my. talks over iran's nuclear program and in arguments and no agreement with iran condemning france for defending israel who completely rejected the proposals. this british listening post on the roof. is allegedly being used to intercept communications from the german parliament and. revelations like these are pushing some to stand up for privacy the don't share our information about our customers if you don't have a warrant we meet the owner of a tiny tech company resisting the far reaching operations of u.s. spy agencies. this week a space walk starring the olympic torch russian cosmonauts take the winter games symbol into outer space for the first time in history.
12:01 pm
back at the top stories and the latest developments this is the weekly. six world powers failed to make a breakthrough in the latest round of talks over iran's nuclear program france has refused to accept any short term deal stalling the discussions with iran's supreme leader accusing paris of open hostility towards tehran negotiations are set to resume in ten days from now before that a team of high ranking u.s. officials will brief the israeli government on the results of this week's meeting. as more. a delegation of high ranking american officials is due to arrive in jerusalem today sunday now they will update the government on these weekend talks that took place in geneva about iran's nuclear program the talks took place between
12:02 pm
iran and six world powers they began last thursday and they ran until saturday this was an unscheduled extension the israelis will be briefed by the american delegation on these talks as well as the gaps that remain at the same time the u.s. secretary of state john kerry is flying to abu dhabi now there he will be meeting with the foreign minister of the united arab emirates and he'll be updating him on the iranian negotiations the u.a.e. along with saudi arabia and bahrain have been staunch opponents of any kind of agreement between iran and world powers and as i say israel is involved on this issue part of the criticism about the talks is that although iran will be receiving economic incentives as part of a deal the understanding from the israeli side is that these would be tolerable adjustments that would not threaten the viability of the entire sanctions regime against iran now france has led the opposition to the current version of an
12:03 pm
agreement with iran and one of the concerns that was expressed by the french was that the agreement narrowed differences but did not infect eliminate them one of the comments made by the french foreign minister was that fonts did not want to be part of what he called a con game the important point however to make is that iran is and was ready to strike a deal the big obstacle appears to be the future of iran's plutonium reactor which is that iraq which could provide a nother route for a nuclear weapons program this facility which is currently being built is due to become operational mixture the french may also be concerned that iran is trying to speed up the start up to date whether iraq is a groundbreaker is certainly still not clear but it is part of the major stumbling block as to why the talks failed these past few days the talks are due to resume in ten days time. well let's take a closer look at the main negotiation points world powers want to run to downgrade
12:04 pm
all uranium enrichment at the five percent level which is considered fuel grade now iran should also limit the number of centrifuges and allow more monitoring of its facilities in return for the un freezing of terrans assets and the easing of sanctions former advisor to iran's nuclear negotiation team cover believes that tehran has demonstrated it is ready to negotiate in good faith but was dissing the contribution of the french guy or a man to throw some in the process and managed to sabotage did deal basically there's a very strong pro israel lobby in paris. it is of course the relations between paris and tel aviv there's no doubt in anyone's mind that dealing with good intentions with a detailed proposal and prove their good faith in their negotiations is nor died in my man and minds of a lot of other people including millions in iran that
12:05 pm
a lot of the responsibility for the absence of a deal tonight rests on the shores of the french government when in the latest round of talks international mediators were ready to release about three billion dollars worth of frozen iranian assets and lift restrictions on the gold chemical and car industries and a professor of political science period believes tough sanctions are taking a toll not only on iran but on those imposing them as well. well u.s. and french company is are in the starting blocks there are bank in the lifting of sanctions and they want to resume trade with iran for obvious economic reasons like for example the car manufacturer to jacques major french car company is really just started business so it's pushing for a new agreement. hopes were high ahead of these nuclear talks with iran's new president hassan rouhani adopting a softer stance than his predecessor. but
12:06 pm
hard line conservatives back home are not at all happy with attempts to engage with the u.s. as we find out later in our report coming up in the program this hour. first britain is operating a listening post in the heart of the german capital allegedly targeting the parliament and the chancellor's office and revelations based on leaked documents hit a raw nerve in berlin which is already trying to get proper explanations from the u.s. over its tapping of anglin the calls for and we just believe the eavesdropping equipment is installed right here on the roof of the u.k. embassy within a stone's throw of the bundestag it's allegedly capable of intercepting phone calls a long distance communications all across the city yemeni demanded explanations from london pointing out that intercepting data in diplomatic buildings is a violation of international law but the u.k. simply said it won't comment on intelligence matters of agenda stumble from the
12:07 pm
german power a party says berlin actually knew its allies were listening in the german government of course did notice what was happening on the roof top of the u.s. embassy and the u.k. embassy because it's clear for everybody who looks at that building what's going on there but i think that the german interior secret service they are not allowed to investigate on the las and this is simply because germany right now is such a class partner of the of the u.s. and they want to become a first class partner so our government is simply selling our privacy and their own privacy to climb up the ladder. in the face of america's far reaching surveillance program hardly any tech company can now guarantee one hundred percent privacy but it is more important that the owner of a small provider who has so far managed to prevent government spying. we decided open a data center and here we're taking an exclusive tour through one of the few data

companies standing up to the us government in the name of privacy i think we do residential are very well pete ashdown is the owner of x. mission and independent internet service provider based in salt lake city utah this tower here handles most of our e-mail unlike most power players in silicon valley x. mission refuses to give the n.s.a. backdoor access to its networks since one thousand nine hundred ninety eight its mission has rejected a judge in the u.s. government for more information stored on private servers like these we don't share our information about our customers if you don't have a warrant the majority of law enforcement requests ashdown says he's received and refused have been subpoenaed as lacking accountability and necessary approval by a judge this is actually an amiga since launching his company in one thousand nine hundred three ashdown says he's filled no more than two customer data requests from

the federal government your. money the current climate of america's unrestrained surveillance matrix has been facilitated by a corporations who have spent years secretly working with the n.s.a. regulation government contracts and. monetary. compensation are in my opinion the three reasons why they're cooperating ironically utah is probably the most unlikely home for a privacy champion roughly twenty seven miles away from x. mission. is the n.s.a.'s newly constructed one point five billion dollar data center i think it's a stain on the tech industry of utah all the n.s.a. activities are a stain on american internet businesses ashdown has vowed to face jail time if that's what's needed to protect his customers from being monitored what surprises this fourth amendment advocate is that big data companies like google won't promise

to do the same marina port r.t. utah. typhoon haiyan may have left up to ten thousand people dead in the philippines and that's according to local officials although the government says that cannot be confirmed. a name brand that we see here is just. the storm is the fourth most powerful tropical cyclone ever recorded and the strongest to hit the region central city of tacloban was ravaged by the disaster leaving thousands of homes without the red cross has only been able to confirm one thousand two hundred deaths so far but believes many more have lost their lives many of the worst hit areas remain cut off for the rescue operations china has also ordered a state of emergency in its southern regions and right now the storm is moving northwest and it was ready to reach vietnam's coastline thirteen provinces there are being evacuated with eight hundred sixty thousand people forced to flee coastal areas the storm could reach the capital hanoi on monday morning
12:11 pm
we're just a click away we keep you updated on the devastation left by this massive storm had to r.t. dot com for the latest reports and pictures from the scene. you're watching a weekly here on r.t. coming up later in the program we have the latest report on life in guantanamo bay . i love it a lot of people think there's not much to do but there's definitely an abundance to do there's no end in sight for those held at the u.s. military base detainees continuing their hunger strike and being force fed behind bars. that report still to come but first a symbol of russia's twenty fourteen winter games has made it to the stars the latest stop on the most ambitious olympic torch relay was a space walk outside the international space station the first time it has ever made it into open space in the france witness the historic moment from mission control. well it's
12:12 pm
a very exciting thing to watch live here because what we're actually getting to see right now is down on the floor the engineers are essentially walking the cosmonauts through the steps of making it all the way around the international space station with the torch in hand so it's a again. it's his fourth spacewalk and sergei it's his first now of course the torch has been in space before once for the one thousand nine hundred six olympics once for the two thousand and six but this time in space it's actually going on a space walk it's not just inside of a shuttle or inside of the eye is this so it was a big moment here when we actually saw the torch come out of the hatch attached to the cars minot's and make its appearance out in space the symbol of unity and sportsmanship being seen all over the world now the torch has a couple more days left on the i assess before it heads back down to earth with a three person crew on a soyuz spacecraft again and so it's then going to rejoin this historic relay to
12:13 pm
saatchi for the kick off in february of the olympics so we will be bringing you all the live developments of the olympic torch right here on our city. now to sift through the glitz and glamour to choose the most beautiful woman in the universe called be easy coming up we'll tell you which of the eighty six beauty queens who made their way to moscow took their. stay with us for that this is the weekly on off see. exactly what happened there i don't know but yeah killed. piers later is when i got arrested for. for a crime i did not do. we have numerous cases where police officers lie about polygraph results. and people to confess to police officers don't beat people
12:14 pm
anymore i mean it just doesn't happen really. in the course of interrogation why because there's been this is like no because the psychological techniques are more effective in obtaining confessions than physical abuse they were they could get what they wanted they can say what they wanted and there was no evidence of what they did or what they said.
12:15 pm
more than a dozen detainees are still in hunger strike a quantum of baby protesting the indefinite detention and the alleged use of torture at the facility but only on the side of the ball while it's all sunshine and smiles and. reports. despite misconceptions give lho is not just a geo to be or not to be shot it's also a forty five square mile military base with no plans of going anywhere full of signs of the stablished american life it is a navy base and we just happened to have the camps in here home to the only mcdonald's on cuban soil a subway sandwich shop a starbucks and a taco bell you got the best the best financial interest that you got pizza starbucks and. all of these other places that helped to set up a logistical support for the troops that are all over the there are about five and a half thousand people living and working on the base roughly half serve the actual detention center the u.s. government has been leasing this territory since one thousand nine hundred three for just over forty five hundred dollars curiously that is still the price today
12:16 pm
but it's said that the cuban government has been refusing to accept this money for decades the castro government said you know we don't want this lease anymore in the united states' position was that it's a binding lease and in the lease it actually says that it can't be broken unless both sides both countries agree to that that strikes me as a very odd contract so when territory that the u.s. has occupied against cuba's wishes since one thousand fifty nine most officers come here for short term of up to nine months or longer deployment of two to three years far from whole life isn't put on hold and you can't date certain people where you can certainly have if it's away from your like rank system then you're allowed to you know there's the don't tell an open air movie theater playing all the hottest hollywood blockbusters and a ticket bar to let loose after a hard day's work even though most say schedules aren't that intense anyway we actually get quite a bit of time off like a decent man and we go to be an end of year as our activities for people to do m.w.
12:17 pm
are stands for morale welfare and recreation. almost every sport known to man is available to team get well on state of the art facilities. i love it it's a lot of people think there's not much to do but there's definitely an abundance to do. being in a remote location doesn't even have to affect eating habits and all you can eat lunch costs just under five bucks and breakfast is half that price a downside though information or lack thereof or if you do a lot of the t.v. programs broadcasting here are army focused. and internet is almost nonexistent the base dubbed new stream a stand by some soldiers even so we're told those serving here are banned from looking at websites like wiki leaks for example once classified always classified. even if the information has long been made public there are other strict regulations in place to fun fact about guantanamo apparently
12:18 pm
a life of an costs here a little more than a life of a detainee if you run one of these babies over the fine is ten thousand dollars. there's a very strict speed limit in guantanamo and it's a very slow speed limit and people say that that's that's all about the quantised somewhat ironic at a place marred by human rights scandals officials make a point of showing journalists how well prisoners two are kept and thirteen here when i wanted to call so for a compliant detainee at guantanamo they would be allowed to eat books have a two piece here some head and shoulders shampoo the less compliant ones have to wear the orange uniforms and get only two books at a time who's going to the other side so you can see the books detainees can't come in here but the prisoner library lovingly displays the best of their art for t.v. crews to see a lot of pre-selected books to avoid certain topics violence sexual and religious

stuff controversy shelves packed with magazines d.v.d.'s and video games plenty of ways for legit prisoners of war to pass the indefinite time they're kept here without charges and party guantanamo bay cuba. egypt's topos president mohammed morsi along with fourteen muslim brotherhood members went on trial on monday and had to see proceedings postponed until generally the eighth they asked the leaders facing charges of encouraging a deadly crackdown on dissenting karo last december now this footage is from the opening of the hearings the first video of mohamed morsi since his arrest four months ago he refused to wear the mandatory white uniform for defendant and rejected the court's authority insisting he's still the country's legitimate leader during his transfer to prison police were confronted by angry mobs in the capital and other cities but he's built true gauge public opinion on the prosecution of egypt's first democratically elected president. of the.

is known as the singer of the revolution the popularity of his pro-democracy song saw him badly tortured by the military and now despite fighting to bring down both hosni mubarak and mohamed morsi romney has little hope for egypt's future as morsi goes on trial for incitement to kill protesters. for the revolutionaries are now in the worst scenario we have ever been since two thousand and eleven morsi should be tried but it's comic that mubarak trial should be held up at every turn while the morsy trial is moving along so fast what shocks me is that the authorities never seem to have the will to push through the court cases of remnants of the former regime tahrir square once the heartbeat of the revolution has become just another busy roundabout in two thousand and eleven and two thousand and thirteen people came here demanding bread freedom and social justice but after the military ousted mr brotherhood president mohamed morsi hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested eating some to fear the freedoms and justice will never become
12:21 pm
a reality admits this violence rights groups have little faith that the trial of mr morsi and other mr brotherhood leaders will be fair that's coming at a time when there is a general crackdown against the brotherhood a very selective prosecutions on the part of the justice system looking only at. brotherhood members with impunity for security services meanwhile the retrial of egypt's other ousted president hosni mubarak drags on the feeling that the security apparatus continues to shape court decisions means egypt's future is hard to predict the military is entrenched in its own interests and its own interest again and again the problem now that we need to sit down and agree on a specific transitional justice either we're trying everyone on meaningful we're taking the road to the south africa bureau and many many of them that is totally able to be sure that seems far away as pro morsi protests and clashes with security forces continue to rock the nation the fear is morsi is trial will not deliver much

did justice to egypt but rather set the stage for further instability and turmoil. for r t cairo with the latest round of talks over iran's nuclear program failing to secure progress president hassan rouhani said tehran will not bow to international pressure and give up its right to enrich uranium even before the talks began on thursday thousands were running in tehran chanting anti-american slogans and burning israeli flags of these poor scott looks at what got them so riled. person rouhani is recent speech at the un general assembly was said by many to represent a thorin in relations between tehran and washington a sign of the iranian leadership is keen to initiate warmer ties with the global community but not everyone is keen for this to happen. hard line conservative protesters threw eggs at the president upon his return to tehran and now those uncomfortable with the idea of increased diplomacy with washington have launched

the first ever down with the usa contest the idea is to find the most creative and to us propaganda contestants are invited to submit photographs posters caricature poems hymns and blogs all relating to the slogan down with the usa over three thousand dollars are up for grabs for the winner there will be a prize for the best idea to mark death of america which will renew the concept of death to america because of the arrogance of america the message is clear for as long as the us policies are hostile to us we will continue to use the slogan. well the slogan first came to prominence during the one nine hundred seventy nine iranian revolution when the u.s. backed government was overthrown and since then it's been widely used by critics of washington those critics now favor hanis willingness to reengage with the u.s. could undermine the revolution they also see no reason to start to play misty with a country that for years has portrayed iran as the enemy and subject of the country

to harsh economic sanctions over its nuclear program states like these and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil this administration has systematically imposed the toughest sanctions on iran on iran ever the united states is not going to lift the sanctions until it is clear that a very verifiable accountable transparent process is in place despite efforts by the us government to suggest these sanctions aren't affecting the general population food clothes and even basic medicines have rocketed in price in recent years on the leadership's attempt to engage with washington has led to anti american slogans and banners appearing all over tehran in recent weeks with rouhani demanding many be taken down put scott r.t. . well we've got plenty of stories for you on our website of the moment including collision course a motorist in this russian city got something of

illegal immigration is a hot topic and everyone always says that immigrants do the work that no one wants to do well let me explain why that is i would occur just on vacation got into a taxi driver by a former migrant worker who used to make a living in moscow he told me that he really worked hard driving unloading trucks after five years he came back home and bought a house yes from the seller that russians can't even survive and he was able to buy a house employers and russian america say that locals don't want to work or are demotivated well want to margaret work or on a salary that could build a bright future one compared to a local who can't even make ends meet while you could see why the migrant workers are a lot more motivated let me put it to you this way if you knew that you had to work five hard years of some awful labor awful conditions somewhere far away like brazil

or germany what would be able to pay off a house would you do it i think you would let's not buy into this myth that locals and country x. don't want to work they just don't want to work at complete futility for table scraps but that's just my opinion. but if they realize at some point that the goal of all my working life was nothing more than about making money and quickly as possible. what it was all for i couldn't say i was an editor for a glossy magazine at the time was not ok so i can buy another fur coat or a new car. or even an apartment so what and thirty four i don't have a man whom i would like to start a family with yet i knew then it was time to stop drop it all and try to find
