of mossi very much supporting the military and all these actions of the security forces or meanwhile people are mourning the loss of their loved ones in the city in just a few kilometers away. at the blame game as to who is responsible for the carnage in cairo gains momentum the divisions within the country are deeper than ever and morsi activists a lot believe believe that the muslim brotherhood as exaggerating the casualty figures to convince the foreign allies that they are in need of help against military. what do you expect people who are in. the government and. all the egyptian people did not accept that. we did not accept the terrorism we did not accept the fascism we did not accept it what do you expect from losers of course they're trying to justify their trying to pull of to the to of course their supporters the united states for help. and we will never ever let anyone in

defeat in our country if they accept that the americans accept that some people will go and shoot soldiers into the pentagon we will accept there was a number of others to shoot our soldiers in the chased operations meanwhile mona al cousin is a spokesperson for the muslim brotherhood in b u k believes that the military and side of the violence by attacking those who are exercising their rights to peacefully protest. i personally do not want any violence there my family my friends everyone i love them i can hope for the they are of that exercise and i'm a just i'm excited to freedom of expression and they should be protected the military should not be on the streets the military should be back in the batiks the minister should not be interfering in politics the military this is not the old gentleman to see with all due respect to him he is an appointed minister of defense the people did not jews have a no he thinks he has given them some super constitutional powers to be able to decide what the will of the people is what has the whole world knows what the one

of the people is through the institution of democracy the crudes that is what we see that is the hard job of the people's will and the people do not want any form of violence people just want peaceful peaceful protests people want to peacefully protest peacefully demand the rights well the egyptian army has started to make good on its promise of bringing an end to what it has called terrorism in the country a large scale counter extremist operation has been launched on the sinai peninsula bordering with israel this comes amid a spike in attacks on soldiers and policemen there in the wake of morsi is ousting our middle east correspondent policy or brings us the details. what we do know is that the egyptian military has closed all interns in and out of the sinai it's launched a forty eight hour operation to deal with a sudden increase in the number of islamists operating there the information that we have is that there have been violent clashes in the area of this way it not only santa there but also in areas like elevation other villages in the surrounding area
2:06 am
these clashes between the army and extremists that have been operating there for quite some time now let me remind you that the situation in sinai has been on really ever since the overthrow of the former egyptian president hosni mubarak and since then we've witnessed an increase in these kind of attacks these kind of violent acts happening in the sinai but we're hearing from the army as that there are at least five hundred extremist militants operating in an area of four square kilometers now the army says that they are heavily armed it says that they could use civilians in those areas as human shields and at the same time the army has deployed both its if force and on the ground troops who are heavily armed in egypt the muslim brotherhood supporters are taking up arms and i'll go into the sinai where there are joining these islamist groups from the army we hearing that they are being fired on that they have been attacked by these extremist elements more

than sixty bedwyn tribes signed a memorandum that they support the egyptian army and that this is a support for the egyptian people they're trying to put some kind of order there but the situation is merely continuing to descend into chaos. will be keeping you updated on the situation in egypt right here on our team and of course for the latest developments as well as a full timeline of the events photos witness accounts and expert opinion you can log on to our website r.t.e. dot com. there's been a fresh round of diplomatic wrangling over edward snowden between russia and the united states as the world expected the fugitive whistleblower to leave a moscow airport earlier this week now the former n.s.a. contractor has been stranded in a transit zone there for a month now currently waiting for moscow's decision on his temporary asylum request artie's lindsey france recaps all the twists and turns in a snowden saga. the world's media and u.s. law enforcement may not be chasing edward snowden from country to country at this
2:08 am
point but there is plenty of chasing going on at the airport and there's no sign of it slowing down as the weeks passed the kremlin has stuck to its guns on allowing snowden to stay as long as he does not harm the united states by disclosing any more information tension mounted wednesday when reports emerge that snowden's russian advisor anatoly. was en route to share the metro airports terminal with documents allowing snowden's temporary release from the transit zone while his asylum bed is considered but he showed up toting a brown paper bag filled with nothing more than new clothes and a few copies of russian classics translated to english along with the rather dismal news for snowden the paperwork was delayed. it was in waiting mode now we can all imagine how he feels being unaware of what's ahead of him and whether he'll get a yes or no answer from the russian authorities and for me procedures can take up
2:09 am
to three months anyway he's very grateful to russia which didn't abandon him and to the people who are trying to help him needless to say snowden was nowhere in sight for the media's hungry lenses meanwhile the game of diplomatic ping pong gets better and better while russia allows snowden's remain in the transit zone the white house demands he's returned without delay the kremlin returns the volley by pointing out the absence of an extradition treaty with washington u.s. ambassador to russia then takes to twitter claiming they're not asking for extradition just to return russia points out the absence of an international law requiring a return secretary of state john kerry call snowden a traitor to his country russia states part of the reason for sheltering snowden is worried that he could face capital punishment it's then that u.s. attorney general eric holder pens a letter to russia's justice ministry no torture no execution russia points the fact that snowden has been stripped of his passport he can't travel to which. holder scrambles to offer a temporary pass for for direct travel to the secure embrace of american law
2:10 am
enforcement the kremlin is unmoved while the white house asks for clarification on snowden status i think edward snowden has really been in many ways a hero and he has sacrificed his entire future i think as an american how much it's clear he loves this country he will never again see the golden gate bridge or the blue ridge mountains or the grand canyon all the things that we americans take for granted other irons in the fire congress accelerated a bill applying sanctions to any country offering asylum to edward snowden and some hawkish senators are calling for everything from a change of venue for september's g twenty summit in st petersburg to a boycott by the u.s. olympic team of the twenty fourteen winter games in sochi outside the states there are plenty of people lining up to make sure snowden is not thrown to the washington wolves anytime soon it's important that people from whatever government can say i
2:11 am
think my government has been doing wrong and has been breaching people's human rights and i need to apply for asylum in order to be able to speak out about it is while all sides battle it out back and forth back and forth where is there squarely he's quietly hanging out in duty free or possibly thumbing through his new copy of dostoyevsky's crime and punishment back at sheremetyevo airport in moscow lindsey france r t. well despite washington's promises that snowden will not face the death penalty he would still be tried for espionage for revealing the scope and the details of america's surveillance program more now from our can in washington. by relentlessly going after whistleblowers here we picked some of the most notable ones the us government is sending a message this is what's going to happen to you if you speak out even if you think you're doing it for the public good even if the public things you did the right thing in edward snowden's case fifty five percent of americans consider him a whistleblower not
2:12 am
a traitor and yet even as many americans are thinking to snowden for greater awareness about the government's blatant snooping on millions of absolutely innocent people snowden still had to flee the country so was not to share the fate of his fellow whistleblowers had he stayed he would have been in jail facing life in prison or maybe even the death penalty the example of bradley manning is right there the twenty five year old u.s. army private bradley manning has been in custody for three years now and is facing more than one hundred fifty years in jail many leaked documents and videos that exposed war crimes committed by the u.s. the military judge has recently ruled that mending still has to face the most serious charge the charge of aiding the enemy despite many claims that he's sole intent was to make the public more aware of the cost of war the human cost and other whistleblower former cia analyst john king also thought he was doing the right thing when he spoke about the cia's torture practices and became the first government official who confirmed waterboarding at one time to get out who was the

head of the cia's counterterrorism operations in pakistan father of five kid out who is now in jail serving his two and a half years sentence former n.s.a. employees william binney and thomas drake were very close to jail time after they separately blew the whistle on the government's massive surveillance program which they saw as ineffective an illegal needless to say their careers were destroyed edward snowden's revelations of only confirmed would be drake had been saying for years but possibly unlike binney and drake snowden has also made public indisputable proof of the existence of the programs i had the chance to interview three of these men john kiriakou william binney and thomas drake they talked to me about what it's like being targeted by the u.s. government take a listen if you're in itself is control. and what people will do when they're fearful is they were be will begin to censor themselves so much of what's happening now particular my case it sent it extraordinarily chilling message that anybody i
2:14 am
was a senior executive the government had a very high position and say it sends it extraordinarily chilling message that if you speak out if you speak up we're going to hammer you and we're going to hammer you hard because look what we did to mr drake the court is supposed to protect the constitution all these all these people in government take an oath to defend the constitution and they're not living up to their oath of office i never believed i would be going to prison under a president obama never. that's been i think my biggest disappointment the classified documents then daniel ellsberg leaked four decades ago revealed that the us government had lied about the vietnam war and those revelations contributed to the erosion of public support for the war daniel ellsberg was the first whistleblower who was charged under the espionage act the government went after him with only had wiretapped him without
2:15 am
a court war and broke into his therapist's office trying to find something to discredit him with the judge dismissed all charges against ellsberg due to the gross government misconduct and illegal evidence gathering today daniel ellsberg stands in support of all these whistleblowers arguing had he been charged today he would have most probably gone to jail in washington i'm going to check out. well as always we are eager to hear your views on all the stories we cover you can log on to our website r t dot com and let us know if you think russia should grant edward snowden temporary asylum. and more news after a short break including an unconventional tactic to round up illegal immigrants the u.k. government has launched a hard hitting ad campaign that critics say intimidates illegal immigrants to turn themselves in washer report in just a few minutes time. your

government is still persisting in arming besides most people around the world would have absolutely no confidence and one argument here is that the reason the rebels have become jihadists and of accepted money due to how these fools who paid so sure is precisely because the west is not prepared to provide them with weapons. and. wealthy british soil it's time to respond. with. markets why not.

find out what's really happening to the global economy cause a report on. combat for earlier this week the syrian national council had met with the u.n. security council and had. agreed to take part in a long awaited peace conference but only if president bashar al assad agrees to a transitional government the rebel group also met with the u.s. security secretary of state this in order to urge the white house to speed up the promised arms shipments to assad forces with their own promises that the weapons would not fall into the wrong hands but the pledges come as divisions within the opposition deepen and as artie's paul scott reports the former allies may soon become sworn enemies. while the opposition are united in their desire to overthrow president bashar al assad that seems to be where their similarity ends the syrian

national coalition is the umbrella group recognized internationally as the legitimate representative of the syrian people but they don't represent all factions opposed to a saddle one group operating out of their control for example is the al qaeda linked al nusra front the coalition say they've hijacked the revolution or they've been classed by many in the west as a terrorist organization elsewhere a separate syrian group affiliated to al qaida helped facilitate a jailbreak in iraq over the weekend freeing high ranking al qaeda operatives infiltrated by foreign fighters all mysteries agenda seems separate from out of the coalition and it's even led to infighting on f.s.a. commander was killed by a rival group and the f.s.a. feel they could soon be fighting on two fronts but when we use the phrase opposition exactly who are we talking about well the coalition alone is made up of at least eleven different groups including the muslim brotherhood who have recently called on the us and the e.u.

to send arms in the battle with assad while only offering loose guarantees they won't fall into extremist hands there's also the coalition of secular and democratic syrians the syrian democratic people's party supreme council of the syrian revolution and so it goes on the disparate nature of the syrian opposition combined with the presence of islamic extremists means any nation looking to support the rebels are walking a continual tight rope with very few guarantees that any military support won't backfire and actually encourage the one thing that trying to fight elsewhere meanwhile president obama's plans to send arms to the forces fighting the assad government were condemned by some lawmakers and the united states senator rand paul claims that the white house is playing a dangerous game of double standards of assyria. as we continue to aid in armed despotic regimes in egypt we were also about to send weapons to islamic rebels in syria this is problematic on multiple levels the assad regime is no

friend of freedom or the united states but this does not mean that the enemy of our enemy is our friend there are currently seventeen different rebel groups in syria including the largest group of al nusra al nusra fighters are radical anti-american geodes and they're affiliated with al-qaeda but your politicians in washington are eager to send weapons they promise oh these weapons won't get into the hands of the enemy i don't believe it does anyone believe that how can we ask our brave young men and women to fight against al qaeda in some countries and with al qaeda in other countries. and time for a brief world update we begin in somalia in the capital of mogadishu a suicide bomber has rammed an explosive laden vehicle into the gates of the turkish embassy three people including the suspected attacker have been killed two

more wounded the radical islamist movement al shabaab has claimed responsibility for that assault. fifteen protesters have been arrested by the peruvian police after thousands rallied in the capital of lima security forces have used tear gas to disperse the mass demonstration students and human rights groups voiced their anger over the proposed education reforms and the looming cuts to state jobs. the u.k. government is stepping up its battle against illegal immigration a new initiative includes vans driving around city streets that carry posters urging immigrants to leave or face arrest but it's not the first such measure like this in fact earlier this year ministers have planned an advertising campaign to show just how bad of an idea is it in britain is highlighting the country's less than attractive side all in the hopes of scaring away on vaunted arrivals now another scheme ready to kick off within months seize those coming back from black list of countries deposits three thousand pounds security to be returned on their

departure and even if you do arrive to the u.k. legally there is the tough citizenship test that even u.k. nationals struggle to answer archie's test arcilla now looks at what's behind these initiatives. with long term unemployment in the u.k. hitting a seventeen year high long lines of job centers have become a typical and while many britons are struggling to find a job a recent report by to finish academics says that immigrants from eastern europe are seven percent more likely to be employed and this trend generally holds true in the agriculture business on this berry farm here in kent to workers spend about eight to nine hours a day picking berries in the sun in the heat it is physical work now under the seasonal agricultural workers scheme of the u.k. it's estimated that there are thousands of foreigners working on the u.k. forms. robert pascoe who runs this farm says there are between three hundred and
2:23 am
three hundred fifty immigrant workers during the harvest season mostly coming from eastern europe remaining probably in the majority we need a supply of people who come in for the summer season and that's not so popular amongst the english people because they they want continuity it's not considered to be. a profession in the same time you've got a lot of keen enthusiastic and bright eastern europeans to come for six months and we see how bright they are they enjoy doing what they're doing and wish to stay longer and of course they're becoming more permanent like a volley or maybe he's been working on this farm for nine years do you mind doing all this physical hard work and i think i'm doing that if i was moving during that i was not here i was flipping them off in back in my country the report comes on the one hand amid the government's goal of decreasing net immigration to the tens

of thousands and concerns that cheap migrant labor is decreasing local wages and on the other hand widely unpopular cuts to the u.k.'s welfare system which your work and pensions secretary says is in order to restructure the culture to discourage people from living off the dole and find work instead i think most british people on a strictly hard working and you know industrious we've also got an element it's true i think we've got an element of people don't want to work i'm not quite sure how big that he's but then you've got another problem which is the benefits trap and that's what we should be concentrating on how do we get our people back into work how do we motivate young motivated and you don't do that by bringing wives and wives of cheap labor who just get on them by the end of the year the e.u. is temporary work and travel restrictions a bulgarian rumanians will be lifted giving them the same rights to work in the u.k. as other e.u. citizens farm owners speared. this would lead to bulgarians and romanians leaving for jobs. and.

others. accessing not only jobs benefits as well. of course it's not just the brats who are unable to manage the modern job market next hour we look at how the weeks are falling victim to government budget cuts in an attempt to repay the country's debts. to stay with us more news in about a half an hour worlds apart as up next. i've talked to many times about the absurd things going on all around us like kids being thrown out of school because they had a gun that shoots bubbles or various people getting punished for their tweets and
2:26 am
facebook posts it's all really abstract it's hard to truly get angry over until you see the results or playing a stupid video game just carter sarcastically said to someone who called him crazy oh yeah i'm real messed up in the head i'm going to go shoot a bunch of kids at school l.o.l. j.k. and for this bit of sarcasm he spent quite some time awaiting trial in a texas prison not only that according to his father he was being attacked brutally on many occasions leading to both a pool concussions and black eyes and in the end he had to be thrown into solitary confinement for his own good you see this is the ugly reality of those who fall in the bad side of political correctness you know i don't talk about these stories just for fun the main thing i'd like to say is that it wasn't for some anonymous coward in canada turning him into the authorities for doing absolutely nothing this young man would not have to live with the memory and possible injuries from numerous assaults to the anonymous canadian who turned him in i sarcastically wish you a horrible fate but you probably get me arrested for it so just say that it's people

like you who allow tyranny to exist but that's just my opinion. oh no welcome to worlds apart humanitarian concerns have been thought of in syria to justify up all sorts of military actions with the distinction between combatants and civilians purposeful have learned how much more difficult has it made the provision of health to those who desperately need it while to discuss that i'm now

joined by sir john holmes for my view and merging for relief coordinator and currently the u.k. chair for the international rescue committee sorry john thank you very much for taking time to talk to us before we start i would like to remind our viewers how this conflict was and. is still being pre-trained in many of the western media. the killing of syrian citizens by their own government the people have been temperance trading and they're resisting assad and they have been slaughtered by assad for well over a year the biggest risk would be allowing the shouted us to keep on slaughtering these people you've got a dictator who is brutalizing his people using chemical weapons against innocent. surge on a dictator who is slaughtering his own people is that an accurate description of what is actually happening in syria well what is actually happening is

a very brutal civil war now between the government supporters and the rebels and their supporters and out both sides are clearly guilty of. regarding civilians as an incidental collateral damage if you like i think it's probably true to say that most of the casualties we're talking about around one hundred thousand deaths most of the casualties have been civilians and very many of them it's very hard to say how many have been killed by the the government's tactics of fighting the war by shelling and bombing civilian towns because that's where they believe the rebels are i think what's crucial in the western narrative on the syrian conflict is that the line between combatants and civilians is really really blurred and i think i would argue that it is down for political reasons because when we have quite a mother who is nursing her baby somewhere in home.
