ukraine's army targets the rest of the east with artillery fire leaving one village practically razed to the ground r.t. visited a training camp of self-defense watches who say they are preparing to take on the government forces. al-qaeda militants and seize control of the northern iraqi province releasing thousands of prisoners and causing a mass exodus of local residents and rolling forces that. it's almost obscene i mean i was really offended when i saw you so anger and frustration from locals at the so-called enter homeless designed to deter rough sleepers from the streets of london.
3:01 pm
everyone welcome to you if you've just joined us here on r.t. international we're live from moscow you're with me with a. calls by ukraine's newly elected president petro poroshenko to stop the military offensive in the country's restive east appeared to have rung hollow that says heavier tillery fire has already left one village in ruins this is the footage showing the devastation in c m your of the locals and say there's not a building left intact up to be on reportedly pounded the village for multiple rocket launchers for day despite this local government forces us say they will stand till the end result youth policy their report for one of the training camps if you. will with the anti-government fighters were on the way to a training camp here in the city of new guns they're not telling us exactly where
3:02 pm
this camp is because of security reasons badman how much time going to take us to get there. it's a good it's a question but we'll know when we get there bettman was a former officer with the ukrainian elite police before switching sides only a month ago he commanded a team of just twelve men today they numbered more than one hundred and are growing by the day all of them volunteers each with a code name to hide his identity how is the situation on the ground at the moment. people are very scared preparing for war we're evacuating women and children from the city bettman says that ukrainian military's tactic is to attack from behind so he's had his main spall out across the city were about to approach the cap and balance on steps to switch off the camera deep in the forests it's easy to see why they've set up base here everything is camouflaged making it difficult for the
3:03 pm
ukrainian army to find them where now at the military training camp and we're also to see them do training with knives this is training for close combat but which ones comes with the marines not planning on close combat fighting. the hatred bombing with. slovyansk in donetsk the guys here come from just about every background you have former students you have a form of businessmen you have former drivers and you also have ex-military and police so you have people with a lot of military experience but you also have some for whom this is the first time that they're picking up a knife or a gun and so the sharing of skills and experience is vital and the guys have told me to put two of these in my ears because there's going to be a hell of a noise. the automatic weapon training is the most important bettman keeps trying to control over his men many
3:04 pm
still have families inside ukraine and while we constantly about them. it's not becoming a war it's already a war. most of the guys are citizens of lugansk city they're highly motivated they're between the ages of twenty and thirty five when i asked one of them whether there are enough people here to take on the ukrainian military his answer was there is another. but how many more need to die before the queue of government itself to clear is enough is enough policy r t outside guns eastern ukraine. ukraine's president has ordered the opening of humanitarian corridors in the eastern regions but most of the other three nothing but i continued escalation of the military assault this was a statement from russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov as he met with his german and polish counterparts in st peter's square. we reduced it for those of us out of
3:05 pm
this which of those are in france if you'd see the ukraine is maintaining its military action and in some cases stepping up the assaults failure to invite representatives from the southeast to the dialogue means dragging out the conflict and continue betting on the military hoping to secure quite a bloody victory and therefore dictate terms to the southeast but you know it's a way to deepen the crisis it's a path to a catastrophe that would give us the. in iraq militants have expanded they control over northern areas including parts of the oil rich province of. some one hundred fifty thousand people fled to most iraq's second largest city in the province of the net there which was also captured by the fighters produce an armed forces were quick to flee the believed to be from an al qaida affiliated group that's responsible for a vast majority of bloody and ruthless attacks in the country the most force the
3:06 pm
prime minister told parliament to declare a state of emergency in the north are his music careful of who reported extensively from iraq told us what she believes the attack this signifies. this is the largest attack in terms of scale and significance that this group is trying to carry out and mosul and this province in mosul is iraq's one of iraq's most populous cities it's a key trade and commercial hub this provinces where much of iraq's oil wealth is located it's a key transit route too to turkey and it's also been a major focus of u.s. efforts to try to stabilize the country during the war and so the fact that militants were able to take over the city and the province with such ease i mean they're in control of the airports they've taken over key government buildings they freed thousands of prisoners from from the prisons there the fact that they've been able to do that really signifies the weakness of the central government and also sends a very strong message to both prime minister nouri al maliki about the group's strength
3:07 pm
and intentions as well as washington which is really been backing the fact that government iraq has had an election recently how stable is the country politically right now and how much control does the government really have with all these militants sort of running around ruining the place where i think the events in what we saw was you know overnight essentially really speak for themselves i mean the central government is not has not been able to dislodge the group from the anbar province and certainly was not able to hold territory here in one of the most populous city as of the entire country and on top of that iraq. been essentially dealing with a massive political and religious crisis for the past few years violence has increased the climate is much more sectarian than it had been before the shiite controlled government of nouri al maliki is not really supported by a lot of sunnis in iraq who sort of feel that they've been marginalized and oppressed by this government and there's a lot of discontent we're almost seeing the kinds of levels of violence that we saw at the height of iraq's civil war and so when you group these terrorist activities
3:08 pm
on top of the economic crisis on top of the divisions that are this going to really send a very bad message and a very disconcerting message for potential stability of this country. today also saw an attack not far from the capital of baghdad away twenty people were killed in a bombing at a funeral procession well yesterday a truck bombs exploded outside the offices of two kurdish political parties also close to the capital killing twenty nine people you can see here how the civilian death toll has been constantly growing in the country middle east expert desire to leave this funding for more powerful arab neighbors including saudi arabia that stands behind the growth of militant force in the region. we have to look at why al qaeda have managed to be revitalized and we are captivated and to become so resurgent with having so much power influence and prowess and the answer comes from all this arming funding logistical support and even going as far as paying salaries
3:09 pm
to the what how do you sell a few insurgents who converged on syria and actually all this funding going to which there in new york times have acknowledged that most of this funding and arming have actually went to the most extremist groups that is up front where i will back through baghdad the the leader of al-qaeda or of iraq have acknowledged and said that mr up front in syria is nothing but part and parcel of qaeda in iraq . but i'm from iran to pakistan which has again been shaken what a new toilet attack later the slow we examine the impact american drone strikes have had on the people of a country still in the grip of the deep security crisis. the payment deadline is once again looming for ukraine needs to cover its massive overdue bills for gas otherwise supplies could be halted the deadlock has been turning heads in a europe which remains heavily reliant on russian gas pumped via ukraine russia's
3:10 pm
energy giant gazprom has stressed these supplies would not suffer unless cure starts to safin in gas from the pipelines which it's done before but is why that the e.u. has been pushing for freeze in the south stream pipeline project designed to provide an alternative supply route brussels has demanded that bulgaria hold for work on the pipeline citing violations of e.u. laws whether both bulgaria and the second in the line of construction serbia have pledged full commitment to the project for u.s. treasury official paul craig roberts believes europe is jeopardizing its energy interest due to pressure from washington. question the pipeline is really up to your it's not up to wash it's the europeans say well look we don't want to take this risk with our energy supply it's just sort of washington can beat up on russia in the pipeline will continue the problem with the existing pipeline churning
3:11 pm
through ukraine as ukraine. and russia faces the prospect that trying to supply europe through the pipeline through ukraine would result and chat with gas. which care its gas but my point is washington doesn't share anything they could do to hurt russia if it wipes out their allies they could care less now the e.u. still relies on about a third of its natural gas consumption and in a bid to lessen it appears those of brussels is being forced to take a step back and turn to an old school source of energy coal amid rising fuel prices they ease coal consumption has been steadily rising compared to the use of natural gas that's despite a massive environmental campaigns to reduce carbon emissions and cut back on highly producing feels even germany known for its commitment to alternative energy is no
3:12 pm
exception as put all of our reports. the black cars at the center of the green dream in germany coal is back in vogue we see the renaissance of coal combusts i'm not usually this is a disaster to the credibility of germany's credentials as regards climate mitigation it's an issue that runs deep in america's government they hope to be able to generate a massive eighty percent of energy from renewables like solar and wind by twenty fifty while getting rid of nuclear. and the only other option then to keep the lights on in europe's most robust economy is to increase the use of coal by thousands of tons a year and that was mr plan this isn't how it was planned we wanted to increase renewables while lowering c o two emissions we've done the first part but at the
3:13 pm
same time we're having to burn more coal to meet demand so our c o two emissions have gone up rather than down in early june the local authority near this pits agreed to remove a further two hundred million tons of brown coal from the open cast mines in the area up to twenty twenty six that germany is ramping up its use of this particular type of cold that produces a lot of carbon dioxide deeply concerns environmental campaigners. from other scientific results we have the inevitable result of the continued use of brown coal would be a global catastrophe the effects will be felt worldwide. but its power plants like this that are needed if germany is to continue its economic cutting edge as well as prevent household energy prices from soaring. coal has a massive role to play for many years if we want to secure an affordable source of power germany has the second highest reserves of brown coal on the planet those in
3:14 pm
charge of this operation question the government line that the only future is renewables. chancellor merkel is a doctor of physics and i'm sure she realizes that those laws can't be broken if we want to use power as we do we need coal not just now but over the next two to three decades despite the country's green lobby pushing for more wind and solar power it does seem that the only really reliable source of energy for germany at the time being is coal peter all over germany. well let's all return true one of our top stories this hour iraq's northern province a native there has been seized by al-qaeda militants thousands fled the region's capital musial and we're now hearing reports that part of a neighboring province has also been taken we're going to discuss these latest developments in iraq with american political analyst gina priya who joins me live now good to have you with us this incident that's happening is obviously quite
3:15 pm
concerning what does it say about the overall situation in the country. well i think it shows that the situation is extremely unstable and as those of us who are involved in the antiwar movement were saying really from day one the u.s. invasion was going to significantly destabilize the country and that is exactly what we've seen is that we had an invasion and occupation that was followed by a political set up that was extremely exclusionary of a wide range of iraqi people's i think what we're seeing now are the fruits of that process which have polarized the country and really fragmented to a large degree and now we see these tensions escalating to to one of their highest levels so heart of the country then get back to its knees again i mean how do you get a grip on security when the situation is looking to wade in. well i mean i think it's very difficult i mean i think certainly what would have to happen is that the central government would have to take a much more inclusive attitude but at this point i think that the reality of the
3:16 pm
situation is that the only way is a process of national reconciliation of iraqis who over this long period since two thousand and three have been divided in so many different ways and how exactly that takes place has to be left up to them but i think that what the united states has done for example by providing things like hell fire missiles to them the leaky government and other security systems to quote unquote more aggressively prosecute the quote unquote war on terrorism which is how the leakey is selling his moves are only exacerbating the situation and only inflaming the war like tension so at the very least the united states has to change its tack as do the other western nations of militarily supporting them a leaky government and deepening the war situation as opposed to trying to move all parties towards a process of national reconciliation terminations among iraqis i was going to touch a little bit more on that you saying the country is being divided within is it just pure want to see terri and violence has taken place always is also a political challenge you spoke a little bit about that i want you to just elaborate more on it. well i don't think
3:17 pm
it's purely sectarian i think there is a political element and i think when we see really all of the factions or or people let me put it to you like this people on both sides of this debate have at different times tried to reach out across the ethnic and sectarian divides to find allies and it's never really worked and what we see is people i think reverting to a long term or at least occupation age reliances amongst their quote unquote their own people i guess you could say which are more solid and often back backed by much more history of cooperation and solidarity amongst different factions and so i think that you know there is a sectarian element but if we look at the history of violence iraq modern iraq it's mostly secular and it's mostly something where we see people collaborating whether they're christian sunni shiite kurd we see maybe a little less the kurds but certainly we've seen collaboration across all of these lines in what could be termed the recent past and so i think it's not purely sectarian and even to the degree it is i don't view this as a permanent issue but from the point of view of the political power brokers at the
3:18 pm
top of each sect the easiest way i think for them to maneuver and gain power is for them to push a relatively sectarian posture in an attempt to strengthen their own forces at the base all right we're going to have to leave it right there thank you very much americana political analyst a huge in show me about his thoughts on what's going on in iraq at the moment right who will be back on that. you're watching r.t. international we'll have more news just off to this do you stay with us. this immediately though so we leave the. bush and secure. your party physical. issues that no one is asking with again they deserve answers from. politics only on our team.

there's a famous line in jaws where. the fishermen on the boat one of them says we're going to need a bigger boat i mean this is what the european central bank has told the market that the fraud is so enormous at this point that in order to accommodate another ten to fifteen trillion dollars worth of credit default swaps and derivatives and such like fraud they're going to expand their balance sheet by ten or fifteen trillion euros they need a bigger boat. thanks for staying with us metal spike things told to deter homeless people from sleeping
3:20 pm
by the front doors of a luxury apartment block in london have caused outrage after the pictures went viral but the number of rough sleepers having nearly doubled in the british capital in the past three years the issue of over what to do is a proving a dilemma so our french takes up the story. well these small spikes of calls on social media over the last couple of days the so-called anti homeless they're more like the sort of thing that you see on windows to prevent pigeons from landing there but it seems that these have been installed to prevent homeless people from sleeping well in this spot and it sparked widescale debate with everyone from the mayor of london he called them ugly self-defeating and stupid to members of the public and even some of the residents who we've spoken to who live here he want to see the spikes for me. it's a it's almost obscene i mean i was really offended when i saw myself because i
3:21 pm
thought it's it's sending an awful bad message to homeless people you know it's in move from here don't come back but move somewhere else and i think that's that's not going to solve the problem but others supported it one resident coming out angrily removes the ban is protesting the spikes the finger of blame is pointing towards one of the private properties management companies that they say fall fails to respond to artie's questions this isn't a new phenomenon as we're told by angie ferris he spent six years homeless on the streets of london extremely dangerous very lonely it's very very hard you don't know where the next new is coming from because you have no positions you have no money homeless people have nothing if you're on the street they have you have this place literally to sleep on which they are now at the moment. you know that's the place they have to sleep that's their home that is all they've got there's nothing
3:22 pm
else in the world i think that's very sad don't you think other areas of london to you have seen similar measures like this supermarket in essential london high street charities that had been documenting the rising number of homeless in london say this simply isn't the way to deal with the issue well the long. this points to the fact that they've already invested thirty four million pounds in scenes like no second night out designed to try to ensure that rusty does never spend more than one evening on the streets the reality though from what we're told by homeless charities and from what the figures seem to indicate is that homelessness and rust leaping is an ongoing and growing problem and this latest controversial anti homeless spike that have appeared perhaps a sad indication of just how far person still has to go in tackling this issue sara for reporting for us from london. chinese companies on

a shopping spree in the us investing is best man doubled in two thousand and thirteen rather reaching a record high of fourteen billion dollars now over the past decade the chinese have been buying up firms in sectors ranging from energy food to entertainment the biggest deal yet for a bacon love with last year's purchase of the world's largest producer of smithfield and in the most recent case a taxpayer backed electric car company was sold to a chinese manufacturer marina as the details america's costly loss has turned into a big game for its number one global competitor chinese auto parts dealer the want shang group has purchased the deep long u.s. electric car company that actually failed to pay back nearly one hundred forty million dollars to american taxpayers before declaring bankruptcy to school automotive receive the federal funds energy department's advanced technology

3:25 pm
a long term plan the fact that the us government extended millions of dollars of loans to this company and then let the company go bankrupt and then let a foreign entity purchase that technology shows the lack of long term planning on the part of u.s. industrial policy the new chinese auto owner reportedly plans to produce the formerly u.s. own electric cars in finland however one shang is said to be considering the potential for u.s. production in the future imagine a scenario where china is bringing manufacturing back to american morning from new york during a fortnight. of the world cup kicks off in just two days and brazil is getting ready to rumble and ethan our looked at the media reaction to the event and help program in the now is a quick look. at
3:26 pm
. the course a maze or sporting event without the input of the mass media would be just as boring but they have to always be so negative that many people are all skiing why at the last minute still so much work needs to be to face shaping up to be the most expensive world cup in history the biggest drug cartel was promising to quote world cup of terror although it's not as bad as the sochi buzz kill. word of a possible new terror threat character a terrorist threat a terrorist threat to toilets and by that i toothpaste containing explosive material to track of something bad happening in sochi well it's increasing by the day but still the media is not letting brazil off the hook easy when it comes to their world cup they're highlighting at any chance they get any fails from security
3:27 pm
and health problems to organizational glitches such as changes in seating plans and safety concerns joining us in the now is graham phillips he is in brazil of course cram a lot of negative p.r. on brazil as a host nation you're there on the ground is it that bad well you know well you know i'm really the story's not any sort of just full of bugs and see it and it's even like bringing up south africa the walkup host four years ago say a soccer ball descends of brazil disillusionment over the last tournament still lingers so it feels that there's a little of a purposeful kind of digging up of this negativity this sense of it is kind of along the lines that it's bide it's always li you know we've been extensive coverage of bird strikes. you know death. has been cost overruns of in this world cup is now going to be the most expensive in history you are starting to feel that the time to say these things the time to make this point has

passed and now it's really more the western media almost just don't want to let it go there almost like a dog with a bow you can't let it go the kind of a do mongering and the mood in the streets is that look that's cost and really people want to have the opportunity to host what is a magical a truly you know remarkable the truly outstanding celebration of the international community of world football. well watch in the now with an isa now on our you tube channel for more on. that coming up next and cause a report here on our anti international day stay with us for more on that. recent events in ukraine definitely have a wide range of interpretation both russia and the west accuse the other of doing
3:29 pm
a lot of meddling some people call those who are fighting out east separatists or terrorists but others call them a people's militia fighting the kiev and this sort of situation everyone has their bias and it's hard to tell what is going on but i can tell you one thing in the sea of opinion the kiev side is using artillery and fact there have been numerous reports of artillery strikes like the one that just a few days ago hit the sales of hope orphanage which was thankfully empty at the time why is our tour such a big deal well if you send guys with guns in the fight they're going to see their target try to kill it but artillery shoots targets the katie even see they just throw shells at a general location and interestingly enough many locations seem to be in populated areas of the breakaway republics so who is the actual target of randomly shelling populated areas well if we turn our brains for a second we can see that artillery is one of the worst ways to take out a specific threat in a local population but it sure is a good way to eliminate the entire local population because maybe that's who the quote threat actually is but that's just my opinion.
