6:01 am
and a major air show gets underway outside moscow with cutting edge technology and world class flying skills on display turned expected half a million strong audience. this is r.t. coming to you live from the russian capital i'm marina joshie welcome to the program . now it looks increasingly likely that syria will face a military onslaught with the british media now reporting that warplanes and transferred jets are being deployed to the u.k.'s air base in cyprus lying just two hundred kilometers from the syrian coastline the island is expected to become a launch point for a u.s. led campaign against the government are just as are so he joins me now live from london so tessa what else do we know about the military buildup in the area.
6:02 am
well we know that over the weekend the rhetoric indeed has been increasingly tough and increasingly aggressive towards syria and various reports here have suggested that there is indeed a signs of muscle flexing in the region particularly surrounding syria it's been reported here by the guardian newspaper that warplanes and military transporters have been moved to britain's akrotiri air base in the cyprus citing that two commercial pilots who regularly fly from larnaca in cyprus have spotted a c. one thirty transport planes from their aircraft as well as detected small from asians of possibly european fighter jets from their radar screens and also at the guardian says that residents are living in near the airfield have confirmed to them that there's been an increase in activity in the area over the last forty eight hours and it has to be noted that officials from the british airfield there have
6:03 am
denied any military build up in the area now also we have to know that the air base is just about one hundred miles or one hundred sixty kilometers from syria which is why those observing are looking at it as a likely launch area for any possible military operation we also know that there are warships for warships helicopter carriers and two for gets in your brain of the british and the french have a jet fighter stationed in the u.a.e. if needed these are according to those the reports and we know that in europe here germany is one of those countries who have been rather cautious when talking about any intervention in syria but it has changed over the weekend recently when germany had said that it would support any operation if it had been proven if it is proven that chemical weapons have been used by syrian government now also on the other side of the atlantic the u.s. has been ratcheting up its rhetoric as well it's been reported by reuters that the
6:04 am
u.s. navy was expanding its mediterranean plesance with a fourth. ships capable of launching long range subsonic cruise missiles to reach land targets in syria and now we also know from the white house that obama is weighing a military strike of limited scope and duration it's been said it will take no more than two days and involve sea launched cruise missiles so we can see the rhetoric really is building up and it's manifesting in what is being observed as an increase in military positions in the area now and all of this of course of western governments are adamant that it is because syria's government is has been using chemical weapons although investigation is still going on the foreign secretary here of the u.k. william hague says the government is quote unquote clear that assad is behind the alleged chemical weapons attack in syria and he says that they may bypass the parliament here which will anger a lot of the m.p.'s here there's been a lot of hesitation coming from parliament. as far as international law is
6:05 am
concerned we know that there's been no military attack so far because the security council has not come to an agreement however right now the a french foreign minister laurent fabius had said that it is possible to act without any u.n. mandate it is possible to do so he said in some circumstances it can be bypassed the but international law is still defined by the u.n. now what this exactly means and how this is going to be interpreted will become clear as we continue to follow this developing story around syria well looks like the situation is getting more a tense as investigators are doing their job in fact it's day two for the fact finding mission of the u.n. investigators there are still you think of so much for bringing us this report. now the aggressive rhetoric from washington has pushed it into another round of heated exchanges with russia the two countries join a plan conference in geneva and the brokering peace between the warring sides in
6:06 am
syria is now close to collapse well joining me live now is ortiz lucy confident of . i there i really see well talk us through the reaction from both sides the situation in syria charbel russia and the u.s. have been scheduled to meet in the hague on wednesday this is to discuss setting up that international conference and actually finding a political solution to the crisis now on monday the u.s. state department had indicated that the meeting would be postponed because of quote ongoing consultations over that alleged chemical weapons attack in syria now russia meanwhile had expressed regret about that decision the deputy foreign minister had taken to twitter to say that working out the political program matters for a resolution on syria would be especially useful with the threat of force hanging over the country the russian foreign ministry spokesman alexander lucas also issued a statement tuesday in which he called on the international community to show prudence over the crisis and to observe international law urging against a military intervention now the intense international pressure comes on the heels
6:07 am
of reports of a chemical weapons strike that may have killed over a thousand people in syria a convoy of u.n. inspectors came under fire in monday as it's made its way to eastham ask us to investigate the area that they were able to reach the science into can collect some samples and interview witnesses but they were only able to stay there for a half an hour we also have to keep in mind that the mission's mandate is to determine whether chemicals chemical weapons were used in the latest incident of the mandate doesn't include an assignment of blame but in some of the most aggressive language used by the administration in washington the secretary of state john kerry had accused the syrian government of quote indiscriminate slaughter of civilians and of cynical efforts to cover up responsibility for what he called a cowardly crime and he said that the use of chemical weapons against civilians was undeniable and that the obama administration would hold the syrian government accountable for quote moral obscenity take
6:08 am
a listen. well investigators are gathering additional evidence on the ground our understanding of what is already happened in syria is grounded in facts informed by conscience and guided by common sense. now russia's foreign minister sergey lavrov meanwhile had warned against pre-judgment about the use of chemical weapons he also said that intervention by the u.s. and its allies in the syrian conflict without a u.n. resolution would be what he said quote a very grave violation of international law and wrist repeating past mistakes take a lesson. in the many key players started to take sides and act based on the principle of winner takes all betting on those who they saw as potential winners but then the winners turned into losers again this is an example of so-called ad hoc policies as opposed to logical and
6:09 am
integrity policies you cannot for example declare war on one regime because you personally don't like the dictator in power and be friends with a dictator in another country countries need to divert from their personal preferences and determine the main threats to the region which are terrorism and extremism and that's what we need to talk about and agree on have it very tense diplomatic situation at this point very unclear how things will proceed moving forward at least as of yet. all right lisa thanks very much indeed for bringing us this update and for a following this for us there. now his job area director of the beirut based center for middle east studies joins me now live for more analysis on this story thank you so much mr jaber for joining me here on r.t. to discuss the situation in and around syria well as we know at this point washington london and paris say that they are confident they attacked the chemical attack took place and the syrian government is to blame for it they also say that
6:10 am
they do have that they were futile prove in fact they believe they have the irrefutable proof so what more can you tell us about this i mean this as the u.n. investigators are still working in the country to in fact prove that there was a chemical attack. first of all it's a prejudgment and they don't have to start to prepare for a military operation and aggression against syria before expert of the year and. perry will. find their reports. i don't think at all that syria used chemical weapons for many reasons first of all it's political suicide will not do it doesn't have any interest also to play with very important it has that chemical weapon that's saying to the whole world that syria is responsible about what those weapons will be on that. view when and prepare. to barter or. they can
6:11 am
damascus the next day it will not launch chemical weapons because it would be risky for soldiers who are not provided with protective you know. me for example for all those years and also it doesn't have any political interest to do it yes to do it. but they have interests finally i am with. that the syrian regime did not use it now and obama especially mr obama under pressure from their military operation against syria understand this based on my knowledge and ready now today. to papers. say don't do what mr president for those reasons. you have to do with three options first off maybe. you know and it's difficult
6:12 am
complicated and maybe land that doc was not this now i do expect that obama would say yes go ahead and do it. something. didn't come to something you know old boy he doesn't know what the american people think about such a little but ok but you know many going on here what's happening here is you know where the fabricated iraq invasion so in the context of what do you just said and you know obama being under pressure in his own country. what's does that mean i mean does it mean that america hasn't learned the lesson well i mean why would i want to repeat the same mistake. yeah you know you know it's a big difference between iraq and syria first of all united states and on the george w. bush you know or administration that interest you know economic interests
6:13 am
of iraq and bush and his company they do have they did have and they still maybe got to tell you no and they took advantage of that invasion. you used to like to start wars now if you look to the to obama obama came to close doors and all of france not to open a new front but example he did withdraw from iraq he's preparing his withdrawal from afghanistan of course it is but in libya with you know involved physically and he. military and he and the american soldiers on the end of libya now the situation is different and everybody knows this this may be even if it would be from the city you know by two hundred or three hundred cruise missiles . you know what the target is you know they have a bunch of targets. they do one hundred fifty dollars
6:14 am
gets you know get a day and they do it three hundred targets at least you know grade b. they will start of course when they get a. command and control you. will have to leave it there sergeant and we're running out of time but thanks very much for talking us through the situation in and around the country as a situation does indeed escalate there that was his job there director of the beirut based center for middle east studies. now the man down do you have salons dictator doesn't take business break up slightly it seems. coming out for a report on the arrest of a russian company chief after he and they are poor. out of a partnership where the belorussian state owned firms that are more after the break don't go away.
6:15 am
live. live live. live. live. live. live. the speech. she gave. her. mother will. come up with a misleading good little. mother.
6:16 am
just see the minimum. amount of money a little. welcome back you are watching our team come to you live from moscow now take off time for one of the biggest events on the global aviation calendar cutting edge technology aircraft construction multibillion dollar contract and a spectacular flight program all in all for out a week long back show just outside of moscow well into france as more from the cough scare you. max has reached its twentieth year here in russia what it's really about is bringing civil groups and militaries from around the world together to share ideas both can push the boundaries into the future also it's about discussing expansion from both sides if you take for example
6:17 am
this aircraft they receive chalk it's about meshing the utility side of things it can haul heavy equipment and supplies long distances and it's also about transporting personnel with the comfort of these leather seats it's going to draw interest from the civil side and the military one of the biggest draws every year is the flight program this year eighty two russian aircraft will hit the skies doing aerobatic routines that will be five jet teens twenty aircraft from foreign countries will also have the skies will be three different teams one from france one from china and one from all over europe it just goes to show that no matter what is in the skies or on the ground after twenty years max is still going strong . now a third bailout for greece is now necessary and on avoidable according to e.u. and german officials the chancellor angela merkel is trying to call more riled up electorate insists
6:18 am
a lot less money will be needed this time around all together with a two prior bailouts the total sum of money alone to athens would stand at a quarter of a trillion euros some of the drawers greece's g.d.p. . and makes the repayments a distant hope in the country itself matters are desperate unemployment as record levels with more than half the youth jobless cases of suicides and homelessness of rock of the these last few years but germany remains adamant for more speed all the reports now on what may be going through german leaders minds. more and more we're seeing senior figures from the world of european finance coming out and saying that they think that it's almost inevitable that greece will have to have a third bailout if it's to try and ease its ailing economy particularly here in germany that is something that would be looked at germany has been one of the major contributors towards the towards giving money to the ailing greek economy and of
6:19 am
course we're already a period where there's a general election on the twenty second of september now to talk a little bit more about this and what is to be done with the greek economy i'm joined by dr marcus kerber who is a professor of political economy institute of technology and the founder of the think tank thanks very much for talking to me are we seeing mrs merkel and other leading german politicians dancing around the issue of what's going to be some rather painful decisions they going to have to be made in the near future as a matter of fact it turned out to be unavoidable to meet greece needs some extra money and instead of trying to. conceal this from the public by saying no it will will not come the german finance minister in strict consultation with from macro admitted in public that there will be a third package this was to limit the damage that would emerge from
6:20 am
a denial of reality they continue appeasement policy and continue bailouts instead of saying now let's. draw a bottom line capitalizes on the believe of european politicians that the greeks sped away would be damages. once you call that bluff it will be all over independent of whether the greek want or don't want to care thanks very much for talking to me so greece addicted to bailouts and texted to death as well that debt is. partly being financed by taxpayers from around the rest of the eurozone most notably from here in germany where all the bust amount of money has been as come out of the taxpayer coffers in order to to help out their neighbors in the south however when germans have been polled about whether they would agree should receive this type of money well overwhelmingly about sixty two percent of them have said no
6:21 am
that they shouldn't be getting any more money from germany it seems that that is definitely the case ahead of what looks like a potentially inevitable bailout that the show jack schiff year. it's too much we're subs need some too or we'll be giving everything away we're driving here in broken roads we don't have enough kindergartens money. if you're mentioning there are a lot of people in germany you also have problems we should also invest the money into germany we shouldn't just be giving the money away with thinking about throwing people here so the german people though we see alternately will be called on to foot the bill not happy about giving money to greece. while the early figure being floated for a new greek bailout of ten billion euros though as recent history suggests that's likely to go up so why is this new aid needed by the us what the turnout is there any party election candidate paul hampel this or how will thank you so much for
6:22 am
joining us here on r.t. to discuss the situation in greece well germany is the leading economy of course and the engine behind the euro so if germany can help greece who can. well actually we don't help greece we out of the financial market because even the last german understood already that we don't pay money to help the greek people or that there is nobody unemployed who will be held. in funds it is the financial market the bangs and the people who had given loans to greece they want their money back and they got it back from this money ok well look at the situation in greece it's obviously in dire straits was the us unemployment hitting record highs people out of jobs out of social security i mean very terrible situation economically and otherwise germany in fact was influential in imposing austerity measures on greece which had a devastating impact as we can see so doesn't germany now have
6:23 am
a sort of moral obligation to see this through and help greece recover and get back to normal the best solution would be to give greece what it needs it needs and cut it's quite simply the total adept of griese about three hundred fifty billion euros three hundred fifty billion euros and you just have to put mathematics books from school to understand greece can pay back and you'll be maximum two point six billion two point six billion and a total of three hundred fifty billion that would mean just with one percent pay back one percent interest rate and it's more it's about four and plus they have to pay three point five billion two point six three point five it doesn't work and greece will be in debt for decades that solutions no greece needs a hat cut it is time not to spend more money into an economy which will not be able to help itself it needs to have and it needs
6:24 am
a return to the drachma to the greek currency that's our opinion and the question is how can griese do it how can it pay the money back that it gets loaned what economically can they do and remark on the stereo cuts though they cut. no they come they need to cut because this debt is so high that they would never be able to pay the money back and who to whom they from whom they got some loans and from a time from banks especially from german and french banks by the way and now all of this debts are in the european state bank as well as the ease that be as we see the central bank and and it would be differently a loss for the european partners for the e.u. countries but better to make a cut now than a much bigger one in future because greece will be in debt for the next decades not only years and what we think is that. good advice not only for greece for the southern europe european countries as well to return to the old currency because
6:25 am
you know this market from the balcony to the north atlantic has no economic. structure that it's the same in roommate or into a vein as it is in france germany and that's a lens so this euro system has failed and we have to mention countries go back to the national currency just to help them safe they can downgrade the currency then and they can compete again with lower prices all right paul hampel election candidate from the alternative for germany party thank you so much for you see here in alt. now snatched by the man nicknamed europe's last dictator it may sound like fiction but that's what's happening right now annabel rowsley had of russia's largest producer of potash soil nutrient was rested there after being lured to a business meeting where the government a barrage of charges now face him all for breaking off a partnership with a bill russia's state for him was get more on the situation with our chief business
6:26 am
correspondent kate if you'll be in there or carry it looks like there is some scandal brewing in the fertilizer business tell us more prone to scandal and intrigue it's got all the elements to it and as you say we've got mr. he's gone you know probably thinking he's going to get a bit of champagne some kind of plays and ended up getting detained at the airport after this meeting with the government with the officials there is just to remind you just to recap the relationship between euro kelly and barry's tally first collapsed it was the biggest cartel of course in the world but it to lapse this who happened in in about a month not not any longer now it did tell ups as i say and together they made up around a third of the exports of potash and it collapsed because of accusations the other producer was undermining their sales records but for the country is a huge deal because it makes up ten percent or their exports and the people think you know what is potash what it's what it's all about this is the equivalent of
6:27 am
saudi arabia putting out of pay that's how big the collapse was you know it is very fragile but here it seems that this collapse of the partnership between these two companies is the cause of all the situation scandal darted definitely in the situation so it's get even worse because if he is arrested he could face ten years in prison and get all of his possessions and acids against his assets results which are going to billions of dollars more and it's not just him as well there's talk of other or members getting arrested for them in total so this could get even more going to set off a chain reaction that is a little complicated there. so given all this i mean has there been any response from moscow yes i have and they have also some kind of response as well i can say that the russian deputy prime minister hugo she volved he said it's inappropriate and not fitting to a partnership and also the kelly they've said it's a crude provocation as well so i think this is just the beginning in order there's i think it's going to escalate and get in even more there's more to see of course
6:28 am
all right katie thanks so much for talking us through a situation not so easy and straightforward as you said there is more to come. well you're watching aren't we and next we're bringing our discovering the russian series that explores a village that's rose in time that one. sometimes it seems like in the face of giant corporations people are just sort of helpless i could be pretty pessimistic myself about what a few individuals with no real money or power can really do against the system but you never dull in fact if you remember tour discussion about ammonia doused pink slime being used across america and frozen fast foods well shift jamie oliver has actually managed to shame mcdonald's enough on t.v. to get them to back down and stop using this ultra processed form of quote meat at
6:29 am
their establishments also we recently discussed gamer rage at the rather racist portrayal of russians in the game company of heroes two well all the rage actually worked and thanks to the seventeen thousand signatures on the change dot org petition that game has been pulled from russian shelves by the developer the thing is that massive corporations do a lot of bad things because they have no morals and are obsessed with profit but because they have no morals and are only obsessed with profit the second you even slightly threaten their cash flow they will instantly start cowering at your feet sometimes but that's just my opinion. in russia summertime means. russians love their family country houses at the end of the working week millions of people head straight for the peace and quiet of the villages a chance to recharge the bonds.
