tv Politicking with Larry King RT August 15, 2013 11:00pm-11:31pm EDT
11:00 pm
he was the libertarian party presidential candidate that ran against president obama and mitt romney former governor gary johnson has some harsh words for both the president and the republican party. also actor and political activist james duke mason who's calling for a united states boycott of the winter olympics in russia it's all next on politicking with larry king. welcome to this edition of politicking here with me is the phone in mexico governor gary johnson who ran as the two thousand and thirteen libertarian candidate and won nearly one point three million votes that's more than all the minor party presidential candidates combined he appeared and that is star of two historic
11:01 pm
debates that we conduct is great pleasure having him return to this session and our session with him you told it to tribute to forbes magazine that on election day two thousand and twelve you felt like you were let out of prison. you were in prison what did you mean garr just it was a it was a hard row it was a lot of work it turns out that over the last four years probably about ninety percent of the time that i spent ended up to be time that wasn't so productive and you know what i'm not insane so i'm not going to continue to do the same thing expecting expecting different results in never say never you think we'll ever see a minority candidate elected an r.v. party candidate well he absolutely but the but the the main ingredient to see that happen will be money so it'll be somebody like a blue mike bloomberg who can put up a billion dollars of ozone model perot some years ago exactly but i mean it it
11:02 pm
really is it's incumbent on money or do you take away from the campaign. that is not of the not a fair process that that that there are powers that be if you will that prevent everybody from having an equal shot and nobody should not everybody should have an equal shot i mean somebody lives underneath a bridge is homeless really might have great ideas but is that person going to be the next president united states but it in my case i think i have a resume that would suggest that i could do the job and do a good job two party system those sacrosanct mostly keeps itself in follow exactly the presidential debate commission presidential debate commission made up of republicans and democrats and they have no no intention whatsoever of seeing a third party be in the presidential debates i have an idea for the presidential debates by the way there were four candidates last in two thousand and twelve that had the potential of being present
11:03 pm
a united states that was myself jule styne obama and romney what about if you have the potential to be president meaning you're on the on enough state ballots to win enough electoral votes how about a requirement that those people be in the polls just in the polls that determine who gets in the debates not in the debates but just in the polls not a bad idea obama situations into the second term. well you see where you really are realize just just a continuation of the following. here's the breakdown i think when it comes to government you know larry i've been an entrepreneur my entire life i may have hired more people than all the other candidates running for president combined i mean that's my background it's really easy to hire it's extremely difficult to fire but if you don't fire it ends up to be
11:04 pm
a breakdown you go out of business and science i should've been firing people i'm saying that he has never hired people he's never fired people so hiring is really easy firing is really difficult he's not firing people that he should be and he's hiring a whole bunch of people who have never hired and fired and that ends up to be the breakdown that ends up that ends up to be the problem with the allies about oh well everything that comes out of his mouth i think is like music i like what comes out of his mouth is just that there's a complete disconnect between what he says and what's actually happening you were a republican or you think of the current state of the party well i am speaking with a broad brush stroke of course i was the libertarian nominee for president but speaking with a broad brushstroke i am fiscally conservative and i am socially tolerant i am socially accepting i think the majority of people in this country fall in that
11:05 pm
category i think republicans are being led by social conservatives. and that there's a turnoff when it comes to social and certain look you can be a social conservative but if you want to pass laws to dictate for example of a woman's right to choose i think that's why the republican party's in trouble now rand paul was very early leads current polls thing. he says that he's basically libertarian how do you assess him well that is that he's not he is a social conservative and i think when it comes to being a libertarian i think the notion of being socially tolerant socially accepting is more than half the equation when it comes to being a libertarian governor chris christie of new jersey says that rand paul's brand of libertarianism is a form of dangerous thought. it's reaction to that that that is absolutely
11:06 pm
nonsense that is nonsense when when chris christie says look i'm going to be the hawk what we're going to have is continued military intervention that i believe has resulted in hundreds of millions of enemies to this country that wouldn't otherwise exist but for our military interventions and if we're going to continue this chris christie right out of the chute says i'm going to be the hawk what does that mean he's going to he's going to continue to bomb the world we were drone strikes continue so paul is and his father in that regard with regard to military intervention yes thoughts on the revelations about the n.s.a. domestic program well i you know what nobody can relate to what that really means so america as a whole people as a whole gee i don't care if they listen to my conversations because i don't have anything to say well i think larry i think this is why we fought wars is to prevent
11:07 pm
this kind of information gathering what comes from all this information gathering we can't put our finger on anything that really affects our lives so we don't care there's this complacency i found out as a result of the n.s.a. the n.s.a. revelations that our phones if the government so chooses are open microphone turned off they are open microphones if the government so chooses to tap into that low and listen to our conversation in one nine hundred thirty seven hitler made a speech saying why be a kid if we don't have warrants if you have nothing to hide in your house and the german public bought that larry the analogy to germany pre world war two to hitler's rise of power you had a monetary collapse in germany you had you had germany was a democracy were by the way low. they point out we are not
11:08 pm
a democracy doesn't israel or democracy than we we well we are a constitutional republic were a republic were governed by laws the laws of the constitution which protect the minority in germany as you as you point out it was a democracy hitler rose to power after a monetary collapse this is what had him as graphically chosen democratically chosen the majority you know the majority rules at the cross of the minority in our case in this country's case and this is why this is the direction we're moving but we need to protect minority rights we are a country governed by laws the laws of the constitution think of russia granting asylum to miss the snowden well who else we'll see we'll see how that all plays leaving going is this an ode well on the one side that that he reveals that we have this gigantic information gathering network taking place i applaud him on that
11:09 pm
i have to believe that or we'll see how it plays out but i have a sense that he did sign a non-disclosure statement at at penalty of of probably incarceration because of the data he was dealing with and so who's to say what information he has let out and will it resulting in harm to american men and service women or american pows potentially i hope that doesn't play itself out that way but will that remains to be so obama has canceled a meeting scheduled news to putin in moscow. over many things of this in the big eight question what do you think of him canceling. well i don't i don't know what the particulars are i think when it comes to america and just the gay issue and the olympics that are coming up let's go over and let's dominate the olympics as
11:10 pm
a country that that is accepting of of of gays i so i absolutely support marriage equality i think that it's a constitutionally guaranteed rights and best way we deal with that as a country is to go over there and kick ass if you came in and come to a a little men do that you want to abolish the i.r.s. i want to reform our tax code and i've got a lot of economic free market economic advisors i'm not doing this. with this one out of what do you replace it with well so what you do is you you abolish the i.r.s. you eliminate income tax personal income tax you eliminate all existing federal tax so corporate tax and you replace it with one federal consumption tax of vast improvement over what we currently have imagine not having to deal with the i.r.s. but on the poor with that rich people don't care about
11:11 pm
a consumption tax well actually i am i'm saying let's let's as a starting point take the fair tax something that has been proposed before congress and i believe there are over a hundred twenty five congressmen and women who have signed on to this but what your point is is that a consumption tax is regressive and that is they go direct point the way that the fair tax deals with the fact that it is regressive is it gives everybody in the country a two hundred dollar a month pre-baked check so you and i everybody gets twenty four hundred dollars a year to be able to pay the fair tax up to the point of the poverty level it's like an unavoidable amount of fair tax. everybody's going to have to pay but that's how they deal with it is that the best way to deal with it let's have a debate and a discussion over best way to implement one federal consumption tax are you now the leader or the libertarian movement i would have to say because i was the
11:12 pm
libertarian nominee president i think that was kind of you know a good housekeeping seal of approval if you will when it comes to being a libertarian i do think these are those the founder of amazon i love is a libertarian though he owns the washington post i love it i just thrilled at that and i can't wait to see how this plays itself out ron paul the former congressman and former presidential candidate good guy he noted that the national conference of young americans for liberty you support him do you like him yes absolutely i'm back though to ron paul and rand paul being social conservatives. they i think they would say that these are states issues like marriage equality drug policy all the room there well i think that when it comes to marriage equality i think that it is a federal issue that it's a constitutional issue and that's one of the fundamental roles of the federal
11:13 pm
government is to enforce the constitution so the things you said there's a revolution on school campuses a nonviolent revolution of ideas that's what ron paul said you grew that i do i do kids get it and young kids very young kids get it this is not sustainable what we're doing is not sustainable and unless these issues are addressed we're going to all find ourselves without it we're going to find ourselves in a monetary collapse where the money that we have doesn't buy a thing because of the accompanying inflation that that is going to go along with the fact that we're printing money to the tune of thirty cents out of every dollar now that we're spending. during again during your drought did more than one and i have million followers on twitter facebook and google how are you using the social media connection you have well it's something that did happen if you go back four years ago you know it was it was at zero so right now who is the spokes person for
11:14 pm
these ideas who's the spokes person for genuine libertarian ideas well there are a lot out there but maybe i'm maybe i'm at the top of the heap because i was the libertarian nominee it's important issues and it is about the issues it is about that it's not about me i'm just the messenger here or there could be a lot of messengers but i find myself i find myself as one of those that are are getting listened to so it's important it's on my urine again. well we'll see we'll see but you will we thank you for governor gary johnson next the actor political activist james duke basin he is calling for united states mojtaba of the winter olympics in russia. stay with us. wealthy british. time to explain.
11:15 pm
11:16 pm
11:17 pm
duke mason he's also the son of go-go's lead singer belinda carlisle and producer morgan mason and the grandson of james and pamela mason james the incredible actor pamela one of the great hostesses of a quite a family line all right let's get right into a several new laws in russia many people all over the world concerned especially members of the l g b t community what bothers you well i think you know what we're seeing in russia is a serious violation of human rights and i think it's really important that you know we as an international community stand up and make sure that you know the russian government realizes that you know these laws cannot just be allowed to continue i mean it's a serious you know humanitarian crisis they say are you surprised that mr putin indoor social as now and i think he has a record of you know of serious human rights violations in the past and i think that you know the international community should not be stuck to that. you know
11:18 pm
these are actions that putin is taking. i must say on a personal note i know mr putin i've interviewed him twice spoken with him on the phone he has a lot of things to commend him i'm disagree with him completely on this and i'm shocked at it i'm surprised in this modern world that they would take this tough a stand were you surprised at the tough stand that they're taking well i think that i mean why now it's a bizarre thing especially when you know we see what's happening in the states with the issue of same sex marriage to marriage or me on marriage equality and equality in general and i think the main message is that you know we need to realize the thing that we need to remember is just because things are doing so well here in the states doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't more to do outside of the united states and so you know while things may be going great over here you know in russia and many countries in africa you know i mean there are serious atrocities that are
11:19 pm
taking place you are calling for the boycott of the twenty fourteen winter olympics you want to america not to send as police as we did in one nine hundred eighty when russia invaded afghanistan well you know the thing is. a boycott is just one of the few options that i think we can consider i'm in favor of action whether it's a boycott or whether it's moving the olympics to vancouver for example which is an idea that some people are presenting now or you know if we're going to go then we need to have a plan of what we're going to do once we're there about the thought is there a symbol of big of the movement is there a flag or there's a rainbow flag rainbow pen about having all the athletes wear that i think that would be a great move i mean that's actually something that frank bruni has writer of the new york times and read about as a good idea i think it would be but i think that if we're going to do that then we need to make sure that we have a plan of action in place so that you know we don't just go there and do nothing i think that that would be the worst thing we could possibly do you get a boycott petition on your website daily duke what do you accomplish with this
11:20 pm
board to petition. well you know the thing is i think that the boy competition is actually it's it's my web site but it's actually a petition that is for the white house the white white house web site has a petition area where you can go and you can ask the white house if they get over one hundred thousand signatures to respond oh i had the idea is that it goes into them the president will like you know take a definitive stand and do something about this and it also encourages the i.o.c. the international olympic committee to do something president obama is not going to meet was mr putin as planned in september you think you should be doing more the president absolutely i mean i think that you know the very least he can do is you know talk to the i.o.c. talk to other countries you know that are going to be attending the olympics and britain france spain that are all big proponents of gay rights and you know they can either you know ask the olympic committee to move it or they can get together and you know make a plan to say that once we're there we're going to you know where rainbow pens are
11:21 pm
you know they can we need to come up with a strategic plan to make sure that putin hears our message some say visibly having openly gay athletes participate is statement enough against the laws you don't think so no i mean actually that's something that a couple of openly gay athletes have suggested they've said you know i'm going to go i'm going to be myself and it's not that i think i'm in a position to tell them what to do it's just that you know i really feel that you know we're going to go we need to make sure that we do take action and we can't just you know accept we can't just say well just because we're going to be ourselves that's enough that simply isn't enough do you think openly gay athletes should fear any possible violence absolutely and i think that you know it's not just the government it's also these anti-gay thugs and gangs that have developed there as a result of the environment that has been created by the government there are gangs that are taking gay teenagers that they meet online they pretend that they're you know a potential friends or boyfriends or whatever and they lure them into these. attacks
11:22 pm
and you know in fact one kid recently got murdered or at least committed suicide as a result of you know the torture and stuff you've been through i'm someone who has never understood prejudice to you it's plain to me in your own feelings why people don't want people close to different well i think that ultimately it comes down to not understanding people i mean i think one of the reasons why we've had such a long history here of you know like a long evolution and when it comes to understanding gay people and gay rights is because americans you know in this case the russians weren't familiar with what you know gay people are really like the label any bruce used to say people have to have people to hate they have to feel superior to something that i think you know same thing happened and in fact a lot of people have made comparisons to what's happening in russia and what happened in nazi germany a lot of people are saying you know that environment of fear is a i mean it's
11:23 pm
a mode of thing let's hope it's curtailed you campaigned for obama you rate his performance i think he's done a great job i mean you know i understand that people may be frustrated that you know things haven't actually been executed as they you know as much as they would have but in terms of his vision you know in terms of what he's able to do himself you know without the help of congress it is the ideas that he has i think he is right on point and i think if he had a congress that was more. amenable to his desires and willing to hear him out i think we you know things would be going great you campaigned for hillary when she ran against obama right now lives in a do you think he'll run again absolutely as it's just a feeling you have no knowledge no i mean although i do know people who were involved with her and me know her you know her circle and i think that. the sense is that she definitely will run you came out when you were fourteen you know twenty
11:24 pm
one. in those seven years have you seen attitudes change as you love your daily life definitely i mean you know when i came out when i was fourteen i already had a pretty strong interest in politics and you know one of the considerations that i had to think about was you know if i come out would that have an impact on my future you know and you know i basically took a bet i said ok well may come out and who knows maybe things will be better in seven years or maybe they won't be and of course thank god you know i'm lucky enough that i get to live in a time where you know significant progress is taking place how did your parents react to you know coming out they were very supportive i mean you know they better not with my mom i wasn't with my dad it took them a little time but you know it turned out he was a pretty progressive guy mag knew he had been supportive of gay people but i was impressed by you know what a good father he was to me what about the gays who are also republicans do you think there's a lot of hypocrisy. i think that you know there are certain aspects of the
11:25 pm
republican party you know there are liberal republicans on toward snugger for example there ronald reagan was certainly not as conservative as the republican party is today but i think that i find it very difficult to fathom how someone could line themselves up with today's republican party and still be a proud gay person you would think would see a gay president absolutely i think you know i think that you know we have a gay senator and i think that now there is that environment where it's you know it's going to be perfectly normal pretty soon to have gay governor's gay senators and i think after that it's only a matter of time thank you very much duke thank you duke mason you can check out james duke mason's blog at de leave dash duke dot com this week on our look at inside d.c. we take you into the center of power and money in the nation's capital it used the white house a capitol hill. d.c. is a.b.c. seven w j l a reporter and anchor of washington business report rebecca cooper
11:26 pm
takes us to find the real power in d.c. where k. street hi larry welcome to case three but who am i to tell you about washington you own this. pastry it is really synonymous with the power of special interests here in washington behind those gleaming façade a lot of the highly paid lobbyists don't want to have a say in washington they don't really like to be in front of the camera in fact if they're in the news it's not a very good thing so let's see if anyone here on the street will actually get to be the lobbyist in washington looking for powerful people here in town or do you lobby and slower if you have any power and influence can speak to them or someone talks about their power and influence to share send in washington the less they actually have so you looking for him we're looking for powerful people here in iowa who people who want you to follow the money any lobbyist. do you work for any lobbyist . why are you afraid to talk to me ok he's shaking his head no that means he does
11:27 pm
not want to be on camera that means he's probably a lobbyist sir you're exactly what we're looking for people who don't want to be on camera here in washington d.c. that he perfected the art of not even looking back he's got power money larry i think i'm a lobbyist looking for lobbyists in washington know the lobbyist know how would i find one hundred bucks then ok mr scuse me sir through another powerful person if anyone special interest pays you more than six thousand dollars a year to have their interest represented by you who have to register as a lobbyist but there are lots of people here in town that do not actually call themselves lobbyists are using on powerful here in washington and it's a it's ok you're secret safe with us to tell us about some of the powerful people that come and go every day. names down to a new number of what is are they nice people sometimes they get a bad reputation yes they're nice people do so larry you know lobbyist sometimes can be called fact castle one of the reasons maybe the lobbyists have to spend a lot of time eating. history is lined with restaurants they cater to lobbyists
11:28 pm
they're constantly trying to wine and dine the ad members of congress that they want to have their hearing and their stomachs and right across this park it's called the bombay club it's one of the most powerful places to eat here in town. would you like to implement congress would you have some silly so what are you doing even if the track if you want to influence congress you have to go to some of the state places here in town i'm not doing today do that or we're done he's not going to have any influence here in the sound so larry how can you get a lobbyist well guillotine you don't need a lobbyist everyone in town wants to know you you can have all the influence without having to have a lot. thanks to my guest governor gary johnson and james duke mason thanks also the d. she's w j l a we're begging for her to look inside where the power and money are in washington that's all for this week's politics.
