jihadist violence. from our studio center here in moscow which just turned eleven pm this is r.t. international. now these are not images from a disaster zone these are actual scenes from the ukrainian capital the pictures show protesters running amok angry over plans for laws they say are aimed at punishing them for holding rallies the response has been fierce mix of molotov cocktails clubs and bombs and reports of pepper spray all thrown at the police trying to stave off a revolution when alexian is in kiev for the international. like a battlefield doesn't it after this extreme violence just. all of the protesters
2:02 pm
prepared to go in all of this. well the word unprecedented fits very well to the situation of kiev right now it is unprecedented brutality from both sides of the protest by the police and by the protesters yesterday we saw and even today we saw the policeman beaten to a bloody mess and as well as we saw lots of protesters carry two ambulances and police attended is also that the number of policemen injured in these riots also almost matches the number of the protesters which is unprecedented even if we're talking a global stage it is also preceded that we see molotov cocktails rocks flash bangs grenades and all these kind of things used in the very heart of ukraine into the capital that's never been happening before it is still happening i just returned from from that place that's where our vantage point is that's where we're observing the riot where we see flash bangs and of cocktails thrown in basically every second the protesters are even using some medieval means to take down the police lines the
2:03 pm
interior ministry at the same time is claiming that someone is arming the protesters with the clubs and with the knives and different sorts of weapons so far there's been no reports of firearms among the opposition crowd but we wouldn't rule that out as well the same time we know that president got a call which is now meeting several people from the opposition who were selected to to or to meet the president but this is behind closed doors meeting and is really hard to understand what will come out of it where there will be any political solution what will be able to temper the mood in the streets of kiev now to give you a proper idea of what is happening around three hundred meters from where i'm standing right now i did this report from the scene of the riot. this morning now in here but that sound sent at the right place where the vents unraveled in a very violent manner yesterday are not dying down you can see what works. manes of

the police cars and police buses which were burned yesterday predicting picture of what happened here yesterday over there just literally fifty meters away from here all the police lines the right police the special regiment called the better they're trying to secure the governments of water yesterday on sunday the protesters gathered for a typical rally after that they decided to form the government the poor and the clashes with the police erupted we have information that more than seventy police officers have been. to hospitals with different injuries that still remain pretty much all but there was some some very brutal scenes of the police officers being beaten up also there was some violence from the police reportedly they used rubber bullets against the crowd so we can see from time to time most of truck tells the ropes and flash bangs are being thrown from both sides towards each other over the night the protesters have managed to dismantle some of the pavement here and they're using these rocks to throw them at the police they're also using most of

cocktails and different flash and so it's pretty loud here this is the live barricade where the protesters. against the police they're still here we can see like the cement literally several thousand people the numbers are expanding as the day progresses really unclear where this all going to go but so far it's been very very time the word on the ground is that the police may actually try to assemble the barricade on the independence square which has been there for almost two months now and this may and in very violent very violent scenario just to give you the idea of how serious this whole thing is here the protesters are installing. the medieval weapons to make sure their project tiles molotov cocktails are off actually be able to reach the police lines which the seventeen eighteen meters away from here will you know the president on the cover just met with some opposition leaders that he's ready to hold negotiations with the opposition but this is not the talk of the town right here. people are still very much determined for the

government to resign for the president to step down this is their goal this is a no longer broke which it was at the beginning of this protest story of this is a purely governmental. following all the developments of what's happening in the capital here. dozens of policemen remain hospitalized in kiev with head injuries fractures and poisoning substances but despite this the e.u. is sticking to its position of blaming the local authorities and i mean i'm going to reports it appears the scene is being set for the final act. as rocks went flying and police buses went up in flames the opposition leaders very quickly found the man responsible for the mayhem ukraine's president did to get the footage or it is what it is we demand that you stop the escalation of the situation get the police off the streets dissolve the parliament and call for early parliamentary and presidential elections are going to not repeat the fate of

ceausescu and get after it the fact that the riots were started by several hundred protesters hailing from the ultra nationalist camp on the independence square seems to have been swept under the carpet the police had to the standard shower of rocks and molotov cocktails the government and abolition of criticism for using water cannons and rubber bullets to contain the raging crowd think christian tension in ukraine is a direct consequence of the government failing to acknowledge their legitimate grievances of its people the u.s. will continue to consider additional steps including sanctions in response to the use of violence and though the protest leaders and members chanted revolution much of the night the west seemed indifferent for the open calls for more a step under these conditions we don't want to live we don't want to work that's why we're going to change the power of of this core is sibs emetics seventy policemen were injured twenty protesters arrested cameras captured the scenes of

the rioters vicious attacks against the security forces yet for the western leaders and for the ukrainian opposition this seems to be the european way to solve ukraine's internal political issues. we have european values we have european principles we have european rights that we must uphold in each and every european country this type of pressure seems to be effective not even twenty four hours after the riots started president in the coverage has already made concessions to the opposition going as far as meeting with good and bad by the rampaging log in and a billion square. the ukrainian opposition seems to be in a win win situation either by getting a change of leadership by force or simply forcing early elections but with radicals there it's now well and truly spilt in kiev the question is would the opposition be capable of getting it back in the bottle it goes r.t. . well earlier i discussed developments in ukraine with european parliament member . covert she's

a writer on international affairs they have polar opinions on what's behind this turmoil. we are dealing with significant group of highly committed people who are hell bent on regime change through street toggery and by the way the ukrainian legislation. limiting so-called freedom of assembly is no worse than the recent spanish law about which your own station reported six weeks ago in fact what we're dealing with is a clear attempt to undermine the constitutional order of a major european state and it is truly shocking for european parliamentarians to say that they are still supportive of a process that obviously wants to use street thuggery and mob rule as a means of regime change regime change a change of government that's exactly what the wants it wants influence over

ukraine in the long term it's not the economic aspirations of the government it's actually expansion of the it's that they want to control and carry on nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah not we had we had presidential elections in ukraine forty years ago we had. these elections where recognize arsed freeze for if there has to be a change of government it has to be done through the elections and while the protest is waiting for that democratic process there's an election due spring twenty fifth exactly our economy which is going to be president of all former german foreign minister busta best available at the barricades and victoria nuland from the state department passing quickies around can you imagine russian foreign minister a lot of going to barcelona to support separatists and when it comes to ukraine what we have witnessed is excessive patience by the government at the street thuggery and the rule of mob this would not have been allowed in washington d.c.
2:11 pm
it would not have been allowed in london and certainly not in brussels what was the reason for the demonstrations the reason. was that president you know coverage the ukrainian oratory. refuse at the last moment under the pressure of moscow under the pressure of what i saw. refused to sign the association there is going to be a good this is simply factually wrong we are looking at a clear cut situation where young the coverage was perfectly within his rights to say no to a horrible deal which had it gone ahead would have cost ukraine tens of billions of euros which it cannot afford when russia came in with fifteen billion rescue package and it's simply that europe wanted to have free access to be a communion market for nothing and it was geo political all along. the political crisis in ukraine escalates we keep up to date with what's happening in kiev twenty four seven. over the long awaited geneva two peace talks on syria just
2:12 pm
a few days away r.t. is beginning its special coverage of the diplomatic build up to a meeting which aims to find a way to end the bloody conflict. the presence of syria's main opposition group in geneva is in question again the western backed body issued an ultimatum threatening not to show up after the u.n. invited iran the syrian national council is demanding that either iran proves its commitment to setting up an interim government in syria or the un withdraw its invitation but russia's foreign minister said this cast doubts over the opposition's willingness to find a solution. caught up with anyone doubting the necessity of all influential players taking part in geneva two is not seeking an end to the syrian crisis these are just whims the syrian government imposes no preconditions and is even willing to sit with countries directly arm the rebels and not just the

moderates so does that mean damascus demands their exclusion the goal of any talks is to bring to the negotiating table not just the parties you like but all those who are the solution to the problem depends on. well even if the syrian national coalition does attend the peace talks its priorities are likely to be very different from its opponents its leader earlier said forming an interim government without bashar al assad must be a main aim of the conference believe syrian leader himself though said stopping the spread of terrorism should be the primary focus. the geneva two conference must lead to concrete results when it comes to fighting terrorism and the other outcome that does not touch upon the comeback thing of terrorism that would be of no value at all. to discuss the struggle to get these peace talks on syria under way i'm not joined by cover he's

a former professor at tehran university and author of several books on iran's foreign policy now the deadline issued by the syrian opposition for the u.n. and iran to decide over whether iran should attend these this conference is now over should iran simply say its word that it could scupper these talks and simply acknowledge that fact and now walk away. was oh i don't think so and i don't think that would be a wise approach by iran iran has repeatedly expressed his interest to participate and play a constructive role toward a political settlement in syria their foreign minister zarif radio raiding iran's principle position in favor of a political transition in syria you know democratic free elections and so forth so i don't think iran will walk away given the fact that syria strategy.
2:15 pm
and the civil war in syria are serious ramifications in terms of regional instability affecting iran's national security calculus so i think that iran is interested and keen on accepting the invitation sent by the un secretary general which to my understanding was sent without any precondition and that has been confirmed by the deputy foreign minister mr yon who said that iran was not invited to geneva a wonderful it's sort of illogical to impose on iran setting conditions for participating in round one of the geneva conference given the fact that we're really dealing with two conferences in one and even mr rove has stated that the first run is pretty much symbolic with the participation of some forty countries and hopefully iran will be included as well so in my opinion the syrian
2:16 pm
opposition is a stance is rash unwise and counterproductive given the fact that they have serious emphasis on syria and national integrity and sovereignty in light of the intrusion and their very destructive role of thousands of foreign forces who have zero commitment to the values of free democratic syria. as well as the rights of women and so on but surely the main aim of this conference is to make sure a transitional process takes place where in effect a sad steps down there's knee and surely iran being a very close ally of a sad but they really agree to a transitional government being set up without. well you know that's an important question and needs to be discussed at the conference itself because you know what is the alternative to mr we do not want to see and. reproduced in

syria where you have you know of the breakup of the country and basically warlordism in various parts of the country and incitement of the syria sectarianism and so forth and you know some of the constitution members of the. national democratic right have prioritized the fight against sectarian violence and yet you have these. groups just today banning music images and of course the zero respect for women's rights and so on so they run iran could have and that's the question then is. iran's presence here could be really quite crucial to these priest talks and yet here we have washington despite the fore in relations with tehran being very negative about tehran's presence there and that what's that going to do for relations not just between tehran and washington but indeed russia because that will cause friction when it. oh of course because the you know
2:18 pm
state department has been contradictory under one hand we have heard from secretary of state john kerry hinting that he would work i mean iran's participation of the sideline of the conference and yet some other u.s. officials taking the opposite position and you know the u.s. is now building confidence with iran on the nuclear issue and this could be very you to build confidence and to. non-nuclear regional issues the issues of vital importance to both countries really good to hear thoughts on this thank you very much indeed cover the former professor at tehran university live in r.t. thank you so much for your thoughts. but of course we'll be updating on any developments that could affect the geneva two peace conference on syria throughout the day plus don't miss our special coverage of the summit that starts this coming wednesday.

we have corruption like we've never had in this country you can say that this is a great economy right now it's a great economy if you're rich and poor we're trying to get the wall to wall street cranked up again if you've got all your money in stocks it's beginning to show a little life it's not if you're an average person in this country i would i have to tend to agree with doug i mean i see a lot of public relations here i don't see a lot of really good policy for the average person i just like to pick up on an earlier point that doug made though which i also thought was quite important and significant especially insofar as historians can provide value by looking for trends and putting things in context which was the assassination of a u.s. citizen overseas really you might say the power of liking to have life or death over their citizens without without an open trial.
2:21 pm
washington and the e.u. have removed the number of sanctions they did and posed on iran after it halted part of its uranium enrichment program and move comes as part of a landmark deal between the country and six world powers look at what iran is gaining from all of this while the total economic relief for the country over the next six months is seven billion dollars now most of that money that's four point two billion dollars of it will be accessible through iranian funds overseas which will be blocked the rest is coming from an easing of restrictions on the export of petro chemical goods precious metals and financial transactions over the move is
2:22 pm
just the beginning as over the next few months iran and those six world powers have to reach a final compromise because of the fall asleep reports the past may not speak easy. from today a deal between iran and the international community goes into effect that will see iran freeze parts of its nuclear program in return for the easing of sanctions in terms of the agreement they will no longer be restrictions on the reigning exports of picture chemicals the country will also be able to import parts for its auto manufacturing industry and trade in gold and other precious metals the next six months are critical because it is during this time frame that the international community and iran will need to reach a final agreement that many fear without which could ultimately see the border middle east descend into chaos and possibly even a war what is clear is that there has been a good will and the wanting for this deal to work that has overridden the skeptics

and the voices calling for fresh sanctions but what is not clear is how the united states is going to maneuver its way forward it has a very fine line to walk on the one hand you have his role that continues to say that this was a deal with the devil you also have new is congressmen and women who are calling for fresh sanctions but on the other hand you have iran's which essentially the american president barack obama is urging to come to the party and he himself needs to show transparency and commitment why not alienating for example his friend tel aviv in the region so the next six months are going to be critical the hope is that at the end of half a year you will have a permanent deal in place between iran and the international community policy r.t. tel aviv. suffer all screen to all line officials and to u.s. states consider bringing back the death penalty boys shooting a shortage of lethal drugs is forcing local lawmakers to resurrect a method that has disappeared in much of the world the details dot com. also
