it's only a matter of hours before the official start of the twenty fourteen winter games anticipation is growing but the intrigue surrounding the opening ceremony causing to the excitement plan. he says the competition is just about ice and snow now that all the athletes have gathered here in sochi will be giving out the fashion gongs at the winter olympics from the weird and wonderful costumes to the overly bright and just downright bizarre. and also in the knees day embarrassed u.s. diplomats try to love for an apparently haptics place the phone chat about how they could tailor the next ukrainian government.
5:01 am
and a very well welcome to the olympic team to national with me. thanks for joining us and less than twenty four hours left before the flame of the winter games as late at the olympic stadium in salt some of the competitions have already kicked old but the world is holding its breath for the official opening ceremony that organizers promise will be mind blowing aussies postcard isn't that the capital for. it's been seventy s since so she was awarded the winter olympics and in a few hours time we're going to see the culmination the climax of all that hard work and all that planning the opening ceremony gets underway at eight fourteen pm local time in the fish stadium that you can probably make out behind me and i was fortunate enough to get a ticket for the final dress rehearsal on choose david and i can tell you that the forty thousand plus spectators who are going to be inside the stadium are going to
5:02 am
be treated to a high tech pyrotechnic display a condensed journey through russian history and although the ending ceremony hasn't begun in the olympic cauldron we still don't know the identity of the person tossed with that despite those things the sport has started the events began on thursday and the continuing to run throughout friday and also has spoken to a couple of athletes who have tested their venues ahead of their events and they say that sochi is ready to welcome the school to. first impressions having good we've been riding every day. like states we don't have this much success. so basically. right off the. writing the signs that everything. so yeah. i think the russians are very enthusiastic about sport and about the olympics so i expect them to play great hosts of the world and so far what i've seen has been
5:03 am
very impressive and i can't wait to get down to the venues and see the called again well tonight's opening ceremony will also see the climax of the journey for the olympic torch it's on its record breaking sixty five thousand kilometer journey around the world's largest country it's in the final stages of that journey of course has been to the bottom of the world's deepest lake lake by kalas going to the top of the highest peak in europe mt elbrus and has even been into outer space on the north pole and in the last twenty four hours it's been carried by a number of high profile figures as well include. russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov he's taken time out of his busy show jill to pick up the baton as has u.n. secretary general ban ki moon who was here for tonight's opening ceremony and organizers say that for the olympic torch relay it is almost a case of mission accomplished it's of course the longest and biggest torch relay in time and history so it's been a huge logistical effort to to make this happen in the russia in the winter time
5:04 am
but it's been a fantastic journey and i mean every dream we endure going to school we had before we started has really come through so it's it's been an amazing journey really showing the first verse of everybody over the next few hours the olympic torch is going to snake its way through such a before arriving here in the fish stadium for the opening ceremony and atmosphere is building because the such the twenty fourteen winter olympics are now just hours away. and of course have got a team of correspondents working all the venues across the olympic city of sochi no doubt about that and paul scott we're just heard from him he is that right here actually this is the olympic class that what the olympic park is and where the opening ceremony well take place this evening athletes and five kinds of sport will be competing right here at this place and the rest will happen up in the mountains and despite looking fire up this class is just hard for now right away and aussies andrew farmer is there for us right now. russia won the right to host these
5:05 am
olympics there wasn't even a paved road leading to the roser hutto never mind a telly cabin but now look at it it is a fully fledged european style ski village there are hotel chains here is what is restaurants and cafes and is even a nightclub around the corner but this place is in it for the long haul because long after the olympics have packed up and gone home it's hoped that many thousands of tourists will come here the decades to come to something like sixty kilometers worth of ski runs and three ski areas around this place and that is set to be expanded so this little tour even though it's been short does show that there's much more to these olympics than just sporting venues it's all about the overhaul and the entire regeneration of a region. before the medal count began as let's now take a look at some basic numbers determining these games so these are the twenty second winter olympics definitely a record breaking no doubt almost three thousand athletes from the largest ever
5:06 am
number of countries eighty eight countries will compete in sochi in a record number of sporting about and there are nine to a sporting event there so that's twelve competitions more than in vancouver four years ago and another record has broken is the cost and these are the most expensive winter games in history but these olympics are not just about sportsmanship and counting medals of course there's one more competition under supplied no awards it's still going to catch you as our eyes talk designers worldwide have put all their efforts into making the teams the gold standard of the function and also as much i'm sure is look at the results. course all the eyes will be on the procession tonight at the opening ceremony and indeed what people are wearing other uniforms are they costumes all of a political statement so let's give you a wrap of what you can expect tonight let's go straight to the german team they'll set the stand out from the crowd we have them design by blocking out that total
5:07 am
coats in what could be described as a rainbow childish garish effect with that bright colors of pink yellow blue green a few people have said that it's a nod towards the anti gay attitude and subjects running the controversy of the games but personally i think it's just a throwback to the cab as a my little pony so that's the german team for you expect them to be there tonight said the selling out in the procession let's move on to my opinion and what i think are the most stylish and chic uniforms that will be showing tonight they are of course america some say new york is the fashion capital of the world and the costumes uniforms are designed by ralph lauren they were unveiled last year and of course they are here in the pico says that coat with slim sweatpants with a floppy hats with a star design in the colors red white and blue so personal thumbs up to the american team now let's go from something quite acceptable to the weird and
5:08 am
wonderful let's take a look at the scandinavian country of norway and the curling team in the zigzag efforts of what you can see now in the colors also in red white and blue they wanted to feel at ease on the ice with what they're wearing and they certainly will be wearing those outfits so fingers crossed that costume will work for them because personally i would not want to wear that outfit moving on to a great guy he's been in the papers and coming by lots of the media it's the mexican ski championship herbert's von holzen who and he's actually just one eighth mexican he's actually descendants of german royalty people say he's a prince. other people don't he'll be wearing the lair o. outfits and you certainly won't miss him in his truck folds ruffled succeeded with his red tie and come a band that's prince hubertus von holding her moving on to the russian bombshell that is arena recently she posed for
5:09 am
a glossy magazine wearing just lingerie with curling stone she's got lots of tongues wagging lots of people are looking forward to seeing her tonight of course she isn't just a pretty face but she is a celebrity here and russian of course tonight will also be seeing other teams from around the world including great britain and the rest of the russian team so while three billion people might be watching the opening ceremony for the famous torch pairing other people will see it as a fashion and somewhat political statement regarding what people are wearing let's look forward to an excitement here is just incredible stay with us as we begin our special coverage of the games from our limbic studio insult. to g. twenty fourteen promises we call to make an exhilarating winter in our team. to join us in our way and make seven zero and the rest of our local news team for sochi twenty four take. on our team

a week phone call washington's behind the scene casting for ukraine's next leader has caused red faces at the state department especially after the conversation appeared to talk up a special role for the. so that would be great i think to help glue this thing and have the u.n. help glue it and you know the e.u. an apparent conversation with ambassador in kiev the u.s.'s top diplomat for europe victoria nuland outlined a fail safe scheme to forge a new government and here's our new york correspondent with more than week. well what you hear during this four minute conversation is basically two top u.s. officials strategizing about how to form ukraine's new government it sounds like they're playing a game of chess with the opposition leaders as the pieces on that chess board they're trying to determine which opposition leader has the best economic and governing experience to work inside ukraine's new government and which opposition
5:11 am
leaders should remain on the outside it's a bit shocking to actually hear i had to listen to it a few times to really grasp the fact that there are strategizing on how to put together the government of another country instead of paraphrasing everything let's let our viewers actually take a listen for themselves. the piece was obviously that complicated electronics you're. going to miss deputy prime minister and you've seen some of our notes on the troubles in the marriage right now so we're trying to get her read really fast and work here on this stuff i'm glad you sort of put it on the spot on where he fits in the scenario so i don't think leetch should go into the government i don't think it's necessary i don't think it's a good idea in terms of her not going to the government just let him sort of stay out in doofus tradable homework and stuff i think he is the guy who's got the economic experience the governing experience he's the he's the guy you know what he

needs his cleats in tiny book on the outside he needs to be talking to them four times a week well clearly this is a highly embarrassing situation for the united states particularly because we've been here u.s. officials insist for so long that they're not involving themselves in into ukraine's internal circumstance. for for the spokesperson for the for the u.s. state department she had a pretty difficult day on thursday jen psaki was put in the hot seat journalist one after another reporters kept asking her why u.s. officials are interfering in ukraine's internal problems out one point corresponded said point blank that the leaked conversation shows the us is attempting to construct a new government in a sovereign country and actually bring officials in from the u.n. to seal the deal one thing u.s. officials had not spin their way out of it is the profanity and dismissive tone victoria nuland used when referring to the european union and its involvement in

ukraine for that an apology was issued she's been in close contact with a representative ashton also let me convey that she has been in contact with the e.u. counterparts and and of course has apologized but. for these reported comments of course you're not good for me to cut your shoes i'm just not going to speak to a private diplomatic conversation but i'm obviously speaking to the content of the reports. misaki also tried to make somewhat of a joke when she was in damage control mode when she was referring to the use of profanity when it came to victoria nuland the assistant secretary of state let's take a listen you may know the story of how she lived on the russian boat for about eight months when she was twenty three in she learned how to perfect perhaps certain words in a couple of languages so perhaps it speaks to that more than
5:14 am
a pervasive viewpoint you know suggesting that she is a predisposition against russian no i was suggesting that she learned russian curse words and curse words on the disease is amazing. i was making and learning the first words on a fishing boat there you see a us folks person trying to make a joke out of a situation that is quite scandalous quite embarrassing not sure if any. official in ukraine are laughing at this moment after their hearing this leaked conversation on you tube about you know the united states strategizing on how to build a new government in a sovereign country. on foreign policy expert and he points out to the u.s. may be trying to divert public attention away from its book of political trades. we have a situation where a high ranking official of the u.s. government who's even been to kiev an issue you know what was distributing cookies to the demonstrators back when they were still relatively peaceful is referring to
5:15 am
these guys as you know glitz yat see in tiny book i would i would seriously be upset i would i would consider this an insult she's apologized for commented she's not admitting she me which is itself a confirmation that the comment was with me but will she hasn't apologized for is the plans to midwife a new government in ukraine in other words she's she's apologizing for cussing out the e.u. but she's not apologizing for trying to overthrow a government in kiev and calling that popular democracy obviously there's more to it than that i don't think anybody in the u.s. establishment to sorry for what they're trying to do i think they're very proud of it and i think they're going to pursue it. and if you want more our web site has got all the links to the league itself as well as the reaction of the state department it's all that be at odds he got a call. and also online an ugly moment he had an athlete for released its list of the world's more humans that they broadcast i found space to call an important

agencies bad laws created the situation it's only better laws are going to remove that pressure that's going to that's going to affect the way say a policy level we don't think dragnet spying i.e. collecting a massive haystack and then trying to find a little needles in is the way to go so one of the things that you find out when he talked a lot to young people as i do is that they they simply don't trust that stuff they put up now that it's supposed to be for just x. y. and close friends won't wake up one day now everyone seeing it right you know they don't they want to if they want a service center where i lived earlier wherever i go to you see about as i want to go to michigan and i want to go but i gotta tell you something about is going to go ahead and get a jump in blogger so i want to get through i want to remind everyone that facebook being a private company doesn't mean that they have necessarily have the public interest and good i mean there was a quote from mark zuckerberg that came out several years ago. he said there is users worse quote f. ing idiots for giving the older data. to.

at the tender age of ten facebook has by any estimation truly changed the world facebook also has demonstrated that it can be used as a weapon for political change and the social network play showed itself to be a smart investment on the downside of their transparency issues and whether they can survive another decade. how would creating a sustainable operation focused on profit making be different from what you are advocating my term self-interest sense of that is what your government says has always been the case and. just businesses for hundreds of years without using the label. i think was what got capitalism do it. was this notion that economists brought to it which was the idea of profit maximizing.

the some syllabi safe we'll have security assessments from russia's ambassador to the u.s. and a high ranking congressman just back from russia all next on politicking. of the politicking on larry king and we start the show talking about immigration joining us here in the studios my friend the acclaimed actor producer director social activist edward james olmos big story in tuesday's washington post new momentum in tongues for a broad overhaul of border control laws demanding that president obama hauled deportation of millions of american young people the white house has consistently said that obama cannot illegally expand the effort what do you think of all this.
5:28 am
well. doug meier it's impossible to move forward. this has become a political issue to gain votes on both sides and i got to tell you this is really what the issue becomes whenever humanity is placed behind politics we have a big issue and the issue is that a lot of children a lot of families who have come here for years been here for decades are getting separated more than ever in the history of this country under any president we're getting shipped they're sending people back now that should make a lot of people happy and i'm sure a lot of people to watch your n.s.a. and that's good that's good they should have been here the problem is none of us should have been here if that's the case we all immigrated here if you all come on eddie don't start that when do you stop that when you tell the native american indians excuse us for taking over the entire situation here never no that's old

news we're talking about today you want amnesty for all i would like to see something done immediately the humanistic aspect of what we're talking about. the separation of families the inconsistency why are they coming here larry out of a need to fight coming here to get rich the coming here to survive you have water on one side and you have no water over here they're going to go where the water is and that's the simple direct are you saying the obama administration is not an advocate of of ending all this stupidity as you call it on the immigration issue you think obama's been bad on your side. my side is not side it's humanistic how do you assess obama assess him as being someone that has spoken very clearly on issues that are good for him and his party and i got to say the democrats are very pro your side well they're prone respects of trying to make things happen but guess
5:30 am
what they haven't been able to and the reason is because of the separation of the different parties in this country why are you blaming obama because under his watch if the buck stops with him under his watch more people have been deported now than they've ever been deported in the history of this country but he's advocating reform he wasn't specific but he's advocating reform of the whole immigration situation well is he strong enough to make it go through when he won easily is what do you want him to do honestly logically honestly he would have to sit down with everybody on both sides and work this thing through no one point the senate had a bill that they pushed through an idea and of course it was stopped in the house and now we've also had a situation where today there's a bill that's coming out that has come out on behalf of the house i think and they're turning around and saying that we should do it in the way but it's not comprehensive and in any sense of the word those who buy build yes.
