anti fracking rage in romania clashes erupt in a village between police and locals who don't want american energy giant chevron to drill for shale gas in the area. politicians descend on kiev again reaffirming their support for the anti-government demonstrations which show no signs of dying down despite the cold weather. and in the morning financial sin mandela continues why we look into concerns that traces of south africa's dark past may return this time for the country's minorities.
10:01 am
broadcasting twenty four seven live from moscow you're watching. international now ninety fracking protests in northeastern mania has turned violent clashes have broken out between police and locals who are trying to stop the u.s. oil giant chevron from drilling fish gas in the area artie's lucy catherine or visit the site of unrest. we're here in this is just moments after a very tense clashes between protesters who are against chevron conducting exploration for shale gas drilling here in this area in northeastern mania what you see behind me over there is actually the chevron site now protesters had ran across the street they broke down the perimeter of the chevron location tore down the fences and entered the area there were actually inside the chevron test exploration area the police had to run and there weren't arrests made at the moment but then as
10:02 am
you can see these units riot police officers had been called into the area this is when things very much escalated and we had several protesters arrested there were options between the police and the demonstrators and actually if we pan over here you can see people very upset about what's happening here with chevron and. these protesters who have been camped out here for over a month earlier that's the count was actually broken up by riot police officers today saturday was supposed to be a major protest there and they're still trying to get chevron to leave because although chevron and october announced it was seething operations the work had begun and these police officers are not going anywhere as you can see they're trying to keep the protesters contained to this area so that they don't break out again and go on to the chevron site now we did see several arrests some people had been injured they were taken out in medical vans we don't know exactly how many and
10:03 am
again it's a tense tense environment these people are very unhappy with the conduct of the police not just today but earlier and they're very unhappy that chevron is continuing these operations they feel that although chevron says that it's trying to do this in a responsible way the people here feel like they haven't been consulted they feel like their point of view isn't being taken into consideration and we have to keep in mind that this is a farming area people here rely on the land to survive if the water does get. contaminated which is something that they fear will happen as a result of the fracking their very existence is threatened which is why they're so frustrated with the situation the police officers as you can see are coming closer we're not quite sure why. again we're not exactly sure what's happening here this is private property as some of the people are saying across the road it's the chevron property but this is private land so people are very upset that the police are moving us out of the way we certainly don't want to get
10:04 am
arrested so we'll keep moving but i suppose they're trying to clear clear people out of here but again. tense environment the demonstration continues it's unclear what will make these protesters leave as you can see if we turn around they're sitting down they're staying their ground they don't want to leave this area. of course we'll keep you posted on the developments in romania and you can also today by following. here on twitter what is loosely mentioned the substances used in fracking will accumulate in the soil and pollute ground water and even the most of the chemicals remain in the ground for years to come. there over a function documented cases of water contamination new drilling sites with health impacts including sensory. damage kevin own spoke to environmental safety campaign george bush who says big business and government are closer than ever when it comes
10:05 am
to show. what you see essentially is this battle between big business and the interests of the people and a consistent pattern both in the u.k. and roumania where you're seeing major figures from the energy industry moving into into government directly david cameron as i came into came to power on the promise of being the greenest government ever and what we've seen is exactly the opposite in rumania it's exactly the same scenario we see a leader who says says no to fracking because the people want it and then when he's in power he starts dancing to the tune as a these major players like chevron the problem the bottom line here is that the general public no doubt may be. no not even a little concerned about the environment a little kid to bring a little cold to really good job to do they want cheap fuel this is one of the lawyers being both here and in romania that you know. maybe a poison your children but it's going to be cheaper to the people in neighboring plots of land the ones that have to suffer the consequences the huge increase rates
10:06 am
of cancer as a lot of research and problems thousands of families are being forced to move out of the areas and one of the reasons that we're not hearing more about the specific stories of the illness is that in order to get any kind of compensation from these fucking companies they have to settle out of court because they can't begin to fight the legal battles that chevron can afford. fueling the public protest in ukraine yet again a. pace has spoken to the crowds in kiev the protesters have four days to de camp from government buildings artie's pour scott is in kiev for us now he joins us live once again words of encouragement then from european politicians. yes on saturday the crowds behind me were addressed by a delegation of the e.u.
10:07 am
officials who once again reiterated their support for the opposition movement the delegation met with opposition leaders and mingled with the crowd but they didn't meet any representatives of the government of course the government the survived a vote of no confidence in midweek but despite this result it hasn't stopped the e.u. delegation backing calls for a snap election. but was. the discussions read today and the result in the hospital you see the people will growing the make that choice for a country really loose in freedom. and under the rule of law. well the opposition continue their blockade of certain government buildings with a deadline set by the government for them to be out expiring on tuesday on the delegation support for the opposition comes despite ukraine's prime minister calling for outside interference to stop and simple tell your slate the e.u.
10:08 am
delegation were condemning what they describe as russian pressure on kiev where the protesters are set once again to roll into the evening with all eyes now on sunday when the opposition organizers hope that one million people from all over ukraine will descend on the capital. thank you for that artie's polls. in kiev there thank you. well political commentator alexander nicastro of in london says the amount of attention western politicians are paying tea crane's opposition is unacceptable. maija need for any ukrainian or russian or any other diplomats or former politicians of politicians take part and then your demonstration against the e.u. in all across a very severely europe. that would cause an uproar that would probably even in the western countries going to the united nations and asking for
10:09 am
a meeting of the security council because that is blatant come to feel this isn't nothing to do with people call or is the way some protections like to say about it under the rule of law does not involve foreign diplomats and foreign politicians interfering and basically provoking this violence like it's cup when you knew great . journalist martin see if you followed ukraine's recent history says that to divide among its people would only deepen if the. deal happened. i think it would be a nightmare come true in the long term ukraine and the european union have a lot to gain from increased relationships with each other but the package that the e.u. was proposing and the price you create would pay and severed ties with russia and the east bloc would in the short term cause a very we'll drop in the standard of living for the ukrainian people much greater energy price costs and the european union and european commission given their own
10:10 am
financial woes would not be in the position to give ukraine the necessary financial support it would need in these situations the european union has major problems within its own area that it really must resolve before it can really new its all first to reach out to nations like ukraine and i think there really needs to be a fundamental reassessment in brussels of what ukraine needs which has not been adequately recognized in brussels meanwhile an investigation is underway into allegations of brain tat it's a from both the police and activists that unfolded last week. reports. it could do but i mean now why don't you call the worst moment was when i saw people being beaten on the ground at my feet they were just kids and i couldn't do anything about it and it was terrible it must never happen again. the night of november thirtieth when peaceful protests in the heart of kiev were broken up by
10:11 am
ukraine special right police force dozens and up in hospitals images of police beating defenseless people emerged on the internet the it was the next day it was the police on the receiving end of the violence but at the hands of a mob and not the peaceful protesters who were dispersed just the day before. the book i got hit by either a brick or a piece of pavement score in the face it's hard to tell because everything was flying but no one could predict it would go like this that there would be rocks bricks molotov cocktails as well as or i was scared for my units who were there because it was totally unexpected right in front of all of this there were these boys eighteen nineteen years old who serve in the army and everything was flying at them rocks molotov cocktails. these men are among the officers still in hospital
10:12 am
a week after the attack some received injuries severe enough to leave them disabled or to convince them to leave the force but both. i determined to return to service and don't have any animosity towards the crowd on independence square i can understand the people they want to express their opinion. people have the right to voice their opinion but without breaking the law it would not be an overstatement to say that many people here. is their enemy number one especially after last week's intense clashes what's there is opinion out there that the police force were simply following the instructions they have received and it's those who gave the orders that should be held responsible for the violence so. the recordings on the internet of the actual orders that received. to clear the we must create a parliamentary commission and find the person who blew it all up and hold them
10:13 am
criminally responsible i'm sure the orders came from someone higher than the head of police. as the protests enter their third week the tension is palpable no one wants a repeat of last week's nightmare but a resolution requires calm or efforts from both sides among people whose patience is already wearing thin. there are moves to stop britain's prisons becoming breeding grounds for extremists coming up a crackdown on hate preaching behind these underway to try to stop impressionable brits from being radicalized in that cell.

critical issues facing them. ready to join the movement then welcome the third. place. the but. not the friday folks i'm abby martin and this is breaking news that a liberal lion in the next mayor of new york bill de blasio by name his choice for and y.p. commissioner now based on his campaign promises one would expect a blazin to fill this crucial position with individual vehemently against the race is a narrow minded stop and frisk program but that would be just too logical and hope
10:29 am
instead of blasio is gone with bill bratton who served as new york's top cop twenty years ago and most recently is l.a.p.d. chief of police and as it turns out not only was he an innovator of the controversial program back then but i think is pretty highly of the way this harassing technique is being used today just listen to what he told journalists jeffrey toobin he said if the cops are not doing stop and frisk they are not doing their jobs it is a basic fundamental tool police work and the whole country if you do away with stop and frisk this city will go down the chute as fast as anything you can imagine. wow looks like the blasio picked a real ingenious thinker and sadly that's just the beginning bratton served as l.a.p.d. chief he approved and supported a program that mapped large swathes of muslim communities to identify potential terrorists and claimed it wasn't racial profiling to mention his connections to several companies that sell technology and surveillance care to police forces across the country so let's hope this isn't it.
