3:00 pm
ukraine is in rest with crowds laying siege to official buildings in over a dozen regions this despite the president's pledge to revoke controversial protests and reshuffle the government. in kiev police arresting gang believed to be behind violent riots in the capital we look at the radical elements in the midst of the chaos seeking to escalate the situation. syria's warring factions agree for the first time to hold face to face talks off to separate meetings with the united nations mediator at the geneva two peace conference. and a fourth bomb goes off bringing the day's death toll to at least six with dozens more injured ahead of the anniversary of the two thousand and eleven uprising.
3:01 pm
this is an international live from austria center here in moscow which just midnight and ten pm in ukraine where protests are raging throughout the west of the country and in several central provinces that's despite the government's offer of further concessions to calm the unrest with president which pledging to free those detained during riots in the capital kiev earlier this week now these are live pictures coming to you here at the moment and we cannot get more now from peter all of a who is in kiev where tensions clearly are high but it is peaceful compared to what we're seeing throughout other parts of the country tell us what's happening in those regions at the moment. well what we're seeing now is violent unrest in
3:02 pm
around half of the regions in ukraine thirteen in total we've seen demonstrators gathering outside of government buildings and in those thirteen regions those buildings are either currently under siege or have now been occupied by by rioters now we've seen vicious standoff between riot police and writers throughout friday we started on thursday evening in many of these regions mostly in the west of the country but also now spreading to the the central regions of ukraine as well as what's going on here in kiev now many officials in those regions have caved in under the pressure and resigned from their posts many of those officials have resigned from their foot. in the face of mounting pressure from opposition demonstrators now some of the. some of the worst scenes of violence we've seen of being in the city of see in which there was right is try to take government buildings on thursday evening now they force
3:03 pm
a bit of standoff with riot police throughout friday and they are now in control of the government headquarters the local government headquarters in that city also in frank. in a city in the west to see a similar thing this. is an out in control of the the main government buildings there in this is spread out to say throughout the west of the country and also now reaching into the central regions of ukraine so what's happening now in kiev the authorities there saying they are willing to talk they're offering some concessions so what is their plan. well what we have seen is something of a tentative peace for the last twenty four hours or so just over the last twenty four hours here in the a crane in capital but the main flashpoint in the city has been between writers and riot police over any of the economic stadium which is is about two hundred meters over to my left right now. have been restarted we've seen this wall of flame that's
3:04 pm
been separating rises from riot police also as i was making my way here to talk to you we sold bonds appearing on. a just be high on the of the barricades there bringing out box after box after box of molotov cocktails as well of sights of of rocks those rocks of mostly been. the paving stones of the the city of kiev so we'll be looking to see what happens. continues. quite an elaborate system of barricades street there to try and protect themselves. from to protect themselves many potential movement by the police we haven't seen anything to suggest that's going to happen anytime soon but yes they're all reinforcing in rearming going on there what we have heard from the government here in ukraine. the president said that he would be looking to change and make changes to the laws that were brought in on the sixteenth of january he didn't say that he would review repealing those laws but we could expect to see that they may be softened in some way these were
3:05 pm
laws that were brought in to try and talk to leave the demonstrations here also we're hearing that the opposition on the government agree that anybody who's been detained by police so far in this conflict will be will be granted a pardon now what we are going to see is a special session of parliament take place here next week in june that session president said that he would be looking to reshuffle his government to move personnel around to better the better deal with the situation the state's going on here now he did also talking about the violence that we've seen point a finger towards. foreign influences he is saying that that had been had been forelimbs is behind some of the most serious cases of violence that we've seen in the followed up by saying that he would do everything in his power to try and stop violence in the country and said he would use every legal means available to him but what we are seeing though is continuing violence and in some cases escalating violence in the west of ukraine and that spreading into central regions here as
3:06 pm
well in kiev right now though that tentative peace does seem to be continuing however as however the writers are arming themselves and sharing up their barricades as we speak right now peter thanks very much indeed for that live update there from central kiev no doubt more from you throughout the night that's artie's peter all of it there well earlier i spoke with the former aide to foreign policy chief javier solana who was involved in mediating a deal to end the crisis in ukraine ten years ago and he insists that the growing pressure from the e.u. is in no way aggravating the situation. but i don't see that e.u. the european union to see flame in this situation i don't think so i mean i'm not to you know if he's now in i i don't know exactly what has happened they've just minutes we also understand that the e.u. in some ways as has been encouraging in effect a change of government they're saying there should be a snap election immediately in other words compromising and if it is democrat only . elected position. i don't think anybody because of the european
3:07 pm
union has said that a change in the person has had to take place i have stated i keep on saying as the same thing did the government has said to me while ago that he would be made to know the road to duma the capital in the coming days if there may be a reshuffle of the government if that these it is true to finish reman between governable she shouldn't do that person deal bullshitted i think you'll do better. meanwhile the u.s. secretary of state john kerry had some more strong words for the ukrainian government he was speaking at the devil swelled economic forum in switzerland a military solution kabanov has more on the american reaction. the u.s. secretary of state did call for an end to the violence but it shouldn't interestingly worded statements actually take a listen to your. we are working with our partners of the government of ukraine. to drench the concerns is. dialogue.
3:08 pm
and i literally just. year the efforts on the ground working with president. to try to achieve a move in this direction in the next days we will stand with the people of ukraine similar in fact more strongly worded a reaction here in washington on capitol hill we saw a joint statement from a bipartisan group of senators led by john mccain also pinning the blame directly on the government of ukraine now in that statement they had expressed what they called regret that some protesters have resorted to violence measures but says that and i quote the responsibility for the growing political crisis lies squarely with the governments quote heavy handed tactics and undemocratic actions that was the joint statement from lawmakers here now the white house this week again threatened sanctions it does seem that washington is hoping not to actually resort to taking that step quite yet really waiting to see what steps the government of president
3:09 pm
dmitry and a coach will take first but it's not all empty threats we did see earlier this week the u.s. announcing that it had revoked the visas of several top ukrainian officials who were allegedly implicated in ordering police violence against protesters not the latest round of violence but the clashes that took place in november and december meanwhile germany france and several other european countries also said on friday they had summoned the ukrainian ambassador in their respective capitals this was to protest kiev response to the unrest which activists it which pardon me activists say at least five people have died. ukrainian police claim they've arrested an armed gang involved in the worst of the rioting there in kiev and police also say they've seized two assault rifles four pistols and hundreds of rounds of ammunition and authorities claim to have evidence that the gang supplied arms to the protesters. has more on the extremist ambitions overshadowing ukraine. kiev convulsed by violence. molotov cocktails pitched battles between protesters
3:10 pm
and police a capital city spiraling out of control. and amid all its the radicals and extremists who are spearheading this violence. and is ready teacher in a key of synagogue glickman is following it all from his hospital bed twenty four hours before the violence erupted he was beaten and stabbed by unidentified man it was the second attack on a jew in his many days we asked the local jewish community to comment on the matter but they refused hearing retribution from far right groups those watching on from abroad are also deeply disturbed by recent developments what. of course we're worried about jews in ukraine at the moment because if there is anti-semitic violence there will be no mercy for anyone neither women nor children. with nazi off fascist images clearly on display the concern is that even the nationalist
3:11 pm
leaders are no longer in control of their supporters and the evidence of support for ukrainian wartime leaders who lead death squads against the jews is apparent on the streets of kiev right beside the stage of kiev's independence square the heart of the protest there is a big banner with step on going down on it the 1940's insurgent leader in the ukraine but despite there's lots of controversy surrounding his role in history in many countries this would hardly surprise anyone in today's hearing but that the other scene of the protests beside what seems to be future molotov cocktails we see a peculiar graffiti on the wall an old eric groom which is unlikely to have any double meanings in european countries because back in the 1940's it was used by some of the nazi divisions. now that ultra wing activists have become the core of the protest some analysts say dispense bleak picture for the country it. is most of those rioting do not take orders from our legal opposition forces they are radical nationalists football fans revolutionary romanticists and inadequate people it's
3:12 pm
a mixed mob but radical nationalists are the only ones with knowledge and skill when it comes to mass riots they know how to handle themselves it's not only unsafe for the public but also for the future. alexi russia ski r.t. reporting from kiev in ukraine. and ukraine's leader has said he's ready for further talks with the opposition you can head to r.t. dot com to find out more about mat development also online we're providing minute by minute updates on the situation and reporting on the improvised weaponry being used by street mobs against police officers. october himi the united nations mediator for the syrian peace talks says government and opposition delegations have agreed to hold direct negotiations quote in the same room even if it's going to have is following developments there in geneva. it
3:13 pm
began frankly to seem like the negotiations were turning into a complete disaster until your special envoy on syria lakhdar brahimi came out at the end of day and said that he did manage to get both the syrian authorities and the opposition present here in geneva to get in the same room and talk that's going to that's going to happen on saturday and he didn't really provide a lot of details about what they're going to talk about he said that even the ways that he managed to talk them into it are his diplomatic secrets which she is not ready to share with journalists but he did say that right now the most important thing is for both sides of this conflict to understand what they're here for in geneva and what these talks are all about because the negotiations were supposed to start at eleven am this friday and. they were supposed to sit down at the same table and formally greet each other with mr brahimi present there as well but since the opposition said they were not ready to sit down at the same table with the of
3:14 pm
tory's formally the talks never started so throughout the entire day you are special envoy was meeting separately both with the authorities and with the opposition their representatives have been coming out to journalists and accusing each other basically of sabotaging the in negotiations and it became clear to us that both say the only way out of this crisis is through negotiations based on the agreements reached at geneva one the opposition says that they want to talk about forming a transition transitional government in syria without president assad there while the authorities are saying they're ready to talk about cease fires they're ready to talk about joint anteater efforts and when it comes to president assad future you know political future that has to be decided by a nationwide election with anyone willing taking part and the people of syria deciding that the talks now are going to start really on saturday we don't really know what exactly they're going to be talking about but really getting even them in
3:15 pm
the same room is already quite deep. matic success. or despite the differences the government and opposition earlier agreed to discuss a localized ceasefires deliveries you've humanitarian aid and prisoner swaps let's cross live now to our coffee the syrian political activist i'm up so there are going to get into the same room it is a positive note isn't it but do you think anything productive will come out of that meeting tomorrow well i think at least that is a positive sign that they have crossed the first hurdle. i think. where something positive if you could regard to that an exchange of frank exchange of ideas is something positive then yes something positive will come out it will have it will be more they would be able to achieve anything substantial i really don't. i don't think the current opposition representatives sort of speak in geneva are even present give representatives of the whole two and spectrum of the syrian opposition
3:16 pm
there are quite a few factions that are missing including have the syrian national coalition themselves. who the mandate they have this is a big question i think they would be interested in coming out to their fans and you know people who support them and say well we've achieved something as everyone but as you just said they are not representative of the entire opposition so actually if an agreement is made it doesn't necessarily mean all factions will support it so does it not make it entirely a waste of time. well let's put it this way i mean. a sort of to misty because at least people are sitting with each other for the first time you know three years almost into the conflict and representatives of the opposition are yet to sit down with representatives of the governments to invest since i am. optimistic and again if they can exchange a few ideas where people can reflect on them a little iran and probably right people but what about that main main stumbling
3:17 pm
block opposition wants a sad out who wants to put in a transitional government and the government there says a sad state is in i mean when you when are they going to get over that deadlock well they won't because because the whole you see the whole the whole approach of the of the opposition is that geneva one says we need to buy a car and that car has to be yellow of the syrian government says yes geneva one says we have to buy a car probably doesn't specify that it has to be yellow in a sense you know we could it could be very could be blue so why do you insist so do you know what in a sense says that a transitional government with full executive powers that could be formed from current government to you know officials has to be for now the opposition insists that means the president should go it doesn't see that and have it really said that
3:18 pm
geneva one wouldn't have been concluded anyway nobody would have agreed. on that so they're trying to hijack in a sense i think the geneva one really key to their favor and try to you know this corner balls off side to this week and just finally i'm up iran consider conspicuous by its absence there because it could well have attended those talks but the u.n. at the last minute withdrew the invitation would it have made any difference if iran was there. i think if we look at geneva as a long process as step by step each one building on the one preceding then logically i believe the issue should be that we start with a regional understanding that would suit quirked any domestic understanding because as long as you know the specific states in the region still send money and how many have good training and intelligence to people on the ground to the control you know to kill and continue military action nothing's going to happen so the way to do it
3:19 pm
is to sit down with a night of saudi arabia turkey and syria what are your interests here how to be guaranteed i'm happy to guarantee something and then move on to the end to mystic sort of negotiation and that's where iran has to be and you know if any usual background or basis could be achieved it would it would be a missed year on is there however i think the saudis are not yet ready to sit down the iran hand on a negotiation table and split the you know the rich use all the interests of the redraw. region they want to try to get concessions. as much as possible before sitting on that right now but thank you very much great to talk to you on this other walk of life here a lot a critical perspectives on this thank you very much more news coming away after a very short break this is r.t. international.

which has followed the ouster of former president mohammed morsi of the muslim brotherhood back in the summer last year and also today three people have been killed in clashes around the country the clashes again have become commonplace every week we're seeing supporters of mr morsy and supporters of the government clashing often with police officers involved as well exchanging takeouts rocks petrol bombs and really on the eve of egypt's revolution on the third anniversary which is taking place tomorrow a very uncertain feeling across cairo. and islamic extremist group has admitted to carrying out the attack on the police building of them to me from the institute of islamic political thought in london says the muslim brotherhood is not responsible for any of the explosions. what i am sure about one hundred percent is that the muslim brotherhood has nothing to do with this and they would never go down that

course their best assets at the moment is to continue their peaceful protests and there is no way on the face of us we can resolve this without going back to democracy without going back to the people and the people decide through the ballot box what they want. the syrian turmoil is also behind an escalation in cyber warfare and on our website report how a pro-government group of syrian hackers targeted cnn's twitter and facebook accounts and what sort of confusion the hackers were able to cause. plus is facebook facing the end research as i can the websites rise to a disease epidemic that users are apparently getting cured on r.t. dot com you can read about a study which predicts when the social network could collapse. much has been spent to get sort she's transport up to speed for the winter olympics which start in just over a couple of weeks from now but there's actually
