best way to the heart of moscow. celebrations and high hopes in sochi as russia clinches to win the gold and silver in the pairs figure skating down the stars of world hockey prepare to face off plus some media outlets here have quite hard to make the lympics in russia smell like cold war. and a look out why the games have become the target of what some are calling a smear campaign by foreign media. and terror units are on high alert in greece after a radical and a capitalist group admits to opening fire on the german ambassador's residence and calls for a violent uprising against europe's financial elite. on

the m a mosque you're watching on t.v. national we were in a josh now another big day in sochi where our team is continuing its special coverage of the winter olympics let's cross live now tunis now who is in our studio and the how city. hello from sochi russian fans here are in high spirits after a spectacular victory yesterday in pair figure skating host nation one both gold and silver the first time that's happened in over a half century today though speed skating and bias along are some of the big highlights along with men's figure skating with you again you pierce and aiming for victory as artie's andrew farmer explains there's another contest that could top all of those for russia. but i have to say he was a fantastic because he was in it for a try and pull from bush's job but if there is one gold medal that russia wants to
4:02 am
win more than any other it is in the men's only hope they haven't done that since the fall of the soviet union and today they. can't against a vignette and that is a game on paper you would think they would win because they have something like sixteen and h l stars compared to c.v. news one they also have home with vantage although some are arguing that could bring extra pressure will they rushes main man alexandrovitch and says all the players have the experience they need to. i'm pretty sure we have experience and we all do our guys to handle the pressure. and i'm pretty sure it's going to be flying soon as we're going to step on the ice we're going to. think about the game and i think about how to win the game not about. the pressure and stuff and the players do seem to be relaxed maybe take a look at the. twitter feed at the moment you will see supposed to be pictures of his famous pieces but it is time walking around in and around the limping part and
4:03 am
meeting fans but it's a game they can't take lightly that is the message from soviet legend like this that threat yeah he's a man he should know he's won three gold medals. that we're expecting a good game what is really important now is the work of the coaches they need to have the team motivated there are various other factors at play the biggest is the word home it's a major responsibility players are experiencing great pressure and on top of that we haven't been champions for a long time i think it's going to be one of the most exciting tournament's of recent times. well just to give you a taste of what this means to russia we managed to catch up with the thief and. we're definitely supporting the russian ice hockey team and we hope to make it to the match like to wish our guys luck in victory in every match we hope that will take first place at our home olympics. is the best and will destroy everybody our team will definitely win a limpid gold i was born in russia so who else would i root for while also in the
4:04 am
usa they play here today and then the big one is the usa against russia on saturday definitely one to look forward to. now if team does win gold in the ice hockey that could make up for losses in some other disciplines as the country hasn't won an olympic hockey final in more than twenty years but for now let's turn from the arena to the founts artie's martin andrews has been among spectators in sochi and shared his impressions with me here in our sochi studio. we've got behind this the olympic flame you can see but it's not just the flame that's on fire the whole olympic park is on fire it's like being in the carnival in rio it was just incredible even i was surprised the volunteers they're doing limbo and the big flags they're all screaming shouting. everybody all the volunteers speak english we've got back in the stands we've got russian dancing we've got stages with. it all singing traditional russian songs of course this is from of the various
4:05 am
countries around the world you know cherishing and loving listening to traditional worship music and dancing and it's all brightly colored brilliant and so if you can if you don't have tickets to a specific event but you go into the park there's plenty to do. but you need tickets for an event you can go into the park just as a spectator and so what are some of the things that you've seen here well like i said you've got bounced around with traditional singing is it's not just traditional songs are you've got you've got d.j.'s powers of the mountains lots of light snow there with that quite like the d.j. was a big part of the overall ceremony as well is this modern of course you got to realize that snowboarding which is a relatively new it's been actually for the last two or fifteen sixteen year olds winning golds up there but you've got to realise that it's the olympics for the new generations and with that so you've really got to cater. for you you know the musical side of it so you do have like d.j. is playing in the deejays and from all around the world i think it's phenomenal
4:06 am
let's talk a little bit more about the serious side of the olympics security it's a big thing how has russia managed to have it be secure but not has anybody said the security has been faultless but what about the people at the spectators are there waiting in lines there they are there and sometimes every single train you go through every single cable car every single event you have to go through security it's just like going through ports of j.f.k. or heathrow but it's quicker there's no queues i think i waited more than thirty seconds of each one and that's really case of for the fact that you've got you've got lots of people here the crowd control is and every single person i've spoken to from america u.k. germany whatever have said that the security issues are hand out to ten three people feel safe here and the main thing is that even though it's obviously apparent it's very relaxed so in that ports are people around the world get what you specially of the job i have you feel comfortable you feel violated almost but really here in sochi they're doing
4:07 am
a superb job well the lively atmosphere and groundbreaking achievements in sochi are gradually winning over some of the doubters nevertheless some prefer to focus on the negative party's going to cannes looks at where the media criticism of the olympics is coming from. you know some media outlets here have tried so hard to make lympics in russia smell like cold war in their coverage some didn't even bother to come up with new tools new graphics same old bear this cover is from one thousand nine hundred eighty when the us boycotted the summer games in the soviet union of course there were calls to boycott the sochi olympics as well similar images this is the handcuffs and all barbed wire not new as you can see andrew craig who wrote several books about news coverage in america is here with me to chat about all this sea of negativity thank you so much for coming. craig you know russia has come a long way since one thousand eight hundred and some very different country now but
4:08 am
it seems some of these outlets one their readers want their audience to see what russia as if it's still nine hundred eighty. well these are very familiar themes both to the public but also to the owners and many of the old time reporters so people fall into a comfortable pattern that actually extends back many decades and is quite apparent if you look for it as you've done and. it's quite clear that people took the old magazine covers and said let's just updated for this olympics stereotypes are strong. exactly and you know they call it the news industry but in many ways people like the old industry but the old themes but call it news but sometimes you know in the middle of this sea of negativity you sometimes see reports like the one i saw in the new republic the officer went to
4:09 am
a popular gay bar in sochi and writes about how desperate for injury and they start trying to find traces of gay persecution there and they can't those they talk to say no one is bothering them except germany's part of the issue is when people self censor or they believe they know what the story is before they go to the scene and what you're describing sounds like a classic case that happens all over the place where reporters think they know what the story is and all are trying to do is find someone to attach a name and a face to the story that's almost written in the reporter or editors have. to create thank you thank you you know even rushed. who are critical of the government found this old school smear campaign upsetting but for most it's like in
4:10 am
the old russian saying there is bark but the caravan moves on so let them bark enjoy the game so i'm going to check on in washington our team. that's right the negative coverage hasn't faced athletes or spectators here on the russian black sea coast that does it for us here in sochi for this hour but artie's olympic coverage continues in moscow back to you. thanks very much any super this and well as we've just heard there has been some less than objective media coverage of the games however on social media the negativity that we saw in the run up to the olympics does seem to be dying down and here with me to talk about this is our news editor and social media commentator on across the hour thank you for joining us well really been following social media before the game started and after the launch let's take a look at how things changed sure yeah absolutely as you can see we've we've brought the weather with us again you can see the clouds hovering over the united
4:11 am
states and the northwestern europe look this is this is basically an indication of how intensively people are tweeting about sochi twenty fourteen that's a search from from trends about base around the sochi twenty four times the lining of the cloud i brought this up to give you an idea now if we could if we could load the sochi problems map now this is give you an idea of how intensely people are tweeting around the sochi problems issue yeah so it's much it's much smaller and we could we could basically show got by having a look at the behavior on twitter over the last week or so that the meme itself kind of lived a glorious but short life and it's dying out if we can have a look at some of these dots guys please you know probably because people are all concentrating on what's happening on the sporting venues and arenas there but let's take a look anyway sure yeah let's go to the story. ok we do we run a sample of about ten million tweets a trans my brother sample for us i should say and as you can see and we'll show
4:12 am
that basically the cities that are tweeting most heavily around social problems are also those that tweet most everyone so if you're twenty five watching the numbers they are here's our no is yeah so g twenty fourteen is running twenty four percent globally social problems is running at three percent globally there or thereabouts and in between again we've got pretty much dedicated dedicated olympic olympic we can run that on guys thanks all right let's it was happening next we've chosen to give you a quick idea of our. it's incredible isn't it how high these numbers are but let's now take a look at what is going to interest me because it's we're calling it the twin to really see you know because of the amount of things going on in vancouver for example you can see canadians are very passionate about their sports problems occupies a reason below rank in the in the hostile hierarchy canadians very much into following the team london. you'll see the problems again it's one place but it gets really three percent so if you twenty fourteen things when you get almost thirty
4:13 am
percent which is quite i go back to the us we chose washington quite randomly and as you can see again social problems it's likely higher running at about five percent there or thereabouts. twenty fourteen going to twenty five so it's a job well that is a factor here you know job job to be changes things quite some points likely but i think you look there's a look anybody would say there's a large level of homogeneity about the kind of hashtag that's going on but if we have a look at the actual tweets themselves and how they could what people are saying to be interesting now that we can we can see that the meme itself is taking on a life of its own people complain about not being able to get to bed they've got to watch people believe and look now really really hard at what's happening problems how you know what do you take the life of it's own social media you know if you look most anybody can do about that you know some of that locker room for twelve minutes is terrible now there are people making a point about it saying the meme itself you know conveys a certain cultural are going to you know conveys a certain snobbery towards russia we can go ahead and i started. again there's a discussion around some articles that were based on what people are calling the
4:14 am
backlash against the backlash and if you hold this up here so if you problems as well as you know you know this is this is one of the biggest what with the exception of the world cup the biggest biggest sporting event of the year and certainly on presented levels of attention on social media but you can people are picking up on everything so if anybody can have a quick look there and spot the spot the mistake in the fly you can see the dutch and the. you know american flags today employees are a mix up there that becomes a problem you know it's not necessarily to do it's not yeah we're going to get on that on guys there isn't and yeah increases the number sure sure we couldn't run out on a.b.c. was told to go in there drunk then there's a totally random guy because there's a bunch of screws might ask just what you got away to to daily live of people in their daily lives really doesn't want to do anything to the sort of people like the way people like you now this one is interesting is a correspondent from the vienna's item. who posted this picture of a less than perfect building and suggested to the world and i things weren't as
4:15 am
they should be in the social media site on which we've heard great reports about by the way but any have. posted this it's immediately picked up our producer at c.n.n. who wants to use it on all platform and media permanently to describe the social media center but the only problem is that the photograph was taken of a building in vienna area so things are not always what they say alright well ira thank you so much for breaking down the numbers for us in explaining how things work in the social media that was our across talking to me and we'll continue our special coverage of the games bringing you all the latest from beyond the capitol next hour so do stay with us for that and more. g. twenty fourteen promises the ultimate in the exhilarating winter. storm and it's now a make have an update on the bus to take these teams to sochi twenty four take. all the. popular anger in greece torn by political and financial turmoil is reaching
4:16 am
alarming levels a radical anti-capitalist movement has published a matter faster blaming germany for the dire state of the greek economy and threatening to launch attacks on the country's companies and politicians the popular fighter's group has admitted to firing shots of the german ambassador as residence in december last year. has details. police and security forces are on high alert here in the great capital with riot police patrolling the streets in groups of five or six officers and that's after the evidence was discovered of the dangerous activity over medicare extremist group known here in greece as the popular father group ordered to say they claimed responsibility for december attack on german ambassador as residence here in the great capital when a group of a known gunman fired at least fifty bullets at the building no one was heard but

many isn't happy and another attack this time of the tap and in january. they had altars of reset us back in the outskirts of athens as well the group sent a twenty page manifesto to a weekly leftwing satirical magazine titled the malice in greek explained that that was their reaction their response to greece's for attractive financial crisis for which they believe germany is to blame and declared it's part of a campaign against the german capitalist machine calling on the old greeks to join their fight why germany been blamed the country is the launches dollar for greece's bailouts the country has been relying on since two thousand and ten and we each have forced greece to introduce harsh austerity measures that eventually increased dramatically unemployment here in the country risa high that many greece

could get behind this and his group calling on the residents of this country to join their fight has been covering financial crisis since the beginning and we heard many tragic stories and even this time we were able to speak to some residents of athens and i can say that's tied news and despair are among the most. when feelings here in the city and people say they're tired they no longer have power to even take to the streets to protest and moreover they no longer believe that could change anything that's how. the situation but to restrain very high of provocations and this is why we will apparently see some extra security measures here in the city and another great cities for for some time max and stacey we'll be exploring the murky waters of the financial world in a kaiser report in about ten minutes time here on r.t.

twenty eight takes to tell three hundred million people out of thing so. yes max actually the number two is china with four hundred twenty six and then the united kingdom with two hundred eighty seven and you know one of the things i think you see with think tanks is they push these myths on to the population and propaganda for their sort of schemes to essentially convince the population to indorse systems and financial systems and economic systems that are bad for them essentially so the way to look at america is with this one the king jaafari defense wealthy kills four people in drunk driving accident claiming affluenza so the nine one one call you know when this accident happened it talks about all these scattered bodies all over the place and this rich kid drove drunk and killed these four people norma.
