tv Larry King Now RT August 9, 2013 9:00pm-9:31pm EDT
9:00 pm
today on larry king now the stars of one life to live on the shoulder coming back after cancellation prospect park very smartly said no this is not an end and we need to put this back on television and our fans were very very happy on their carriages crazy's story lines my twin sister from different fathers and allie have to think about how she has part of my liver problem plus i was i was fired from saved by the bell you know what a lousy actor you have to be to be fired preceded by the bell slapping again i just want to see me get slammed. it's all ahead on larry king now. today we're talking with the cast of one life to live who have some fun stories to
9:01 pm
tell but before we get to most ought to call them blue and tug watkins i recently sat down with erika slezak and robin strasser in new york take a look at what these ladies had to say welcome to live edition of larry king now we are in new york and with his erika slezak and robin strasser they are this one of the stars two of the stars of t.v.'s longest running daytime soap one life to live that was good but this. is it enjoying an online revival joining oprah winfrey. network owning and celebrating his forty fifth anniversary is also in revival on our own special channel hulu my guests the two of the show's emmy winning leaving ladies robin and erica erica is the daughter of walter sleighs or how long were you on the show. how long was i on the show on and off for about thirty years erica is the champion now own almost forty one years on we went off
9:02 pm
the air and now back i started when i was a child i was twenty four years old and my father said this is a great job don't ever give it up and i took his advice what was your character. my character is a recidivist in title edge and i say that. and i think that is a compliment at the office and i'm not too bad in person. they revived to see you doing new ones and the not shoes show you know it's all new episodes we pick up just a few months after we went off the air on television and we picked up again in the middle of our we are a long standing enemies on the show now you do it for own over who or how does it work we do a production company is prospect park we are on hulu and own has just picked us up for a ten week episode over the ten week arc over the summer and we'll see how that goes
9:03 pm
if oprah would like to keep us i'm sure we'd like to stay although she passed up the opportunity to own a national brands yes. oh stop it that i said i was going to try not to embarrass you or mr he's not my citing oh that's our friend who was a fan of the show yes. i think so it's a good and how's it doing it's doing unbelievably well we are number one on hulu all my children and one life to live we're both cancelled on the same day and both revived on the same day and we are currently number one and number two on hulu everything explained first was ignored. somebody somebody meet in creech is error in thinking stuff here did they tell you why. we were canceled because the whole genre of daytime television was sort is sort of coming to an
9:04 pm
end and it is very sad they felt it was no and so prospect park very smartly said no this is not an end we need to put this back on television and our fans were very very happy and they're back the fans fought hard to get it back that they were going to be as endless in the best possible way what is the drama in a synopsis form of one life to live. oh my goodness it is a town with all the various components that make up the world and all the problems that make up all the problems of the world and everything happens to somebody in that town at least once a day it's real people dealing with most of the time real situations does it get to do to modernize that we get to yes we go again. agnes nixon who created the show in one nine hundred sixty eight or one of the it was she is unbelievable but from day one she had she only dealt with current issues in the very beginning she had you
9:05 pm
know racial mixed marriages and she had drug problems and she had everything that was current and the show has continued along the way that she took on homophobia and bullying dad breast cancer awareness and the right side shows now are i think you were leading us towards that they are edge here they are more contemporary and there are story lines that involve very young people and they embrace the fact they had eric and i as vicki and dorian come with a history that fans are also attached to you two rivals oh yeah. what's your but there was a story your character is. i am. the third actress to play the part ok and when i left they brought in another actress so and the third in the fifth story but for reasons that made me very fortunate they always let me have you know my
9:06 pm
lead i they gave me some permission to put my finger prints on the part and i loved the character who is she she's she somebody wants badly she's always hungry she married as she tried and it's when she's not good at relationships she just isn't and i am going to fight she said she wants everything everything that vicki stands for she wants the community's approval she wants. she's as nice sort of a fortress and during this the loose cannon vicki is was the central character from day one and she's the daughter of a very wealthy publisher will marry and many times yes many times if you're on a daytime show you're married. and her one difficulty is that her father was a pedophile and abused her and so she has seven personalities but that's beside the present and one of the title me. initially the title of the show is between heaven
9:07 pm
and hell and i guess in one thousand sixty eight they decide that you can really say shouldn't say hell on television and she changed it to one life to live and it sort of was the thing the undercurrent underlying theme of the show you that day one no no i joined in one thousand seventy one two and a half years into it and you joined one and one nine hundred seventy nine. the character had been there before and from day one there was a rivalry and it just got better and they killed people off and so it's clear yes times bring them back i'm going on back with others. you know there was a very frasier soap dish soap to warrant it was already in you know as this stoical was looking to go burke said how can i bring him back he had no head and they said so back on you know he was i'm great we're never really did he it's he's awesome too yes but in daytime you never really dead even if they find the body you know and it was it was playing somebody all the time he was going to do become hurt no
9:08 pm
no no no but the challenge of it is to keep it fresh every day but the glory of it is that every day you do something different so it's like living your own life you never quite sure what's going to happen tomorrow you can't get stale because it's new every single day and because it's a continuing drama if you feel you messed up or didn't do your best you can bring your a game the next day. and that's cool there's a tendency to laugh at them like a soap dish is the movie yet to left the plots oh yes oh my goodness yes. we've had she doing this is the first she didn't you tell us. never had to go underground. she never had to live six weeks underground in an underground city if. you know that yes some of the plots are a little silly but it's ok it's a flight of fancy yes and it's suspend your disbelief but i'm going to argue with
9:09 pm
him for here in front of larry can't what is whatever it was you were laughing at you were that out of home came to the steel plate and you gave it the dedication that it brought up in the studio no no this one no no you know as an actor it's your job to portray what's on the page and you do that to the best of your ability every single day as ridiculous as it sometimes feels let you have the respect you have to sell it do you watch yourself very rarely because i'm not nice to myself you know and people don't support your work i avoid them so why we. don't win yeah yeah and good dogs thank you thank you thank you so nice to meet you there is there's a robin strasser the stars of one life to live it's on hulu and on oprah winfrey's own network we are back now with three of the show's most intriguing actors melissa archer plays the scheming natalie buchanan banks corbin bleu one of the newest
9:10 pm
actors to join the show portrays reporter jeffrey king and talk watkins has kept us laughing as david vickers since one thousand nine hundred ninety four we had the pleasure speaking with erica and robin why are they so loved. they're both fantastic and robin has this way about her will you work with that the most but she's hilarious she comes up with so many things to do for dorian she's so she's so into dorian and erica i mean like i can't say enough good things about i think it's a classic combination you've got the good witch and you've got the bad guy is just going to say every time there was remind me of glenda and brad that you know every single day it's more fun to be married to the bad which. was you've been three times you've held new to this show are you brand new this is the very first time i've ever been on the show what's it like to come into a set cast well it's not even just the set cast as much as just this medium of soap opera i've never done so before never sent it on television and so it's
9:11 pm
a very long process it's it's just that there's a lot of material per day that i've never dealt with before when you were has that . the day of i usually i mean pretty much most of us will either work on dialogue the night before or some of the day of because there is just so much material you just have to learn it you've been with the show since ninety nine before talk because david evolved a lot or they were served up being a cool mysterious con man which i was very unremarkable acclaim for about a year and then one day i fell down the stairs by accident everybody laughed at me i was humiliated and that's when i realized david isn't a cool mysterious con man he thinks he's a cool mysterious con and so that's when the ship slowly started turning and you love to show him come back right do they write you out or do you leave your desire to leave well back and we did it on that work or we would sign up on contract for extended periods of time and then i would want to go away and do other things and.
9:12 pm
i was in jail in morocco for a number of years i was buried alive any number of killed you and brought you back yeah that's not unheard of in the lead on soap still but yes we do and melissa you you joined the show twelve years ago yet it doesn't one did you. do you ever think you'd still be portraying not lee buchanan you know it's so funny and you don't go into most the time interacting jobs expecting to have it for twelve years so now i definitely i definitely don't and i'm very fortunate i have now you're on the high school musical right how many years you do it was from two thousand and five to say two thousand and eight the fans followed you to one life to live they have they have that's the great part about the fans of high school musical is they were young when it started they were all about thirteen fourteen you get to sing or dance in the school no i want to be doing don't go away more with melissa call them then talk.
9:13 pm
here is mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that we americans call i don't know. i'm sorry i'm just a guy who cares an awful lot like you sir are you know what kind of money here is still a good no one in the usa to defeat terrorism the only liberal and the christian. can see your beliefs about it's. going to look for you to distract us from what you and i should care about because there are profit driven industry that sells us and facials that garbage he calls it breaking news i'm abby martin and we're going to break this that.
9:14 pm
wealthy british style is not. the time to write for accurate out of. their private. markets why not. come to find out what's really happening to the global economy with max cons or for a no holds barred look at the global financial headlines tune into kinds a report on our. back with melissa called in the targets of a description of each of your cowardice who are you oh boy well i was bad and then i became really really good and now i think i'm a nice mixture of
9:15 pm
a little bad little good when they change you how do they keep that. the fans keeping stay with it well i can speak for mine in particular i think it was about a redeeming thing because she was behaving so badly in order to get the audience to want her to stay they had to redeem her and then see you sometimes go through this really long process of redemption and you become really good and then they can bring back the feistiest what about you know tara is a by the way is a different on hulu. with the characters not so much different i play an idiot who thinks he's a genius so there's a little bit of inspector crusoe there's a lot of kevin kline from a fish called wanda he's my favorite actor and so i model a lot of stuff after what i think he might do the thing that's different about what we do on hulu is it's faster paced the sets are new all the writers the producers are new so there's a there's a there's a fresh take to it and the thing that that has stayed true is the characters the
9:16 pm
characters are still there that have been there for some of some of us decades some of us knew so but but on hulu i think we have a fresh new take on it it's it's only half an hour as opposed to an hour and i think it moves it moves at a faster pace korbel who is ok one of the great parts about being the new guys that i there is in endless world of possibilities where jeffrey is going to be going so what does he know as of now he's a reporter he's a very hard working guy he wants to please erica's these x. character because he can but we're going to see a change in his arc as it's come about well it's does this point when you're a regular on the soap does it prevent the work. interestingly enough before the way we were doing it on network television it did sometimes hinder work because you're working so much with the way we're doing it with this shooting schedule that we have now it actually is kind of nice because you you can do other
9:17 pm
stuff do you do theater i haven't done theater in of really really long time done a few films in fact i'm going to plug one west and it's going to be screaming on august sixth at the arena cinema hollywood and sitting in the movie west and west end who plays i play lauren which allowed you get to do actual work i don't do background work any longer. i have been fortunate i think soaps are smart about. characters from the top three go away and do other things i got to go work on desperate housewives for about five years and i was still coming back during hiatus and working on one life to live and it helps because when you put us out there on other projects it brings in more viewers to come back to the program get the word that the show is going but. i think i heard of america sleighs actually sent me an email saying you think about coming back to work and i thought is she having a lemonade stand or something she's helped with so i heard it just as
9:18 pm
a rumor and then about a week after that i got a call from someone who could actually offer me the job after erica probably could offer me the take. so i heard it through an email from america where do you shoot. stamford connecticut so you're in no way just some i guess is the way it is in go back we have a real summer break it's the first summer break that i've had since like high school or college words it's three months long get what we want go travel get an r.v. things like that there we go back to work in september the people who love soaps love them and the my mother used to just entranced with what did she watch everything you say i want to watch my stories. set up with the right accent do they get to believe you if they meet you and live a real life do they believe you are the character some of them yes like to get angry at you when you're a bitch right off right it's not so good when you're
9:19 pm
a bad guy because they treat you as if you're a bad person i got up to the ground at a flea market in the york city once saying you know alone and i said ok oh yeah i'm looking forward to this course i'll know i'm not actually with the stuff it's coming about what's it like being in people's living rooms every day. you visit and standing around you the adopt you in the think they know you and that's really the thing is when you walk out into the street and you meet somebody they start talking you as if you are that character and the believe that they can just have conversations with you as if they talk to you every single day celebrating its forty fifth anniversary this year we will think of it before you joined it i didn't really watch a lot of time prior to getting on it so. i'd watch more mission impossible james bond type programs a big success on who really is the general tendency is that it was going the way of networks youngstown to say that it was very sad well i think what happened was soap
9:20 pm
operas didn't evolve with the rest of television and i think that's where a lot of them went away what what prospect park has done with one life to live in all my children is they really updated and they've brought it into the twenty first century when it needed to be done i think years ago and i think we're bringing in an audience now that appreciates a faster moving more topical type of story they can be overly dramatic but no horse they can but. i will i will come to that but on the the the reboot that we're doing now i feel like it's no different than any of your primetime soap operas because most of the dramatic serials on primetime are soap operas they're just not daytime and you had to do nutty storylines yes in the past definitely definitely definitely like. a look see i've been locked in a basement by my twins while my twin sister from different fathers who now we have the same potter about on she has part of my liver over i know it's your sister
9:21 pm
sorry it's her sister has part of my liver please both boys know now my turn isn't on anymore about if using you're going to get a little of his back story this is what i was not happy when i came up to the ice and i started learning all of this i'm going to where you were useless he gave you a liver and vice versa i was i was i was giving owner i was i was a donor yes but it's grown back so i can give it i can give more. to my grandmother i almost took my heart because he thought it was my sister's there's a lot of facial acting in soaps right. close ups why yes you know if you're going to give you something i'll give you some very good and we're going to react is that the idea ok you find your husband in bed with someone else great. because of all the stole all your money to pay off his bookie it's three steps to see if you can pick the three steps you thought.
9:22 pm
he was just a real good is the door of the being dead try this one for five years for five years gone by is now show us seven years. your best friend whose. hand then as it lives here in the shoes you thinking you're his enemy won't see the deal is they're all sort of the same take the piss out of how short or long a show is how quickly you do it can go or go if. you find out that your mother is just sister. i think it actually happened to you didn't keep track you probably. always remind me of that that friends up with so that you were joey does the the smell the fart that's what it is it's the smell the fart larry would you be willing to give us i'm sorry finish but no those are some of our you that's what i was that no. no i wouldn't want there is love you are the way i do you open the door expecting to see your wife in you see. your long lost father who you thought was
9:23 pm
killed in automobiles accident. ok that was good but i have a few notes let's see if we can if we can take that it works a little invest a little bit more and invest invest a little more and in it and make it shorter that's it that right there done it so and so's we have to take our clothes off quite a bit and the love scenes are just walking around larry like you take a shower. i can't get the my guitar. or else oh you slap each other ought rather than joe's oh you slap him ok. but it yeah. well no thank you i do see him yeah i receive the punch a lot now we have not rehearsed this one of the things because they're a stunt man or are you. this is this a stunt pay we get paid more for this i'm not ready for it ok ok how are you going to punch me. i'll tell you a slap fight. i usually win
9:24 pm
a slap ok we have the social media questions eva claw ass melissa are you open to a recasting of the character john mcbean since michael easton won't be returning if that's where they want to go in the direction of the storyline absolutely i mean i think that at this point. you know if that's if that's something they're going to write in and it'll be really good why not able also wants to know the film in connecticut as inconvenient for the cast will i'm i'm a new father of seven month old twins and my home is in los angeles so the answer that is yes it is inconvenient but that's where the job is and dads need to make money ok we lead to play a little game if you only knew whose first person you ever kissed. his name was brandon brandon how will you fifteen fifteen. well it was in school now it was oakwood apartments up and. the like well mountain area and so the oprah partners were actors stay sort of ten years old you were out
