this is why you should. only. the world reacts to the guilty verdict handed down to us bradley manning still facing over one hundred years in prison despite being acquitted of aiding the enemy . so little solution in sight such a nine month deadline to end the israeli palestinian conflict has restarted talks give a glimmer of hope. for on the u.s. secretary of state's visit to pakistan this week is shrouded in mystery and. anger at american drone strikes.
1:01 am
thanks for joining in this hour i'm lucy catherine of feel watching our team well on to our top story now the u.s. army whistleblower bradley manning has been found not guilty of aiding the enemy and you could still spend nearly a century and a half in prison the judge convicted him of twenty out of twenty two counts and that could land him behind bars for up to one hundred and thirty six years sentencing will begin later on wednesday and it could be weeks before manning learns his fate blake was at the proceedings. after three years of pretrial detainment and two months of testimony the court martial of private first class bradley manning is finally wrapping up in fort meade maryland starting wednesday the court case will enter its sentencing phase and the government and defense are expected to call upwards of forty witnesses total in order to testify to the merit and intent and motive of private manning now during the last two months of testimony we've heard all sorts of stories about how private manning acted in an off of the battlefield what kind of experience he had as an army intelligence
1:02 am
analyst however not all of those testimonies will be heard by members of the public or the press in fact or more than a dozen of the testimonies that will be entered in the court will be done so under seal those are all classified witnesses whose testimonies could harm national security if they were released earlier this year we heard from manning himself how he did it and why he did it he admitted guilt in releasing more than two hundred fifty thousand state department diplomatic cables guantanamo bay detainee assessment reaves iraq war logs afghan war logs and a number of other classified materials according to private manning himself when he went to the web site wiki leaks he did so in order to expose the rest of the world to the atrocities that he saw while serving in iraq private manning was held in pretrial detention up until earlier this year and he spent more than one thousand one hundred days in military custody now that the trial approaches a conclusion however manning's fate will for once be a little bit less undecided once the judge decides how many years he will have to
1:03 am
spend in prison they'll finally have an answer. let's take a look at how the charges against bradley manning actually break down now the twenty five year old was acquitted of the most serious charge against him that of aiding the enemy which carried a potential life sentence but manning was convicted on six counts of violating the espionage act five counts of stealing government property there was also a computer fraud charge and other military infractions each of which carries a potential ten year jail term now as we heard earlier manning's sentencing hearing is set to begin at wednesday add up the host of charges against him and manning still faces more than one hundred years behind bars well for a closer look at how the white house has used the espionage act in its war against whistleblowers here's arties going to check out. the espionage act was never intended to punish whistleblowers it's a nine hundred seventeen statute for spies but the obama administration has already charged eight whistleblowers with espionage and here's doing all songe the man who

gave media pot for bradley manning's revelations here's what he said about about the verdict this is the first. conviction against was a low united states it is a dangerous precedent and an example of national security extremism is a shortsighted judgment that cannot be tolerated and it must be reversed it can never be taken very true information to the public is it's beyond and yet yet even in the face of those very serious charges whistleblowers keep coming forward with revelations about the government's wrongdoings as they see that bradley manning's example didn't stop edward snowden for example from doing what he did and the question now is to what lengths will the government go to stop the whistleblowers of the future the prosecution did not provide evidence that or even claim that a single person came home as a result of the mammies disclosures the only victim was the u.s.
1:05 am
government's problems but the abuse of this fine young man bradley manning was never the way to restore rather the use of bradley manning has left the world with a sense discussed how the obama administration has formed. its attacks on bradley manning not a sign of strength from a sign of weakness of course we don't want to underestimate the fact that the military judge ruled that manning was not guilty of aiding the enemy but the obama administration's treatment of whistleblowers in general has already done a great disservice to investigative journalism especially to journalists who cover matters of national security many of them saying their sources have dried out people in the government are afraid to speak out in the wake. bradley manning's leaks to the government came up with the so-called insider threat program under which government employees with clearances are basically encouraged and instructed
1:06 am
to snitch on each other on top of that journalists learned that they can be targeted as accomplices of a crime for seeking classified information and publishing it as is the case with julian assange remember julian assange is not a whistleblower he has provided media platform for whistleblowers and nonetheless and then most recently that was the fox news reporter who was investigated as an accomplice of a crime for having sought a classified information so all of this is certainly sending a chilling message to the journalistic community here. now bradley manning's asking conviction makes it likely that the u.s. will prosecute a wiki leaks founder julian assange now that is according to his attorney and some civil rights groups political analyst mark mason that weighs in this is really all about not only of course bradley manning but the attack on journalism and wiki leaks and julian or sarge that's the one they want to catch they're in a state court catatonic terror about wiki leaks that's really their goal really we
1:07 am
have a massive attack on free speech and on freedom of the press this comes back to the daily larger context here that we have the only person in the court george bush should be sitting in a court room facing charges for war crimes. bradley manning's case has sparked major concerns in the european union with m.p.'s from all over the block calling on the us to free the whistleblower now i mean he's from france germany ireland croatia portugal spain and sweden have written a letter an open letter to president obama and defense secretary chuck hagel now it says manning is not a traitor he had the best interests of his country and mind there it is right there now the e.u. representatives had also expressed concern over the u.s. war against whistleblowers saying that it harms democracy both in america as well as in europe now they are urging their urgent
1:08 am
a stop to the persecution of bradley manning claiming that he has suffered too much spending over three years behind bars including ten months in solitary confinement the message essentially is bradley manning should be freed a soon as possible and that's the view of some americans as artie's marine a partner i found out. union square has been something of a stomping ground for bradley manning supporters in new york city you see over the years many rallies have been held here in honor of the army private first class intelligence analyst now manning has been found guilty of downloading and releasing confidential u.s. documents that subsequently disclosed illegal activity and crimes on the part of washington manning faces up to one hundred thirty six years in prison instead of telling you how the public is reacting to this news we're handing our microphone directly over to the citizens bradley manning didn't commit any crimes would be like is if you shot me and the camera man said hey i've got this footage of this
1:09 am
crime and he. you know put it out there for justice and instead of trying you they try him and it doesn't make any sense it whether it's mr manning or snowden. i think they're doing a good thing because the american people are basically enslaved and they're you know they're told what to do by the media and they follow orders it would appear to me that the manning verdict would be sending a message to edward snowden i'm sure he's listening. but our hands in russia matter you. abide by whatever we do i want to just salute bradley manning we were a supporter you if you look at the apache helicopter video which probably the most famous one. it's important for the american public at least you know what is actually going on the wall i think something needs to be done is far from a legal standpoint needs to be changed because like the american public needs to
1:10 am
know about things like that now although manning has been acquitted of aiding the enemy charges he may be punished for the rest of his life for presenting the american public with the truth reporting from new york for an up or nine our take. whether you agree with the voices from the streets of new york or not we here at r t want to give you a chance to have your say on the case of course you can vote at our dot com on our web site some of you have already cast their ballots let's take a look at how that's broken down now as you can see seventy seven percent almost on a fact it is a giant majority here you guys believe that the court decision is wrong and that private manning is in fact a hero who should not have been found guilty fifteen percent of you believe that he deserves a suspended sentence of several years just four percent right there believe that madam should go to jail for twenty years about the same numbers that he deserves the death penalty or life in prison so it's not too late to vote log onto our to dot com and cast your ballot the u.n. said that manning could have been tortured while awaiting trial in solitary
1:11 am
confinement for nearly a year but we can leaks spokesman kristen robinson says the prospects of inhumane treatment and harsh sentences will not deter future whistleblowers we have seen that despite the way that bradley manning was treated being tortured in prison in isolation in solitary confinement for almost a year it has not stopped whistleblowers and there are still brave people out there who act on their conscience and with the public interest in mind we have seen though a new era beginning and an expansion of the limits of journalism an era that began in earnest of course prior to two thousand and ten with the weeklies revelation in two thousand and ten and the world sure a new opportunity and a chance for information getting out bypassing the mainstream media who often act as lapdogs of the administration's instead of being the watchdogs they should be
1:12 am
but the general counsel at the national whistleblowing center doesn't agree with that assessment david called the tino pardon me says the government agencies are now on the lookout for whistleblowers which means they'll have a harder time revealing info to the public. there over reaction to the bradley manning case has been just to clamp down on all types of whistle blowing and that that's unfortunate there have been some advance moments in the law in the non national security or intelligence area but that's being to war if by the overreaction to this and also there's been an attack on the media there has been a chilling effect in the united states on whistleblowers as a result of the government's overreaction to this case and that has been throughout the federal government not just in the intelligence community but all government agencies have been faced with a crackdown on whistleblowers because the obama administration sent out
1:13 am
a warning to all agencies to be on the lookout for leakers and to identify the leakers before they happen in response to the manning case. now manning sentence hearing is set to begin at thirteen thirty g.m.t. you do make sure to watch our team because we will of course have all the latest from those proceedings at fort meade maryland. or maybe this is similar to a shuttle surgery i'm. sorry every night. we are busy a little problem. because no one thought to drink. other

israel and palestinian negotiators have agreed that the relaunched peace talks will shift washington back to the region in two weeks' time but there's no compromise on the horizon just yet. the two sides still have major disagreements on a number of issues including borders as well as security and washington says the goal is to reach a final status agreement with the nine months there are hopes that the so-called two state solution will allow israel to exist peacefully alongside a new palestinian state but the burning problem to me is to be israeli settlement expansion the status of jerusalem and the fate of refugees the palestinian people also want israel to return the territories seized since one thousand sixty seven balls they are has the story of one arab minority fighting for equal rights in israel. each weekend israelis flock to this truce village on the top of mount carmel the shops are busy the restaurants food and the laughs flow as freely as the wine there is very good restaurants here in the area it's very welcoming if you

like to give you a lot of drinks. to make you feel really comfortable twelve thousand inhabitants of a sphere village have opened their doors to tourists it's a way of bringing in cash while preserving the traditional druze lifestyle. kamel owns a popular cafe there would not be out of place in tel aviv or any other israeli jewish city. the people who come here usually look for something with center something they can only find within the drews community and what they don't look for and don't see is something just as authentic a community floundering on to a lack of basic necessities to do so in arabic speaking people who follow an offshoot of islam they hold a distinct place in israeli society as the only major non jewish community whose majority of members are drafted into the israeli army. old has lived here for twenty years is home still has no electricity and only three years ago did he get running water i served in the army my kids will serve as well will live in israel
1:17 am
but we don't receive what that is really as are getting what i don't know why we don't ask for special privileges just electricity to send our villages have always received this funding in jewish areas resulting in poor quality of education in arab schools and weak infrastructure and social services so. our relationship with the jewish communities around us is perfectly fine no problem but our relationship with the israel establishment is different we plan for a good reason people are not with a group of people we have difficulties on many levels first of all getting budgets approved for planning and then the planning itself and. most of these raids who visit here are bolivia's to the problems and even those who know prefer to look the other way i haven't heard on this i myself don't know about it i read that there was some problem was regarding some of the just feel i but i don't know. israeli

government really tried to. yeah i heard about it and the problem. a lot of problems. sewage and electricity. trouble building the limited space in building but it's not only about turning the other cheek and choosing not to see there are israelis i've spoken to who feel nothing about acting racist slurs about arabs and in eating and they restaurants but getting them to admit it on camera is almost impossible. i mean the problem is not on my side i know the language and they don't understand mine and i served in the military i understand them but they sometimes come with certain prejudices about the druze and we surprise them by how alike we are. not enough and like it seems to stop them living in very different worlds policy r.t. is fear village in northern israel. lots more for you on our website r.t. dot com including an entire village which faces the full force of mother nature as

pakistani officials condemning cia spy drone strikes that continue to be carried out on their soil now some have claimed that rather than destroying militant groups be unmanned attacks actually feed extremists tranks earlier my colleague kevin allen spoke to us foreign policy analyst friend fred graham friend brand man about kerry's visit and how drawn politics are affecting the region. he himself just two years ago when he was the head of the senate foreign relations committee correctly that. was the slow churro into the main of which is political so he understands the importance of having good relations with pakistan and the first step to doing that is to end the drone strikes mediately because they've truly of the population against the united states strengthen the pakistan until it been made it impossible for us to cooperate with authorities. the government and safety and its nuclear weapons we did touch on it just now i just want you to elaborate on it
1:21 am
a bit more you said how much the population i guess naturally are against it more and more then i guess it's driving a maybe into the hands of terrorists the pakistani taliban were far weaker in two thousand and three than they are today as a result of our drone strikes of we've put tens of thousands of people into the pakistani taliban and strengthen them and the pakistani government has not shown itself particularly capable of controlling them several dozen u.s. national security experts have said in very clear terms that these drone strikes are not harming the pakistani taliban but actually helping them recruit members this is a strategic catastrophe without power alone american history of. and now to other news making headlines around the world beginning and protesters are right response from owner to his harsh crackdown on demonstrations the country's king has demanded
