video for your media project c.e.o. don carty dot com. coming up on r t the government of yemen has requested a supply of drones from the u.s. the request came directly from yemen's president hoping it would help the fight against al qaeda threats more on that just ahead. the u.s. attorney for the eastern virginia neil mcbride is leaving his post his office has a history of going after notable figures like cia whistle blower john kiriakou kim dotcom and wiki leaks we'll look at his work and what it means for some of the pending cases. here in the u.s. churches are tax exempt but how about a tax break for atheist groups there's a battle brewing in the courts right now over this very issue we'll tell you more later on in the show.
8:01 pm
hello there it's friday august twenty third eight pm here in washington d.c. i'm aaron aid and you're watching archie. we start our newscast tonight in yemen where the country's leaders have approached u.s. officials to request drone technology in order to increase the country's defense against al-qaeda militants yemen's president has asked for armed drones from the u.s. mere weeks after american drone strikes hit the country nine times in a two week period killing near nearly forty yemeni the drone strikes came as the united states and other western countries closed a number of embassies in the middle east as the result of an al qaeda threat. president hadi of yemen has given his public support to the american drone program because he says that his country does not have the technology to fight the islamists on their own. now according to the associated press president hadi told
8:02 pm
police cadets on thursday that the u.s. drones have been carrying out attacks in yemen in accordance with an agreement to combat terrorism it was signed by the united states and former yemeni president after the september eleventh attacks now the u.s. does acknowledge that it has a drone program in yemen which is largely conducted from camp limone a in djibouti however it does not discuss or disclose information about individual strikes no word yet whether the united states will comply with the yemeni were crossed. and now to the ongoing issue of the n.s.a. has been a subject of controversy since the leaks of edward snowden which demonstrated that the agency that was spying on american citizens and breaking court ordered rules to do so now in a new interview president obama said this about the oversight of the n.s.a. what was learned was that n.s.a. had inadvertently accidentally pulled the e-mails of some americans in violation of
8:03 pm
their own rules because of technical problems that they didn't realize they presented those problems to the court the court said this isn't going to cut it you're going to have to improve the safeguards given these technical problems that's exactly what happened. note how president obama emphasized that these rules were violations accidentally violated now this account directly contradicts the statement made by the n.s.a. it told bloomberg news quote over the past decade very rare instances of willful violations of n.s.a.'s authority have been found so clearly not all of these violations were accidental but the president was right when he said that the face of court demanded that the n.s.a. make changes to its surveillance program in fact the guardian has a new story out today about precisely those efforts to bring the n.s.a. into compliance and into compliance with court orders now using new leaks from edward snowden the guardian uncovered that the n.s.a.
8:04 pm
paid millions of taxpayer dollars to technology companies like facebook yahoo google and microsoft so that these internet companies would be in compliance with the fights the ruling but that's not the only development coming out of the snowden leaks today. and a strange turn of events british newspaper the independent came out with an exclusive story about a secret surveillance base run by the united kingdom in the middle east the article says quote the independent is not revealing the precise location of the station but information on its activities was contained in the leaked documents obtained from the n.s.a. by edward snowden. why is this so odd now well that's because snowden had this response to the independence article i have never spoken with worked with or provided any journalistic material to the independent it appears that the u.k. government is now seeking to create an appearance that the guardian and washington post disclosures are harmful and they are doing so by intentionally leaking harmful
8:05 pm
information to the independent and attributing it to others. so snowden is now accusing the u.k. of attempting to discredit his intentions in leaks and doing so by doing some leaking of their own the independent for its part denies this. and other news neil macbride the u.s. attorney for the eastern district of virginia is leaving his post mcbride's office is currently in the national spotlight for a probe into virginia governor bob mcdonnell and his family for allegedly accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and loans from the c.e.o. of a dietary supplement with a regulatory business in the state now mcbride is also known for the prosecution of cia whistleblower john kiriakou who told the new york times about the clint just an agency's systemic torture program his prosecution of kim dotcom and his website mega upload for copyright infringement racketeering conspiracy money laundering and
8:06 pm
more he filed charges against n.s.a. leaker edward snowden under the espionage act and headed up the investigation into transparency organization wiki leaks now his exit after serving four years as u.s.d.a. will most certainly raise questions about the status of those investigations to discuss macbride speedy exit and the high profile cases he oversaw while serving as u.s. attorney i was joined earlier by r t web producer andrew blake and i started by asking him if mcbride's decision to retire came as a surprise. seems like really came to a surprise to most people especially given the cases that he's working on right now like you just said he was actually in charge of filing that indictment against edward snowden and of course you know he's on the other side the world right now and it's not working out too well he's also involved in the indictment against wiki leaks which has been several years in the making now and there's been ongoing cases involving the indictment against him dot com and mega upload which again that's a year and a half in the sense it was filed in this just hanging out so who is going to take
8:07 pm
over these things who is going to follow up these cases who is going to prosecute these people for the u.s. government it's a really good question and i think it was rather unexpected he's only been there for four years he was appointed by president obama early on in that administration and he's really put his nose in a lot of places during that time so i was particularly me i was taken aback by this i was rather surprised because he was someone who i've been following relatively closely because he's involved in a lot of cases that i think could have major repercussions for everyone worldwide not just in the u.s. not just in the eastern district of virginia he's in charge of cases week with which will have massive ramifications for journalism and with democracy the megaupload case ramifications for the the internet so i he hasn't quite said yet why he did this or where he's going to go or what he's going to do after this but i think a few people were actually taken aback by this and myself included right now it seems like nick brought mcbride he is kind of he's involved in trying many cases
8:08 pm
under the espionage umbrella if you will is that a departure from other people who held his job before him well i don't know if that's something that you could personally blame you know mcbride for if anything i think you should look at the obama administration itself of course during the last five and a half years president obama has prosecuted more people under the espionage act for leaking or for allegedly leaking leaking state secrets than every other president combined twice over there's been a pattern during the last couple years it seems to. new every few months believe it or not were different people who take information and put out in the public are being called spies and pride has been spearheading that campaign under the obama administration's umbrella i'm not sure that's going to continue without him. a lot of people have been saying that sets a really dangerous precedent what they've been doing especially with the wiki leaks case you know the wiki leaks investigation is still rather mysterious there's a grand jury sealed indictment there's been all sorts of testimonies that no one
8:09 pm
knows about but it's completely separate from the p.f.c. bradley manning court martial they had concluded it was filed by the by the u.s. government. actually investigating wiki leaks is taken in the eastern district court into a position where they've been pursuing charges or at least investigations against people all over the world not american citizens citizens in iceland sweden the u.k. and it's it's it's shocking to see that the u.s. government could be charging people who are not u.s. citizens with espionage right now critics of mcbride they say that he engages in prosecutorial overreach for instance you know they can dot com you went to new zealand to meet with that organization can you tell us what they had to say about mcbride's prosecution i don't think you really have to ask him dot com or about the prosecution because from an outsider's perspective i think it was ridiculously over the top here is i mean i mentioned earlier you know i think it's outrageous that you can take someone outside of the u.s.
8:10 pm
and charged with espionage but i guess essentially that is what espionage is but the point i'm trying to make here is that the u.s. government has been going after a lot of people outside of the u.s. and prosecuting them and attempting to convict them for crimes that aren't illegal in those jurisdictions with the mega upload case we saw the f.b.i. coordinating a raid with new zealand authorities that ended with dozens of agents and helicopters coming off of kim dotcom is a roof while his family was asleep and and just detaining everyone seizing all of his. possessions all his money this is a new zealand citizen the other side of the world literally the other side of the world who is running a website that people all over the world in the us included were using in that something like with the wiki leaks case can the us really go out there and take a journalist in this case to lead us on for any of his associates and charge them with espionage when they're just running a journalistic endeavor on the other side of the world it's a bit silly but it's definitely something that we've been seeing under the reign of
8:11 pm
feel the bride. that was our web producer and you click thank you. as new york city mayor michael bloomberg nears the end of his reign over the big apple we decided to look back at some of the more memorable decisions the politician made while in office things like his attempted ban on large sodas and trans fats the blatant favoritism of wall street particularly goldman sachs and who could forget his final major act as mayor stop and frisk and just yesterday mayor bloomberg said that he asked the courts to intervene after the city council overrode his veto to the controversial modifications of n.y.p.d. stop and first measures are to correspondent lives wall brings us that mayor bloomberg top three most memorable question of all moments. well as the race to find the next new york city mayor is underway current mayor michael bloomberg has left a legacy of some controversial decision it's fight to keep stop and frisk alive and well as the latest on. our.
8:12 pm
three. all stop and frisk critics see it as a way to legalize racial profiling and just yesterday the city council overrode the mayor's beadles to scale back a law not too long ago mayor bloomberg was on a crusade to ban big sugary drinks. this is nothing to do with banning we are ability to buy as much as many sugary drinks as you want simply the size of the cup that can be used it cannot be greater than sixteen ounces under this regulation well this regulation outraged critics that saw it as another example of the mayor creating a nanny state liberals and conservatives alike took shots at the attempted ban.
8:13 pm
the old what do you think of his efforts to protect the rights of our native beverage. and i don't like it i think it gives liberals a bad name i really do make liberals look like bullies want to tell people what to do. just as the band was set to go into effect the state supreme court struck it down allowing new yorkers to enjoy sugary drinks and whatever size container they please he also tried to get soda tax the eighteen percent does that imply with the state legislature either ameriquest to control what we put into our bodies doesn't end with soda he made it new york city the first major city to ban smoking in bars and restaurants. a few years after that he banned all trans fat foods from being served at restaurants in the big apple it also thanks to mayor bloomberg that every big chain restaurant in the city post calorie counts on all food items it's unclear
8:14 pm
if the move actually has led to people eating pure calories or a skinnier population so one thing is clear bloomberg is a mayor with a mission but there's still a debate if it's a public safety mission or a nanny state mission here in washington as well marty. should the atheist groups receive the same tax breaks that religious organizations get the federal government thinks so the u.s. government wants to give tax breaks to leading atheist groups saying that it is leaders can be considered ministers atheists however say we are not a church and have no interest in being considered as such a court battle over the tax break that allows ministers of the gospel to claim part of their salary as tax free housing is being contested by freedom from religion a medicine wisconsin based atheist organization that believes the exemption gives religious groups and unfair advantage and is unconstitutional but government
8:15 pm
lawyers say that atheist leaders can be ministers too since atheism can function as a religion to discuss this ongoing battle i was joined earlier by camilla bell host of the sex politics and religion hour and a board member of the american atheists i started off by asking her if other atheist organizations around the country agree with the stance of freedom from religion and their entire group. so the freedom from religion organization says absolutely atheists are not churches there if we look at what the law actually says ministers of the gospel are entitled to take tax breaks for their housing. but here's the thing any nonprofit organization in the u.s. should either be able to be treated as people who are groups that are going good work or they should get the same protections that religion or religious organizations do the problem is that atheist groups are not churches there were not
8:16 pm
none of the groups or using a supernatural claim to a higher power you know rabbis are ministers of the gospel the moms are ministers of the gospel but if we're all doing organizational work that requires organization exemptions for housing either everybody gets it or nobody does don't try and fudge the issue by saying you're a church and you act as a religion you act as a minister absolutely not even the government doesn't by that there be mused by the whole thing now what in your opinion makes this tax exemption specifically unconstitutional for the congress shall make no law ok here's the deal let's pretend that you are minister aaron and i am not a minister jamila now if your job says you can't have part of your salary and housing that's money that all taxpayers are giving to you you you can deduct it off of your taxes and you don't have to report it whereas if i say ok well i work with
8:17 pm
i work with a school group that teaches science i don't get the taxpayers to help pay my mortgage that that's unjust only because you claim to have some supernatural thing going on do you get a real and easy to see benefit that i can even apply for simply because i don't claim to have. god or gods or whatever on my side it's an equal treatment the fourteenth amendment says equal protection under the law that's that's what we're looking at here you are treated in a manner that is preferential and i am not also when we look at the fact that just the paperwork required to become a church if you say i am minister and i want to be a church the government says here's your five a one c three exemption enjoy you don't have to tell us how you're spending your money you don't have to tell us oh that housing example how much actually are you paying that that's a little change now. since rick warren and saddleback you know was taking seventy
8:18 pm
thousand dollars for his own housing and then protested when the government said hey prove that you need that much. if i am not a minister i've got to fill out a form that says i want to be a nonprofit government here's your eight hundred dollars up front every year i've got to fill out a schedule form which i've got to go to an accountant and pay those fees it's a burden that i've got to do every single year and just because a minister and for the sake of this argument minister and you're a church you don't have to do that you don't have to keep going back and disclosing what you get you don't have to disclose disclose anything at all how do we know who's doing any kind of financial malfeasance isn't it in the interest of the government to learn that now what do you ultimately hope for in this court battle what would you like to see happen everybody gets the exemption or nobody gets it do not try and play lawyer ball and go you atheists are churches and ministers nobody believes that even the lawyers of making that argument don't believe that
8:19 pm
it's an intellectual exercise for them the real fact of the matter is that all americans need to be treated equally this country is founded on that principle this weekend of all you know the anniversary of the fiftieth anniversary of the march on washington for jobs and freedom wanted everybody treated equally whether one is religious or whether one is not do you think that religion can provide a societal good. it can so can raise parties so can team sports a lot of things can provide good do they sometimes if you're going to give me a tax break give me a tax break if i do good not because i'm doing good in hopes of avoiding hell or cuz that's what my religious tradition tells me do it because it's good to do do it because it benefits americans jamila thank you very much that was jamila bey host of the sex politics and religion hour in other news twenty year old adult film performer cameron bay's health has brought the porn industry to
8:20 pm
a halt after it was revealed this week that she tested positive for hiv they has come forward to confirm her diagnosis which prompted a moratorium on the making of pornography in california filming will be on hold until an s.t.d. over say a group for adult performers test all of the partners they have since two weeks before her last negative test now it has been confirmed that zander corpus who base shot her last movie with had unprotected sex only weeks later with sydney leathers during the filming of their adult movie about anthony weiner now leathers has been in the news recently after it was revealed that she was anthony weiner's latest sexting partner leathers has released a statement saying that she has been tested and retested for hiv and the results have been negative earlier i spoke with adult film performer chanel preston and i asked her what cameron bay is hiv and cameron based hiv diagnosis means for the
8:21 pm
adult film industry as a whole. well i mean it just means we're going to keep on doing what we're doing i think that a lot of people try to make us responsible for what the performers do outside of the industry but the reality is we can only be responsible for the protocols that we put in place when they come into the industry to keep our performers safe and that's exactly what we're doing now you've said in other interviews actually one here on our network that you think female performers in your industry are usually weary about sleeping with people outside of the porn industry because of how infrequently non porn stars are tested for disease do you believe that cameron bay felt the same way as you do. well i don't know cameron bay and unless this was forced upon her i'm going to assume she doesn't feel the same way as me however i stand behind what i said before and i feel the majority of the porn stars are conscious of who they sleep with so just because one person isn't shouldn't set the standard for everybody else now what measures are currently in place to protect
8:22 pm
people from contracting onset. currently the standard is every two weeks we get a full panel test and then performers can also set their own standard they can say oh i want performers to be tested five days before a week before and some performers do use condoms now for how long will the porn industry be on hiatus. the protocol is to obviously test. and then anyone who has had contact with her will be tested and until they are clear that we will not be shooting. now we often hear about the porn industry being on high alert if you will following a positive test result from a sexually transmitted disease and your experience in the industry how frequently would you say this has happened. i've been in the street for three and a half years and twice someone has tested positive for hiv however both of those
8:23 pm
times hiv he was not contracted onset it was outside of work so a lot of people look at our industry go oh my god twice someone's got to be but the reality is they should look at and go oh that's great only two people have tested for hiv because that's what the test is there for for people coming in we test them and it hasn't spread at all so what we're doing is working would you say that you are still wary about having unprotected sex with people outside of the industry yes will you continue to stay that way i'm sorry what was that do you want to continue to stay that way do you like to kind of only have sex with people in the industry given particularly what's happened this week. yes because i think any time anyone no matter if you're in the industry or not any time you choose to be sexually active you're taking a risk so just because someone is putting money in my hand to have sex doesn't make
8:24 pm
that more dangerous and because we take extra precautions it actually makes it less dangerous so yes i feel safe having sex within the industry and i don't feel so safe having unprotected sex outside of the industry now it's been reported that cameron bay had unprotected sex with actors and or corbis in wiener and me he plays anthony weiner who then had sex with sidney leathers have you spoken with any of these people and if so how are they reacting to these revelations. i haven't spoke with either of them so i can't speak for either of them you know you kind of touched on this before but are you scared to go back to work no i'm not i really do believe in our testing system and i'm not afraid to go back to work and you think the industry will be sound despite all this yes. thank you for your time we really appreciate you speaking with us that was adult film performer chanelle preston thank you now it's one thing to have the government track your phone records and
8:25 pm
snoop on your emails without you knowing about it but what if it was your boat tracking your every move well tens of thousands of brazilians downloaded the boyfriend tracker out that does just that that is before was removed from the google play app store last week now in the digital age you can be your own private investigator here's how it works to install the op the tracker has to nab the phone from their partner and then they can track their partner's location get their partners text messages forwarded to their own cell phone and even force the phone to but dial the tracker so they can listen in on their partner's calls now since its launch in brazil two months ago it's drawn fifty thousand users and this is despite privacy concerns google says it won't comment on why or remove the op but here's some unsolicited dated invites if you need to track them you probably should dump them. now when people think about war what usually comes to mind is soldiers
8:26 pm
in the battlefield or air raids not to mention modern drone strikes overseas but there's also war fought more with keyboards and circuits rather than bullets and explosives for a look at the digital way of war the residents lori harf an honest. putting words in the world a website that keeps track of how many wars are going on there at least sixty countries involved in wars and over four hundred militias or separatist groups involved in active military engagement but none of those are the big one none of those are world war three well world war three is being waged right now only

instead of nuclear bombs or chemical weapons the weapon being wielded these cyber warfare. president obama's proposed budget for two thousand and fourteen explicitly calls for more military hackers to head off escalating cyber threat from other superpowers. the budget proposes an increase of the defense department spending on cyber efforts to four point seven billion dollars but it cuts the pentagon spending overall by three point nine billion and the department of homeland security is set to get an extra forty four million for an information sharing effort even though its budget is been drastically cut so clearly when it comes to defense the u.s. is making cyberspace a priority. according to intelligence officials cyber attack and espionage has supplanted terrorism as the top security threat facing the u.s.
8:28 pm
at. the spending under this budget will be used to bolster defense against cyber attack as well as boost its offensive capabilities and as a whistleblower edward snowden confirmed that the us created just met the malware you. used to attack iranian nuclear facilities and of course the n.s.a. is collecting all of our digital data and chinese and russian hackers have all been in the news lately to all of the world's superpowers are involved in cyber warfare against each other right now. using language reminiscent of world war two propaganda air force general robert hillard recently told space and cyber industry executives tracked through doors someone from halfway around the world is trying to get into your network looking to steal what you are developing. in the us are supposedly heroes their own digital thus their burg jobs gates guys who have made their fortunes creating the tools of the cyber trade and our government villains
