2:04 pm
of edward snowden leaving moscow's sheremetyevo airport was the only evidence he's alive well and in russia since after getting in that cab the only thing we're told about him is that he's somewhere in a safe place well this week america's most wanted man returned to the public eye snowden appeared on camera meaning other former u.s. security service officials turned whistleblowers they flew into moscow to warn him with the sam adams prize for intelligence and integrity the whistleblower awards. this time snowden leaks his personal view on the fate of those spilling official secrets this letter still you know you think of where we have an executive order just this one last. night live to come. on but they're stuck at the. first song pull the trigger. the whistle blowers who awarded him paid

a visit to our moscow studio as well but it was a long awaited family reunion that was likely to have been the highlight of his week i cannot speak for my son and really the legal issues i'm his father mr snowden sr was finally able to make it to moscow after months of being separated from his son washing his feet played out in global headlines but i don't want to really share my opinions at this point in time i'm shipley thankful that my son is safe and free free in russia but wanted at home before arriving in the transit zone of moscow's sheremetyevo airport the former n.s.a. contractor leaked thousands of documents with details of how u.s. security services spy on officials and ordinary people all across the world washington has been calling for his extradition accusing him of espionage but russia granted snowden temporary asylum lawyer say his father may not be the only family member heading over to visit since it's really unclear whether the former
2:06 pm
n.s.a. contractor will ever be able to return to the u.s. again you've got to come off r t moscow well the n.s.a. leaker's fate has been the main focus of discussion in our studio this week as we interviewed the group of former u.s. officials turned whistle blowers who boarded snowden full integrity and intelligence and discussed how the american fugitive on the run is getting used to his new life in russia and what his main concerns will. i think he's doing remarkably well under the circumstances in which he came here and we've we've obviously came to find out personally i was you know what are you looking at these days. i thought he looked great he seemed very centered and and. brilliant smart funny very engaged. i thought he looked very well considering the amount of pressure he's a do you think that's taking any toll at all and the psychological toll i think it would in ordinary circumstances but this is an extraordinary person he's made his peace with what he did he's convinced
2:07 pm
a deep what he did was right he has no regrets and he's willing to face whatever the future holds for him is that the person you saw in front of you colin yes actually we discussed this intel integrity and intelligence issue quite extensively and we talked about prior examples of great people in history that had themselves been under this type of pressure and he's remarkably centered i found that continuing pattern the more secret the us became and the more we grew into a surveillance state the more people who were willing to just do their job and tell the truth and obey ethics rules were getting in trouble so while i suffered i was under criminal investigation and put on the no fly list things like that i thought were very draconian i could never have imagined in a million years that president obama would begin indicting and prosecuting people like thomas drake and edward snowden and bradley manning and john kiriakou and
2:08 pm
a number of other people under the espionage act which is the most serious charge you could level against an american what was the reaction from snowden last night when you told him that he had won this civil war he already knew because we awarded to two months ago that the problem was getting it to him and it is our tradition starting with colin that we physically present this is sort of like an emmy or an oscar what it is is a candlestick holder for someone who has shown a bright light into the dark corners. so he knew he was he didn't know about the candlestick holder he knew that he had richie the award and he knew we were coming and the reception we was just so far as warming it was a person who now realizes that he has very senior people alumni you know and some of the size senior people who speak for a lot of people still within these organizations that admired greatly where they would snowed. and hopefully will summon the courage to follow his example.
2:09 pm
also discussed snowden and security in an exclusive interview with wiki leaks julian assange the full interview is available right now on our website r.t. dot com. we're getting reports now all here on r.t. that several massive blasts of hit damascus the first one reportedly rocked a local t.v. station the second one targeted the four seasons hotel now that's where the u.n. chemical experts are staying there are also reports of a third explosion as well as shelling of the t.v. station there in damascus well we'll bring you more as we get it here on r.t. for. the four days left until the united states defaults on its debt that is unless its leaders and two weeks of deadlock that has seen hundreds of thousands temporarily laid off and vast swathes of government shutdown even the

world bank's chief declared the situation is desperate warning of impending disaster results is miniport now found out for some careers come first. u.s. president barack obama's signature health care legislation is supposed to provide to millions of americans with the medical coverage they desperately need but the political debate over obamacare has also ironically created a life or death situation for hundreds of citizens for each week the shutdown continues roughly two hundred patients cannot be accepted for clinical treatment at the national institutes of health that's nearly four hundred sick americans desperately in need of medical treatment and the and i says among the patients being turned away includes roughly thirty people with cancer and many of them being children about seventy five percent of and i was employees thousands of people have reportedly been furloughed because of washington's self-inflicted shutdown as
2:11 pm
a result michelle langbehn who is battling sir coma a rare form of cancer was supposed to begin receiving medical treatments at the beginning of this month until the october first shutdown forced and i to temporarily turn her away langbehn a new mothers started an online petition to put pressure on congress to reopen the government the movement has garnered more than one hundred thousand signatures in an interview with r.t. langbehn says she's been able to restart her treatments after receiving financial donations but says hundreds of other people in her position have been denied a chance to live because of washington's political partisanship it's a matter of life or death it's not a matter of inconvenience or just an irritation for us i have heard a couple of instances where they find that this is just the game between them and it's a matter of winning and i'd like to say that it's not a matter of when or lose i mean it's please listen to the people and know that it's

affecting so many u.s. leaders who have the power to change this situation have so far failed to agree on a budget a political deadlock leaving the lives of cancer stricken. adults and children in the reporting from new york marina port not artsy. renowned american political commentator known chomsky told us that he believes the united states is turned into a one party state ruled by the business policy succession in the history of parliamentary democracy it's interesting to see what's happened. there have been significant economic changes in the past generation where the economy struck no time to go into it but one of the effects of the strangers specifically the new liberal programs and they're having the same kind of effect where they were. the. direct wealth to a very narrow sectors the increase in inequality it was an immediate effect on

politics in a parliamentary democracy as higher begets more concentrated political power of those as well so by now elections are almost boy it's so plutocracy democracy both political parties have drifted to the right the u.s. is still one party state the business party. here moscow stay with us for more international news after the break. i'm talking about edward snowden and you know that some americans believe he's a hero only for the criminal. i believe he's a hero and i believe he's coming directly from his heart that he feels some goodness that he wants to be truthful to the american people that he believes in and loves his country america so strongly and i wish that somebody in the same

is the weekly here on activists have held dozens of rallies as part of a global day of action against genetically modified foods with biotech giant monsanto bearing the brunt of their anger organizers say four hundred cities across the world stretching from australia to europe were involved they say crops grain from seeds made by the company can be dangerous to human health and some of the biggest took place in the united states where people also accuse the multi-national company of aggressive lobbying and suppressing food safety research and he said that he is in washington. many cities across the u.s. took part in this second organize march against the agricultural giant monsanto protesters rallying against the company's use of genetically modified organisms and trying to raise awareness about its corporate practices some protesters told us that even though the government is shut down months onto a lobbyist are hard at work here in washington many pouncers by actually came up to
2:16 pm
activists what we were standing there holding anti g.m.o. signs and asked what is the g.m.o. so awareness is very low in terms of what exactly genetically modified foods are let alone the dangers they cause in the capital the protests began with activists going into large grocery stores and retailers trying to ways raise awareness about controversal insecticides which affect the nervous system and have been repeatedly linked to death while the demonstration then made its way to the white house all sorts of activists students even young children our gannett farmers caterers chefs so real wide range of people there are a lot of veterans actually showed up to talk about the dangers of g m o's just outside the white house they then began to march made their way to the i.m.f. world bank and eventually to monsanto offices here in washington d.c. now other cities across the u.s. los angeles portland denver orlando just to name
2:17 pm
a few how similar demonstrations also up in canada and vancouver british columbia there was quite a large turnout for their march against monsanto organizers say this is just the beginning that momentum is going to pick up and they will continue their fight against the g.m.o. giant monsanto reporting from washington and us in our way our chief. british euro skeptics are whipping up a storm over a dramatic rise in the number of immigrants from europe now calling the u.k. home a recent report says six hundred thousand of them or one percent of the entire population are unemployed and nearly costing taxpayers more than a billion pounds and health care costs alone more now with the chair of the bruges group think tank joining me live from london but the report found that most of those who come to britain they're looking for jobs are not looking for handouts so their intentions are all the fuss because isn't that what the british economy needs people willing to work hard for a little less. well people should be getting
2:18 pm
a reasonable wage but the situation where people are coming in from predominantly eastern europe such as poland and no doubt more will follow from rumania from the first of january when they can seek employment here is of course undermining native british people and of course they are working for less so the wages are being depressed and of course british people are finding that they're left on the scrap heap so to speak they can't find work not willing to work perhaps as hard as some people form eastern europe so of course they're then tracting welfare dependency and of course not everybody coming here is actually coming here for work some are coming here to use the national health service which is free and of course the point of delivery and of course some are claiming benefits in duncan smith the secretary of state for pensions and social security he could be as much as two billion pounds is being spent on welfare support of migrants and of course there's
2:19 pm
also pressure on school and housing in london the cost of rent has gone up enormously because there's just so much demand and a lot of that is people who are moving into london from all over europe and of course is to having a lot of pressure so even those that are coming here to work is creating a system which is undermining british people in the workplace but it's pressure that has i think out of the u.k. government been quite selective on its handouts and that's what is important at odds over with the e.u. over discriminate discrimination against migrants specifically london saying that some migrants should be banned from certain handouts but rules are rules these are members of e.u. states so doesn't everybody deserve what's on offer. all british taxpayers' money should primarily be spent on british citizens and we have a problem in the u.k. we have a problem with social services being overloaded we have a problem with excessive demand for housing we have
2:20 pm
a problem of british people on unemployment benefits they can't find work we have a problem of people coming here to claim benefits that does exist to a degree so really the ball should change yes european union law does state that there should be no discrimination regardless of what country a citizen or someone comes from but of course that shouldn't be the case british borders should be managed according to the needs of this country farther than being dictated to by brussels so should you change your attitude is what look at a complete overhaul of the relationship between the u.k. and the e.u. or simply for the u.k. to get out and then close its doors and stop immigration. well yes we should leave the european union we would be we would be better off but of course the situation isn't so much as closing doors it's about inviting in those that will benefit the british economy the most so we have
2:21 pm
a system of work permits we can still be open to people from other countries if they have a particular skill that this country needs if they have something that they can invest in the u.k. and they can be of benefit but to have no safeguards to happen as many as twenty nine million people from maine. as well as other people from poland and the other eastern european states that join the e.u. in two thousand and four is of course an unintelligent policy we need an intelligent immigration policy that suit british needs and where we can supply services for those who are actually contributing in the u.k. wider than this open door coach we have at the moment robert good to get your thoughts robert oulds chair of the group think thank you joining us live there in the u.k. really appreciate your thoughts thank you thank you my. rock police have dispersed a protest against the ruling family in bahrain's capital manama the rally started
2:22 pm
at the funeral of a sheer detainees who died in a prison hospital security forces reportedly used buckshot. injuring several demonstrators docked another day for the head of the bahrain rehabilitation an anti violence organization spoke to a little earlier she said the police often target ship funerals. it's getting like a practice by the security forces that. are the. relations specialist and the. did one is this related to our political. comedy and is that literally the mask. during the if you're knows there are many. attack and happen the other common practice. time for a look at some other world news this hour here in r.t. a stampede on a bridge at a hindu temple in northern india has killed at least eighty nine pilgrims dozens
2:23 pm
were also injured as huge crowds attended a religious festival reports say police used battens to restore order which cause an even greater panic a stampede began when a group claimed the bridge was about to collapse in order to speed up killing. explosions of once again ripped through iraq official said at least thirty one have died and dozens have been wounded blast took place and seven cities across the country mostly targeting crowded outdoor markets and bus stops one of them hit a gathering of mourners for the seventeen victims of saturday's attack you see as massive surge of violence has already claimed more than six thousand lives. in australia a huge farfield by high winds and dry conditions as force one of our fellows and people to evacuate from the site of the olympics held in the year two thousand and three were treated after breathing in smoke it took fifty firefighters to bring the blaze under control is just one of a number of fires to swept across the eastern state of new south wales in the last
2:24 pm
twenty four hours. and also in our world update this building collapse has left five people buried and sixteen injured in northwest china on saturday the bodies of four workers have since been recovered while the search continues for the one remaining. victim eyewitnesses say the construction site had twenty people working on the roof and five on the first floor when the accident happened because of the collapse as being in vesta gated. return to our breaking news this hour now has several massive blasts of ripped through damascus one of them reportedly targeting the hotel where the u.n. chemical experts are staying. is near the explosion spot and she joins me live now so paula tell us more what do you know and what have you seen since your actually there in damascus. well within the last twenty minutes there were two
2:25 pm
massive explosions here in downtown damascus they seem to have happened in the square which is about two hundred meters from where i'm talking to you from from the initial reports that we're receiving it seems as if one was right in front of the syrian t.v. and we are seeing some footage being circulated online by liberals saying that their target is the syrian t.v. the location of the square is not so far from the four seasons hotel now this is where your foreign inspectors who have been in the country for some two weeks investigating syria's chemical weapons stockpiles are staying just this morning they were warnings posted by armed rebels warning civilians to stay away from military checkpoints and i mention this because the square which is very close to where we're staying is something that we drive past several times a day in fact we drove past about an hour ago and there are several checkpoints there indeed it's very difficult entering and leaving the square with the military
2:26 pm
constantly checking papers and making sure who's entering and who's leaving as you can well imagine the information at this stage is very preliminary in the last twenty minutes we've heard a number of ambulances hovering past we're also hearing reports that there are civilian casualties just in the last minute i was told that there is at least one person who did we do expect that count to climb because these blasts were massive and as i'm talking to you we can actually still smell the aftermath of the explosions they happened as i say some two hundred meters from here and as i'm speaking to you now i'm also hearing further gunfire just a short distance from here there have been numerous targets and concerns that the syrian t.v. wolf will be attacked so we are working on a story where we've been talking to people inside syrian t.v. and many of them have. the same concern and that is that the syrian t.v. is
2:27 pm
a target from armed groups because they criticize it for promoting in their words propaganda we are hearing that the syrian t.v. building was slightly damaged we do know that one of the t.v. stations that broadcast from within the building the virus station has gone off air and hasn't resumed broadcasting and as i say we are continuing to receive updates the situation so very tense and at the moment a little bit confused here in the syrian capital paula thanks very much indeed for the update. and of course we'll bring you more on the legs events there in syria in the next hour. very shortly after the break you can find out the views on the n.s.a. leaks scandal from apple's co-founder in a program well it's upon stay with us that you can.
2:28 pm
i recently read headlines all over the russian internet screaming in full paranoia mode that china has just bought five percent of ukraine now they're writing that china will lease five percent of ukraine over ukrainian officials themselves claim that china won't be getting either and that this is a deal about some drip irrigation system the situation didn't explode onto the internet to the fantasies of bloggers the south china morning post reported that one company does have a crop in pig farming plant design utilized nine percent of ukraine's territory also last year the ban on foreigners buying land in ukraine. been lifted although i am the distrustful pro sovereignty type getting a rich foreign country to pay to develop your nation's agriculture might not be too bad of a deal it would definitely take a lot of money to restore ukraine's farming to its former glory they see that ukraine used to be the bread basket of europe agree that status spec could really help the country but selling off or even just leasing nine percent of the nation's territory is absolutely unacceptable doing a large project with the chinese that is mutually beneficial is one thing but
2:29 pm
selling or leasing off your country is another and by another i mean treason but that's just my opinion. hello and welcome to the party it came the promise of liberation from hype labor but some turned into yet and not at the action is technology getting more. and it's taking from it well to discuss that i'm knowledge joined by a co-founder of apple and a gold like figure in the steve wozniak he said was nick thank you very much for being on the show i know that you describe yourself as an agnostic or an atheist but it seems wherever you go you're being warship how does it fail. you know what i am so glad.
