step will be potential election. broadcasting live from our studios in moscow this is our t.v. it with our weekly program and ukrainian opposition leader all egg book says taking over the justice ministry in kiev wasn't the plan because it could hurt tuesday's negotiations with the government a group of riders is occupying that building right now while a local administration headquarters have been the target of protesters elsewhere in the country artie's peter oliver is in kiev. the justice ministry has been occupied by the opposition group calling themselves common cause no we are hearing that they are the same group that it occupied both the energy and the agricultural ministry
7:02 pm
here previously they have been driven out of some of the areas that they had previously occupied before and they're now moving into this new location now they entered the building without any resistance and they're currently building a system of barricades this is what's happening on sunday night on saturday night we saw at the convention center just near to independence square stormed by rioters some quite ugly scenes at times we saw. cocktails rocks burning tires and partly even a hunger an aide in one instance during standoff that was going on there now the violence that started here in kiev initially spread to the the west of the country to start off with now it's government buildings that have been targeted they've been subject to sieges by rioters and in many cases they've just been simply overrun by the numbers that have come out on the streets in the city of. we have
7:03 pm
heard that riot police have retaken the main government building there and also in the city you. have seen the government buildings there coming under siege by rioters the police were able to drive them off but they are now. shearing up their position. prepare for perhaps a further assault there by rioters it's a scene we've seen across the west of the country something that's spreading into the central and southern areas of ukraine so what we are seeing right now across ukraine is despite concessions that have been made by the by victory on the code which are in the government here that they would try and change the constitution to do. trying gave opposition leaders positions in the government that they would offer and to anybody who'd being detained by police on the condition that rice is left government buildings we are seeing any movement from those riots is in

any way that they would voluntarily remove themselves from any of the barricades in fact and what we are seeing is that that building more of those barricades are he's put are all over there in kiev now one radical gang of protesters in the city allegedly had these weapons in their possession police seized assault rifles pistols and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from the group authorities claim the gang supplied arms to other rioters and there were attacks on some clarity forces during the week one police officer was wounded and two others taken hostage reportedly tortured and then later released. today to my head and bound my arms and legs with mosque tape and taped up my knees as well. more than yes we were attacked by a group of masked youngsters they surrounded us cream and the cops and their wrists hands could take everything from us our wallets ourselves and everything.

we had done nothing to them we were just coming out of a cafe after lunch with the mob surrounded. the u.s. has imposed sanctions on some ukrainian officials which it believes instigated violence against of the protesters and the european union has discussed similar actions however legal expert and a political blogger alexander macoris believes it is a long shot because of divisions within the e.u. . i don't think it's actually a close as it makes out one important change that's happened is that the presidency of the european union the rotating presidency has passed to greece and greece has made it absolutely clear that it's not frankly sympathetic to sanctions so there are divisions within the european union itself there are some hardliners like mr shultz but i'm not convinced that everybody in the european union agrees to this i think the next week may be very important we will see what happens at the

parliamentary session on tuesday if there is a political breakthrough there then by haps we could see the end and into the violence. the take over of government buildings and riots are mostly happening in kiev and the western half of the country as this map shows you as the authorities struggle to control the situation western governments are urging them to secure democracy artie's election looks at how the unrest is unfolding. those young people into streets of ukraine by seizing temperatures are writing didn't you get it before europe. ever since the first rocks and molotov cocktails were hurled at the police in kiev mar sunday the fishes in europe and the united states have started a pressure wave of accusations aimed at the actions of the authorities against what they called peaceful protesters.
7:07 pm
we have all been for in the unison to give all we expect from the ukrainian government then these should democratic freedom in particular the opportunity for peaceful demonstrations they protect life and that the use of violence does not take place. but people beating police on the ground bombarding the lines with explosive project tiles and even taking them hostage can hardly be classified as peaceful even pictures of rioters carrying far arms are surfacing i'm quite skeptical that these riots will be. dealt with effectively in the near future but a nation of. neo nazi. therefore i do not think that everyone will follow the opposition leader us to all of what a peaceful resolution of these of these some of these deals. on the islands and they will continue for some time. over the past two months there you know
7:08 pm
my don has changed in form and meaning what started as a peaceful approach. has turned into a display of violence on both sides it has now grown in size too with almost half of the country's regional administration stake in over spawning serious concerns the country could fall apart any sort of splits in the area or each could happen within the next two weeks must be described as quite possible because get. and what they have on our forces will be split it probably in two parts. we have two different that is the opposition is still working horns with those in power trying to get a better deal with the president. but the protestors storming a police base and doing the people who are acting as their leaders suggest they no longer want to listen to anyone and care little about any agreed truth alexi russia ski r.t. reporting from kiev in ukraine. unlike their western neighbors in eastern ukraine
7:09 pm
is mostly in support of president viktor yushchenko which people there are getting worried about what is going on in their country fearing that the protestors could be pulling ukraine in the wrong direction artie's possibly or reports the industrial heart of the ukraine is a place where the majority has been silent until now the vine and pictures from kiev are spurring people here into action but not in support of the anti-government riot has but the most of us not the i cannot sit at home when there are such things happening in ukraine the protests in kiev a horrible we are brothers we're all ukrainians in the east and south of the country support for president general coffee which is high tolerance for why it is low these demonstrators blame opposition parties for using hot headed students to destabilize the country. young people are like zombies they get information from
7:10 pm
the internet and this information is only one side the usa in the west are paying for this information to be put out. gregory greene is a correspondent with the local newspaper he once order and for as long as the government provides it he says he'll supporters will open up much of the message of the protesters regularly changes their main idea in the beginning was to join the european union the next weekend it was political change and they wanted the president to go now i think even the protesters cannot. why they're demonstrating unlike the demonstrators in kiev most of the more than four million people who live in the country's most populous region don't believe ukraine's future lies in europe losing off. russian market is of course the oil in this region so that is the main reason why. people. don't. want to injure. european association protests just complain the queue of rioters and

wasting time on the streets while it's the country's east that keeps the economy alive and if you crane was to join europe now its factories would be turned into scrap people here in vision a different future to the antigovernment protests what they want is a quick into the demonstration and a deal to join the russian customs union this they say will give them the stability and security that the key of protests are threatening to unravel policia r.t. donates ukraine. things are developing rapidly in ukraine but you can keep track of all of it via our live updates timeline on r.t. dot com after the break we will take a look at other stories including the latest from the geneva two syrian peace talks are with r.t. international. economic

7:13 pm
and welcome back you're watching the weekly here on r t the syrian government and the opposition have struck a deal that will let civilians leave the city of homes parts of which are held by rebels came after two days of talks mediated by international envoy lakhdar brahimi at the peace conference in geneva a joint statement is expected to be made on monday. is in damascus with details. the syrian government center in a position agreed on sunday in geneva to allow the civilians outside that if you keep your homes in central syria we can expect things to happen as soon as on
7:14 pm
monday a horse has been injured we are clashes between karen army and the rebel forces for almost two years now last year we look at the weekend we saw the press of picture at least two districts were badly destroyed in two others it was shelling many residents fled of course that didn't touch hands of time they were trapped in the fight and today up to roll this time of course they face a severe shortage and of food and medical supplies and it's the third largest city in syria and we're talking about thousands of people here mr bremer of resenting the u.n. have never believed at geneva two peace talks also told press that women children as well as a number of adult male civilians conferred as knowing militants and this is very important will be evacuated from the city of homs but it's still not clear exactly how it will be organized as the fight in the every still continues of course we can consider it as a serious achievement in the talks between the syrian rival sides of the first
7:15 pm
dialogue they have in almost three years devastating war and a very positive one but still a lot has to be done as other areas here in syria remain besieged and even here in damascus it is the community tearing situation is high my colleague he got peace cannot has been following the talks in geneva the famous one another let's talk to one another a former simply impossible to imagine even at the beginning of the week just twenty four hours before the start of the conference the opposition couldn't decide whether to go to switzerland or not and when they finally did arrive i think that is the problem and i said that i don't think the problem with any solution without us agoraphobe our stepping down it became clear both sides had a completely different understanding of the talks goals the rebels pressed for a son to step down official seem to be ready to talk about almost anything except the president's future but at least outside players agreed to this is strictly up

to the syrians to decide. the seriousness of themselves had the primary responsibility to end the country determine their particular system and future and start rebuilding their country but one world powers left and direct talks were supposed to begin the opposition refused to sit down at the same table with the other side we came here to talk and they are not ready finally when it seemed the negotiations were completely bust special envoy to syria lakhdar brahimi announced he did manage to get both sides to meet and so they finally did negotiating through him but still in the same room and face to face prisoners and kidnappings humanitarian aid and localized ceasefires were the first issues on the table with more pressing topics awaiting discussion despite all the emotions accusations and preconditions were heard this week these talks are the first real chance for a diplomatic solution in syria and after nearly three years of bloodshed and

the devils the world economic forum now for the last four days the world's most privileged money movers they've been promising and pledging is with the case that doubles mazie is no policies in place with how the british prime minister david cameron talking about reshowing jobs back to britain iran's leader has some rouhani worry investors for a post sanction era out of it a tinseltown two with goldie hawn teaching us all about the importance of meditation in amongst these days we had surveillance global warming the most is all of the universe in between the smoke kind of haze and go to champagne they want to focus on the global financial recovery seem to take a bit of a backseat they say enough a good may but we're not exactly in a booming economy just now so there's that sense of complacency coming into this when i spoke to the head of the o.e.c.d. and i also asked him what concerns him the most complacency the fact that people feel comfortable that they have lost

a few or that they have lost the sense of urgency and that they think we're out of the woods we're not out of the woods growth is very slow on a problem it is historically high. inequalities are growing there's a great loss of trust in everything that we have built in a hundred years in all our institutions so we're not the crisis is not over sure let's continue to work hard don't feel complacent now one thing that ran through the sporran was income inequality and the dangers that can come from it the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. doubles is the highest part of europe and it's a place where the global elite come here to discuss how to enrich themselves and of course improve the lives of the ninety nine percent that live down below as has tried to raise our image this year of the hierarchy system by introducing the topic

of income inequality which the forum said was the biggest threat to the global economy right now but you know when you've got eight c. billionaires in attendance it's quite difficult to take that one seriously as a certain element of irony to that and according to the latest reports half of the world's poorest population that is three and a half billion people now have the same amount of well as the eighty five richest people added to that the one percent richest now have an accumulated wealth of one hundred ten trillion dollars that's sixty five percent more than the world's poorest i am from up here is difficult to imagine how those people will become a priority for the people of well we are all equal in the eyes of god no matter how many millions or billions that we might have to weigh in the bank at this time of year the whole.
