look. i'm. i'm. coming up on our t.v.'s if you've been through an airport in canada you may have been spied on new leaked documents by edward snowden show that canadian intelligence use of free air for wife by to track passengers electronic activities even after they were at the airport details of those revelations and a moment. what do you have in common with terrorists and edward snowden james clapper i think they're all in national security threat after his testimony to the senate to the national intelligence director is the only report describes that quine as the preferred currency of criminals is that really the case find out coming up. and in colorado or food producers are being denied the option of

labeling the foods as g.m.o. free we'll talk about this and other food fights around the country with elizabeth percentage she also talked about her new documentary geo n.g.'s later in the show. it's friday january thirty first four pm in washington d.c. i'm perry i'm boring you're watching r t america. we began with a new revelation that has travelers passing through canadian airports considering going offline a document leaked by edward snowden was just released by c.b.c. news in canada showing that canada as electronic spy agency used em for me sent from the free internet service at a major canadian airport to track the wireless devices of thousands of ordinary online passengers for days after they left the terminal the operation by the

communications security establishment canada or a c s e c was revealed in a power point obtained by c.b.c. news the documents show that the agency collected metadata on individuals when they log on to the internet and international airport and use that information to track the people for over two weeks cyber security experts in canada said this is certainly on lawful and before this news broke the s.e.c. chief john forster sounded like he was in agreement cease under its legislation cannot target canadians anywhere in the world or anyone in canada including visitors to canada. and yet to c.b.c. analysts say these new documents show that airline passengers as a comedian airports are clearly in canada the c s e c issued a statement and response to the report saying that no canadians or foreign travelers were tracked no canadian communications were or are targeted collected or

used and as the c.s.c. see faces tough questions the u.s. is beginning to take its own look at its own surveillance agency's defense secretary chuck hagel announced yesterday that president obama will nominate navy vice admiral mike rogers as the next director of the national security agency this is contrary to the white house appointed review panel's recommendation to place a civilian as the head of the n.s.a. the defense secretary also announced that richard ledgett a civilian has been selected to serve as the deputy director of the n.s.a. you might remember allegedly from an interview that aired on sixty minutes in december he was asked if the u.s. should strike a deal with edward snowden so my personal view is yes it's worth having a conversation about i would need assurances that the remainder of the data could be secured and my bar for those assurances would be very high it would be more than just an assertion on his part. these changes come in just two weeks after president
4:04 pm
obama's speech to reform the government's surveillance program and vice admiral mike rogers will have to undergo a senate confirmation that it will not. when the police officers use deadly force they rarely rarely face criminal prosecution and they usually claim that they feared for their safety while police officers job is dangerous the number of cops killed on duty is that historic lows meanwhile the number of people killed by police officers remains steady artie's ramazan gondo shows us how this trend is devastating families in southern california. modern day police are whipped with high power firearms state of the art body armor and military style vehicles with so many tools in their arsenal victims of police brutality wonder why officers feel they need to resort to deadly force.
4:05 pm
over here. they have no justification for using that type of excessive force and ultimately killing him and since knowing his own words i have no other options but to be just faced a hell ron thomas is still searching for justice after police officers were acquitted in the killing of his son kelly one of the officers jason cinelli is actually trying to get his job back. the defense in the case they said kelly thomas was was overly that he was he was reacting and in a violent way he was a he was a suspect on the street who was who was uncontrollable but when you watch the video it doesn't really add up there's still a memorial here for kelly thomas more than two years after he was beaten by fullerton police officers when law enforcement uses such violent force they usually justify it saying that they feared for their safety but for victims' families that explained. doesn't make any sense there are signs that say that may be safer than
4:06 pm
ever to be a police officer on the streets today thirty three police officers were killed by gunfire in two thousand and thirteen according to a report by the national law enforcement officers memorial fund that's the lowest number since eighteen eighty seven in twenty twelve the f.b.i. recorded four hundred ten just a five zero homicides by law enforcement that only includes deaths where a felon was involved for some reason or other the police officers always found all they have to do is say i theory for my life i feared for the life of somebody in the public and their exonerated faxon is fighting to keep police officers accountable after the shooting death of her son michael knight the maid father of four was mistaken for a robbery suspect and a downey california police officer shot him in the back with a machine gun people don't know that our cops are carrying machine guns they don't know that these tanks are out here they don't know that they're wearing heavy armor they don't know this they think the cops are like they were with with mayberry r.f.d. that's
4:07 pm
a kind of cop say things are out there and it's not anymore across the u.s. prosecutors are many times reluctant to go after abusive police officers even when there's video evidence. ron thomas is a former law enforcement officer himself but the good officers men and women in law enforcement must police are on. this particular group of officers responded this way because they've never been held in check there to protected by the peace officer bill of rights they're not held accountable they can do whatever they want and kelly's case ultimately proves that the law enforcement bill of rights has shielded abusive police from laws they are paid to enforce they are not held to the same standards as the general public they're just not held accountable but in crime rates are down across america life for police. also seems to be safer. but as cases of police abuse continue to
4:08 pm
people like facts in iran thomas will continue to fight for transparency and justice in forcing california remember. this isn't quite the week for because the digital cryptocurrency the much anticipated hearings for big coin watchers took place in new york earlier this week where the state department of financial services and now its plans to enact a bit license to regulate the quaint companies while the two day hearing made seem like a more legitimate following a form of currency and gun unexpected mention and a us and tell document on wednesday director of national intelligence james clapper released the agency's worldwide threat assessment of the u.s. intelligence community and says quote a virtual currencies most notably because they are fast becoming a medium for criminal financial transfers through online payment companies james
4:09 pm
clapper i testified in front of the senate intelligence committee on wednesday and decline was not mentioned one staring the hearing i was joined earlier by jared tena that point entrepreneur and founder of the new multimedia company money dot com i asked him a few things because really pose a threat to u.s. intelligence i think thread is a bit of an overstatement i prefer to use the word concern and i think we should also apply to all digital currency in general in sorry in general. when you look at digital currency as you have things like liberty reserve ripple and big court as well and a lot of people just lump them together liberty reserve is essentially anonymous paper and it's centralized and it's one company behind it it's actually actively working to launder money and prevent information identity escaping from it whereas bitcoin everything is publicly recorded. right and because it does have a bit of
4:10 pm
a reputation for facilitating illicit behavior however one misconception is that because it is totally anonymous and they take take down the silk road which was the web site where illegal drugs are being bought and sold for because it showed that because it actually provides very poor anonyma nitty and so what do you think that going to is a good place for criminals to flock to if they want to remain totally anonymous. i mean we want to see how it plays out but so far it sure doesn't look like it when you compare the use of the coin in criminal activity compared to cash it seems like a poor choice with the silk road loss didn't just end there they've been able to trace it to to other dealers and other suppliers and other people to move the money whereas in a conventional drug ring it's probably just what it ended with a warehouse full of cash now from two thousand a level into two thousand and thirteen silk road accounted for only about four percent of all coin transactions and as we mentioned before because it is completely dwarfed by the banking system it is easy enough to turn big one into
4:11 pm
cash for this to be used for any serious serious criminal activity i mean at this point definitely not it's it's hard enough to turn that going into cash you know for legitimate purposes you know and then if you're trying to hide your id it would be even more difficult i think what you're going to see is you can see a lot of lot of the focus from the governments is going to be on ensuring proper k.y. see no your customer rules don't need verification anti money laundering procedures and the banks are going to notice because transactions more than they would it took the whole transaction so i think it's actually going to be more difficult to use this for criminal activity in the future now on the other hand a topic that was brought up in the hearings in new york this week is that if they coined does catch on and become big enough that national commerce and infrastructure are dependent on it governments might see the benefits of getting into bitcoin mining what advantages could the u.s. government gain by entering this space. i mean there's definitely
4:12 pm
a first mover advantage and you know the question isn't whether or not you know bitcoin is going to see the question is which virtual currency which digital currency is going to take off is going to be ripple is going to point is going to be like when there is going to be something that we haven't even heard of yet and i'm sure the governments are looking at it closely now and they definitely if it does pose a threat to the reserve currency then it is not even a question i mean of course they should be getting behind it and china and russia have recently come out as being very hostile towards that coin so it doesn't look like either of these countries will get into bitcoin anytime soon what is the u.s. government being wise to get into bitcoin now it's again a strategic opportunity to dominate this space oh for sure for sure and i mean obviously they're already looking at it i mean we're having hearings on it you know the government the senate how to hearing a couple months ago that was really positive committees are being formed no they're definitely taking a look at it and i think russia is a really interesting case because you know you say russia is against it but russia
4:13 pm
is actually pretty split the russian central bank came out and said that it's illegal under under russian banking laws and then german graphed who is the c.e.o.'s for a bank which is russia's largest bank and a two time economic minister under vladimir putin he came out strongly supporting it and he said that this is you know a paradigm shift in currency issuance and that we need to not stifle innovation so i would say russia is definitely split on this matter it's not that cut and dry thank you jared that was jared ten founder of money in tax dot com colorado law makers rejected a voluntary measure on thursday to give food producers the option of labeling products that do not include genetically modified ingredients one of the biggest issues a lawmaker said an emblem ending this would be that the state would then have to set up possible fines or other penalties for retailers that mislabeled. on the country have taken action or tried to take action to require labels for genetically
4:14 pm
modified food however the food and drug administration already allows for voluntary labeling for those of you who are thinking g.m.o. don't have to be labeled o. m.g. if it is bad to help answer that question we're joined her lior by elizabeth you finished the she's the executive producer of g m a o m g a new documentary highlighting the very issues i first asked her. what message the film is trying to convey. the films i see a very very beautiful film that follows the journey of a father who of three children and it's really his exploration of the food supply and we want to raise awareness of the fact that g.m.o. does exist and what they are and how they are produced and the questions that surround them and give people the opportunity to make their own conclusions now there's been many states most recently in colorado who've been struggling with legislation for labeling it g.m.o. foods and very few have been successful in this and for why is it so difficult to get g.m.o. labeling on our food well there's
4:15 pm
a big big companies and organizations like the grocery manufacturers association that are really pushing back to try to keep consumers in the dark and you know while there is questions around g.m.o. foods and things we as consumers we didn't have the right to know what we're eating and that's what i personally advocate now labeling should that be a state or federal issue well that is a state by state the movement is really building we had more than twenty six states last year to put in legislation and try to push for this and that is really causing a national conversation to develop and it's coming to washington d.c. so you know one really balances the other for you know ease of use in the full knowledge of food companies and you know supermarkets and things having federal legislation is obesity what is necessary so the entire state of the union now in general mills is looking to take this labeling as she went to its own hands and they've announced that they're going to remove bioengineered and greediness from cheerio as and then label them as g.m.o.
4:16 pm
free however as the wall street journal pointed out essentially all over right even now planted commercially have been genetically modified in some way now because the decades of cross breeding and genetic manipulation is it even possible to find food that's truly on g m a ok there's a difference between breeding and hybridizing a stage to actually manipulating in a laboratory and so yes it. it is absolutely. possible for people to find foods that non g.m.o. of course know for thousands of years people have been evolving plan for ideas in a certain way of you know cross-pollination and things but with regards to genetic engineering that's just something that's been happening over recent decades and that really is the questionable science that we would like to see really labeled and many more but where do you draw the line on labeling well the labeling would be on the actual manipulated product so that which is taking the genome and really
4:17 pm
manipulating it in a full some barmen and there's not much research available on the health effects of this frankenfood if you will one why hasn't there been a comprehensive study done and to what do we know about the safety of eating g.m.o. so the area around the labeling of foods if something is proven to be unsafe then it should be taken off the market labeling with just literally a right to know issue you have the rights and we really need to make sure that the regulators do call for them to to do those studies into some of the effects of these things but i think that labeling really is a first step to make sure that we know as consumers what we are eating and then moving forward of course you know my husband since the nine hundred ninety s. introduced legislation in congress calling full of more review of this technology looking at the safety aspects of it by say environmental and health wise but we still to see that actually coming into existence and now is one issue that the film
4:18 pm
dies talk about is the effects of the g.m.o. seed dealers what they're having on small farming business they compared it to wal-mart on mom and pop store so what is what are these big our culture companies what effect are they having on independent farmers so you know the seed patenting is really an issue to be looked at cross pollination is. you know farmers who have grown conventionally organic finding that their fields are actually contaminated with a genetically modified gene that's coming from another pharma sealed they are under threat because in a company such as one sent to a coming in and and claiming rights to to those seeds we need to make sure that our seeds elfman to use that the tea to grow their their own crops and to be safe from the pollution of other crops coming in and the cross contamination that now u.s.d.a.
4:19 pm
i propose they purport something which is. really that that these things can live side by side that you can have conventional gannett on one field and you can have a genetically modified crops on the other but we need to make sure that people really understand that we live in a biosphere that's interconnected and what happens in one field doesn't it does actually through pollen drift and also if you're spraying herbicides all pesticides on to one crop then he can actually blow your own to somebody else's so we need to make sure that farmers are protected from those kinds of events i think you know this is a little bit consented she's the executive producer of g.m.o. i.m.g. sense of freedom and history of chemical spill and to west virginia's water supply new estimation has come forward suggesting that the still is much bigger than first reported and dangerous chemicals including formaldehyde are now being found in the or for on this we turn to our chief correspondent megan lopez. first west virginia residents were told that their water was unsafe to drink now one expert warns that
4:20 pm
the air in charleston could also be toxic take a deep breath because this one is a doozy west virginia environmental quality board member scott simon testified in front of west virginia's joint legislative oversight commission on state water resources that he conducted tests and found trace amounts of cancer causing for the hide in the air simonton believes this talks the air is linked to the spill of thousands of gallons of for meth the cycle hexane methanol into the elk river earlier this month state officials have blasted the testimony the west virginia american water company called simon tens of opinion misleading and irresponsible the west virginia department of health and human resources put out a statement saying quote scott simon turns presentation to the west virginia joint legislative committee today is totally unfounded and does not speak to the health and safety of west virginians they also argue that familial height is only created
4:21 pm
under extremely high temperatures but simonton is not the only expert speaking out richard denison a toxicologist at the environmental defense fund said he thought the center for disease control might have called the all clear too early given the fact that the only research ever done on this chemicals health effects were tests on lab rats done back in one nine hundred ninety he also pointed out that only adult rats were exposed to the chemical so it is hard to determine the effects on children now to be fair the c.d.c. never used the word safe to describe the water when it gave the all clear instead they said they would quote not expect any adverse health effects below one part per million meanwhile we are also learning that the amount of c h m spilled into the elk river is bigger than originally estimated it now stands at ten thousand gallons also a second chemical was leaking into the elk river that's known as p h h what's. more of the huffington post reports that freedom industries knew about the second
4:22 pm
chemical leak for weeks but did not disclose the details about it to the state or federal regulators because it's considered a trade secret that could hurt the company's bottom line financially if the information is disclosed freedom industries filed for chapter eleven bankruptcy it right after the spill essentially stopping all west virginia residents and businesses from seeking legal action against the company but as m.s.m. he sees chris has pointed out in order to file for bankruptcy freedom industries has to find another company to finance it not one but two companies stepped up to the plate money or funding l.l.c. and w. funding however it turns out that mouneer funding l.l.c. was also incorporated the same day that it offered to save freedom industries and guess what the company's officer is one j. clifford forrest the very man who bought freedom industries at the end of last year as for the funding that company is organized by the lawyer who also organized
4:23 pm
mountaineer funding l.l.c. and the sole listed number of that company is you guessed it now in your funding l.l.c. critics are now calling this colucci in freedom industries now needs to disclose its financial situation and come up with a reorganization plan however that plan could take months or even years to be put into effect so it looks as if the battle for west virginia's water supply isn't over yet in washington meghan lopez r.t. in an attempt to reorganize the company cnn's president jeff zucker has given pink slips to forty senior journalist see him as currently at a twenty year low in terms of viewers and will be rolling out a slew of new content including more reality t.v. shows original series and documentaries a former c.n.n. employee thinks the network should turn to cartoons. best show on cable sponge bob you ever watch it i all the time rachael it is
4:24 pm
a great year so hip i mean it's the kids love it but it's also sponge bob put sponge bob on c.n.n. put twenty four hours until the big story bridge now we break in a sponge bob and go to the hurricane that's what. you control your waves. and here to help us determine whether a sponge wearing pants is the feature of c.n.n. and to help us sort through other recent media mishaps is our t.v. producer. and comedian and author camp thanks for joining us guys thanks period what a c n n doing around here well if you love documentaries things essential that used to be on v h ones behind the music then you were going to love the new c.n.n. just kind of charting through all of the things that have happened to justin bieber over the past couple of weeks if you want to learn more about the relationship between amy poehler and tina fey don't go to turn right to c.n.n.'s own point of doing everything wrong it's just it's whatever gets ratings doris' and celebrity
4:25 pm
crap so you know every every day we do it on it's being afraid of being frightened that every commercial will be very be turned on this in every commercial it's do you have exactly. yeah now i do because you just scared the hell out of it like did you know it's whatever gets ratings it's all over this is reality t.v. going to fix this problem i was a little room for it was probably i think if they want to make is a bore and they should take they should just show reality t.v. because everybody's watching it anyway and then put the news subliminal truth just underneath you would even have to know you're learning you're just watch and it's road complicated could go off and then underneath would be like oh yeah exxon mobil and your government and then people would know. and you want to know what's news and what's commentary about for me because you know. i think that if c.n.n. was turning to reality television shows they might not be as well off as if they played something like sponge bob where you would then get the kids watching you have more merchandising opportunities i don't i don't see why they don't turn didn't like the anderson cooper. i would buy that anderson cooper bobblehead doll
4:26 pm
it could like follow me in the car something bad anderson would be nodding i mean there are a lot of i think new revenue streams that c.n.n. could look into that they have not sounds more entertaining the d.c. housewives is that even possible now turning to other networks at fox according to a public policy polling fox was voted the most trusted media above p.b.s. and a.b.c. however in the same poll fox was also voted the least trusted in media. what on earth does this mean that they're very very polarizing and to me what this says is they do a great job at what they're doing which is getting people's attention because whether you think they're trustworthy or whether you think they're just blowing garbage in your face people keep turning back to figure out what are people going to say on this channel next i think it just means that americans have no idea what's going on right this crap tass dick infotainment that sprayed at them they don't know anything i mean there was another study that came out a couple years ago saying people that only watch fox news know less about what's
4:27 pm
happening in the world than people who watch no news at all which is mind boggling because no one would keep want to get sports channel that made them dumber about sports you know is walking around like you. know i don't even watch sports but i'm pretty sure one of those is a basketball team and the others are tied or. there's nobody there to go and i was going to turn to comedy i think and comedy convenience as i was and as a comedian i think we should turn everything to comedy and everything funny. get at the real truth i think that comedy as a way of getting your truths in a way that sometimes just kind of straightforward you can't get at so we shall see joining us. thanks for joining. that does it for now or for more on the stories we covered go to youtube dot com forward slash r.t. america and check out our website at r.t. dot com for us say you can also follow me on twitter at perry and d c stay tuned
