the. gun clashes in gulf central kiev as ukrainian police tear down barricades and chase rioters on a fourth day of anti-government protests three people have died. the crisis is fueled by nationalist and radicals keen to take the opportunity to push for revolution there. and also in the headlines syria's government and opposition sit face to face with the first time since the start of the conflicts but the start of the long anticipated peace talks in switzerland have exposed the party's very different views on the future.

that all those writing in the central kiev are considered to be terrorists and we also heard from the some of the officials from behind the barricades from the police lines who've been saying that. they will use force if needed and this is the case as we can see right now from our vantage point. the fear of the police are now in full in full swing this year the protesters who are still here feeling rocks and and more with the cocktails at them. we can see this literally maybe several hundred policemen. and. there will soon as we can hear banging their shields to give a proper psychological effect so that the protest is maybe more scared but now we can see there are no protesters remaining at the scene of the riots which has been the scene of the riot for the past four days already that's it the protesters have

been pushed off from the governmental quarter several police lines and you see the one police line the other police line they're now securing the perimeter no major violence as we could see no. major violence from the police in fact i would say no violence from the police at all we can see the cops the police are not advancing to the independence square which is literally two hundred meters away from here they're not advancing there they're just basically what they're doing they're securing this ground here that the governmental quarter pushed the rioters from the scene and what they're doing the just securing it here now so they're quick clearly they're not intending to disperse the big protests the protests that the independence square the one which has been existing for several months already there we have rocks flying at the plate at the police again the protesters the rioters are back are back as we can see and there can also see another wounded person being carried it is getting violent again although this. it's quite clear

that the violence is coming from the protesters from the rioters not from the police the police is merely protecting themselves we can see a modes of cocktail there on the ground as well. again most of cocktails are being thrown rocks are being thrown that the police. so this is look this looks like yet another yet another retreat by the police. and the protesters are demanding again the rioters are bringing tires probably they will burn them and hold them at the police like they've done for on several occasions already. they're charging they're charging again at the police as we can see throwing rocks all the time. so you see it's a very tense situation we can describe it as a monkey with a grenade situation can explode at any moment the rioters are particularly infuriated by information that several of their kind happy kill or have been have

police have now cleared out all the way some explosions you can see that we've had to come inside to the hotel which is nearby where those barricades were. in order to to get away from from what was going on. there are some wounded demonstrators some people who'd been beaten as the police have now completely cleared all of that area away this all happened very very quickly it all happened in a space of just a few minutes we heard a few loud explosions i believe they were. they were noisy grenades they were flash bang grenades and then a charge by the police which is completely cleared out that whole area of demonstrators some place have been in a standoff for the last the last few days but all of this does seem that it's set to continue for a while yet will be trying to get back out there as soon as it's safe for us to do so to see what's going on almost a case where they were located. but yes it is seeing demonstrators trying to move

ukraine for some time they've been in kiev they've been trying to push forward their agenda by any possible means including force and tragically when you get into these sorts of situations where they've excel or it'd like this it's incredibly difficult to deflate them easily i come from belfast originally in northern ireland and i've seen the sort of damage that you can have from these sorts of terrorist incidents the terrible tragic problem is that people who wanted to originally express a democratic complaint against the government have knowledge seeing their protests effectively go down in flames because of course the violent extremist hinges have affectively desecrated their message and we're left with a situation where they're trying to hold ukraine to ransom yesterday one of the opposition leaders at the time said the president was a no position to council a meeting which had dead can rises at least in part to be blamed on the authorities unwillingness to talk. oh look i think the situation here is very

much one we're in kiev we certainly see a large number of protesters but do they really reflect the viewpoints of the entirety of ukraine well i don't think that's the case in fact i think this is somewhat similar to thailand we're effectively you're seeing an insurgent group being who are trying to force themselves upon the government to take over all its side of the democratic process and like him or loath him the truth is the current president mr young the cove it is democratically elected. we don't see many people support saying on the supporting the president on the streets of kiev why is that. well you know this is one of these great things where ultimately if you're a reasonable decent law abiding citizen are you going to really want to be there to fear software. the group of militant thought what we've ended up with saberi is the

lowest common denominator of this situation is that reasonable people the normal voters of ukraine have decided to go about their business and ultimately we have this tragic situation where the ultras affectively a thuggish element to seem to have links to very extremist politics in many cases i mean some of them are national socialists or fascists some of them probably have some sort of harkening towards communism certainly they're not the sort of normal average everyday people who really can be reasoned with and therefore tragically we've seen the situation where the police have had to intervene and we also see many nationalists among those involved in clashes are they an instrument of revolution or are they now lazing than breast. what i think the situation that you're seeing now is that essentially everybody who's got a grievance against the current ruling government has essential decided if they're on the extremes that the best ideas to get together and suddenly get up these sorts

of people existed all societies the truth is that normally when you have a reasonable rule of law you can manage to keep everything going from day to day on occasions of these sort of fringes where their views have been inflamed unfortunately by interventions from the european union and the united states of america which i think are wholly unreasonable in the domestic politics of ukraine you will see them try and rise up and and deede those people are rather extreme some of them have very very ugly views indeed and of course they're demonstrating it through the violence that they're propagating on the innocent people of kiev and ukraine at this moment and talk about and nationalism again they as you and they do as do not seem that they came when choosing who to support do they. well you know the problem you've got here is that ultimately we've got a large number of effectively cold war dinosaurs in the us who seem to be. overall influencing the foreign policy there the truth is the warsaw pact is long since

over there is a reasonable understanding reason why russia would be interested in the future of ukraine given that nearly twenty percent of the population of ukraine are ethnically russian on the other hand the european union is ultimately upset because their appallingly dire trade deal was the start of this whole process and ultimately they were played by mr young a covert she created a much much better deal he alternately got the fifteen billion dollars which the ukrainian economy needed and that has actually say if the ukrainian economy in many ways ships and form instead of it being overrun by cheap western european imports which was going to be the case how the european union had their day right patrick and earlier on we had some gas here in this huge area and actually they said that's a current process say no i'm not but oh well may i but it seems like there has been more violence in the past few days than in the past few months combined can the cons of candy crowley's be controlled rather. well i think ultimately the

crowds will be controlled because essential while they are many in number overall they are not numerous what we are not seeing here is millions upon millions of people demonstrating remember what happened when we saw effectively the solidarity movement in poland that was a multi million person organization with broad political support look at the fall of the berlin wall multi-millions of reasonable people who want to get all of the horrible regime of erich honecker what you've got here is a very large number of people because the population of ukraine is commensurately a very large country but it is not a huge majority movement demanding change it is all timidly a very well organized terrorist rubble and they will be defeated in one way or shape or form in the near term the difficulty is are they going to tragically end up being martyred for their cause. which some of the may want to be that's the real tragedy because every day this fiasco carries on is another day when ukraine could

be getting on with economic reform and improving the values on the economy for its citizens absolutely financial and political commentator patrick a young mr patrick young thank you very much indeed for your time. your well the two months of protests in kiev turned into outright rising over there we can and the sun has a day of clashes left over seventy police wondered and that number has since doubled most suffered head injuries stabbings and gas poisoning but the u.s. and the e.u. justified by saying it was provoked by the ukrainian authorities. and alexander curry is an expert on international law says ukraine's government has shown a lot of patience with protests that would have been dispatched if they were in any european or american city the authorities have shown extraordinary patience in this

a sense serving the political purpose of the apparently moderate leaders when they speak to the western media that is to say they want to overthrow the existing state they don't trust elections because they fear even if they win elections there is a sufficiently big body of support for your code which that his political movement would survive and come back again as it did after the failures of the orange revolution after the infighting amongst the leaders then. there's been a day in the making and just a couple of days ago it looked like they may not happen at all but international peace talks on the syrian conflict are underway and he is bringing you special coverage from the talks in geneva. representatives of syria's government and opposition are finally in the same room talking for the first time since the start of this three year long conflict yet
