welcome to larry king our special guest is abigail breslin she first stole our farces all of hoover in little miss sunshine and was nominated for an academy award for that role at the age of ten abigail is now seventeen aging and starring alongside some of hollywood's greatest actors in august osage county a great movie soar last week a great movie the likes of barrels streep and julia roberts to name a few are in this film august osage county about a highly dysfunctional family to save the least brought together by a tragedy it opens christmas day you can not miss it if you see the play i actually did not see the play i was like ten eleven when it was on broadway and so it was kind of the view above right over the head i think too that you didn't think you got it oh god no no i don't think at all i auditioned for it and i had like one

hundred three degree fever and i had been filming in toronto a movie and so my mom drove me down to new york for it and i got there and i read it and i was really sick and but i really loved the character a lot and i loved the script and so i just kind of did it and and then i left and i up didn't find out until about four months later that i got it so i was fairly certain that there was no chance that i got it if you ever find out what took so long. and no i think they were just piecing together everything and john wells the director just wanted to make sure that everybody really worked well as a family together so i guess that's what it was but it was pretty nervous. king so marvelous you sat in oklahoma right oklahoma do you is it true you love auditioning oh yeah in a sense in

a sense i do because i think that you know once you go in there and you're in the room in your auditioning it's i mean it's your part for however long you're in there so you might as well mean most of it yeah you might as well make the most of it and yeah i kind of i like it for that reason but it is always nerve wracking i'm told that you had a terrible dream the night before the first day of shooting what did you dream of a gale. i did i had a dream that i was going on to say that and i forgot a line and meryl streep was like just go. get off get off the set and i was like you know cried in laughter but thank god that's not how often she said. i was a great girl and still nice and then some time to clean a train trip once for three and a half hours from washington today she's a terrific person such a nice person the only person she's never played is meryl streep she's done

everything exactly what's it like for you you were nominated at age ten and was still very young and not in college yet to work with people like chris cooper julia roberts your obvious is your mother meryl streep was that like for you. it was really nerve wracking it was really really nerve wracking i was pretty. pretty terrified to go into it. but once i got on the set and. everybody was really really just so nice to me and so welcoming and. and just really wanted to do the best movie they could and so it was it was really it was amazing and then to just sit there and be watching them and just be like wow i can't believe i'm actually watching all these actors right now on set it was like three months of acting school did anything it's a dog it's not like they're billing it as a comedy guys i sort is if it's

a comedy it's a dark dark dark. and some very off beat subjects as tracy letts often deals with was it difficult for you at all. on the subject matter yeah it's definitely difficult. my character gene is kind of going to a really weird time in life for teams fourteen. so a little bit younger than me but i remember that that at least wasn't too long ago and age it is a really tough age it's a really weird age i think when you're fourteen because you're not really you know you're not really a full blown teenager but you're not a kid anymore and you're expected to be really mature but you can't do anything that really requires maturity so it's kind of unfair and it's kind of a weird age so she's definitely going through a really hard time and that was that was that was fun to do and i was fun to work with but it was definitely challenging in that desolate country right which was you

live in buses would you stay. we lived in cardboard boxes no. no we stayed and we stayed in this condo complex all of us together and there were just these many like little town houses and i was in between margo martindale and meryl streep and that was pretty crazy you know you just walk outside your door and you see like meryl streep on loading groceries and you're just like it was crazy it was crazy how do you get to be ten and get a part in that movie you know little miss sunshine. doing it tend. to believe things. they didn't ten. i i actually auditioned for a little miss sunshine the first time when i was. it was five or six when i first auditioned for it and then i kind of won away and then. jonathan and valerie the

director saw me on a talk show and. wanted to meet with me and then they met with me and they just gave me the part so it was kind of the same fun movie it was a really fun movie so how did you get into this business that young when you did you have a doting mother who took your own. my brother was an actor before i was and when i was like five stories i like was posed to i was some of my brother's agent at the time called and said can can i the audition for this movie because i don't have anybody to send it on it and it's it's and i'm not sure i want to be it's called signs and my mom is like oh obvious really shy i don't think that she's really into that type of thing and i was not and so she came into my room was like you want to audition for a movie and apparently i was i was like brushing my doll's hair and i was like yes i'm ready. to like you right away. i guess i did like it a lot i liked it

a lot less time you watch yourself and little miss sunshine was when. oh boy i actually saw it on t.v. about two years ago and it was really hilarious to watch because the last time it's here and i was ten years old and so much of it went you know over my head because i was ten and then finally i saw it like two years ago and i was like oh oh oh oh have you know a lot of people have had problems. in the business too much too soon child star many child stars the rough time later on in adulthood how you dealt with being known and getting all these great shots. why i've been really lucky. that i have you know really great family and really good friends and i live in new york city so it kind of keeps me and you know when i'm not working i'm just hanging out

with my friends and i was homeschooled right i was home school and not many people raise this. yeah i guess so both my brothers were homeschooled as well but i i was kind of you know all throughout high school kind of i was friends with a bunch of kids from another high school in new york and then it was kind of all hung out and even i didn't go to the school and it was great and i i mean it's never been something rive i've been too worried about going off the grid or anything because my family keeps me really. kind of saying you reason i don't know this you recently pose close to topless in a photo shoot. some people got angry at that you had a bed sheet wrapped around you what was the occasion of the shooting well i wasn't topless as a big misconception i did i was completely covered the whole time i did it the photographers tyler shields' who's

a really good friend of mine one of our best friends and he's a great photographer i didn't movie with him a year ago and. and he's he's great i mean we just kind of did it because i love shooting with him and any opportunity i got a reason for it was really just for nothing it was just because they wanted to do a shoot was the reaction overblown i think it was i think it was personally i do because i think that you know there is a headline that just came out saying that i was topless even though i wasn't and the family were that i mean my family also the photos and my mom was there and we shot it and it wasn't like some weird thing and so yeah i think that if there hadn't been that type of headline just put out that wasn't true and one of been a bigger reaction your brother is still in the business my brother spencer is yeah he's an actor a writer director and a singer songwriter his first album and my brother ryan is

a producer so yeah so it's a house of show business it has turned into a house of. deans are you concerned when you see the biz some of your contemporaries people with a great deal of talent who suddenly have problems as they get into a little more mature age the problem is in the lindsay low hands and justin bieber isn't admitted talents miley cyrus who seem to go off the bat and die i mean for me it's like. it's just very different from from what i am and what i do i mean i just i'm like a typical you know seventeen year old girl you know i just i know it's true it's true i feel like i am and then i just happened to movie is really cool that i get to do that on such kind of how i see it and i just like doing that and i feel like you know i'm really lucky to do that and i want to keep doing that and so there's i

wouldn't want to do anything to that so you're very protective of what you got right exactly exactly what college you're going to go to i want to go to the new school. you know why i'm starting to by now i'm just finishing up grade school should be hard for you i hope you know how it's going to get resident oh gosh but yeah i know it's not about like i grades so i have a back up well you and i know maybe maybe i always wanted to go to notre dame but i have found that part way new york i wished it was that coming up i have a gale on the odd little lead will be right back. there. are very hard. to.

a girl who's bitten by the zombie virus and it's very dark actually and as i your typical zombie movie it's more about disease and the isolation of of that and only place to my dad my dad was allowed to work with them it was great it was awesome i loved working with him he's such a nice guy he's also the movie and yeah i was it was really cool to like like he likes her movies right i do i do a whole kind of make up did you have as a zombie the makeup was kind of an untraditional zombie make up i mean. it wasn't necessarily bloody and gory we use a lot of like our contact me at different stages is a lot of airbrushing for veins and. and wounds and when you shoot new orleans what was it like to see yourself as

a zombie. it was pretty it was pretty it was interesting i mean i thought it was going to be really really cool like i just love it and that was there were certain times and i just saw it i was like whoa this is really cool but it was it was pretty you know sometimes it was it got really because it isn't really the subject matter of the film is really dark and it was sad sometimes it got a little bit emotional something we see it i think acts here at some point we don't have a release as you call him governor or mode. i guess which is other than you're always got the right he just told me to calm arnold. no. no no what's been your most challenging role to date is it is it just august was awfully challenging it was different from anything that i had done so yeah that was pretty it was pretty challenging for sure just to tap into all the different. layers of

the character and the story and the movie i did maggie with arnold was pretty challenging as well you're into music too right yes saying yeah yeah i saying i write all the songs played guitar you know now i've got me an album that i'm working on right now and i have a song out on i tunes right now it's called it's called christmas in new york. i think i know this is an old song no i wrote at you when i wrote it while i was filming august osage county dismissing new york very good idea for a title good idea for a movie but yeah there you go do you date do i have to hit as the seventeen year olds begin to date right at sixteen seventeen yes it is do teenagers still baby already on me at the corner. gone my son is fourteen ok he's a good kid myself either two sons fourteen or thirteen thirteen is still a little baby but the forty four times of turning point is a killer is a killer is

a killer to watch out for he goes out he goes where are you going i'm going to beverly drive what we hung up yeah that's a big thing the hanging out do you hang out i hang out with people all of i hang out with i hang out if you have a boyfriend i have oh boy. that's a hard. i hang out i hang out with you don't have a you have of i hang out i mean our people are you know some people more than others we're not i you know to young to look for romance i mean like a serious role you know either i don't believe in it i think but i think i've discovered something here up until you're a good actress. i think here i've seen it and yourself away i've given myself what you know i like you know and i like i like. i like watching romantic movie is the

you see movies where you say i love to do that part. i see movies a lot and i never think to myself like oh wow i wish i could have done that because i'm always like unanswered with the people that have done it and i'm like wow they did such a great job with that so i would never want to try to recreate anything you will see her christmas day starting christmas day in august osage county for the best movies of the year you will not forget this movie that i intend to see it again thank you we talked about chance he's fourteen yes this is a picture of james very very good looking very handsome will i have trouble with. you well i think that's something i think definitely will a heartbreaker. and by the way you played helen keller in an off road way production of the miracle of western. on broadway all right way thank you yeah it was it was the i was a critical player who played the lady who taught or else until you have

a good time doing it i did it was it was difficult and a lot injuries from it but the jedi blind and yeah i had a knife in rehearsal once and i had to get stitches saw the scar well battle wounds readers watches film i do like it or a lot i learned a lot from theater i think there is a really good experience to have and i want to do it again but it's challenging the top of the social media questions for you at all would many tweets what was the best part about filming august osage county. the best part about filming it was probably just getting to work with the cast and john wells and. everybody a part of it and just kind of watching them and and it was a really surreal thing that was that's probably the best part of it marie is a dealer error on him facebook wants to know what it was like working with halle berry jolie for stood up and catherine zeta jones you with abigail you starred with halle in the call with jodie in mems island and with catherine in no reservations

they were all incredible all very different but oh really really nice to me and. obviously incredible actresses but also just really good people in real life and so that was that was an awesome thing to get to work with you that you got quite a resume team i've been very lucky starting about five yeah at amado on the bowery the a twitter what's the most important thing you've learned from little miss sunshine to august osage county those seven years the seven years i think the most important thing that i've learned is that. well one of us is just that whatever you do you have to be really connected to your and very passion about it and i think that that makes all the difference in like your performance and how you feel about the movie is that as long as you feel like you really really care about the project that you're doing that's really important to me ok we finish with

a little thing we call if you only know i just have some questions to the first boy you kissed following top. i can tell you my first on screen kiss new news the first. oh boy this is very embarrassing why it's not just you members named and i was in a room can you in a movie that's in a movie who is it is i'm jake just to. throw it on the map and say see austin what was he like tracy austin no jake to yes yes very high great guy who gave us a little crush celebrity crush. always been on what what keeps you up at night when he worried that i worry about bugs. bugs i'm a fear the pug are going to be in my bed and this one will be like a little bit scary bugs terrify me terrify me and i actually am off

a very dead and have maggots on my arms have you been in florida and seen palmetto bug no i don't want to own and don't. instagram or vine instagram favor that drew more time oh yes actor i really like you know what i'm ryan gosling said i do you like to emulate. mean feral street is not everybody in this movie i would like to and their parents the biggest misconception about teenagers today ok i think of the view is that here we go i think the biggest misconception is that teenagers are very like. people think that a lot that we don't really think about much or we're very self-centered selves are we can be self-centered but i think everybody saw sen a degree and we actually think about so much and that's why we get moody is because

we think about like all of the terrible things that could happen to us in the near future and it's very terrifying. and it's no different whether you're just a teenage girl we're going to sort of mall shop or and i first want to same thing we're all going through the same thing oh my gosh i just call me when i'm not when i'm filming i'll go home at night last night my friends will just sit there and us talk about our feelings for hours favorite horror movie of all time. the exorcist what are your would you like to play that part. surely not yellow you're on a desert island what three things would you want with you. ok does your island i probably bring my i pod or my i phones are my i phone charger and about. it's good here very good if you were an actor or a musician what would you be. thought of i could tell and finally
