very good morning to you from the entire news team. live in moscow it's an hour just after eight. it may only be four years old and an experiment but bit calling is now a global currency complete with its own and so far only a.t.m. and the first machine has been set up in a cafe in vancouver where people can exchange the digital currency for cash and achievement jeffrey albert tucker from the foundation for economic education calls simply spectacular. a year ago this time i thought it was insane i mean i thought well this is just another student technology you know they come along every few days and they flame out so i'm a fairly recent convert the more i look into it the more confident i'm getting that the future of monetary system is crude cryptography and this kind of crypto market based currency it's quite spectacular and i tell you it only use it only takes a few times using brick when you realize this is incredibly easy it's much much
12:02 am
easier than credit cards and there's no danger of fraud or identity theft or all these other things that come with the old fashioned credit card system it's just a superior technology a bit coin exchanges and brokers have popped up all over the world and even china's largest search engine now except payment in the digital currency and we're also told it could well become better of the dominant legal tender really it's funny that it to be an alternative currency and there's no reason why it can't itself become a means of a cap and calculation so you can do your accounting then in fact people do this all the time and you can enter into the economy because fear and live a wonderful life meaning that you can bypass government currency entirely the u.s. is now restricting what's called money exchange businesses so there's so much high costs associated with a.t.m.'s it doesn't surprise me that it started in canada

rather than the us the us would lose out if it continues this trend towards regulating cryptocurrency now it may be popular and demand but it coin has had more than its fair share of controversy and turbulence money laundering concerns and shut the online activities have sent its price skyrocketing then collapsing and then recovering all over again at the latest incidents or an f.b.i. raid on silk road and online drug marketplace that dealt in bed coins mitchell demeter the chief bit court officer bit coin e.-x. he told my colleague kevin allen the currency has huge potential. i think it definitely has the potential to be revolutionary it basically gets your cash into a digital form where you can send it around the world instantly with no middleman what do the authorities think about it i mean there's an element of course there's been a worry that it's going to come be transparent untraceable dodgy dealings could be done with it what are you doing to cope. we've got any money laundering policy in

place where we limit users to three thousand dollars per day every transaction you make is recorded on a public ledger your name is attached to it but if somebody wants to find out who was making that transaction it can be done the silk road was a perfect example of the end up shutting down the silk road that was they could be squee the black market e.-bay and they actually shut that down which is actually a very good thing for the currency as a whole as a lot of you will associate it associated because we're in just directly with the silk road and so since it's been shut down the currency did dip about ten percent for both twelve hours and since then people realise that it's not just about the black market and it's actually a legitimate currency and it's actually gone up one hundred percent since then. now you can find out exactly how bitcoin works and why it's become such a magnet for controversy on our web site dot com still last to come for you the program here on. big brother the brick group of emerging economies say they don't

want to be spied on by america the plan to build a new secure. from washington's on. entering the home stretch. of the olympic city is called the one hundred day mark until the winter games opening ceremony. it's good to have you with us here in our t. today justice seeking journey of thousands of miles from one pakistani family which survived a cia drone strike is now culminated in the testimony in front of a u.s. congressman the strike killed a grandmother but failed to hit any militants so the victims of the bombing are asking lawmakers why america targeted their home in the first place at the briefing . this was the first time actual victims of u.s. drone strikes were in congress and apart from the congressman who initiated this
12:06 am
briefing i saw only four other members of congress it's no secret the u.s. congress generally approves of growth strikes so it's very difficult to expect a sudden change of heart even though hard was what these drone victims were appealing through on a par with twenty fourth of last year a u.s. drone strike left this pakistani family devastated the nine year old girl and her thirteen year old brother nearly escaped death that day their sixty seven year old grandmother was killed vegetable garden. i no longer love blue skies i prefer the gray skies the drones do not fly when this kinds agree and for a short period of time the mental tension and fear eases between this kind of the drones return and so does the fear you know this family has never been abroad out of their home in north waziristan and the father of this family said he looked at the life around here. he wished his children to be able to walk the streets not afraid of being bombed at any moment. my mother was killed my children were injured
12:07 am
i'm so glad that people are going to hear our story that's why we came to america we have no idea why our village in my house was targeted. the family came to washington of course hoping to get answers for why they have to live in fear every day i have no idea why my grandmother was killed when the drone hate i was outside with my grandmother everything became dark i was scared so i started to run then i noticed my hand was bleeding so i tried to clean my hand but blood kept coming out but i was very scared so i just kept running. we also learned that the u.s. government did not grant these to the lawyer of this family prominent practice any warrior who has sued the cia in the past on behalf of the victims of drone strikes in pakistan four hundred fifty thousand population of more. looing in a concentration camp where they're being picked on this is off what kind of. if
12:08 am
someone has long for someone driving. less you he said this is how the being targeted and at the same time do not really in a position to leave the area the purpose of this briefing was to put a human face to drone strikes there's a short chance that in congress the tragedy of this family will fall on deaf ears but there is hope that the public will take notice in washington i'm going to check out. being one of the toughest opponents of america's drone warfare u.s. representative alan grayson he's the man behind the visit of the rockman family to his country speaking to r.t. he said he believes the pakistani army is completely capable of handling all the militants itself. pakistan is the third largest recipient of military aid from the united states and year after year receives approximately a billion dollars in aid why you ask yourself why are we doing this when there are alternative means that come nowhere close to doing this kind of harm to innocents
12:09 am
and inflaming foreign public opinion for instance given the fact that we are giving a billion dollars a year to pakistan while we have the pakistani army arrest the one hundred or two hundred or even five hundred militants that we believe could possibly one day pose some kind of threat to the united states i know what's good for america's foreign wars is also when it's crime fighting which list. has now said he too wants. to get the lowdown on the crime scenes and stop the drugs or process state that's online right now. even from friends. september's g twenty. the secrets of politicians that story right now.

policies. claims two thirds of its citizens are against directly propping up the noncompetitive industry and the so-called green levies make up a hefty part of average energy bills and any predicted to snowball if indeed they proceed with its program policies are reporting from london. joking about the weather may be a british foible but nowadays it can make or break a household budget winter is setting in as our announcements that energy prices are set to rise yes again now roughly ten percent of the u.k.'s average household energy bill is made up of so-called green taxes and the prime minister david cameron has pledged to do away with them in order to help out struggling brits now the ideas proved popular for a country battling with austerity according to a recent poll by savation some sixty percent of brits object to having to shell out
12:13 am
for the green levies. but. you know about what it is cost to wait and see if it's right things cheaper things to go to really not prefer the profits an option really reduces terms that moyo be well spun loveseat might see bills come down to hear us about shadow of a doubt opposition leader ed miliband says that green levy's aunt to blame for britain's high energy prices but the government figures show that green taxes are at one hundred twelve pounds to the average household energy bill in the u.k. now roughly half that money goes toward supporting cleaner greener energy such as solar panels like the ones like a tit on the roof of london's blackfriars train station but as the latest survey shows for the brits counting the pennies to keep warm this winter concern for the environment is going to have to come in second from now. r.t. london meanwhile germany's energy giant warned the country's swift switch to green
12:14 am
power could backfire due to the prospect of blackouts and there are fears that in the worst case scenario a one hour blackout across the state my cost almost six hundred million euros and professor dr dr frank andrews from the university of technology he believes that energy safety comes at a very high cost. there's one principle problem if you rely on winter not all energy you have to be aware of that you for all the energy if when the wind blows or if when the sun shines if there's not a case of no energy so if you have industry country which needs a base lot of energy you need a backup power plant so we haven't germany know of a situation. that we build more and more with moves more and more solar panels but they will never deliver you a stable energy and so we have coal powered coal fired power plants and this will
12:15 am
increase the cost and in germany i'm as mentioned we have a situation that in principle nuclear power plants are forbidden so they are no longer accepted by the people and therefore these renewable energies are a go or because renewable energies are regarded as without any alternative. and as are germany turned its back on its old energy industries we travel to the north of england to see what happened when industrial towns were consigned to the scrap coming up a bit later in the program here on r.t. we meet the locals who are fighting to heal back the rust and get the former industrial heartland beating once again. for now on the program the head of u.s. intelligence james clapper has defended america's spying policy in front of a senate panel he said collecting and analyzing intentions of foreign leaders is indeed a top tenet that's been his response to the flood of international outrage of course
12:16 am
after the scope of u.s. surveillance activities worldwide was revealed i mean while one of america's spying targets brazil has been calling for a new secure cyberspace to be created to prevent u.s. wiretapping and ideas receive the backing of the other brics nations russia india china and south africa who are now all considering letting a vast network of data cables immune to n.s.a. snooping technology now this could be a great solution says jeremy zimmerman is from the internet liberties and digital rights advocacy group so when the cable ends up in the us then n.s.a. as full access if the cable ends up somewhere else then it's yours to try to secure that access then of course there are the questions i mean the hardware that will be used on both ends of those cables is one point for interception and of course if those cables are used to make information transit the web sites are set such as google or facebook all the web sites in which n.s.a.
12:17 am
has full access it won't solve the question of privacy invasion on a massive scale by the n.s.a. i hope those governments along with laying down those new cables will for instance invest in new industrial policy is where they would foster the development of free labor of software and. essentially services and then to an encryption to put back in the hands of their citizens ways of gaining back control of the technology with all the new cables in the world people will keep believing that they can trust google facebook apple and microsoft then they will send all their lives to to the n.s.a. so of course it has to be a broader set of technological solutions and political solutions and also social solutions so does the u.s. president have any control over the n.s.a.'s activities it was in fact behind america's vast spying network just some of the questions discussed today and people
12:18 am
of l's cross-talk program you can watch it at seven thirty g.m.t. for now though a very quick preview. what jay carney the president spokesman said is you know the president knew nothing about it however the n.s.a. is doing a great job what they're doing anyway so it really does raise some very troubling issues does the president have control over the n.s.a. does seem though i mean even more seriously was this an operation approved under president george w. bush that's gone on and they've not bothered to inform the president the united states is being run by remote control by a group of corrupt companies and these companies want the n.s.a. to find out secrets trade secrets from all the companies in the world this is this is what they're doing this is unacceptable the american people deserve a better government than this. or live from moscow it's our wait for the start of the twenty fourteen soccer winter

olympic winter olympics it's now a cross the one hundred day mark of the games clocks in the russian capital and the host city have both switched to counting down the home stretch and artie's paul scott reports from sochi now the hard work and preparations there is certainly speeding up. the message from the organizes is that sochi will be ready but it's actually been a rather low key affair to mark one hundred days until the start of the games the feeling in the city is that the hard work needs to continue the new president of the international olympic committee has been on a tour of some of the venues over the last twenty four hours or so he's been to the main media center he's been to the athletes village and he's been to the fixed olympic stadium which is going to host the opening and closing ceremony says that he thinks the venues are impressive and that he's confident that the athletes are going to be delighted with them over the course of the next three months they're going to be one hundred seventeen different tests on those venues they're going to

conferences rehearsals and sporting contest to make sure that all venues are up to operational standards but the feeling in sochi is right now as the clock begins its countdown to the hard work needs to continue to ensure that come february the seventh they say it say is ready to welcome the sporting world. no olympics of course can start without the traditional flame from the start of a journey and through its most spectacular points. trip sometimes even the ones carrying the flame. and see the most amazing pictures of the day the torch relay. is on a big journey. one hundred twenty three days. through two. cities of russia. really fourteen people. or sixty killing. in

a recent article in the economist magazine ticket one step further suggesting that rather than further investment in places like middlesbrough or burnley and whole decaying towns and cities should be left behind it's true that economically britain remains a deeply divided country but with all this talk of failing towns and cities we thought we'd come and speak to some of the people who actually live in them and find out what they have to say about it all and say we've come to the market town of burnley in lancashire in the north west of the country. so. people services. burnley's friendly and hot. and good a football. needs help i'm going to leeds hope for being here. because i don't envy year in my. opinion might speak divided but burnley

hey guys i'm abby martin and this is breaking the set on this day last year new york new jersey we're getting wrecked by superstorm hurricane sandy overall the storm cost the city's sixty five billion dollars and took months of cleanup efforts no doubt it was a devastating storm and as we look back one year later what have we learned for the next time a storm this size hits we do know that the subway system will probably be shut down again due to massive flooding keep in mind there are still hundreds of people living out of hotels because they don't have a home to return to i'm sure congress eventually agreed to send fifty one billion dollars in relief to the victims of sandy but we don't know where that money went according to national center for disaster preparedness only twenty three percent has been the first of the agencies directly involved in relief efforts and only fifteen percent of that has actually reached the hands of the victims but
12:29 am
a lack of financial aid isn't the only glaring problem here those who were fortunate enough to rebuild post sandy are doing so in locations that are red zones for flooding related disasters in the future basically they're setting themselves up for disaster all over again which brings us to the elephant in the room and no i'm not talking about chris christie i'm talking about climate change half of the politicians out there want to stick their heads in the sand and keep denying the obvious fact that climate change isn't only real it's already happening and thanks to sea levels rising at an alarming rate we sure to see some hurricane sandy style flooding or worse much more frequently according to a recent and a report meanwhile our do nothing congress wants to do nothing about climate change or carbon emission problems while the country they're representing continues to suck up twenty five percent of the world's energy and until we all wake up and acknowledge the serious problems on the horizon disasters like sandy could become the norm.
