i'm. going to screw with you in national security extremism. the world reacts to the guilty verdict handed down to us whistleblower bradley manning still facing over one hundred years in prison despite being acquitted of aiding the enemy and. still no solution in sight the u.s. sets a nine month deadline to end the palestinian israeli conflict has restarted talks give a glimmer of hope. and all four on the u.s. secretary of state's plans to visit pakistan this week are shrouded in mystery growing anger at u.s. led drone strikes.
12:01 am
thanks for tuning in this hour i'm lucy catherine of and of course you're watching our t.v. well let's get right to our top story the u.s. army whistleblower bradley manning has been found not guilty of aiding the enemy but he could still spend nearly a century and a half in prison the judge had convicted him of twenty out of twenty two counts they out up to potentially a sentence of one hundred thirty six years behind bars and the sentencing will begin later on wednesday and it could be weeks before manning learns his actual fate blake was at the proceedings. after three years of pretrial detainment and two months of testimony the court martial of private first class bradley manning is finally wrapping up in fort meade maryland on tuesday in fort meade colonel denise lynn for senator verdict and acquitted private manning of aiding the enemy the most serious of charges now government prosecutors have said that manning aided the enemy when he took classified military information and uploaded it to the website wiki leaks in turn putting it on the internet and in turn providing
12:02 am
a way for al qaeda in the arabian peninsula to access secret government files starting wednesday the court case will enter its sentencing phase and the government and defense are expected to call upwards of forty witnesses total in order to testify to the merit and intent and motive of private manning now during the last two months of testimony we've heard all sorts of stories about how private manning acted in an off of the battlefield what kind of experience he had as an army intelligence analyst however not all of those testimonies will be heard by members of the public or the press in fact or more than a dozen of the testimonies that will be entered in the court will be done so under seal those are all classified witnesses whose testimonies could harm national security if they were released earlier this year we heard from many himself how he did it and why he did it he admitted guilt in releasing more than two hundred fifty thousand state department diplomatic cables guantanamo bay detainee assessment reefs iraq war logs afghan war logs and
12:03 am
a number of other classified materials now following the judge's verdict manning could still face upwards to one hundred thirty six years in prison according to private manning himself when he went to the web site wiki leaks he did so in order to expose the rest of the world to the atrocities that he saw while serving in iraq private manning was held in pretrial detention up until earlier this year having spent more than one thousand one hundred days in military custody now that the trial approaches a conclusion however manning's fate will for once be a little bit less undecided once the judge decides how many years he will have to spend in prison. they'll finally have an answer. right so how did manning end up facing such a long sentence for the latest largest part of the security leak in u.s. history let's take a look at how the charges actually break down now we have twenty five year old was essentially acquitted of the most serious charge against him that of aiding the enemy which carried a potential life sentence but he was convicted on six counts of violating the
12:04 am
espionage act five counts of stealing government property there was also a computer fraud charge and other military infractions now each of these carries a potential ten year life term so manning sentencings hearing as you heard from andrew blake is set to begin on wednesday out of the host of charges against him and manning still faces more than one hundred years behind bars well for a closer look at how the white house has used the espionage act in its war against whistleblowers here's our account. although manning was not found guilty of aiding the enemy his still faces life in prison but the judge found him guilty of multiple violations of the espionage act the espionage act was never intended to punish whistleblowers it's a nine hundred seventeen statute for sponsorship the obama administration has already charged eight whistleblowers with espionage and yet yet even in the face of those very serious charges whistleblowers keep coming forward with revelations about the government's wrongdoings as they see that bradley manning's example didn't stop edward snowden for example from doing what he did and here's joining us
12:05 am
on the man who gave media pot for him to bradley manning's revelations here's what he said about about the verdict this is the first. against the united states it is a dangerous precedent for. national security extremism is the sort of judgment that cannot be tolerated and it must be reversed. it can never be. truly made to the public is it and the question now is to what lengths will the government go to stop the whistleblowers of the future prosecution evidence that were even claimed. as a result of the many disclosures the other victim was the u.s. government's. but the abuse of this fine young man bradley manning was never the way to restore. the bradley manning this is the world with
12:06 am
a sense of disco's. bradley manning. of course we don't want to underestimate the fact that the military judge ruled that manning was not guilty of aiding the enemy but the obama administration's treatment of whistleblowers in general has already done a great disservice to investigative journalism especially to journalists who cover matters of national security many of them say their sources have dried up people in the government are afraid to speak up in the wake of bradley manning's leaks to the government came up with the so-called insider threat program under which government employees with clearances are basically encourage the new structed to snitch on each other on top of that journalists learn that they can be targeted as accomplices of a crime for seeking classified information and publishing it as is the case with julian assange remember julian assange is not
12:07 am
a whistleblower he has provided media platform for whistleblowers and on the list and then most recently that was the fox news reporter who was investigated as an accomplice of a crime for having sought classified information so all of this is certainly sending a chilling message to the journalistic community here. now the conviction of bradley manning on espionage charges makes it likely that the u.s. will prosecute wiki leaks founder julian assange now that is according to his attorney and civil rights group and according to political analyst mark mason is in fact the man that the government could potentially go after take a look. this is really all about not only of course bradley manning but the attack on journalism and wiki leaks and julian or sorry that's the one we want to catch terror in this state court catatonic terror about wiki leaks that's really their goal really we have a massive attack on free speech and on freedom of the press this comes back to
12:08 am
the larger context here that we have the only person in the clear george bush should be sitting in acutely facing charges for look for x. . bradley manning's case was sparked major concerns in the european union with members of parliament from all over the block calling on the u.s. to free the wiki leaks whistleblower m.e.p. is from france germany arland croatia portugal sweden and spain have written an open letter to president obama and defense secretary chuck hagel now it says manning is not a traitor he has the best interests of his country in mind now his action is praised as courageous and an inspiration to other whistleblowers like edward snowden for example who had exposed the n.s.a.'s sweeping global surveillance program the e.u. representatives also expressed concern over the u.s. war on whistleblowers saying it harms democracy in both america and europe they're urging a stop to the persecution of bradley manning claiming that he has suffered too much
12:09 am
spending over three years behind bars including ten months in solitary confinement the message is manning should be freed as soon as possible and also turns out that this is how many americans feel as well more now from our thousands more in a park near. union square has been something of a stomping ground for bradley manning supporters in new york city you see over the years many rallies have been held here in honor of the army private first class intelligence analysts now manning has been found guilty of downloading and releasing confidential u.s. documents that subsequently disclosed illegal activity and climes. on the part of washington manning faces up to one hundred thirty six years in prison instead of telling you how the public is reacting to this news we're handing our microphone directly over to the citizens bradley manning didn't commit any crimes would be like is if you shot me and the camera man said hey i've got this voted you have this crime and he. you know put it out there for justice and instead of trying you
12:10 am
they try him it doesn't make any sense it whether it's mr manning or snowden. i think they're doing a good thing because the american people are basically enslaved and they're you know they're told what to do by the media and they follow orders it would appear to me that the manning verdict would be sending a message to edward snowden i'm sure he's listening. but our hands in russia don't matter you see you are. above whatever we do i want to just salute bradley manning we were in support of you if you look at the apache helicopter video which probably the most famous one. it's important for the american public at least you know what is actually going on the wall i think something needs to be done is far from a legal standpoint needs to be changed because like the american public needs to know about things like that now although manning has been acquitted of aiding the
12:11 am
enemy charges he may be punished for the rest of his life for presenting the american public with the truth reporting from new york for an up or nine our take. whether you agree with the voices from the streets of new york or not we here at our team do want to give you a chance to have your say now of course you can vote at our com some of you have already cast their ballots let's take a look at how the results have broken down so far so as you can see right here a vast majority seventy seven percent of you believe that the court decision is wrong and that private manning is a hero who should have been. found not guilty now about fifteen percent in the purple of the believe that he deserves a suspended sentence of just several years and then just four percent believe that manning should go to jail for twenty years and about the same numbers that he deserves the death penalty or life in present so it's not too late to vote head on to r.t. dot com and cast a ballot now the un had said that manning could have been tortured while awaiting
12:12 am
trial in solitary confinement for nearly a year but what you expose person kristin friends and pardon me says that the prospects of inhumane treatment and harsh sentences will not deter more whistleblowers from informing the public we have seen that despite the way that bradley manning was treated being tortured in prison in isolation in solitary confinement for almost a year it has not stopped whistleblowers and there are still brave people out there who act on their conscience and with the public interest in mind we have seen though a new era beginning and an expansion of the limits of journalism an era that began in earnest of course prior to two thousand and ten with the weeklies revelation in two thousand and ten and the world sure a new opportunity and a chance for information getting out bypassing the mainstream media who often act as lapdogs of the administration's instead of being the watchdogs they should be.
12:13 am
but the general counsel of the national whistleblowing center doesn't agree with that assessment david call it p. and o. says the government agencies are now on the lookout for was a blowers which means they'll have a hard time revealing information to the public. there over reaction to the bradley manning case has been just to clamp down on all types of whistle blowing and that that's unfortunate there have been some advance moments in the law in the non national security or intelligence area but that's being drug war if by the overreaction to this and also there's been an attack on the media there has been a chilling effect in the united states on whistleblowers as a result of the government's overreaction to this case and that has been throughout the federal government not just in the intelligence community but all government agencies have been faced with a crackdown on whistleblowers because the obama administration sent out
12:14 am
a warning to all agencies to be on the lookout for leakers and to identify the leakers before they happen in response to the manning case where manning now knows the extent of his temple jail time and the sentencing is set to begin at about thirteen thirty g.m.t. make sure you're tuned into our team because we'll have all the latest from those proceedings at ford meade maryland. for me this is similar to a child surgery in the. first part is. sick james multiply here each day. it's very profitable to invest in colombia with the very profit of the it is

i've never heard of such a case as ours were so much money and gold has stood for so many years. for all the gold in colombia on our t.v. . israel and palestinian negotiators have agreed it that they re launched peace talks with and what the next round shifting from washington back to the region in about two weeks with no compromise. on the horizon they still have major disagreements on issues including borders and security washington says the goal is to reach a final status agreement with the nine months there are hopes that the so-called two state solution will allow israel to coexist peacefully alongside a new palestinian state but the burning problem continues to be israeli settlement expansion the status of jerusalem and the fate of refugees the palestinian people also want israel to return the territories seized since one thousand nine hundred sixty seven artie's policy or has the story of one arab minority fighting for equal

rights in israel each weekend israelis flock to this truce village on the top of mount carmel the shops are busy the restaurants food and the office flow as freely as the wine breeze very good restaurants here in the area it's very welcoming if you like to be a lot of the love of the drinks and it's great to make you feel really comfortable to twelve thousand inhabitants of a sphere village have opened their doors to tourists it's a way of bringing in cash while preserving the traditional druze lifestyle kamel owns a popular cafe there would not be out of place in tel aviv or any other israeli jewish city. the people who come here usually look for something with center something they can only find within the drews community what they don't look for and don't see is something just as authentic a community floundering on to a lack of basic necessities the druze are in arabic speaking people who follow an offshoot of islam they hold a distant place in israeli society as the only major non jewish community whose

majority of members are drafted into the israeli army. told has lived here for twenty years his home still has no electricity and only three years ago did he get running water i served in the army my kids will serve as well will live in israel but we don't receive what the israelis are getting what i don't know why we don't ask for special privileges just electricity to send arab villages have always received less funding than jewish areas resulting in poor quality of education in arab schools and weak infrastructure and social services so. our relationship with the jewish communities around us is perfectly fine no problem but our relationship with the israeli establishment is different we plan for the degrees people are not with a group of people we have difficulties on many levels first of all getting budgets approved for planning and then the planning itself and. most of these radios who visit here are bolivia's to the problems and even those who know prefer to look the

be in the middle. the u.s. secretary of state john kerry is set to visit pakistan this week but the meeting with the country's new government is shrouded in uncertainty with pakistani officials condemning it cia drone strikes that continue to be carried out on their soil now some have claimed that rather than destroying the militant groups the unmanned attacks actually feed the extremist ranks earlier my colleague kevin owen spoke to us foreign policy analyst fred brand from pardon me about how the strikes are affecting politics and peace in the region. key himself just two years ago when he was the head of the senate foreign relations committee correctly that afghanistan is a sideshow and of the main of which is pakistan so he understands the importance of having good relations with pakistan and the first step to doing that is to end the drone strikes mediately because they've turned eighty percent of the population
12:22 am
against the united states they strengthen the pakistan taliban and they've made it impossible for the us to cooperate with the pakistani government and safe and it's nuclear weapons he did touch on it just now i just want you to elaborate on it a bit more you said how much the population i guess naturally are against it more and more then i guess it's driving a maybe into the hands of terrorists the pakistani taliban were far weaker in two thousand and three than they are today as a result of our drone strikes of we've put tens of thousands of people into the pakistani taliban and strengthen them and the pakistani government has not shown it so that you would be capable of controlling them several dozen u.s. national security experts have said very clear terms that these drone strikes are not harming the pakistani taliban but actually helping them recruit members this is a strategic catastrophe without power alone american history and now

a time for our world update we began and more protesters have riot at the end of the monarchy harsh crackdown on demonstrators the country's king has demanded the rapid implementation of a law prosecuting those who take part in anti-government rallies as terrorists lawmakers also voted to ban all protests in the capital with a mass rally planned for next month. crowds have gathered in london protesting against more slashes to public spending this time for legal aid solicitors will now receive a fixed fee for each case they represent rather than payment for the work they put in a move has stoked fears that defense lawyers will now be pushing clients to plead guilty for the sake of finances rather than justice. and a three year old girl has been killed and scores wounded in a major water pipe burst flooding an entire neighborhood in the brazilian pardon me city of narrow the rupture swept away trees and cars while two hundred homes were
