the journalist who revealed the n.s.a. surveillance scandal to the world accuses the british government of intimidation and bullying after his foreigner is detained for nine hours of heathrow airport under anti-terrorism laws. passed collating us drone assaults in yemen seized furious crowds come out in protest of the deadly attacks as it's claimed the strategy is actually playing into this hands. a dally ambush on police trucks in egypt's sinai peninsula a failed jailbreak by muslim brotherhood supporters say as the number killed in the country's turmoil since wednesday to almost a thousand. and digging and to stop the drilling police make arrests as hundreds turn out to stop an energy giant fracking for fuel under the english countryside claiming it's deeply damaging to the environment.
11:01 am
what you are to come to life from moscow i'm marina josh now the journalist who broke the n.s.a. snooping scandal has accused the british authorities of attacking press freedoms after his partner was detained at his or airport for nine hours reporter glenn greenwald claims the lengthy questioning was linked to his writing and edward snowden's revelations a stance backed up by amnesty international which has branded the incident on warranted revenge artist bully boy go brings the details from london well it's been a reaction of outrage really and glenn greenwald called it a profound attack on press freedoms on the news gathering process he said that detaining is gone after nine. now is while denying him
11:02 am
a lawyer seizing large amounts of his personal possessions was clearly intended to intimidate those reporting on the n.s.a. scandal on the g.c. h.q. scandals he also mentioned that not even the mafia stoops as low as targeting family members greenwald's partner is a twenty eight year old brazilian citizen david miranda and he had been to berlin where he was visiting another guardian journalist who was also working on the n.s.a. scandal with glenn greenwald now miranda was returning from berlin to brazil on transferring through london's heathrow airport and that's where the british police stopped him detained him and told him that he would be questioned undiscovered jewel seven of the terrorism act it's extremely rare for the police to question anybody for that moxon room allocated time of nine hours but miranda was eventually released he was allowed to continue his journey back to brazil but not before the
11:03 am
police confiscated all of his electric equipment including his mobile phone his laptop memory sticks a camera d.v.d.'s and even games consoles this was however something that glenn greenwald predicted would happen although he had assumed that it would be the u.s. government that would take this sort of action let's take a listen now to what he said there are certainly. reason to think about what the u.s. government might want to do in terms of publishing me specifically for the journalism we're doing but it's not anything that's going to constrain me or deter me or any we're going to continue to report as we've been doing it's not just glenn greenwald international have called miranda's detainment on full and inexcusable from the general public there's been almost a sense of surprise at the very brazen way in which the police use this anti terror law to question and detain miranda for such a long time so
11:04 am
a lot of people waiting now for some. including the guardian's lawyer as well thousands of yemenis have gathered in the capital to protest deadly u.s. drone attacks that have killed at least forty people in the last three weeks by the outcry may be falling on deaf ears the white house is planning to accelerate the drone strikes in yemen even further despite no precise intelligence on terrorist targets there according to a washington report more on this story from our. recent research suggests that since two thousand and two was drone strikes in yemen have claimed the lives of over eight hundred seventy people ninety nine percent of those victims were killed under the obama administration thirty eight since late july alone washington claims most of them were suspected al qaeda terrorists but locals are painting a different picture it's hard to verify the exact number of civilian deaths i would most reports are often contradictory and the bodies of those killed in drone
11:05 am
strikes are sometimes too badly charred to be identified in september last year thirteen civilians were killed including women and children near the village of. yemen u.s. officials were anonymously quoted as saying their intended target was completely missed and the incident was a mistake but no official acknowledgement or apology followed here's another example this time from two thousand and eleven conflicting reports blame a drone strike for the deaths of up to fifty people including around thirty civilians after a police station fell under militants control washington maintain its stance of not commenting on individual cases all these drone strikes in yemen at least seventy nine in total under president obama are done in the name of counterterrorism fighting al qaeda is offshoot on the arabian peninsula known as a q a p but there are suggestions that such attacks combined with civilian deaths to destroy homes and crippling poverty are actually drawing people closer to something even
11:06 am
president obama acknowledges this is not to say that the risks are not real. any u.s. military action in foreign lands risks creating more enemies and impacts public opinion overseas the very precision of drone strikes and the necessary secrecy often involved in such actions can end up shielding our government from the public scrutiny that a troop deployment invites. it could also lead a president and his team to view drone strikes as a cure all for terrorism locals say is soon as the dust settles from drone attacks a.q. a.p. arrives on the scene at rebuilding homes and offering to pay funeral costs turning the u.s. policy into an ideal recruitment tool and although the strikes are conducted with the go ahead from the yemeni government every civilian death is likely to fuel resentment in the country meaning america may unintentionally be doing all kind us
11:07 am
p.r. and recruitment on their behalf. while american citizens seem to be in favor of using drones to kill suspected militants abroad recent surveys suggest sixty five percent say yes to the policy but when it comes to using drones to hunt alleged terrorists at home it's a very different story polls show less than a third supported their use foreign policy expert robert naiman believes that public opinion of what shift if washington lifted the veil of secrecy we should all be troubled about a secret war that's conducted according to secret law the obama administration refuses to disclose the legal memos purporting to explain why the policy is legal and constitutional american people aren't getting the information they would need to come to an informed decision about this policy. you know we should hold the media to a high standard the government is making their job very difficult with the secrecy
11:08 am
of the clampdown in information to crack down on whistleblowers the refusal to disclose basic information like who were fighting how many people have been killed how many civilians have been killed what's the legal justification the obama administration is refusing to disclose any of this information and then makes it much harder for the media to do their jobs in fresh violence in an age of twenty five police officers have been killed by the islamic militants in the volatile sinai peninsula the. attack came a day after dozens of detained muslim brotherhood supporters died juri an attempt to break out it means the number of people killed in recent clashes between loyalists of the ousted president morsy and security forces has risen to almost a thousand artist bell true reports from cairo. two very bloody incidences that took place sunday and of course today the first incident yesterday was apparently a botched prison breakouts more state media reporting it was on sunday thirty six
11:09 am
thirty six prisoners who had been picked up during the ramses square crisis on friday when most of the supporters and security forces were engaged in bloody street battles were basically in a police truck being moved from a security directorate to prison pending fifteen days in jail pending investigations now according to state media they were attacked said this police truck was attacked by armed groups the police responded with tear gas and office there was a ledge of the kidnapped in the in the meantime these prisoners were basically suffocated to death however the muslim brotherhood have a different story they say the prisoners were in fact killed by the police forces and more and more than thirty six were actually dead now the second incident happened in sinai this very very difficult area of egypt's what the related reports are saying are actually conflicting one source talking to a.p. said that armed gunmen attacked two police cars with weapons and basically mowed
11:10 am
down these police officers during an ambush of the source is a saying that a rocket propelled grenade was fired at the police and that's what led to their death this is basically the single biggest death toll in sinai in the last few years so it's a significant event as that particular area continues to heat up dozens of churches christian businesses and homes torched run sacked in raided by supposed islamist supporters of ousted leader mohamed morsi i spoke to one christian family down south where most of this violence that actually occurring in the area told me that a local islamist family had actually threatened and demanded extortion money to protect her business so what we're looking at here is really serious crackdown on the christian communities to the point where some of the senior members of the churches suggesting that they don't have public appearances christians in. so is it fitting that they have to stay at home meanwhile churches are going up in flames almost every single day the people are saying the security forces are not helping
11:11 am
the situation they're not responding to calls for help so the citizens themselves about to form a human cordons around these churches to protect them from the let's say really this kind of culture of impunity contributing to this crisis which is the story that we're going to be watching as it develops in the coming days. now the chaos in egypt is threatening to affect neighboring israel one of the leading protest movements called tom rod is already urging the egyptian government to cancel peace accords with israel signed more than thirty years ago let's bring in your i'm asking here in jerusalem the former israeli diplomat and the u.s. and an expert on the middle east thank you so much mr ettinger for joining us here on r.t. well the campaign to abolish the peace treaty that exists between the two countries is getting momentum and in fact has already gathered three hundred thousand signatures so do you think there is a danger of that actually happening and if so what would be the implications.
11:12 am
well certainly the recent events in the middle east as a whole in egypt in particular shed light on the very tenuous very provisional nature of any agreement in the middle east way there are among muslims among the arabs and certainly a bit when the arabs or the muslims on one hand and what they call the infidel the infidel christian or the inn for the jews and therefore any agreement signed by israel should be regarded forty days it's an agreement which is very limited in time just like the regimes in the arab world which are very provisional very short term so are their policies in general and so are their policies towards israel and therefore any change for the worse as far as peace with israel should
11:13 am
not overwhelm anybody it's part of the very unfortunate reality in the middle east which therefore requires israel to have extra extra extra security if it wants to survive the unpredictability is in the middle east while yesterday we saw we heard of killings of more than twenty people and policeman on sinai peninsula which is a sign of intensifying violence there and there is a mist of main target now seems to be egyptian security forces but is there a fear in israel that actually they might engage in some cross a border attacks what is the mood in your country is there a concern at all about this. the terrorists in sinai peninsula have already launched number off attacks on israel launching missiles at israel trying to get through the border into
11:14 am
israel and it has been israel has unilateral military preemption which prevented that but we should realize that the middle east is increasingly going through an islamist zation and increasingly terrorism is taking a higher and higher profile and once again when it comes to islam make regimes when it comes to islamic terrorism we should realize in the arab middle east the notion all for islam on the one hand and democracy on the other hand are mutually exclusive they constitute oxy moron and require the weaker the egyptian regime the stronger islamic terrorism their weaker the central government
11:15 am
in libya after the expulsion or the killing of qaddafi the more anarchy the more terrorism in libya there weaker the assad regime as bad and it is a very bad regime but well the fire is now on a situation stronger. your let's not focus on the situation in egypt specifically israel's position in that i mean since morsi is ouster. israel has been somewhat quiet and silent on what's happening in the country prompting speculation that as. quietly siding with the egyptian army in suppressing the islamists is that so. israel has not been quiet in fact we have been accused so to speak accused so to speak by the new york times which unfortunately has been a supporter of the muslim brotherhood we've been accused of overtly supporting the
11:16 am
military regime in egypt and once again military regime in arab countries as betty that is and it is bad it's non-democratic it's dictatorial but it's much much much better then regime which is terrorist inclined the muslim brotherhood has an agenda which transcends egypt it transcends infect even the muslim world it's a terror organization which has few elements which are always almost to villian in nature their military click on the other hand has an agenda limited to egypt and therefore for the sake of regional stability for the sake of the world at large and for the sake of israel i believe it's much better to have a military regime rather than a muslim brotherhood regime in egypt ok well it seems to get your view on this one on sunday the drizzling post a quote of the israeli officials saying that the only actor that can assert
11:17 am
authority in egypt and keep it from descending into chaos is the military and of called to what extent do you agree with that very briefly sir if you can. well we can we have seen it in egypt that it was that military critique which basically took down mubarak mubarak last favor became weak weak health wise weak. governance wise it was the military that basically two came down it was the military that just now took down the muslim brotherhood it was the military which took down the monarchy of king for me back in nineteen fifty two and since ninety fifty two until today we have had actually sustained military rule exception was the last year of the muslim brotherhood and under the military rule
11:18 am
until mubarak the muslim brotherhood where limited in action because de worde they cleared for what they are namely a terrorist organization. your knitting your former israeli diplomat in the us an expert on the middle east thank you so much for talking to us live from jerusalem. while still has for you here on r.t. r t gets inside the deluce far east of russia where heavy rains and floods have forced tens of thousands of people to abandon their homes a corresponding needs some of those who couldn't get out. well. it's technology innovation all the developments around russia. the future are covered. wealthy british style it's

a number of protestors and courting the green party's m.p. who had gathered in a quiet corner of britain's countryside to battle a corporate goliath's that's prime to dig up the area by tracking for cheap gas well there is now a standoff between officers and the campaigners while the drilling firm itself says it can dam see activists illegal actions the protests in the village of bell come to disrupt the company's drilling plans were supported by activists in london to campaigners glued their hands together blocking the entrance to a p.r. company for the firm behind a fracking that's our silly explains what's stoking the strong reaction. over here when balkan but this is the site of where an oil and gas company quit drill is doing exploratory drilling you have the police over here trying to stop any possible protesters from getting in to clear the fracking is a divisive a topic over here you've got. residents debating it the issue many of them pointing
11:21 am
out to what they see will be the consequences if big companies go in to their neighborhoods to their area and the consequences that impact on climate on their water we spoke with one of those residents and talk to her about what her fears are if fracking doesn't do happen now ministers who many of whom my industry invested who are saying that there is no evidence of contamination and that they can regulate this safely and that this is been going on for decades none of which they are true on the kitchen very the willfully lying or they haven't done the research there is ample evidence of despereaux home that is done the seismic activity is triggered the water is contaminated and the bottom line is this industry this technology is an extreme eco sun technology it cannot be regulated once you mess with us up to and enjoy. even the industry's own figures say that all the wells will leak in the end it is just insane that this is being allowed to go ahead instead of reinvesting in safe renewable energy technologies that will give us
11:22 am
energy security will give us last employment and one hundred people it's quiet right now because they've stopped operations having taken the advice of the police and more protesters will be coming to this area and right over there this is quite a common a sight around here were residents gather to argue fracking or to discuss with police when police officers come over to where they are camped out there thinking that they think there's a way to my marriage you know you know if this impacts it will affect them then you're going to have the bowing out how once you're not you asian patronage the u.k. government is looking to the example in north america in the united states where they say that the energy market has changed the bills have been lowered and this has increased a self-sufficiency david cameron has said that that is this will also increase jobs as well as lower bills but clearly the residents here who are here camping out are saying that the positives do not quite outweigh the negatives that they think fracking will bring to them. reporting from balcombe. now for those of you still
11:23 am
wondering why residents want to prevent the drilling in their neighborhood here's how it affects the environment well first off the toxic chemicals which are pumped into the ground could and in the water table and possibly into drinking water plus since the technology includes fluids a tremendous amount of radioactive waste is produced which then has to be dumped somewhere well despite mammy's studies say that fracking does no harm to groundwater drill site residents claim the chemicals do contaminate the soil and top it off a tremendous amount of highly potent greenhouse gases are released when the first gases are released warfare the environmental impact of conventional oil and gas exploration while still plenty of controversy there but on the flip side fracking has proven itself to be a way of accessing cheaper angie and creating a much needed jobs environment. thomas told us that it's exactly what makes these stories flirt with big business and the thing that will really stop this is being

able to make the case that it doesn't need selfish or energy needs it is incredibly damaging for the environment for the people who live in those communities and it will only increase our emissions one of the things that we think has been really missing from this whole debate is the government stepping up to the plate this is a government who thought it was going to be the greenest government ever it's quite clear in the u.k. context and indeed in the european context that the profits are more than likely to go to shareholders and to organizations like. thing the basic. you cannot replicate what's happening in the united states with what's happening over here while we have plenty more opinions on fracking over on our website also there were asking you whether fracking to extract shale gas should be used in populated areas of joy the poll at r t v dot com. in russia's far east thousands of people have been forced to abandon their homes after the worst

you know people in moscow say there are like whole web sites and facebook groups about the childfree lifestyle which i didn't believe until i saw the cover for the aug twelfth copy of time magazine yes childfree is no real thing sadly basically these are people who have started a cool trend of not having children and using their time and resources completely for themselves you know if you don't want to have kids that is your business and i really couldn't change your mind even if i wanted to but there are people all over the internet who are just swimming in their own self-satisfaction like pigs in slop because they are part of the no kids trend the sickening part about this trend or should i say it mentality is that these people glow in adore themselves for being too selfish to give their time and money to a child oh i'm the center of the universe and i'm proud of it. this is an extremely antisocial and destructive mentality to adore yourself for contributing nothing to
