playing out in real life. larry king is america's favorite fashion mentor tim gunn on his fashion bible until you have the slope occasion of america's taking over people always think that i'm going to be very critical of what they're wearing i'm not all that i say except responsibility for what you're wearing i don't care what it is sounding off on big issues facing the fashion industry but there's no reason why if a woman who's a size eighteen twenty twenty two can also look fabulous next she goes where few have gone into our closets all next on larry king now. welcome to larry king now it's coming from our home in beverly hills my wife will
9:01 pm
join us later as she's the style expert in this house and i just i'm a tenant anyway our special guest today is tim gunn tim is the fashion console and co-host of the emmy award winning reality show project runway this thursday at nine eastern eight center on lifetime he's developing a new home wares collection will last about bat he's a new york times best selling author and the paperback version of the very popular book tim tim guns factional fashion bible is out right now and i hold here in my hands you were going to go up and we're going to be looking for the cause it we're going to have a lot of fun we what do you think of braces i love them literary and i think they're very fashionable i think they're a great statement why don't more people wear them you know why because people are too lazy and it takes time to get into them and to fasten them to your pants it's i'm telling of the slope of the commission of america's taking over one is you start wearing them telling to wear them ok i'm always wearing a jacket so you don't see them oh have you always had. it's actually you know why i
9:02 pm
grew up in washington d.c. were simply no style of ole miss that famous first. we had the kennedys for a thousand is we now have mrs obama thank goodness and you know nancy pelosi leader pelosi is as far as i'm concerned the most stylish person on capitol hill bill clinton didn't toto swath oh no bill clinton certainly don't you always wear designer clothing but i don't know i actually i like shopping on a budget i really do the suit i'm wearing a spike hundred fifty dollars. the you of the casual sure i mean in shorts and bush no no does not wear shorts until you want to see my legs how about a t. shirt yeah sure you know i were a jacket if i go out alone the beach i haven't been on a beach and decades. his it is so boring. why chronicle the history of washed in fashion in this book well i have to tell you with the school
9:03 pm
of the bible i do because in a way it's my bible it's my. go to for all things about fashion and other budgets of western fashion the book is specially i'm american centric i'm very proud of american design though everything that we do in this country goes back to western europe it does. and what's so interesting about western europe and i'm going back hundreds of hundreds of years is there was always a correlation between what people wore and commerce and you see a constant change in evolution in clothing and it's a reflection of its of society culture economics politics the clothes of the roman empire the glory war like church well you know we were really talking about a basic piece of cloth that the drapes are either around your torso or over your shoulders and i was in fashion meant it was definitely in fashion and everyone wore
9:04 pm
white it looks like it will it was an unbleached cotton so very easily accessed and you didn't have to worry about drawing it but we see roman emperors and scarlet reds and purples like we're wearing the color of royalty but those diodes were very significant because they were hugely expensive and very time consuming to to work with who determines. fashion who is there is someone in the world that says next year is short skirts oh it's a conspiracy of sorts is a conspiracy on the part of the textile manufacturers the fashion editors to a lesser degree the designers they want to get on board with what ever is happening is that you have to change to create new sales yes and that's what fashion is all about it's about change i always say there's a distinct difference between fashion and clothes clothes don't have to change but by definition fashion does so if you save everything what goes around comes around
9:05 pm
. it does i will say go when we see a recycling of a style what right now but one nine hundred eighty s. are being romanced i fundamentally don't understand why you didn't like the eighty's when i was living through them. but for me it's most authentic and on us when it's looked at through a contemporary ones so there are some changes some evolution from what we saw all rejoice. and. that's what fashion is all about it's a constant constant cycle why is it hard for men. the world of style the world without why is it hard for men while. my own theory is that men want to pretend the fashion means nothing to them and i think the they feel that a conjures up a feminine side and they should be concerned with such things it's why most men. are overly casual when i feel they should be dressing up is why most men who are
9:06 pm
bachelor live like slobs they would never dream of living like this in the scrounger you must be the norm mostly comfortable in yourself i don't i am very very comfortable thank you yes i'm very proud to be who i am and i feel very lucky to have the role that i have project runway's that surprising to you the success has been. in the years right it's actually nine years twelve seasons. i don't even have the adequate words to express how i feel about it i never dreamed we'd have a season two as a matter of fact when i got involved with the show i was never to be on camera i was a consultant and i was thrown into the work room with the designers at the last minute because i believe the producers were afraid that the designers wouldn't talk they just make their work but no one would say anything so by sending me in they were sort of some dialogue but now i'm i'm flabbergasted by the whole thing is the fashion industry ruthless yes top business yes such a throat yes is there
9:07 pm
a hot new designer. there's always a hot new designer. the challenge in this industry is you're still be the hot new designer next year and chances are you are likely that you'll be gone we'll be right back with tim gunn but first let's have a look at my closet and until he says this is the room a lot of to me by sean. penn and this is why i wrote this is that i will say it's the smallest of the clauses it is those are the albums i hollywood's anymore these are my shoes of my spit collection shoes you saw my ties my braces my belt with belts with jeans sometimes on a weekend as the shirts top and bottom shirts well i'm going to run over his jeans and pants and sport jackets in the super bowl you two were supposedly working on still are shorts by color and patterns on your no slouch when it comes to shoes larry i mean i have as many as sean but now. you are a fashion icon you kidding know your you are fully brown does your hotdog when i
9:08 pm
didn't is from the first. vocal about a size twelve and over a year very vocal and i am very vocal and what he is saying well the women who are larger than us lived size twelve are really marginalized by the fashion industry and i think it's disgraceful and there's no reason why. a woman who's a size eighteen twenty twenty two can also look fabulous i'm always talking about the upper divas how great do they look they're not diminutive women gorgeous they wore on and i suspect that there are every day clothes are probably custom made because i don't think they're going to a retailer of funding things that are really appropriate for you're a woman when he won. but right now i'm bored i just felt. it's really hard for me to throw things away how do you tell people what goes let's you know i do have a certain mode of operation when it comes to that and frankly i practice it myself
9:09 pm
as i have a small new york apartment limited closet space i buy clothes i wear them on camera and i can't just i'm not going to have clothing rods and worms so i do a closet retore every six months and i and i sort of buy. what do i wear and then with them what i wear what are the what are the real soul movers what things make me feel really fantastic when i wear them and those you know you want to give and then among the things that you wear or are of a really suitable or they're really things that you want to continue to wear then there are the things that you never wear and then you have to ask yourself will you and then there are things that you may want to mend and then there are things that you know you're not going to wear because they're not in good enough shape and those things you should just throw away but the things that are are good shape that you don't wear give away to give them to a charity that's what i do want to help of priorities and if there are things with
9:10 pm
tags on them that you've never worn and that they've been in there for years i mean sometimes wonder if we discover something it's like shopping all over again you know. but i would see that why do you keep things you know in my experience show i wouldn't have this issue but in my experience women buy things aspirational a little by a size that's too small don't think i'm going to die of diet to get into this and then they don't yeah so those aspirational clothes were main dormant yeah it's terrible moment stamp and what's the biggest mistake men make they wear clothes that are too big for them plain and simple most men are wearing. jackets and pants that are one to two sizes too big and they like the way they feel comfortable and i have to tell you i don't i don't subscribe to their comfort i'm well i'm not uncomfortable in my suit but i would but it's not like wearing a pair of pajamas and i always say if you want to dress to feel as though you never
9:11 pm
got out of bed don't. stay out of it what is a piece is investment pieces that men should well as suits shoes outerwear. no i mean that and then investment is relative i mean i'm very respectful of shopping on a budget and i do it myself and i believe that when we shop on a budget we're much more mindful about how this will fit in with the rest of our wardrobe about how it will fit within with our lifestyle and how much use we'll get out of it and i find that people who spend with very deep pockets and don't who don't really think about it have have a lot of clothes that languish in their closet. so to look at me i go i go for the sales. but my snob oh god i hope no well it's dogs or people who look down and other people who are like oh no why don't you go to a goal and in fact people always think that i'm going to be very critical of what
9:12 pm
they're wearing i'm not all that i say except responsibility for what you're wearing i don't care whether dukes and i always say when when you look at the person across the room was dressed like a circus clown maybe that person who has a lot of those days maybe steensland no notice it was where i am i'm going to say with their with their sincerity in their community shawna superbly we're going on strike i'm really very impressed sean the only caution i want to present you to be honest being on these most nets shouldn't be any worse they really should they should be on shelves i thought i'd say they're going to start actually last i'm going to the good ones i know you know you foresee a. change if these are on the shelf and you put a layer of tissue paper between them it should be acid farai and you can still feel it you can still feel it and knowing how organized you are you can organize them by turtlenecks the next step is as i got this look at the outset there i you know.
9:13 pm
9:14 pm
i. think. everybody will be doing the job that you know the price is the only industry specifically mentioned in the constitution and. that's because a free and open press is critical to our democracy schreck albus. in fact the single biggest threat facing our nation today is the corporate takeover of our government and i prefaced it like the way we've been hijacked by a handful of powerful transnational corporations that will profit by destroying what our founding fathers one so that's my job mark it on this show we reveal the big picture of what's actually going on to the world we go beyond identifying the problem. rational debate and a real discussion critical issues facing america to find ready to join the movement then welcome it.
9:15 pm
was the design that well i mean the other thing is a huge amount of work went into the. amount to look at is what is this here yes it's more from the backs i mean i keep it just for. this time when i come out wearing this i don't know for what maybe that you know carol me and the woman. so i can tell you i think this is the most spectacular cause that i have ever had the privilege of entering oh i do. and it's so firmly believe that everything you say and you will wait till we keep going. i was carrying us about you know when you buy something in a store and they say it's antique is it really empty was this approach beautiful stores certainly should be or there waterborne are culpable here were i get very confused is the difference between. things that are cold antique some things that
9:16 pm
are referred to as a vintage so what's the difference well i'm not an expert by any means but i think think that it's means that it's not a bill it's on a field on the more i mean i do a lot of i'm a i'm a bibliophile and i have a lot of books not as many as you alter way to say but i i buy books online frequently and i love it when i see a vintage book and i remember purchasing only wait a minutes but he made me and i thought of something on my bookshelf right now which is just means it's out of print. so it's not being well it's interesting valentino anything that he designed and he was designing up until six seven years ago and the thing that he designed is refer to his advantage to this to distinguish it from what's being designed by the house of allen to know now that he really doesn't have his hand and so i interviewed him he's a great guy he really is going to discuss an area with you ok time game you
9:17 pm
supported gay youth right you did a clip for it gets better did i do you always been i don't know on in fact it's one of the reasons i'm have such respect and admiration for young people who are ready to declare that they are around when i was growing up. teens even into my early twenty's i knew who i wasn't but i didn't know who i was i really didn't and it was a very different time it was a very different era and i had a lot of fears about being gay and about what that actually meant. and i had already presented my family with a lot of disappointments and i didn't feel that i wanted to present them with this . and it's very funny though my mother died two years ago and. i think she a bunch figured out my sexuality. but we never talked about it my father was gone
9:18 pm
long before we never once talked about did you have a say one day i'm gay. well what i entered into were relationship you know us. people knew that was well that but that was a moment of reckoning for me to that's why when i really fully realize that this is who i am and you've been single over thirty years i have a year celibate watch you know i have to say larry. and i was in a relationship a very intense i thought beautiful incredible relationship for nine years and it ended very abruptly and it ended with my partner. i've been sleeping with just about every one imaginable i was in one thousand nine hundred two so it was the whole advent of aids broke he broke my heart and then i thought he may have given me a death sentence and i retreated into myself and i was tested for hiv every six months for twelve years to deal with the anger thank you you know
9:19 pm
after i got over the horrible feelings of of worthlessness and whoa i was just furious furious like your so on and so every time i would even contemplate another relationship i would and then get out of self-imposed. so i would just retreat don't you know mr going to miss you know i have such a rich full life i'm such a lucky guy no i really don't want to switch gears a bit you grew up in d.c. i did are you political yes i am you close with the first lady right well i decided . many times but i'm i'm at the white house annually and thought i'm going on september twentieth for the national design awards luncheon and i i adore the i adore mrs obama good in fashion oh she's the best people are constantly comparing mrs obama to jackie kennedy and i keep saying they're polarities so different i
9:20 pm
mean jackie kennedy was a rare hothouse flower kept under a bell jar is really a sure expensive designer clothes and this is obama is the most successful bull were laid a bull individual and it's a profoundly wonderful message to american women and women worldwide who was pantsuits yes. i'm just subject to the. stiff men's wear tailored pants suit i think it could be feminized. i have great respect for mrs clinton i really do i mean i do she's a powerful woman and i we should just take a note from. leader pelosi or from mrs obama and i'm sure a little more feminine today and i think that and i have to say this and i said this what in a lot of three way show on their qualities of character of women possess that most men don't and i believe that those qualities of character help women be better leaders the men i do well really i just you know i agree with you i'm on that note
9:21 pm
i'm. not right just maybe. never ever ever where you don't feel good or not you just weren't just feel so self-conscious and when you have so many other choices just find something that's had i mean maybe there's some friend you have who would be thrilled to have this. i don't like why don't you can you get up the courage to wear something that you wouldn't wear don't do what. you're going to say i should have listened to my own voice i should never doubted myself because you're not going to navigate whatever the event is with compliments people can tell you that you look fabulous and they'll be sincere if you don't feel that way doesn't matter it just doesn't matter if you have a home line coming out of its home textiles yes the betting bath yes when it's on about it will come out in spring tim gunn it's called tim gunn collection it is all about fashion and style and affordability we have some social media questions for you i'll do the first she do the miserably at ninety three as can you as tim what
9:22 pm
the most important thing is for someone trying to find their own personal style. find a style icon find someone who. you can find photos of someone who navigates the real world not just the red carpet red carpet clothes are like wedding clothes that are but i don't think the report of the real world but someone who is has your coloring hopefully is the same heights. so that when you look at them you can think ok i could potentially word that or a well with someone so where i mean for me i use george clooney well with george clooney where that's a good one you know. ok us in the twenty's not ever oh wants to know where do you find the inspiration for the colors and styles are. oh well i mean a lot of good comes from experience knowing what i feel i look good and when i see myself on camera i know what go down so purples blue was pinks. there colors
9:23 pm
that i resonate sure i stay away from oranges and yellows and any other than pink most pastels agent orange. and the little me it makes me want sallow in fact i tell women and when they're when they're thinking about a color or something but they haven't worn hold it up to your face and see how it reflects really gives you a glow that it's good and if it makes you look sallow and it flattens you out don't wear i was worried about this because green is not always good i mean it looks fabulous on your face if he is it's just it's a beautiful taller reflect the old green can be bad yes and generally flanking the darker skin is the more color options your big didn't know though as does art follow fashion or fashion follow art i'm an art school to never make up my mind because i love both. but it's a very interesting question it's very interesting i mean there's a there's
9:24 pm
a debate that my students would have and i love the debates about fashion whether it's art or whether it's design or whether it's sits in both categories or it's somewhere in the middle and an online. i have to say i believe i really believe it's design because design is problem solving and well art is problem solving amount or but you're solving a problem that you create when you're an artist when called design more than the right i do because you're you're solving someone else's problem ok we play a game called if you only knew your biggest fashion for. polio stir in the seventy's. it was his to. have much of a choice to play it was everywhere yeah it was to lie in order and well my neighbor objected. why i know that i felt so not jewish and i'm. glad it didn't say that was denim on top and. caught fire when i caught fire
9:25 pm
but my eye was someone such a one fire god i mean general restaurant in miami beach my ex-wife and suddenly a table of firemen were coming to the restaurant and there were five men on the job stone crabs a true story of never told on the air and i really smelly and a man of the bench they were comes over to me and pours water on me i said i'm suit was burning i was smoking in the cigarette court and my peer ta god. i remember that suit. are you going to hear it i don't want to talk it was. no parents practice it was a great she was and i don't want to offend any of your canadian viewers but you know what the cold what a canadian tuxedo. favorite project runway moment oh i have to say episode one season one when we took the designers to a grocery store for the challenge they thought we were going to some high end
9:26 pm
fabric store there thinking couture thinking ground as a leader in the grocery store face with ears of corn. as a great moment best thing about your job oh the diversity of it's the fact that i were so many have never tire of any of them i'm a lucky guy what's the best advice you've ever received. be true to who you are to speak true to who you were they were designed. not for not for me personally but but just in general. a fabulous incredible woman the president of the council of fashion designers of america the creator of an iconic design that will be part of fashion history forever diane von furstenberg really yes a great great great of the rich and what is she designed the will for of the brow stress you know show us i certainly will wrap dress abrupt runways this bracelet
9:27 pm
a lot she's under attack on some sites so i really believe. that phrase out on that note we're going to read her out i know that tim gunn only had given jones fashion model one for his house wares and his shoes sheets and everything telling them spring and look for him on the runway thank you sean for joining us by. the. world. science technology innovation all the latest developments from around russia we've got this huge area covered. i know c.n.n. the m.s.m. b.c. fox news have taken some not slightly but the fact is i admire their commitment to cover all sides of the story just in case one of them happens to be accurate. that
