it's incredibly heavy bombing. it was a direct very shelter and everyone was buried underneath. all of the. violent clashes in gulf central kiev as ukrainian police tear down barricades and chase rioters on a government approach has two people have died. the crisis is being fueled by nationalists and radicals came to take the opportunity to push for revolution that. and also this hour syria's government and opposition sit face to face for the first time since the start of the conflict or the start of the
9:01 am
long anticipated peace talks in switzerland have exposed the parties very different views of the future. seem to national coming to you live from moscow hello and welcome to the program two people have died as antigovernment protests in the ukrainian capital grow into a fourth consecutive day with a whole new level of violence police have torn down barricades blocking central kiev entrées down rioters and the retaliation of protesters has been equally as forceful. is that for us right now saying we are hearing reports security forces are about to storm the city center again are there any signs of that.
9:02 am
i say can you hear us when in fact they have worn. or. open a lot of people who are in the fifth year of the cup but there are three the line might be breaking the connection is really poor coming here but i hope you can hear me that the police officers have warned everyone within the vicinity of the government take the place immediately before four o'clock for the right track right now and so i'm feeling an integration he told probably a final a little. government for i think the last. three people vote for it or for half of the price for the vehicle just behind the fine. people.
9:03 am
so this is yet another attempt by the police to push the protests this after the governmental quarter they've just started moving as we can see they're covering themselves with shields the protesters the rioters are running back but they're still throwing rocks at the police it is very violent here we see that flash bangs are being exploded. from time to time although the police are not resorting to any kind of special mean so far they haven't even youth class bans or non-lethal non-lethal form as far as we could see over here they've been waiting basically for hours for several hours before attempting another another go with the protesters we also heard earlier from the prime minister of ukraine who said that old those writing in the central kiev are considered to be terrorists and will soon heard from the some of the officials from behind the barricades from the police lines who've been saying that. they will use to a sixty. needed and this is the case as we can see right now from our vantage point
9:04 am
. the pair of the police are now in full in full swing dancing at the protesters who are still clearing rocks and and more with the cocktails at them the things we can see this need to leave and maybe several hundred policemen. and. there are still as you can hear banging their shields to give a proper psychological effect so that the protest is maybe more scared but now we can see there are no protesters remaining at the scene of the riots which has been the scene on the right for the past four days already that said the protesters have been pushed off from the governmental quarter several police lines and you see the one police line the other police line they're now securing the perimeter no major violence as we could see no. major violence from the police in fact i would say no violence from the police at all we can see the cops and the police are not
9:05 am
advancing to the independence square which is literally two hundred meters away from here they're not advancing there they're just basically what they're doing they're securing this ground here that the governmental quarter pushed the rioters from the scene and what they're doing the just securing it here now so they're quick clearly they're not intending to disperse the big protests the protests that the independence square the one which has been existing for several months already there we have rocks flying at the plate at the police again the protesters the rioters are back are back as we can see and there can also see another wounded person being carried it is getting violent again although this time it's quite clear that the violence is coming from the protesters from the rioters not from the police the police is merely protecting themselves we can see a most of cocktail there on the ground as well. again most of cocktails are being thrown rocks are being set. that the police. so this is look
9:06 am
this looks like yet another yet another retreat by the police. and the protesters are advancing again the rioters are bringing. about the police like they've done for several occasions already. they're charging they're charging again at the police as we can see throwing rocks all the time. she's actually your ships here reporting and we do apologize for some unstable connection from there which is understandable given the situation in kiev right now and here in the studio with me we have. our correspondent and. she is news that is very nice to see you both so first to. you do today's events. look like a serious escalation by well i have to i would say that we have to wait and see
9:07 am
until the suppose the storm or the takeover of my done by police happens because really if you look at it right now the pictures yes are horrific but you have to understand it's largely because they're burning tires every time you board a tire it looks like you know all hell is breaking loose that is indeed not the case and i've just read on one of the reports that russian news website says that one of the people who were supposed to was listed as dead turned out to be alive he fell off the gates to the stadium right when the riots were happening overnight and he actually turned out to be alive and even people of walking so we're minus one victim what's happening there right now is that really really it's something that the opposition and especially the people on the independence square the protesters wanted from the very beginning they needed to have a cause in order to basically break out in complete and total mayhem and that's exactly what they're doing the pictures are great. keep tweeting and. posting making posts on facebook saying that. they're of revolution is coming the
9:08 am
government needs to go and they're promising a lot and a lot of bloodshed and they have been doing that for a month and a half and i think finally they are getting to the point where are they can't really back down because what they were actually wishing for probably is happening so really i wouldn't say it's a great escalation i wouldn't say we're on the brink of a disaster however we do have to see what exactly happens once that is and once the police get there ok rena unfortunately we have to leave it there for a moment because our correspondent piece on of is in kiev right now closely following the events as they are unfolding that let's now get the latest from here peace out we're seeing people's numbers are swelling behind you what's going on where you are in a moment. well we've just had to relocate where we're speaking to you from we were all made on square before however i saw we talk about four people reinforcing barricades there stockpiling rocks and other things that could be used as as
9:09 am
weapons against against the riot police they getting ready for a possible assault by riot police. barricades there no it's not without. a state if it is a chance that out is going to happen we have been hearing that the riot police are expecting to make some kind of push to clear what's behind me right now you can see the black smoke from burning tires in flames looking like a scene from down to his inferno they wanted to clear that away. it's expected that was going to happen any time now so keep your close eye on what's going on there but yes the right is the getting ready to to try to deal with is far as they can deal with any assault by the police we've seen the prepare emotes of cocktails over the past couple of days we've seen plenty of them throwing today at the riot police here by rioters as well as many stone. in other things now the police did attempt
9:10 am
to clear what is going on just behind me right now earlier on today they've made a big push to to drive right is off the barricades that they've made the case they've made out of the the vehicles. of but not police vehicles from previous nights you know we were in the midst of that while it was happening and were able to capture all philip what was going on as the police moved in to disperse the use those demonstrators those riots as. we've seen is a series of explosions going off a plea police are trying to clear out the square as you can see a lot of people we're going to be moving this way a son it comes the cover can move to the left here yes shoot crowds of people if they're going to try to get away from those barricades that were were up there am i can i own police moving in with actually police the moving in there very very. there but the pushing back very forcefully here. hopefully we're going to be going to be fine where we are police have moved everybody off the barricade moved
9:11 am
everybody away from where they were almost our case you know we're going to have to get inside now we're going to. we have to we're going to go inside to get all the way of what's going on this is that. the police have decided that they are they getting rid of and they're clearing out everything that was at those barricades this has been the position of such a a standoff between writers and the police. of see the police deciding this that it was time to to put an end to that into into clear people out we saw a huge wave of people huge huge wave of people fleeing from those barricades and as police try to to disperse stores oh that's. oh that is that is. to say a policeman no hitting a somebody who's on the floor right there repeatedly beating that person so yes the police have now cleared out all the way some explosions you can hear that we've had
9:12 am
to come inside to the hotel which is nearby where those barricades were. in order to get away from from what was going on. there are some wounded demonstrators some people who'd been beaten as the police have now completely cleared all of that area away this all happened very very quickly it all happened in a space of just a few minutes we heard a few loud explosions i believe they were. they were noisy crates they were flash bang grenades and then a charge by the police which is completely cleared out that whole area of demonstrators some place have been in a standoff for the last the last few days but all of this does seem that it's set to continue for a while and. we'll be trying to get back out there soon as it's safe for us to do so to see what's going on on the tape where they painted. the city is used to seeing demonstrators trying to move back into the territory that they were just
9:13 am
expelled from by the by the riot police. who are keeping a watchful eye on what's going on just over my shoulder their. stadium here in kiev we are expecting more violent clashes protesters and dry it is rioters and riot police clash again in the ukrainian capital. they won't happen by a piece only about life from kiev thank you very much and the two months of protests in kiev turned into outright rioting over the weekend the first day of clashes left seventy police wounded and that number has since doubled suffered head injuries stabbings and gas poisoning but the you ask and the eternals to find that rest bias. saying it was provoked by the ukrainian soldiers. and let's now return to the studio and here with me we're going to as well as i'm across here so i have been discussing the situation k. for quite a while now under all the acts as well as witnesses say that those prices are not
9:14 am
overwhelming that is about why does the west support. street protests there are not that don't involve too many people well. for some of the if you want to if you want to look at the western stance towards what's going on in ukraine right now you've got to ask two questions one is why now why why is the west backing what seems to be some form of a revolutionary process against a democratically elected government when there is election a year away you know why not just you know back the opposition parties from abroad let. the guys fight their own party fight for an electoral mandate and sort it out that way i think you've probably got to look at the mismanagement of the european presidency that allowed this issue come to a head. coach into backing out so dramatically of the association agreement with the europeans leaving them with a lot of egg on their face and i think that probably only encouraged people like john mccain and others to come flying in and start telling the rest of the world
9:15 am
that the rest of the world was going to listen to them and cared about what they said you've also got to look at the other side of that got some skin in the game as they say europeans to incorporate a very large markers into their patch. on their terms and i think from our point of view you can understand why the europeans might like to be seen to be successful in . it also disguises the debacle of austerity and the euro at home. for the politicians as well so it's a bit of a reputation for both ways. thank you very much indeed let's now leave it at that but that we're now joined by journalist following the events in ukraine. mr neale clarke welcome it's very nice to see. here is a high that is so key here this is being described as a war zone the police apparently now have a green light to disperse rioters how do you think this will end up it will be quite clear as to what we're witnessing now in kiev where we're seeing an attempt
9:16 am
to reach in change up to overthrow the democratically elected government by violence. and yes this is not pro-democracy protests this is anti democracy yannick hope it was democratically elected and what's happening is that the protest is in kiev backed by the west side by the west encouraged by what the west are trying to topple the government using violence exam acceptable and just imagine if this was happening in the greed in paris or london or any other e.u. capital what we actually be from the west of the cape having a water cannons i think there was quite a big part of ukraine in the country or people. do you think do you think rioters will eventually bond down and what can make them do. what i think you know it's the people who from the outside who are kind of inciting the situation it's the e.u. leaders it's the e.u. politicians i think we've got to take a role in they've shown quite clearly they're critical but if we can. do so in the
9:17 am
region is that. similar to the situation in syria really where you've got the western powers again in control they can to topple the government present a sad and make showing here and there should be a new crowd that they are really extremists they will go to any steps and so i think what's your question it's really up to those foreign powers who are backing these demonstrations these rioters in ukraine to actually change their course and say to the book sit down talk the government didn't work if. you could play smear get his would you. expect a very every twenty minutes an equal to the time. so and then why not make it just because. the president is a poor. claim talks with the opposition that he hung the chance to start negotiations earlier why did he wait until the crisis reached a boiling point that we're going to you can really blame him because i think he's in a very tough situation because he's down what i read r.g.p.
9:18 am
. going to break. it with you because nothing if. i think he's us should have no win situation you know he is the democratically elected president of ukraine and yet he's faced with the attempt right now just like ours to topple him. in the name of democracy that's what makes it so all well the. elites you've got contemplative occupation good again here so i don't think you can really blame him because of too much i think he did a very difficult position ok only saying one thing but he seems to be happening in europe i think the response of the governor will be much tougher i was in spain twenty twelve where there were anti austerity protests in madrid every night and i saw what the police did there far more brutal in ukraine but nobody said anything in europe about that because of spain is a member of the you. are right a journalist clark thank you very much indeed and again we have to apologize for the sound quality here and alexander merker is an expert on international law says ukraine's government has shown
9:19 am
a lot of patients with process that would have been disposed of if they were in any european or american city. the authorities who show extraordinary patience in this matter i mean you heard some of the other commentators. discussing this there is absolutely no conceivable way that this sort of situation would have been allowed to happen in any of the european city or in any. state the authorities would be planned and clear the street to go the government to sack to do great restraint in this matter is to protest is. encouraged by the opposition leaders have not. been taking the situation this is been the way through this whole crisis to begin with the opposition leaders who crocheted i mean extraordinary sense of entitlement insisting. that things be done the way they want to be done.
9:20 am
that is not the way to achieve concrete noise or to negotiate. and let's now go back to studio and with me here is. our news editor as well as a. correspondent here and how it all it all started remember about the ukraine association deal which. failed surgery show us about the yes exactly yes not the latest one the. the anti demonstrators demonstration basically a package of laws that are highly unpopular not to not to mention the fact that they were not quite put through we go as far as a understand i really tried to do this issue and still a little bit lost there but i understand that they had there were some steps that they kind of went around and accepted the. the laws anyways and essentially what's happening is that people have essentially been told that they're not allowed to be
9:21 am
out on the street which is rather i guess a personal point of view i would say the polls are the decision because you have. essentially a mob on the street already you have people that are not happy you don't want to provoke them because going back to what i said previously that's exactly what they want they wanted a provocation and they got it because if we think back to what happened over the weekend was there some sort of dispersal was there something that happened to set off this fiery picture that we're seeing right now no people just went and decided hey there have been these. cordons of police standing by the rod and several other governmental buildings protecting them from the protesters because the protesters have been threatening to take over these buildings for more than a month now because that is their goal so they have these police cordons and several hundred people from i believe. a silly party they went over and sicily started started attacking the police and then the
9:22 am
police buses of fire and then they started throwing molotov cocktails and they started taking apart the pavement and throwing rocks i mean they were the ones who started this mayhem that we're seeing. and yet we're not hearing anything about the fact that all of this has yes the laws were obviously obviously something that contributed to it but the warrants the main reason why we have fire on our screens right now because it was really terribly well as far as the politics around the graphic legislation is concerned because as we were said that was basically a red flag to the to the feelings of protesters who saw themselves facing inevitable and very violent the west is blaming going to college for. their crime down on protesters but people fools their discontent about the economic situation in the country but they will all they blame get a call that you're being too mild yes you're going to look he's

a prime minister or is a president so presidents are going to get psyched off no matter what. just going to is going to go for being too more than once i'm is going to be signed off for being too liberal by the conservatives that's for sure but the manner in which that legislation was handled the manner in which it was put through was in my opinion on why is it just added fuel to an already raging fire a couple things that we've seen since then in ukraine one was yesterday if i'm not mistaken and it might have been over the last forty eight hours where people involved were close to the to the protests receiving as the masses s.m.s. messages from somewhere saying that they had been registered on some database as a participant or a party to a form of illegal civil. or riot that may be part of the new legislation that's coming there's also a ban on helmets for example and we saw helmets in public places now that's also
9:24 am
there's also a similar ban in germany for example in france. where if you were. out of protest where there's a risk of violence or civil disorder. simply breaking i'm sure what i'm talking about the west reaction has already imposed sanctions on some european officials it blames for the violence in kiev and there are similar calls in the u. right now and knox lebeau days as seen in international relations lecture and research from moscow state university explains why he believes the decision is hypocritical. and what we're hearing from the united states from the european union is of course the most cynical hypocrisy after the last few years of the brutal police repression of the occupy wall street movement in the united states and the anti liberal austerity dic times that have been instituted around the european union right literally tens of millions of protesters out onto the street. them

calling against the violence in the ukraine where the majority of the injuries are the fancy of gays have been. from the police that of suffered injuries from our calls cocktails firebombs knife stabbings club meetings with morning stars a withered shots from trebuchets constructed in the my dime and bows and arrows that mean there were frequently seeing a level of violence from the protesters that is where the real violence in these protests is coming from just. and back to the studio with me as i have a cross here and. well what's next can we expect that kind of civil war that i think. anybody is not. interested what's going on a kid is going to be spending a lot of time looking at the phone that's for sure i think it's pretty clear that the authorities have given any of the major organizations that work that are based around my down they've been warned to leave so there's

a curfew has been in place as peter reported he's been put in place there. fortunately given the reports and the images we've seen of armored armored personnel carrier. not far from i don i think it looks like there's going to be some intensification of the kind of resources materials that the police will be deploying and i expect a reasonably violent confrontation unfortunately tonight in my down i think they're going to try to move to clear it out. not only we are going to see the either make it or break it situation in here you know slated to come in about an hour and a half i guess so we were basically bracing ourselves and watching what's. that is played out. crucial for talks that you know which is starting to have the opposition although in fairness i'm not necessarily sure. the opposition has a strong hand to play in talks with the other coach and they don't have an
