live pictures from kiev where knowing people have been killed among them to produce officers in the deadliest wave of violence to hit the ukrainian capital since the recent arrest. this is all too international with the twenty four hours of daylight from our studio center here in moscow which just turned eleven pm nine pm in kiev where i'm wrist has reignited in the city just a day after the government's amnesty for protest as came into force our breaking news story this iraq has clashed with police on the streets of the ukrainian

capital with reports of fatalities on both sides let's get the latest now from ortiz. so. clearly a dark day for ukraine tell us more about what is going on there well basically all we have to do in order to understand what's happening in the korean capital is to look at the pictures then they truly are mind blowing these central independence square in kiev is. up in flames right now protesters are tossing molotov cocktails at the police the police are responding with tear gas and water cannons at this point although it's it is cold out there it does look just by observing at this situation that the water cannons are sort of doing a double work at this point because the molotov cocktails do not seem to be reaching the police. as the rioters intend them to they a lot of the molotov cocktails actually dropped right there on the my don on the independence square setting the entire area on fire it's like the it's like there

is a circle of fire in the center here. we do know that. the protests have broken just hours before we were suppose of there were supposed to be according to the organizers peaceful marches towards the parliament the very quickly those us believe into a very brutal confrontation between the police and the rioters who started throwing stones and knowledge of call again the police have retaliated with rubber bullets and tear gas but the most troubling development as of now is the fact that that's according to police this is the first time where they can officially say that those on the sides of protesters have used live rounds and we do know that at least two police have died from gunshot wounds three more are reportedly in cooma right now thirty more than thirty police have been injured when it comes to protesters there saying more than one hundred people have sustained injuries in the mayhem that has been ruling the day in the ukrainian capital at the moment it's also important to
2:03 pm
note that at this point all access roads to the capital are being blocked by police starting from midnight on february nineteenth that is essentially in a couple hours time nobody will be able to enter this city because the government does not want to see reinforcement coming in for the rioters also the president of the country says he will hold an emergency meeting at eleven pm local time so that's in two hours time you know to see the situation. down but by looks of it at the moment when you see the tiresome to a blaze it does not look like that will be the case again this is the first time in recent months that we have seen such brutal clashes with live ammunition being used against protesters are also accusing the police are also using live ammunition but police are always saying that they do use live rounds. also.

weapons and. the spears gas rubber bullets and water cannons. where are the leaders of the opposition right now it's not yet clear however one of them yes a nuke has said that he is ready to sit down with the representative of the government or president in accord and carry out talks in order to stop the insanity in order to stop the violence in the center of whether or not that call will be heeded whether or not president in accords is ready to sit down with the opposition leaders not yet clear just as it's not clear whether or not all the position leaders are willing to meet with president bush so you're seeing the pictures you're seeing the mayhem and the brutality and it's quite possible that we will be seeing these very pictures for the next several hours to cross. into mr without live report thank you very much indeed bullets discuss the situation in kiev further now with our guest political analyst and examine the package from the

strategic culture. so far a tragic day for the country why is this happening now because there has been a period of calm well i think the people of the forces who are supporting the opposition really are an interest in not having an outcome that doesn't serve them and obviously their main interest is to have the present government changed and as long as this present government is in place you have the opposition which has clear support from the west you have them keep making unrest in ukraine destabilize the west is not. just that live in the middle east the west happy to support what we can see there surely extremist live elements amongst the opposition. i have to repeat what i've said before this from i think very much of the situation. in the early ninety's. we had several pieces. there were made that would have prevented
2:06 pm
the country from falling apart each time it was one of the western countries that actually sabotaged we had a peace agreement in lisp and brokered in one thousand nine hundred two in march and all three sides in the boston side. and the moslem on side backed by the u.s. . we had a war break out a couple of months later and the west was really happy to arm the side that caused the up and cold war so this is for me just a repeat of this entire situation unfortunately is the country for the part and ukraine i mean this is clearly that the worst bonnets we've seen there in the country so far is it out of control. ok the thing is i think the president needs to show that he's president of the country if there's no firm leadership right now the country is in danger of being. destabilized lastingly because as we said the western forces are just not going to give up i will not understand they
2:07 pm
could be a telephone or something interfering with all conversations through the microphone so i want you to stay here which is going to take a brief pause and we'll sort out the interference i believe the recent affairs that i would say just pause there for a moment so that's all i'll get on account of how rich and we'll see if we can rectify that sorry about the interference there. has been a certain amount of interference journey into the. i think before siege of a place officers being attacked by the protestors raises a number of questions i'm not sure whether a very full facts of where the officer was deployed to what he was deployed on. my observation would be that if it appeared to be in an ordinary sort of street patrol uniform as opposed to a public order uniform so it may well be that he was just an ordinary officer on the street. grabbed hold of for some reason but that sort of thing would be. inconsistent totally inconsistent with racial protest of any sort and it's an
2:08 pm
extremely worrying development for any close offices are being picked off if you like and taken and beaten. so we've just been hearing from a former policeman in the u.k. talking about the extreme violence which is being exacted against the police there just going back to the question about this extremist element there because we're seeing footage of people in uniform attacking the rup police and it's almost not too clear about who's attacking who and who these these real valan people are amongst the protest has. occurred in the one nine hundred ninety s. we had a legitimate government in yugoslavia we had people attacking the legitimate government we demand forces and the west then took sides with forces attacking the legitimate
2:09 pm
armed forces of the country i think the same thing is happening now i don't think in the west anyone would tolerate this sort of behavior meaning that if you had armed and uniformed people of unknown origin attacking police forces in london or brussels people would expect response in a very form response if you don't respond you have no power anymore the country falls apart. and of course the authorities have been accused of not responding harshly enough at the very beginning of these protests back in november absolutely and now we know if the authorities now expanded the way any authorities were washington and brussels in london the west and anyone western governments would say this is too forceful response we call for peace etc it's the same methodology used over and over again i think president really needs to show that he's in charge but
2:10 pm
how does he do that because he has offered concessions already to the protest is that not listening to it to any of the gestures you say he's going to be whole show but already he said these protesters have got to clear the streets by a certain time tonight they haven't done that there's still that. he has a choice you can let them stay there like he has they're just going to keep making more trouble or he can just apply the law meaning just what it says in the law and the constitution no more no less if he doesn't he can you know he has a choice of not doing anything but then he's going to lose control of the country i don't think the average cranium wants to see chaos ruling the country and i think that's a hard choice to make you think you need to pick the lesser of two evils and the lesser of two evils is to establish some sort of control and authority otherwise things are spinning out of well let's see if he is doing that now because we can cross live to. correspondent that exceed
2:11 pm
a chef ski he's i believe now in kiev and if you can hear me now we know that that deadline is now passed my guest is on the public is saying that the president now should be exerting some authority on the protestors what is the latest that your saying then now from the center of. well we just actually reached central kiev it took a few literally an hour and a half to get from the able to the city because most of the road that was dark say all of the roads leading to the central part of the city are blocked by the police and now we're just fighting the gourd on one of the police cordons. and basically separates the central part of the city from the rest of it we're trying to get inside hopefully we'll be able to do so it's mayhem behind the barricades where we're standing right now as far as we can tell from numerous reports the police have been trying to storm the independence square some some tweets accounts are reporting that it finds the storm the souls of the independence square the the site of the girl that's what has been going on for almost two months now more than two
2:12 pm
months in fact it's been taken already more than an hour but i'll be able all be able to say more in in a space of maybe peeking in minutes when i get down then on bail to see with my own eyes what's happening but we do you do have reports of the water cannons used by the police against the protesters well the protesters are using live weapons as well as multiple tails and grenades at the police so the situation is definitely boiling thoughts right now and we are waiting for the emergency meeting between the opposition and the president to see if anything comes out of it and just and just finally then the mood amongst the protests is the note of told afraid about this deadline about the authorities it it's time for him down and trying to clear the streets and they seem to be totally. totally set on carrying on with this protest and not a troll afraid and clearly very angry. well definitely as i'm reading the tweets by most of the prominent opposition figures in the protests on willing to step down moreover i just. something about. the opposition leader talking to the crowd and
2:13 pm
they based at the crowd must stay at my down at independence square urging all grown men to take whatever they have whatever whatever they can use that weapon and come over to the independence square to defend themselves over pretty much as defined as it had been able to do in our monticello despite that it seemed that they reached some sort of compromise last week. some of the protestors make a good minute sort of building which they see the earlier and yeah but now it's again it's again unpredictable it's a monkey with a great situation you never know where it's going to go around very very unpredictable and thanks very much i know that you say you're going to get close to the city center and you report back to us on what you see that in the meantime thank you very much indeed. reporting there from the center of kiev and back to you alex on the page so clearly the protests as a defiant they're not going to move from the streets the tension is clearly building even more as we speak nine deaths in the city. he is in trouble isn't it
2:14 pm
because we have seen government buildings of course being taken since the protests protests started back in november. and now the problem is the protesters aren't afraid because they don't believe that he's going to according to the law and obviously if he doesn't do anything to change that they're just going to grow bolder we may see more government buildings on fire so i think the president on the call which needs to reach out to all the ukrainians who are for the rule of law he has to make them there his allies and he's and he's called a meeting in two hours time already that was meant to be a debate about the constitution reinstating the two thousand and four constitution which actually reduces the president's palace and yet that. debate was actually stopped the opposition couldn't. for that bill as it was is that the government then being provocative here is it their fault that this is built to this question don't now. it because they're not taking from stands and i don't think they're
2:15 pm
reading the intentions of the opposition correctly because the opposition is really all that really interested in is bringing the new kitchen his government they're not interested to change constitution so much as then taking power in one way or another. that he was democratically led to the course there is going to be election early next year should he call a snap election would that not defuse the tensions now. it might in the short term setting a precedent say that each next time the street can bring down everything any future government so the stakes are high feel on the street to a change of government this time who's who's to say you can't do it the next time then what's the way out so i think really law and order. it's a less it's a lesser cost then letting things go out of control and letting the demonstrators and terrorists. that this western countries want isn't that like suggest any and
2:16 pm
european countries is saying to him that he clearly has to question his position now and that he should cool food and election but if they're all seeking for that is the opposition really mature and unified is there a proper opposition then ukraine well obviously there isn't and i think it's really disingenuous for the west to treat as a genuine and legitimate opposition by mere nazis because the new nazis are very important part of this. opposition movement toughly book all the book in his party and they've been called openly and dismayed by all the major jewish organizations in the west so that's a major part of this opposition movement the west obviously has no qualms about allying themselves with terrorists with extremists to get away so what does it say about who are doing the support in the future we had we had the ukraine two
2:17 pm
thousand and four according to the western recipes what did we have economic disaster we had. used and call we had. to push and call and they almost brought ukraine to ruin and so now the west wants a repeat of that for the ukrainian citizens well it isn't me you then going to be it's savior. oh absolutely we had some unseen and one and have a right to. that's that's that's what people in ukraine this is what started it all of course isn't it because they were saying yes we want to be part of the e.u. and obviously build on that partnership you know right it's not something new offering it's very nice words and slogans but so far the only concrete help has come from russia we haven't seen fifteen billion dollars being offered from the west so far with no strings attached. we've seen aid offered for russia almost without any conditions whatsoever except that they have a stable government they're not imposing any sort of political conditions from the
2:18 pm
west you'll get instead you'll get crushed probably a lawns. which are very politically qualified meaning but they're going to ask for something in return it is ukraine the victim of a a struggle between russia and in the e.u. it's a pool in the game or is it simply the fact going to cave which really didn't make up his mind and now the country is told between the two should it be seriously saying forget about any western interest we've got to go now purely to russia could there be some sort of compromise made a say i think russia has been acting more on the stimulus in the case of ukraine they haven't been treating it as a pawn i think president putin has said very clearly that no matter what government does in ukraine tomorrow that the it's the kong i think the west has been treating the ukraine as a pawn. against russia they're treating it as something that they can
2:19 pm
use against russian interests russia is trying to talk with the west of fighting common grima although unfortunately we're not getting the same report the response from the western countries which i examine thanks very much for the moment i just want to quickly recap. store at the moment if you just joined us here in r.t. international the fresh round of violence that has flared up in kiev these are live pictures that you're seeing there from be kept. city where another showdown between the rioters and law enforcement is happening as we speak now a deadline given to the protesters to clear the streets expired over two hours ago seven civilians and two police officers are now said to have been killed in today's fighting which has clearly become the bloodiest to hit kiev since the protests began last november one hundred twenty police officers have been injured in clashes the majority of them have needed hospital treatment rotters moved on the parliament in clash with police using firearms rocks molotov cocktails and explosives so these
2:20 pm
are the live pictures at the moment and we've been hearing from the alexia chef ski who's our correspondent he's just made his way now to kiev and we'll hear more from him at the moment but just a few minutes ago he was saying that the tensions are building more and more after the deadline exerted upon the protesters to clear the streets has now passed and they're still there alexander private she's talking to me about the tragic events unfolding in the country at the moment political analyst here alexander just one final question we're seeing all this destruction it's going to scar the country emotionally and physically for many years to come but the fact that we're seeing nine people so far dying just today what's going to happen next. unfortunately i would say the ball is in the court of all the western countries. russia. have been offering compromises. we're not seeing extremism from the other side i don't think it's stop because the same sort of
2:21 pm
demands are going to keep coming and the demonstrators are emboldened by open support receiving from the west i can't imagine. as i've said over or put in going to paris to support the straightest we're demonstrating against the government in the streets there and we all have a quick break lose so that's the problem we have and i don't think in the short term you can prevent a western country doing that but i think people need to realize what is happening and it's going to publish thank you very much indeed for joining us here in the studio political analyst live here in our international world well we've been talking we've been seeing the live pictures of those events unfolding there. has been monitoring what's been happening in the last few minutes or so bring us up to date arena tell us more about what's going on there in ukraine in the capital well the entire central square is obviously up in flames that doesn't look like there
2:22 pm
are subsiding the current moment to almost looks as if there are protesters there rising crowds in the middle of the square are setting themselves on fire because the quality of cocktails that they keep throwing out the police very often don't really reach their targets and end up falling right there on in the middle of the my daughter which is actually. respectful which is littered with multiple tents that have been set up by protesters over the past several months so a very highly dangerous situation there but it all began just about ten hours ago when the supposedly peaceful march of several hundred protesters have related to a march of the. all thousand who have started assaulting the police that was camping out by the country's parliament. the rada during the session which was taking place inside the parliament now the police the police. have been forced to respond with tear gas and rubber bullets after the protesters at that
2:23 pm
point heard two into rioters you can say started quilting rocks molotov cocktails were pretty much everything be had on this. then the confrontation has escalated even more because that's when the police started saying that this is the first time in months actually the first time in this protest that the protesters have started using a lie around even though the protestors and sisters is there not the ones using live ammo that the police the police in turn are saying they never never use live rounds on protesters throughout the entire ordeal in kiev. from there on out there is just escalated the police have succeeded in forcing the rioters from the streets there which are adjacent to the independence square they have pushed them on to the square. that took them a while to do several hours and now we are seeing essentially what could be
2:24 pm
described as a possible all solve all your might done something that a lot of the protesters have been saying is bound to happen but they've been they've been saying this for months at this point all every time we've heard such information it proved to be a rumor and at this point it finally seems like perhaps the government is starting to take on a very active role how it's also important to note the fact that the head of the security in ukraine has said that if the protesters do not clear out the dates as to the dissenters as that they are. we'll start using heavy handed methods and it does look at this point as if that indeed is what's happening we're hearing we're hearing numerous. shot like sounds that it's not clear whether those are coming from stun grenades or from whatever else could be used down there on the
2:25 pm
independence square or we're also we also know that police are using tear gas as well as water cannons at this point if you look at the pictures the water cannons could possibly be construed as somewhat of a benefit to the situation because it does not seem possible that any of the possible fire fighters could even get to this square which of course has several thousand people on it at the moment. perhaps we should also talk about the fact that some of the far right groups who have essentially started this entire mayhem in central kiev they are the ones who are calling on people who have firearms in their possession to come to the center of the ukrainian capital and for kicks it's like all of my done this from the government from from the police essentially so as sensibly the are calling for brutality and violence and. killing to continue if not to get any worse so really
2:26 pm
a very trying situation right now of course the clouds of smoke billowing from your mind done not just look good at all almost like a renaissance nightmare picture you can say and it's also important through winds resides as also a midnight on february nineteenth that's several hours. is going to be closed off to anybody entering it that the government is trying to prevent more reinforcements from coming in to help. those who continue to carry out the rise in the center of the ukrainian capital arena thanks very much indeed for that this offseason in the glasgow keeping an eye on. unfolding events there in kiev in the capital so thanks for that and i still have my guest here alexander puppet show because of the severity of the situation i'm. really in it useful for us to keep you here in the studio to give us your thoughts. as
2:27 pm
a reader was saying that the authorities look as if they are going to crackdown the protesters and bury him on the defiance all the protesting in the streets the situation is going to get a lot worse isn't it nine deaths so far just look at the pictures at the moment we see just how dangerous now and how bad is it going to get in the next few weeks. to try to make a judgment as it can be worse than twenty say listen to what you have to do as a government. if you don't do anything probably the situation is going to get much worse because whatever is making problems now she's being bold but exultant surely is the solution for the other code which i know he's already made many many concessions but is it now time for him to say i will now listen to the demands and lessen my presidential powers as the call for the two thousand and four situation which i want to talk about today would be that compromise is settle the violence
2:28 pm
because more power to the parliament less power to the president that's what they want. but he still doesn't have to step down he doesn't have to step down this thing is that incremental and you make you make concessions that they treat as a sign of weakness let's just remember what the l.a. police did in the right college in a way i don't think would have any american would have been happy for the government of california to say well let's just meet the demands of the rioters and now this is being expected of victory in a call rich i just want to say i don't know if people realize what's happening. now supporting people like touching cost of all has been proposed for a nobel peace prize he's accused of human organ trafficking this is a such people who are supporting and a former target he was he was in the state department list and what do we have we
2:29 pm
have. the biggest crime brings organized crime in europe if you if you make concessions to people like that terrorists or extremists you're going to get some similar outcome in india talking about a failed state absolutely and this is what the west is going to get if. you look which keeps. all right thank you very much indeed thanks so much for staying on alexander political analyst and giving us his thoughts here live a lot international as we see the developments unfolding in can't thank you alexander just to quickly recap for you the fresh round of violence that has flared up in kiev would be showing you live pictures now over the last forty minutes or so coming to you from central kiev where another showdown between the forstmann is happening as we speak a deadline given to the protesters to clear the streets over two hours ago seven civilians and three police officers are said to have been killed in today's fighting which became the bloodiest to hit kiev since the protests began last
2:30 pm
november hundred twenty police officers have been injured in the clashes the majority of them have needed spittal treatment and rodgers moved the parliament to clash with police using forearms rocks molotov cocktails and explosives so that brings you up to date with events there unfolding in kiev of course we'll keep you up to date with those. developing developments there in the next few hours of course and we do have a correspondent alexia chatzky he's making his way to cannes so i hope to talk to him at the top of the on about thirty minutes from now we'll take a break now because report is next here on r.t. in the news continues in just over thirty minutes from now. welcome to the kaiser report i'm max kaiser you remember girls got aarons be moving into bed added to. the.
