. u.s. prosecutors have charged a group of hackers with stealing more than three hundred million dollars in what's been dubbed as america's largest cyber fraud case for russians and ukrainians allegedly spearheaded the theft and could now face decades behind bars artie's enter blake that story. we had five guys four russian nationals and one ukrainian man who over the course of around seven years were able to penetrate a number of the networks of leading financial institutions banks all sorts of
12:18 am
systems where very important information was being stored over the course for several years those men broke into the databases allegedly took a sensitive information and in the end u.s. prosecutors now say that those five men were able to compromise roughly one hundred sixty million credit cards causing upwards of three hundred million dollars of damage they were able to elude authorities for around seven or eight years now but actually masterminding this operation itself took a lot of very careful planning now all of the five men that are believed involved in this each one kind of had a separate little niche that they would specialize in for instance were experts when it came to penetrating computer networks others would go into these networks after they were compromised in mind for even more would build up very very sophisticated internet networks to be able to communicate anonymously so by having different specialists in different sectors they were all able to put the pieces together and cause millions of dollars hundreds of millions of dollars worth of

damage and affect you know people around the globe two of them were arrested one of them has since been extradited from the netherlands the other one is awaiting extradition and three of them are at large so once they are brought to the u.s. and tried the could be looking at likely decades in prison. that was unsealed thursday this week it all stems from a previous investigation that began a few years ago and did with the conviction of an american computer hacker who is currently serving several decades behind prison for a similar crime. in a washington is trying to secure cyberspace from legal access its own appetite for private data seems to be gaining momentum at the securities and exchange commission lining up monitors people's private e-mails without a warrant for more on that story our website dot com. also there you may think these. people could file a complaint for being pepper sprayed but that's not exactly how it plays out the police officer who is now demanding compensation you can learn why on our site r t

v dot com. to guantanamo bay detainees may be about to leave the infamous prison facility in cuba and sent home to algeria now the white house claims the transfer is part of the obama's plan to close the prison and algeria was chosen because he has successfully managed detainees in the past almost half of the inmates in the prison are still being held behind bars despite being cleared for release dr alan singer from hofstra university in new york says the move could be an attempt by the u.s. to break the hunger strike at the detention center. in many ways gets an act of desperation the hunger strike has embarrassed the united states all over the world
12:21 am
so they're trying to break dawn destroyed by pushing out a couple good people but these are people that are being detained without any legal justification one of the things i find so curious is that trying to get out curiously jake to the people algeria is not well noted for the due process of its courts countries with stablish legal proceedings do not want to touch this just saying states and is saying to all by love you make this mess you're stuck with it i am an expert on the jury in prison system but i had to go to jail i think i'd much rather go to as we know denmark the conditions in general in algeria are very very harsh i mean i think they're looking to send people to a of our in this fate i don't see this is any kind of due process of any kind of outcome i just think they're trying to get out of something they created fifty in a world orthodox church delegations are in ukraine's capital kiev to follow the thing

and has crossed a symbolic relic that united the nations of ancient russia president vladimir putin will need to meet the leaders of ukraine and belarus during the festivities not the visit does come at a time when can't stand at a crossroads between russia and europe. current again seems to be facing a choice either siding with moscow with which its political cultural and economic ties go back for centuries or to turn its back on his old relations and trying to make its way towards the european union relations which in moscow and kiev haven't been exactly seamless as of late specially over the past several years of course there was the orange revolution the recent gazprom flicks to get the raw bourses inside the country and else a brain would be a much better off staying on friendly terms with russia rather than playing a back seat role for europe. ukraine is distant destroyed for favor but relations
12:23 am
with russia for thousands of reasons suffice it to say that every third ukrainian has close relatives living in russia and although more than half of the country prefer to choose a moscow friendly course the league is moving in the opposite direction they aren't afraid of dissent because the voice of the protesters isn't the new one you believe it's a pity that at the same time moscow wants to see its next door neighbor to play a bit of a more active role in regional cooperation for example by starting by joining the customs union of which russia of course is a. player ukraine's economy is also highly hemant on russia with some seven hundred thousand ukrainians employed in russia on top of that they're all forced cultural and religious ties he have at one point being the center of the slavic lands and it was here that one thousand and twenty five years ago percy on this he was adopted and that is that religion is about are other things a force that keeps the countries close through all the trials and tribulations and

many warn that if you crane chooses to steer away from russia hoping to find a better role or a better future within the european union it risks losing not just its independence and identity as a nation. and time for a brief world update we begin in libya where a prominent political activist is killed by an unknown gunmen in the country's second largest city have been gone. most mari a lawyer and a vocal critic of the islamists was attacked as he was leaving a mosque there are also reports of other killings in libya allegedly a government official and a colonel have also been or. at least one man has died in violent protests that erupted in tunisia after the assassination of a prominent leftist politician tunisian officials have blamed al-qaeda linked extremists for the attack opposition leader mohamed brahimi who was shot dead in front of his home by two are known men in the spewing the same gun which was used

in a similar political murder back in february and the assassination has triggered mass protests across the country and the strike has been called by the main trade union body. a blast has ripped through a row of upscale bars and restaurants in the southern philippines leaving six dead twenty eight injured local police said most of the victims were attending a pharmaceutical conference now no one has claimed responsibility so far with investigators struggling to find a motive for the attack. the fate of whistleblower bradley manning is about to be decided on the seven weeks long trial comes to an end and the military judge will rule on the charges after closing arguments were heard now manning has already admitted to ten of the twenty two crimes he's accused of but not the most serious one aiding the enemy the former private faces life in prison for what is considered to be the largest ever leak of secret u.s. government documents. venezuela may be seen as a safe haven for u.s.

whistleblower on the run edward snowden but for many of its citizens the country is far from safe with street crime and robberies reaching record highs and residents even forming armed self-defense groups to protect themselves artists are still has a story. election campaign may have been based on the lead this is legacy but if there's one a major issue as well as a new president can be credited for bringing to the forefront it's the country's lack of security you can be abducted even from your own home there's no safety in our country government figures show more than sixteen thousand people were killed and it is willing twenty twelve an increase of fourteen percent from the year before and a murder rate of fifty five point two per hundred thousand inhabitants one of the highest in the world making the high crime rate public enemy number one they're wrong and beats us my father was killed near his home four years ago. entered

or collectives organizations that initially emerged as left as revolutionary groups driven by ideology determined to confront society's ills today they're known either as protectors of the community or violent vigilante groups depending on whom you ask we. also known as now a senior member of the collective or. some time ago american imperialism that infiltrated latin america in venezuela in particular cause massive spread of drugs across our territory we have to combat this disease that's when the movement of power all kids even the press and they're all started we also started the model urban groups that fight drug trafficking and violence we clean up the streets so to speak. now we're here in an area called bend at the us and there are a lot of shanty towns here and it's very brutal here go chavez and also pro but it's also home to
12:28 am
a very strong leftist activism and people here tell me that they don't welcome the police they don't want to see him here because they say the police here are corrupt instead they have groups armed groups called the collective us who maintain security in this area maybe going after drug traffickers but it's widely believed that at times they were also resort to lethal means some local say however that there's no alternative for now police corruption has been so rampant that in two thousand and nine the government even admitted that twenty percent of crimes were committed by crooked cops but the quality was self-proclaimed role as protector may be challenged pushes his secure father juan plan deploying some three thousand troops into the streets of caracas. they might help the government one day become allied with local mafias on the next day mr. president chavez out of the scene is certainly going to have much greater difficulty in bringing them under the sway.

government policies and government orders he's definitely getting into very very difficult waters in there because if he sends at least forces trying to control them that will definitely create scenes of violence of those scenes of violence can turn very ugly and now with wars in the hot seat having pledged to make tackling quite a personal priority a promise will be held to by a politically divided population united by a desperate desire for peace of mind to answer cilia r.t. us. on the back of an about a half an hour on the money is up next to stay with us you're watching.
