tv   Larry King Now  RT  September 17, 2013 11:00pm-11:31pm EDT

11:00 pm
so they are larry king now from the pan arrested development it's tony hale i remember doing buster you're in this kind of like emasculated hyper sensitive state all day long that i would come home and my wife would say something i. literally did a thing called shakespeare in the parking lot but it was actually my first taste of a new york audience that you'd see people walk by and then they said they listen and then they go now i'm done plus i realize i put so much weight in expectation on making it that nothing can match that all next on larry king now. welcome to larry king now you know him as buster bluth on arrested development and
11:01 pm
he's just earned his first emmy nomination for his portrayal of the vice president's loyal assistant gary walsh on the h.b.o. series beep we welcome tony hale to larry king now all right how did they tell you you were nominated when my wife and i were up because we were curious if the show was going to get nominated and then my manager called me and i just kept on telling to shut up like and that's all i could tell and i don't know what i'm just telling tom shut up and then my wife and i we scream for about six hours and then i'd take a nap and it was too overwhelming but i called my family and i called. my brother my sister and then i called my acting teacher from high school which was really fun because she you know she made a huge impact on my life or you go to high school i went to well i went to leon high school in tallahassee florida you know and out. of the county yeah and then i but there's this little theater program called the you know. actors theatre company
11:02 pm
in tallahassee and there's a lady named tina williams who just you know started it and that was pretty much my high school like i loved it you thinking about winning or you just happy to be there don't give me the baloney or what do you know. i genuinely am and i know this sounds totally cliche but first of all my it's my first nomination so i'm kind of totally humbled by it but even seeing my name on the list i mean it's it's just taken a lot to absorb it like it's very exciting what's it like playing two characters was similar in a way. in a way they are no they are very similar actually well buster on arrested development is pretty much a six year old trapped in a forty two year old body with one arm with one with one arm unfortunately his his hand was bitten off by a seal that's a typical story line. and then gary the part i play on veep he you know he's what's called the body man to the to the vice president and so he carries around a bag he's got whatever she needs and typically those guys will burn out in two
11:03 pm
years because they have no social life but i have stayed in the forty's because my life is selena who's played by julia louis dreyfus and i will do whatever she tells me i worship the ground she walks on i think i just hear oh yes she was she given you any emmy advice she's won some she yeah she we i mean she was just super excited for me so i mean she's an. amazing lovely lady very talented super talented and super normal what was your break how did you get arrested development shot i was living in new york at the time i had lived there for about eight years and i was doing commercials and theater and then this audition came along and ron howard who you know was producing it and i'm obviously a huge fan of his but also the style was so funny it was kind of reminded me of christopher guest movies like waiting for guffman all that and it was. it was such
11:04 pm
a long shot because i just didn't think they would i mean to put yourself on tape in new york and then have it sent out to l.a. at the times we'd have digital that was like a long shot and then they called me back and so it was very i mean it was quite a ride how do you approach the bull well one thing about buster is he. created the show said all he ever wanted in life was safety that's all buster wants him us he just wants safety so he's kind of in this constant state of defense so his his his face will go back in his hands or go back and as his voice is very high pitched he's always waiting for something to come out him and if it does he's like i'm sorry but he's just constantly waiting for something to attack him and it's just sad like he can't even you know he's going to farmers not gay he's i don't know well it's questionable i mean he's we don't really know i mean it's he's a mom is that ordering is a mama's boy it's up for grabs we know russian is you did you did they let you find out yourself yeah i mean he was written as kind of
11:05 pm
a man child and he very vulnerable and then i think the characters developed went crazy circumstances are given to you like you know buster's first girlfriend of light was lies in an alley and his hand was eaten off by a seal and he goes like mother boy conventions with his mom you know that's normal . so you finally get some kind of find it just because you hear you read the stuff like this paul he's a disaster i'm interested in the day they told you. he's going to lose an arm yeah bitten off by a seal and you're going to wear a hook no reaction when they told you that. at first i was a little bit that's why. i like to use both my hands but but knowing that her words are created to show he comes up with such crazy stuff and i knew it was going to be an opportunity for a lot of funny stuff but at first i was like but the fact is buster one thing is buster also likes to give massages. you know if i could get a hook that was
11:06 pm
a real downer for him because that was limited you get to you train so well and you've done so many things television you get to like buster totally yeah i mean he he's a sweet sweet character is it was the end of his yeah i've been i mean i probably i'd like to would hire ends my i'd like to hire probably twenty four some of their best form but i think you know both hemming gary you do when you do them a lot you you grow attached to them and to the point where i remember doing buster and you're in this kind of like emasculated hyper sensitive state all day long that i would come home and my wife would say something i be like ok i. was like ok we need to take buster out of the picture and bring toni back to rest of the ball was canceled and you think that was it for it you had no idea that well i mean something would come along that you know i mean we had no idea that we would be resurrected again i mean that was crazy but i will say we always kind of knew that
11:07 pm
we were about to be canceled like we were almost always on the verge because our ratings were never good and so we always knew was coming but we we were cancel we thought well maybe another network my pick us up because that was a possibility. you know so but then when it happened it was sad but you kind of say like well that's done it's sad but then to have it come back again it's like you never get that chance when we all seven years like kissing lies of ellie what was that like amazing. you know i remember you know obviously she was cast as my girlfriend on the show and it was one of those things that you know we had you know that when you're done with an icon like lies you kind of it could go one of two directions lies is bizarre she. colorful. and she could go one of two directions she could be a total witch or she could be really gracious and she was so gracious talk about stories like she just told stories and then i mean that. one day we were like
11:08 pm
because you guys you know we'll kiss it was apartment i was like yeah i'm like this an icon let's do it and in this new series that was did this when we came back and the four season you know lies and gets a little frisky with busta like she kind of wanted a bus was kind of always like. ok like she he still tries to kind of understand one point i think he says do you. like she says if you want to stay here with me buster he's like do you mean in the adopted sons guestroom like he's just he's just trying to always get around like you don't want to sleep with me but you know in the end i think they did kind of see what they did yeah. it was a sold kiss was. it with all the attention that's been on that this. was a nerve racking no not at all she's a lovely woman with a lovely lips what do you think arrested development didn't do well the start didn't i did did did well taua did well script wise done the do well audience was i
11:09 pm
think it's one of those shows that. when it came out it was it's a very dense show it's takes you have to pay attention and i think with comedy and the fact is fox since our ratings were never good they didn't have to give us two and a half years like they it was kind for them to keep us going on but it was a heavy show and you had to pay attention and typically with maybe with most comedies people kind of just like to sit back and just kind of hear stuff and laugh but you don't really want to take the time and it's one of those shows you got to take the time which was a lot of hidden things in it when you make of netflix of this whole programming idea it's fascinating i think i mean i'm a win that came out on this on netflix this next season. it was the perfect format for what mitch was doing because he had created such a puzzle to where you couldn't just watch want to see it for one episode to make sense you almost had to watch five episodes ahead to kind of watch them together and it was just this kind of big science experiment that mitch did so is the perfect format for it and then like on veep i love on each bill it's
11:10 pm
a great cause i like kind of the into submission of waiting a week to kind of see what's going to happen next but for netflix i think arrested about was a really good home instead of taking a dark turn in the latest susan you that you may get a sewing machine well how did that come about you're welcome about that. no i will bust your my character becomes a little crazier than he already is and he begins to his mother is leaves him and you think she's left him for like months it's only been two days and he starts to spiral and he starts to make like a dummy of her and then he goes really crazy and i remember talking and mitch that he's really going to crazy and i was like you know what i think i want to have like in that movie aviator with leonardo dicaprio where he played howard hughes and he's like naked in the movie theater i was like i think buster needs to have one of those moments so i think i want to be naked and mitch goes ok in the right when i was saying i was like oh all stalled what are you saying and so now that image is
11:11 pm
out for america to see which is not a pretty image of buster make it a sewing machine sewing his mother's clothes his mother's dummy's clothes actually so he may get a sewing machine as with there are no you've got to find it because of the great image. yeah actually has his look is off and it's just the nub so used i'm not really naked the book is off to. what it is like i will never see this show was a bit funny to play so funny and it's just it was with a it was the coolest thing. you could that's the thing with comedy even though you don't have an audience like on theater you can catch something you can kind of feel the vibe when something feels funny and it felt funny you know will there be another season i hope so i hope so i mean i think i know everybody would be on board as ron howard off to go but he said is it going to be a movie yeah and he i mean i think it's one of those things that all the kind of stuff needs to be arranged scheduling and budget and all that stuff but we're all
11:12 pm
on board we'd all love to do it how you look down before we get into. deep how do you look at tony hale the character actor who's become this now how do you view what's happened to you i mean you kind of a knock around getting work dialogue right well i will i mean i think i've learned a lot of lessons as you've probably learned throughout your career and. i do remember this is me turning into like this is an intense moment but their. love it i remember when i got arrested development and because all my life all i ever wanted was to succumb i was like oh i want to get that second i can succumb and i remember getting it and thinking it doesn't satisfy the way i thought it was going to satisfy it even though it's a fantastic show but it really is i put so much weight an expectation on making it that nothing can match that. and it was that thing of if you're not in all that time when i was kind of like it's coming it's coming it's coming it's like if
11:13 pm
you're not practicing content where you're at you're not going to content when you get what you want you know as well fun getting there the big bear it is it is and it's not sitting and it's not in it but it's also i wish and i think since that experience it's taught me about as a friend of mine said you wake yourself up one hundred times a day to where you're at like right now i'm having an awesome chat with larry king and that's where i'm at rather than being somewhere else because then when you get to wherever you're going it makes it more fulfilling because you haven't put so much weight on it well said coming up we'll talk about another important woman in tony's life to surprise us all the way. well. science technology innovation all the latest developments from around russia we've got this huge area covered. my.
11:14 pm
gut. i. cross talk rules in effect that means you can jump in anytime you want. please ok it was terrible take another look very hard to take a. while to get along here there's a lot that you that are exactly what that earthquake there was. so that you can
11:15 pm
live. to cut a deal with. the feel if you click. click click. click. apply. so i just had a funny last talk about acting all fraud waste and how far all broadway and i say you know shakespeare in the park you did where i did i literally did thing called shakespeare in the parking lot. of the shrew in the east village around like garbage trucks and drug needles. it was actually my first taste of the new york
11:16 pm
audience because you'd see people walk by and they they said they listen and then they go now i'm done and then they just walk right through what separates gary walsh from from busta blue. well i think gary is a he's can function in life busters probably i mean he can't even leave i think the corner of his house but. gary is i think also i mean you've obviously experienced a tremendous amount of politics and it's an environment where there's a lot of positioning and people for power and trying to get ahead and i love that the show kind of takes you behind the scenes but gary is just really one of those guys that if someone news comes to the office he's like hey do it where you want to go for lunch today and he's just keys kind of a wide eyed hopeful person and then i've been there that bad yeah yeah i was alive or go with her julia she is. unbelievable i mean i think she's just one of
11:17 pm
those people that has had tremendous success and has just maintained a kind normal life and her first priority in life is not this business that's her family and i think that really does shows and who she is she republican democrat selina that's the thing you don't know you know like you don't know and you really don't know what party she is on which kind of makes it fun now as the president sort of quit. this is going to change unable to show yeah yeah well she's now kind of on the campaign trail for to be president so there was a there was a hint last year that he's he's not going to run again and then she's going to step up which is going to be chaotic and find you vote for her no i would not you know i would not but gary would my character would just i mean in a perfect world there would be married to selina they would be together and hopefully one day that will happen the role of the president to cast who would you choose to play it i play it. again i stood. i think to be
11:18 pm
a great president where gary lives for selena much like busta lives for his mother right there's a similarity here as their attachment to women yes there is and you have that kind of thing with your wife that home by dead who rules. the rules of the hail house who rules the hail hail house i like that. and i have a fan amazing wife amazing why is she in the business she is she's a makeup artist and we know we met in new york as was she doing you make you know a minute church actually that's where he really. inserted were actually both she's from alabama i went to school in alabama and you continue to go to church together and we did you know you majored in journalism right i did yeah why did you pursue it. you know i think it's one of those things like acting like with you with journalism you have to have that drive you to want it because there's over much rejection and so many people want it and you're you're going job to job if you
11:19 pm
don't have that drive and i have that drive for acting but i didn't have it for journalism and your father was in the military right was yeah generally we associate military people would not support offspring being in acting yes yes however my father. his father was an opera singer and he also he also was an emcee on something called the air earl carroll follies in new york. and so they did movies about yeah and he. said my dad has a real appreciation for the arts which is i'm incredibly thankful for we were military brat i was i was a military brat until about seventh grade in seventh grade we moved to tallahassee florida and that's where i was that's where i was raised from then on she stationed he retired in tallahassee so he was stationed at where we lived for five years in germany and fairfax virginia and all these other places where he was in the army what did she tell has he sort of worked for the state what does he think about or you know she says they're super excited my mom and my dad are incredibly supportive
11:20 pm
and it's you know it's fun like the it's fun for the stories for them to tell stories their friends and and it's just it's a joy because you know it's just i like to talk about how much support they've given me another give had sitcom success and continued success people go on for a long time sure a verse to develop but we don't know you were thinking about the big screen. you know honestly larry gigs a gag. for me gave that comes by sort of if film is in the picture i mean i i think have done some like the info i did the informant and i did other movies but i mean i'm i'm always thankful for work so whatever comes all incredibly grateful you miss the other i do miss the it or i miss i miss the rush you get from a live audience. and also it's very i mean as you know it's television it's very cut apart or film is very kind of part i miss being on stage and just continuing that story throughout on stage and you don't have to stop it's just you can feel
11:21 pm
the momentum of the story and then you know and then you live it and then you can feel the film as more of the directors maybe when the curtain opens it's the actors me it is yeah it is and and television is a largely a writer's medium are you more comfortable with tommy. i love comedy i think i don't know if i'm more comfort with either because i think both with comedy and with drama if there's not an element of truth there i always try to get to that buster was pretty crazy and dairies very colorful but you always want to get to that place of truth you know like buster want safety gary wants desperately respect of selena and so either in drama or comedy trying to find that truthful place bus that doesn't think he's funny oh no oh buster you can't play it and you want me right you have to play bus the absolutely serious and it's one of those things where if you're given crazy circumstances there's no need to push the comedy because you just do it as naturally as possible because you believe and trust the strength if you're new to sewing machine exactly if you have
11:22 pm
a seven year old daughter and you and she have been the she watch you. i think it's going to take a long time before she can see arrested she's she's seen bits but she's like i mean because buster is so out there so i can't i'll give it some time before does she adopt any of your characteristics she's a performer she's a little performer she's super funny and what does she think of you today she said i said sweetie if if you get a chance can you clean your room and she goes i don't think i get a chance. and i was like well they're all use a father. hopefully a good one hopefully i absolutely adore my family and it's you know we shouldn't baltimore so it's very difficult to be away from them but obviously and thanks for the work but i having a family is everything a lot of all i do with my large you twenty's ball was under-rated city it is in the restaurants are fantastic it's right near the harbor yeah we have some social media
11:23 pm
questions for you love friends lover on instagram what's your favorite thing to do in your free time i know it sounds cheesy but i love watching just hang with my family our favorite show is wipeout i do what you like to have though it's on a.b.c. what happens on wife by. larry it's these these these people just kind of go through this big obstacle course and are just knocked over it's like it's like a live action buster keaton perhaps all families competing sometimes but you just see people it's crimea everything's cushioned but you just see them throw it it's like physical comedy for an hour it is and they are there any prizes that they when they were like a lot of money and it is the best natasha riegel on facebook wants to know how you get into the character of the play buster how do i get into. i think it's theory how easily you think it didn't do it with you if i was me a little bit on what that says about me but i think there is again i think it's
11:24 pm
that kind of you know physicality and you you just kind of he just anything that comes out to you he's going to be sensitive to so if anybody's talking to me it's just like oh well and you kind of like you're just kind of waiting for what's coming at you so i tend to do that how do you view him i think i view buster as a very incredibly some other isolated sensitive man who has not seen a day of light and has not seen reality and any time he comes into reality it's so overwhelming that it's almost like he's just been in a box his whole life so he's unhappy. not if he's unhappy because in his world i think he's pretty happy like he even had a relationship once with a room but. i'm not kidding he had a hook because he thought it was a machine you saw this vacuum cleaner and he was like and i remember going sweetie was feeding the roomba some chips or something like that if it was that larry said kimball ted tweets what's your favorite scenes oh wow i have no idea with them i
11:25 pm
don't know i'm excited i would say. what i say a goat cheese i love a swiss man you're a swiss man i like good cheese because you can pull and cranberries and it's pretty neat larry are glad burden on twitter who would win in a fight garry waltz robusta blue gary would take him out. to go with the hook with her i mean that's not saying a lot but gary would take him out actually i take it back as this past season buster did get by on a case and where he could easily take somebody out and he's not even aware of he'll just pass them on the back and they'll go fly and so maybe buster could take area with arrested development continued if you think the would go on to do other clearly on a command yes the way you know i hope so i mean that's what's great about the show is there's all these surprises come out you don't know how it's going to go it's time for if you only knew would tony hale finish the show with a new game first person you have a guest. allison millen fell into last florida allison mune
11:26 pm
a field in tallahassee last name you and felt how old were you i was a sophomore in high school late it was you know as a freshman i think that i got home it was freshman homecoming dance whatever happened to her i have no idea but i will find her on facebook after this interview if you could play another arrested development character who would it be there's a story line in there that tobias has where he's a member of the blue man group because he thinks it's a group for depressed man. and i think i always thought that was where he is and he does dress up in crazy costumes that would be fun t.v. show you'd come back on we would you wish you'd like to come back on what show i was always a massive fan if we they could do it again carol burnett show. tim conway i absolutely worship them tim conway anytime i see him on the floor i love the low on the floor it's true he could do the smallest thing in little things what do you think buster blue fears the most. life gary walsh what does he fear the most
11:27 pm
leaving selena thing tony hale fears the most i would say living a life of fear. i don't want to live a life where do you think your own development was arrested sure who work in progress you have a favored vice president biden has given us a lot of material or has any of you could have something named after you what would be. a candy bar it would have chocolate pretzels carol and bacon and i call it the hail storm oh i like it down thing you should absolutely not say in your emmy acceptance speech. just say something not say nothing to say something just get up there and i think that like there's so many people involved a lot i would even go in there for it i would not say screw all the other nominees you know that would be about that was the best advice you ever received. what's the best advice i think that don't ever listen to the lie that things don't change that
11:28 pm
