hello after sixteen days of sports so they drill in the celebration and the heartbreak to the twenty second winter olympics in sochi coming to a close but what a journey it's speed chock full of shattered records broken dreams and all that raw emotion that we've learned to love and cherish in the games too but of course the memories of all of the world will live on for a long long time congratulations them to all the winners and all the participants especially the russian home team for their outstanding victory one that was late in arriving all said but truly deserved when we got there and we've been busy here at r.t. me time ranking and sorting the best and brightest of the most outstanding moments of these a lympics so throughout the course of the evening i hope you can stay with us here in sochi will be bringing those to you starting first of all this with the
11:01 am
sensations of the olympics and here i am yes. well to have your head of your mouth joe the thing that we must start this all off with the course russia has successfully everyone's kind of saying that no matter who you speak to saying they did a great job at hosting these winter olympics in an area that is so tropical with palm trees cracking job and the day it was made it was brilliant and the fact that you know just forty minutes away i've been up in the mountains for the last of three weeks or so and watch plenty of things out there and it's been a similar scenario in similar sentiment because people have been saying that it's so compact it's so easy to get around the visas and the backdrops have been magnificent and then again the performances that we saw as well were brilliant to learn that russia did so well to have a medal so what are your top five sensation my top five and we're starting with number five phone just made that clear but i have to really enjoy every winter olympics the dutch team because they finished six medals to. they got eight golds
11:02 am
overall but they got them all kevin in one sport speed skating event of skates you know they did well with the mom i think will look at it. so they got twenty four medals in total twenty three of those were in speed skating you might ask where did the other medal come from kevin where does it come from a short track speed skating curvy and they really are a nation of speed skaters but my next choice is the new generation of russians that we've seen or well you know danes they've got their skates on so you were talking figure skating you saw adelina sotnikova brilliant wasn't she in the women's figure skating she got russia's first ever gold in women's figure skating athlete in pics and she did it in amazing circumstances because if you remember that night sky was g. to take gold and she was everybody's tip she fell over twice but kept her cool and produced an amazing performance not a lot of pressure actually fifty votes but girl of all over she was an awful lot of pressure from the media in the run up to this but you know that could have got to her teammate too but it didn't and she came away with gold and afterwards this is
11:03 am
what she said. because this is i would have to sosa i'm very proud to have won a gold medal at the age of seventeen it's such a great feeling it's a battle with everything including with myself sometimes i said to my mom i can't do this anymore i'm tired and she says ok give it up are still love you anyway but then i realize that i won't give up and will take my gold. star blish the russians or the new russians maybe from abroad that were russian originally take us through that it was well this time of the last pics right the people watching that were russian this time they are russian and i've come away with medals for russia that was an amazing ones too there's a chap called vic wild a snowboarder he married a right and got a russian passport and then after that he decided that he would continue with the sport in russia and enjoy the fun. we came to russia because it could get
11:04 am
a father going to states without right that's what he said but anyway he came away the two gold medals it also actually helped his wife because she's a russian snowboarder as well units of arsenal and she won a bronze so effectively his arrival helped them both this is what they said. i didn't have any good studying in the united states and that wasn't going to reach the goals that i want to. cross it was an opportunity to get the balls. to be able to do what i wanted to do to me he brought the new out because he is the way he is way more aggressive than i am he made me a little more aggressive more like a more of a more of a boss he made me engage in whatever i'm doing in you would one hundred percent. cause victory because that was the name that really stood out of that would be so when the head rolling i guess in the south korean team that let him go to come over to the russian side he's been such a star for russia it's been fantastic and i have to say it was a bit of
11:05 am
a gamble from the russians it might not look like it now but he had bad injuries as well he fell out of the south korean team he didn't make the last olympics in vancouver but russia said look we'll take you won and he's been fabulous he's come away with three gold medals i think you got a bronze too which makes him the most decorated olympian of these games and he also helped his team because they got medals as well particularly in the relay this is what he said about his achievements and also the point he's trying to make to you is that he was able to settle in russia very quickly. when i came to russia two years ago for the first three months i missed korea but then i met other athletes and things became better i like being here i like the food the culture it's all very interesting. just. what is it with dixon victors winning somebody medal c. is a good name to have there isn't a little bit i think that's why they were dogs number two number two you. know he's not victor is he but he's still very successful in fact he's the most decorated
11:06 am
winter olympians ever and he managed to achieve that after picking up two golds here in sochi in the biathlon so well done to him and these are actually his six olympics now the final one down to number one going to be apart from the russian team do gave them a chance four years ago they came away from vancouver with only three gold medals that was their worst performance ever since the fall of the soviet union no one absolutely knowing kevin was predicting they would finish top of the table here but they have done a tremendous achievement by them and you really do have to tell you how tough today all right we've got one of the top five come up for you shortly so go too far away well by any measure it wasn't blind luck we've been talking to the medalist of the russian team about their preparations for the training and they've been telling us about the lengths the country went to to ensure that they all had the proper facilities.
11:07 am
minister of sports shows they did some really good change everything for the spores they can see there were two or three games with. good medical. care of a group who are. these you know there is is there a better than whatever you think. your world athletes you've traveled around the world certainly you couldn't ignore what the western press was saying about russia about sochi ahead of these games how do you feel about that overall and do you think that people have maybe changed their stereotypes about russia. because of the show the beautiful games and the who. is the who did more for the more. you can zero four as it's very very big there are two here that it's . so best with the games all know the competition was
11:08 am
truly a limpy and i think you'll agree from years long rivalries to a plethora of photo finishes the winners were forced to give it their all if they wanted to find themselves on the podium end of the day scott to spread the games the seaside plasticized of it aside to tell us about the high poll for us not olympians it's quite hard to imagine the intensity of the competition for the people taking part in it. yes it really is a fine line isn't it between success and failure for all those joyous moments that we've seen spare a thought for those athletes who have now really missed out on success by a fraction of a second in some cases the margin between success and failure between joy and despair is so narrow that even the latest technologies concept right the competitors take for example the women's downhill skiing for the first time in winter olympics history the gold medal was actually shed and tina maze clocking identical times not even a piece of tracing paper could separate them well in the men's biathlon must start
11:09 am
french with multiple card was going for a sochi hat trick he was going for his third medal of these games he threw himself over the line in desperation but was now really missed out of it is not only edged out in the photo finish by norway's emil haye place fence in a match in the despair for four card and who can forget one of the more humorous climaxes and finishes to any race in winter olympics history it came in the men's ski cross now of the four competitors three of them fell at the final jump they all slid over the line at exactly the same time in different positions and shapes along the ground no one of them knew exactly what was going on so as we celebrate the sporting successes here in sochi let's just take a second and spare a thought for those who haven't narrowly missed out by a fraction of a second all those years of training and hard work and it comes down to the blink of an eye but of course not all the competitors here in sochi were expecting to compete for gold and not all competitors here in sochi needed a photo finish to determine their final position in the standings.
11:10 am
for some athletes twenty fourteen was simply about taking part take for example indian illusia shiva can shave in his commitment to his sport highlighted by his training regime winding his way down dusty tracks bypassing don't send lorries along the way. my wife's insight yes he may have come thirty seven thousand and thirty nine but the him there was more at stake following accusations of corruption the indian and limpid committee were suspended by the i.o.c. in two thousand and twelve and was lifted during these games meaning cachet than could finally compete under his nation's fly unfortunately there's a lot of politics played to the flag of india which i'm sure many people back home we're not happy with but now that's over that's a lesson learned for everybody and things to look ahead to one of the more colorful characters of these games was prince you purchase of hohenlohe in london the fifty

five year old is a descendant of a former german royal dinner state he's also a photographer the pop star who goes by the name of royal disaster. these are his sixth olympics the jewel nationality miti ski's for mexico he's never won a medal but maybe deserves gold for p.r. so i think that russia the only problem that at this stage of the hired a p.r. person like me to be better p.r. before i mean you know it's a great place. wonderful venue for the for everything is really. just got the positive of my over to europe and to america that were so negative it's tonga made its debut in these games bruno banani went in the luge it's not his real name mind as part of a sponsorship deal he changed his name to that of the german underwear company but he told me he wants to be known for his sporting prowess. if i didn't qualify for
11:12 am
the olympics they wouldn't care at all what names i am so i think is the most important thing that i try hard in training hard to get to the olympics. and does any winter olympics complete without the jamaican bobsled the main attraction for press and fans raising their own funds to compete missing a connecting flight losing their luggage on coming second last still didn't dampen their party spirit proving that in amongst all the sporting excellence there is still room for sports to be fun. r.t. searching. absolutely well with such fierce competition and such intense pressure it's no wonder of course it all gets the better of people sometimes as these games showed again even the most highly prepared not standing athletes can sometimes fall prey to the nerves and health for the fire those moments can be hard for the farmers here again there's talk heartbreak and disappointments what are your top five here let me start with what happened at the very beginning remember the opening ceremony and over got the closing ceremony
11:13 am
going on at the moment but you remember when you have those five rings and they were snowflakes yes and the final one didn't light up that was a tad embarrassing and many people are actually laughing at this because it looked like a promotion by andy if i can say this because of the the rings and then the little start the end like a p.p. logo you see the guy the technical director that runs the russian first show me that goes in charge of the order came to a meeting today pulled off his jumper. a t. shirt with. four of them and then just a little star he laughed he's got a good sense of here as i'm still keeps his job. anyway the next one i've got is somebody who was disappointed definitely he would be celebrating it is a chap called shaun white he's an american he's a snowboarder teammates from a bit tricky to get on with what they did he did one quite a lot. in the ninety percent he was hotly tipped to get gold in the halfpipe he's called the flying tomato because it is ginger locks butt. he went splat on his
11:14 am
first run and didn't even make the podium and then afterwards he did make some very particularly nice comments about the actual halfpipe itself and the conditions so he was moaning and he didn't make the movies alone to do that well yes but the good news is he's got billions billions millions of fans around the world and has mentioned in an interview that he would like to come back and try and regain his olympic crown at the next winter olympics in four years' time so hopefully we'll see men talking of of millions of fans around the world mr pollution of course has billions of fans around the world but real shock move for them yes definitely it started so well didn't it he he was brilliant in the team event helped russia get gold and then we were all expecting more great things in the individual men's event and he didn't even enter because he had to pull out in the warm up with his bat bat now he still has four screws in that back so you can't hold it against him it was so the rubble was all it was staged the rubble was that he took about fall it was a stage publicist you think what you think about that rubbish i can't imagine it
11:15 am
would be look he's got a chance of winning olympic gold he's shown his form a few days earlier in the team event so why on earth would be not want to go for another gold medal i genuinely believe that he was hurting he was in considerable pain had twelve back operations he was going to retire anyway at the end of these olympics there's no way he would have wanted to for it to end like this but unfortunately it did but he does leave one of the most decorated figure skaters of all time well let's go to the second biggest disappointment here as the fireworks over our shoulders go off just let you know of course but over our shoulder the closing ceremonies happening we can't show you that so we'll talk while. we're like six of your shoulders all right yes the second biggest disappointment for russian ice hockey for. the third lympics they've gone away empty handed without a medal much was made of their appearance home ice home with
11:16 am
a. nor that they've got some fabulous plays for the n.h.l. and it started pretty well he scored in the ending seconds if you remember in the end game against lavinia then they went on to. of course they had a very narrow defeat against the usa that great all our hopes too but then they lost to finland three one in the quarter finals in a game that was not exciting and it left many people disappointed but not everybody can win or number one on your list maybe you were talking about hockey it's the americans they went home most disappointed you think i would say so overall. ice hockey team even though they got to one stage further. than russia in the bronze medal game when they lost five nil to finland that was a humbling defeat for them also overall i think it's the first time since two thousand and two if i did my research that they haven't got into the top three at the end of the games in the medals table so that's disappointing for them also the
11:17 am
big disappointment the reason for this is that they failed to pick up the medals they normally do in figure skating i think the first time for ages that they haven't got a medal in even the men's or women's individual event speedskating then you got one medal four years ago in vancouver they got nine so they are disappointed but you know what the americans are like extremely strong expect to see better things. in four years time so if you list. the americans performance of problem of blogger and author daniel flew right said flynn files dot com maybe not surprisingly as big. as the u.s. team's performance he judged the showing not by the goals but by the bronze is the go. i looked at the medal count earlier today it showed that we were number one in bronze medals and i think that's about sums it up that it's been a good performance but not a great performance a little bit disappointing if you were to compare it to when we hosted the games in
11:18 am
. in two thousand and two in salt lake city the number of golds in the number of medals is just not at that level and when you consider that there are a lot more medals to be won now i think you have to look at that as a disappointment if you go past the superficial halliday's of just sort of counting medals and you look at actually what medals we've won i think that's sort of where the real disappointment lies we're most of our gold medals are in you know winter x. games style events things like the half pipe and slope style i think if you were to ask americans what the slope style is they would probably say well is it a fashion show you know people don't know what slope style is it's a new event at the olympic games and we seem to be cleaning house on the medals there. thoughts on the us performance there now has been a bright side to the hardship of the difficulties in spain their present at every winter and summer games for that matter it's the little pig spirit we're going to talk about next with champions wait for the losers in their events maybe even when
11:19 am
competing teams lend a hand to each other plenty of cases about this time around it's evident when athletes get up after a fall or a failure to finish their event these are moments that for the world let's talk sporting spirit next with richard fully one in one out ok what's your top five in sporting spirit what caught your attention to them when my number five pollution go home come on we're going to start with question going to start with like oh you know people. are going to give you're going to push and go. what an amazing feat for him to two years of injuries some of the disappointment vancouver in two thousand and ten when he could only got the silver ever a lot of people forget to get a bronze we came back to help russia when the team events and really just to come back because people just don't realize all the injury problems that he had so you really deserves a lot of acclaim for violence but i was someone who really even better that was steve all can not a household name at all but about a decade ago he suffered
11:20 am
a potentially frightening i.e. i almost wish could have let him go i like to lift him blind but he underwent a very risky operation which got rid of a problem sort of out of depression but overcame to get on the bobsled track again and he really did get his reward here with two bronze medals him a two man and a four man bobsled so that should have a far you've got to keep it was six really if you are you can get away with it was before the number four it's a young russian biathlete called you could put in. i think no one can imagine just the pain and just the disappointment when you're quitman fails halfway through a race and this is exactly what happened to show me that i was going along in one of the first events in. sprints and a rifle fails and obviously it's all very easy to compete with your rifle which you managed to continue a long way behind the field i think she finished sixty five or all in the sprints
11:21 am
and she got a warm round of applause from the crowd but again it's just a morning as a young athlete in the first olympic games obviously a nervous just to have the heart to carry on i think she deserves a lot of respect for that big part of the number three number for even got from peru. to the studio. council in fact he was the first peruvian athletes to compete for his country in two thousand and ten in vancouver games he's behind here again and it's suffered a broken rib biota month before the olympics and just tell me this race he suffered a cold about wasn't bad enough. no one really expected to get a medal and he finished twenty eight minutes behind the eventual winner. of switzerland at his when i sparred when. so intervention to get into the stadium he got a massive round of applause from the crowd who was waiting for him gave him a big hug it was nice and because you could you'd think you'd be off to his podium
11:22 am
and celebrating of your photos but we waited for the last martin to come to think of it i think is mr cussler this give me this stinking cold and the cold because here is what as well as yeah absolutely i mean there's another it's just coming on from this from cologne. back in nineteen ninety eight as a kenyan now. it's again he finished way behind the leader legendary norwegian cross-country skier. but dolly waited for him at the finish line brace and is still in touch with a very regular contact and such was the kenyans respect for dolly even named a son dolly boy as you'd know it the sixteen year old kenyan is now a cross-country skier. we're going up to number two to zero. so number two just in a couple chilcote holden's while norway dominate the cross country skiing it's hard enough to beat them when you're fit and healthy just in a culture that she suffered a fractured foot's
11:23 am
a month before the limbic system will decide to carry on jet a special boots built for these games and she took all of that we see in her favorite event the ten kilometers and managed to get victory this is this is one hartley de iron lady she prefers to climbs robin descents but she managed to be the norwegian and while said i've got to tell you how it's also holding spread over to . go to my top mark goes to tom ford of he's a russian cos country here as well but he just went he had an equipment problem halfway through his race and a sprint is broke a lot of people watching on. brilliant stories a first couple of days was yeah absolutely it's a misprint one of those events and everyone was looking on the coaches nothing was doing anything and no one was doing anything until a lot of the canadian justin wadsworth he races on to the course with a key which was meant for the canadian team it changes the ski for the russian
11:24 am
which allows russian to continue and again there was another instance where you back. over two thousand six games it's time norway will be on. the end of some help from the canadians and such was the canadians. the norwegian coaches help them the canadian fans got together and sent five tons of maple syrup to this norwegian so i'm just wondering what do with it it's the stuff that makes a loop is great yes i just wanted your top five live to see a shorter coverage as well. ok well the fans have been the inspiration for these games of course to all the people richard has talked about their competitors and it seems they've really taken it upon themselves to enjoy the experience to the fullest from this to some for. he saw vocal chords as well these olympics will be remembered as cherished. reports that. stand out from the crowd wigs schemes flags as passionate diehard
11:25 am
fans will do anything to support their chosen country this month's olympics has brought the interesting to read characters from russia and around the world the brighter the better by patriotic peacetime to cheer for their sporting heroes to some it's taken lots of preparation. as soon as it was announced that the two thousand and fourteen winter olympics would take place and saw i started getting ready for there are a lot of things i prepared for it how many clubs posters flags for others it's the first time in russia and face paint an extreme outfit so the only accepted form of attire spread the love and leave your inhibitions. so she's been a stick it has been great like it has been a great time we're having fun. if you like at all everybody's friendly.
11:26 am
the russian team fans house located inside the olympic park is a central point it's an interactive indoor museum more than ten thousand in the picture families come here every day sharing emotions impressions discuss russia's victories and watch the competition's life russian far enough down here everyone is part of the team well as the recent two man bobsled team scored goals where better to have your photograph taken here in the russian funhouse there are also various other locations where you can pretend to participate in various winter olympic sports. fans are invited to participate in physical competitions over courses on the computer and they can try to hound some olympic sports of equipment it's also school. torches from the pos lympics are on display and over one hundred fifty sporting champions from previous games and my guest appearances so far the fan house is open daily for all who are interested in like the games themselves
11:27 am
brings people from different countries together extreme fans included meaning it's less about medals i'm willing. to embrace the spools. of people even if you are dressed as president. absolutely well aside from all the official sporting records there's been a slew of unofficial and rather amusing ones too on the side i've been putting together a list of the ones i thought you'd like hearing about so without any further ado i present to you kevin zero in his own list of the other records let's take a look pop pickers show way to start off these olympics through at least three billion viewers that's almost half of the planet shooting at some point to see the action it was announced and committee head thomas back in the middle of the game so maybe the final figure could be even higher some other stuff were picked up as well the fans also said a sound level record but you did novell existed when did it happen will happen
11:28 am
during victor and speedskating a few days ago or really managed to rev up the crowd there the fans apparently were screaming so loud they reached one hundred ten decibel zz the sound guys here tell me that's allowed that is the loudest cheering anyway ever ever recorded at the olympics he did well another record was set by sochi itself during the day of the opening ceremony more births in the city than ever before well that was well time thirty four babies were born during that day and indeed one baby. baby boy in fact was born at exactly twenty fourteen our congratulations to him and a family that's the same minute of course the opening ceremony began will be some of the post about in future the weather also played a part said these were in fact the warmest winter olympic games in history it was a balmy twenty degrees at some points to compete in shirts and shorts thanks to vast amounts of snow stockpiled by the organizers though as we've been reporting at length the heat didn't impede the actual sporting events thanks for being with us
11:29 am
this is so much more to come over the next few hours from here in sochi. the g twenty four team promises we call to live in exhilarating winter sports and easy to use an hour and make of an hour and the last of our lives they can use to you for some cheap twenty four take. on r.t. . i did first state of the city address new york mayor bill de blasio said that he would put forward legislation for the city to issue special municipal identification cards to undocumented immigrants he summed up his feelings by saying to all my fellow new yorkers who are undocumented i say new york city is your home
11:30 am
too and we will not force any of our residents to live their lives in the shadows yeah that sounds nice but the reason these illegal immigrants live their lives in the shadows is because they immigrated illegally why should new yorkers bend over backwards for illegal criminal immigrants this is the same logic that if i catch a guy breaking into my house as a gracious host i should offer him a pizza because it's his home too this is not just a slap in the face to rule of law but also to the immigrants who do go through the bureaucracy and headaches to become u.s. citizens the right way the legal way so the blasio if you're going to provide these illegal immigrants with some sort of document it should be a plane ticket back home with instructions on how to apply for a green card the legit proper way just like everyone else has to fashion just my opinion. i know c.n.n. m s n b c news have taken some nuts lately but the fact is i admire their.
