need to get back into parliament and into power well we can go live now to our tease peter oliver who's with us now in but peter so if these exit polls are to be believed it looks like a bit of a change is on the horizon there for germany. well it does what it seems is that i'm glad merkel isn't going to be able to keep together her current center right coalition her own party have done marvelously well as from exit polls and preliminary results it seems that they've taken around forty two percent of the popular vote now that's the most that her party's taken since one thousand nine hundred ninety and mrs merkel has been speaking to the crowds at her party headquarters saying it was a simple result and and thanks all round her main challenges with the social democrats now they have had a picture of a north korea lee they've taken just around twenty six percent of the vote out than expected i think by their supporters they were going to do better than not so

really the jacketed faces we've seen the headquarters now i'm glad merkel's current coalition partners it seems certainly aren't going to be coalition partners in the next parliament because that doesn't look like they even going to be there you need five percent to get into the german part of the german parliament and the three democrats the s.p.d. they've got only around four point one percent polls have to be believed now to some key people in anglo merkel's current cabinet that are in the looting that the justice minister and the foreign minister sort of certainly going to be some new positions in the next cabinet now the rest of the people involved in this rest of the parties involved in the green party with around eight point three percent i think of on the left party was around eight point two percent and the green party with around eight point one percent the euro skeptic new boys that have come into this general election where the alternative for germany they at the moment it seems are just missing out on the five percent crucial. watershed to get over to get into the parliament most polls putting them at around four point nine percent but all

that can change is the all the votes are counted up and the results trickle into us throughout the rest of the evening yes the rest of the evening how many more hours we've got to go before we really do have those concrete official results. well in the past we have seen them some t.v. stations here in germany calling who'd won it as soon as well now bush that's not going to happen this time it's going to take a few hours to try again adds up exactly who is come out on top i would say and you know the three or four hours before we get a really solid picture actually in around two hours time or an hour of just under an hour's time we're going to see all of the main leaders taking part in a joint press conference now occasionally this has been the time where by everybody would concede and as it stands at the moment of the exit polls to be believed angela merkel would be announced as the clear winner with her christian democratic c.s.u. and their c.s.u.

it's very important is coming out taking a huge lion share of the popular vote the next thing that comes though is deciding both coalitions it could be this angela merkel will have to go to the green party to to join to form a coalition or the grand coalition as it's known between the the the christian democrats and the social democrats it doesn't seem though that social democrat supporters are particularly keen on that one the only way it seems that angela merkel won't be returned for a third term as chancellor is if the so-called red red green coalition comes about that's the coalition of the social democrats the left party and the green party but not many people in germany hold out much hope for that one as it stands at the moment peter thanks very much indeed at one of our live there in berlin well look for more analysis on these early results all of this of course is based on the exit polls so far let's go to dr max or he's a professor and author and joins me live from berlin as well do you think angle

america is going to be entirely happy with these results of course she's got the most votes but it looks very likely now she doesn't have her coalition partner the one she wanted to have. good evening i'm actually joining you from cologne but yes some are clips of triumph and she was smiling very broadly but of course it's also difficult if the if she has absolute majority she cannot hide she cannot play the coalition game which she masterfully does basically the box then really stops with her and she really has to come out so. as great as this result is for the c.d.u. it might not be. desired result so who is she going to team up with the social democrats. i think as it looks now she has the absolute majority of seats in the parliament so it's really a c.d.u. c.s.u. government so if the f.t. doesn't get in one of which there's still a slight possibility then she can govern by herself or by the city you can govern

and form a government but if the f.t. comes in or if if the percentage has changed slightly of course then she has to look for coalition partners and i would think even though the s.p.d. excluded that in the complains that a great coalition or grand coalition is the most likely outcome in in that case of course this is a significant election for germany but also highly significant for europe what would him particularly those struggling eurozone countries want to see happen there . yes i mean in some ways it's a reinforcement of merkel's policy i mean she has yielded a lot she has yielded german sovereignty she has sold parts of the country to european pressure it's all about who decides what in europe i mean is a bilateral deals source the majority in which cyprus has the same voters germany going to decide in german fiscal policy and she has given away quite a bit of german national sovereignty but she's also started to rein in things and

had to play the game a bit more masterfully and so it's interesting situation to see how this comes out of course it's not really the preferred outcome for southern european countries that has now happened and what about the impact on the german people themselves what does it say about merkel as a leader heading now for her third term particularly leader during this very turbulent time for europe merkel herself is quite popular actually or accepted or respected or whatever so she has actually quite a high approval rating but in some ways the c.d.u. has taken on the liberal agenda it's taken on the social democratic agenda to become green so in a way that party has sucked up all those agendas and throw in some ways it's not surprising that comes out that strong but what it hasn't done is really represent the more let's say conservative parts and that's the reason the f.t. is really having had a surprise success in the f.t.
