tv   Larry King Now  RT  July 16, 2014 9:00pm-9:29pm EDT

9:00 pm
larry king al americas al blog the legendary willie nelson i look at myself more of a writer really. guitar player in the singer's comes in there you go a little later on i started out when i was a kid smokin anything i could get going to. corn silk smitha cedar bark never have a bad night i've had better nights i thought last night was a pretty good show well one of them plus turned down something she was taking. movie role maybe some kind of pill or something all that stuff on larry king mel.
9:01 pm
was on the larry king now what an extraordinary event this is going to be i've known him a long time but i've never worked on the bus i'm with the legend the outlaw the man himself the one and only the country music luminary willie nelson he's going to perform at the wilton theater here tonight in los angeles for inside the tour bus in the wilton theater performance where it was will feature willie nelson and family is you live on this bus you literally live on this block yeah you know i very rarely or ever go into a hotel is stay right here i've got everything i need i got food and showers in your home do you park in the driveway and live in the bus. when there's no one there but me i do you know no one and he is home at the cabin well i'll get off the bus and go up there but is it about the bus and the new life is what feels like home you know i've been here so many years and so many nights spent here that it
9:02 pm
feels as much like home as any place else so beyond going to your home in maui you bus america pretty much pretty much well and love it and love how wind of the idea of working with the family stars. well you know my sister and i have been playing music together all our lives and so that kind of started out as a family a musical and. we just kind of had a different members of the family on the show as they got up older enough to play so many are in the group now on we've lost a few you know we lost the spirit. and and but what is around the boys here lucas and mike and you know not only every show going every time we get a chance we put them on the show this is becoming a household name right isn't it going to be. because they want to be do you think they're fresh you're living up to the nelson name i'm sure there is yeah you know i
9:03 pm
wished i thought about that you know being it's all about hank williams jr you know he had a tough go to name them willie nelson jr no that was probably a smart. think so that would add things to it we off the low octogenarians yes our oh yes we do feel weighty you know he did the why did you think you were going to this long i wouldn't play and. i didn't prepare for eighty and i never thought i'd get past twenty one the way things were going there you know you know it's so everything's cool do you ever think about departing the earth. we worry about it and i don't worry we get over going to go one day all our friends are to go before a show they're up there laughing and they're worried about frank said the hardest part is seeing friends go yeah that's hard now to live your friends and when you know live is a long way to a valley of a lot of friends and you not kid in twenty thirteen you release the album to all
9:04 pm
the girls way you do whether only with women want to come to that. oh no i just thought that. it was a good idea just off to you know first of all i get to saying all the great singers and. that was one very great enticement to do it and it sounded like a might be a pretty good commercial idea and it was and it was because i got all of the good ones you know out there that i could find and you have done a special register when you sing with the girl disappeared it doesn't all work there would always work right. it doesn't but it's a feel you know as any singer can tell you know they sing what they feel and if some singer will make you feel one way will and that's good we recorded with my wife a great song called a good i give great song and it's going to be released this year and we have a little treat for you this was on the show it to discredit his willie nelson and
9:05 pm
shaun king and i give your son one can. run. a song. or. there's no one can miss the willie nelson voice right and you come on it's there's no what we like it. how do you view yourself or had a cigarette you. well you know i'm really you know i know who the singers are you know sinatra. right price was a fantastic singer. but i look at myself more of
9:06 pm
a writer really. a guitar player and singer comes in there you know a little later on he did a great album we just did pop songs start to start and skies one of the great blue skies if you like doing that oh yeah that's thirty five years ago we did it and we did it live again at the hollywood bowl with the symphony last year so you bring a country version to it or your own version of bring whatever. we're going to be gone a natural couple weeks to interview dolly parton and give her a lot you are right she's great she's in the to all the girls oh yeah i know did she change the landscape of country music we have not she did and of course her in puerto together had all those great television shows and that opened up a whole new audience out there and he's gone now he's gone. you sang with
9:07 pm
dolly right and so young i'll say you know anything you don't know about her that i could ask her probably. but i don't know you'll have to ask her about one time we met one time oh yeah embarrassing things happened so you haven't really heard about political as the source of the politics still you define yourself as liberal i would define it just. how but you are you have certain faith that you are religious and i was raised in the methodist church taught sunday school the baptist church later also a ship do faith and politics makes the you go do it. serve serve only albums and you don't i don't know well you know quite a few would have done you know gospel bluegrass reggae i know something i haven't done rap. i don't have a gun rap we did something really all talk and blues that years ago that was
9:08 pm
scuppered guys in country music they did what they call the talking blues and not just to wrap but you've done that i didn't do it i didn't do it but i listened to it and i enjoyed it what got you into i know you're an advocate for the legalization of marijuana by the way there are probably three sure things in life death taxes and marijuana is going to be legal there is a poll a pew research poll released today three out of four americans favor the foley you'll ization them out one did you ever think that would happen you know i'm not going to you know i thought maybe eventually it would when people wised up and started looking at it. plus realizing that there's some money there somebody make and you know damn right up to the criminals are making this so now the state of washington in colorado has taken in a ton taxing it as was how good it's good you started smoking well i started out when i was a kid smoke and anything i could get. corn silks you know cedar bark. and
9:09 pm
then rolled up a new store rolling up border and then my lungs gave out on me i had emphysema and i was you know a launch collapse and pneumonia for five times so i quit smoking cycles. and since then in pretty healthy marijuana does not affect the long as the way to back not the way to back it is you know i mean i've lost a lot of members of my family to tobacco my mother my dad stepmother a lot of people that smoked and died so i know that you know marijuana is not that bad did you sense there were health benefits to it you know i could i felt better and i felt more relaxed and i think you know stress is the biggest killer we've got so if you can rely actually you'll be healthier and you never get up type when you're on marijuana necessarily unless you get it you know a little paranoid sometimes people who want to smoke
9:10 pm
a little too strong do you small gary day i don't think i've missed a day in yours. really so it's a habit well i think it's a good habit for me you know i don't recommend it for anybody you know weeks but for me it's seems to help me it's going to come first gay marriage or legal marijuana that's a battle now to the finish line is it had gone to thank you we've got a five states with gay marriage six states i think and two with marijuana legal but we're on the way i think we are and i don't you know i think it would probably be at a time when they're probably all work out about the same time because it's she's really dumb to not think about it any other way if you were told over the world pretty much give a favorite place to go. but well i enjoy i enjoy our work in texas a lot just shrug but i have a lot of friends and fans there but i enjoy women in germany amsterdam's a great place to go where it's always been illegal yet you have all been stood up
9:11 pm
for not only you criticize our government when it has to be criticized but you certainly stood up for the farm worker. you know we stand in that category. you do farm aid we should go to the farm in this i don't how many years it's been. you know thirty forty years we are you know roe we've been doing. during that time i've seen some promising changes i've seen more farmers getting into organic farming. have seen. the corporations are. being forced to back off a little bit because they'd gotten to the point where they were it kill you if you had a rant and you had a farm next to mine and they could tell you that you had to use pesticides and chemicals on your property or they wouldn't give you a loan to farm next year or they sue you for contaminating nerve property and that still goes on in certain cases but it's people are beginning to wise up about the big the big corporations have heard it's a small little fun though farmers the backbone of america and they've been trying
9:12 pm
to for years trying to push or may not have a favorite candidate twenty sixteen. i don't think there is going to run i think she will i think she'll probably win do you have you gone out on the road of the candidates and moving into the gale again fact i'm doing a fundraiser for windy down in texas you know she's running for governor down there yeah she took a shot and she's got a shot and you know all all the girls a lot of you know. that the record by the way that brings up something that wonderful record you did all the girls i've loved before but that was a that's become a classic right why i guess so it was. really great having you know dolly in law rather than you know norah and all those great singers over the song you sang with. leo leo to all users yeah how did that come about that was a great whose idea was that it was his i was over an england listen to the radio
9:13 pm
one i listen to b.b.c. and i heard this voice again and it asked somebody that was on this or you dummy that's julio iglesias. so we'll shoot i want to record a song with him. i didn't know that he'd already sold nine million records of languages you know so i thought i had discovered early oh. but it was his idea to do it was his idea to do it to all the girls who wrote the song and. willie nelson's our guest will be right back from the bus stop away. it's a. very hard to take a. quick break here.
9:14 pm
if the people.
9:15 pm
your friend posts a photo from a vacation you can't afford. to different. your boss repeats the same old joke of course you like. your ex-girlfriend still tends to rejection poetry keep. what really matters. to your facebook. yellow feel that you look back on your life. thank you so the fullest. i don't think i missed much. up and down right up and down a good bed you know i think up pretty much covered you've watched the rise of country music too through the years were you surprised how far it's come you know
9:16 pm
i'm really surprised it took so long because you know i grew up and you know it was thought it was good. but it took awhile for other stations to pick it up and. you know i don't know too much about the. young country guys and gals coming up but you know i hear some good ones and you know wish them a lot of life but i go all the way back to the lefty for sale hank williams ray price are you considered a standard country i think so i guess where bit means at all no standard me why are you know that the songs that we are all known through the years. yeah so here we are you know we. love you hank williams songs every night on the show and try to throw all that stuff out of people really enjoy it you've done a lot of movies to a few you do not really well i don't know that we ever retire i don't think so i don't know i wouldn't want to quit enjoy playing music joy the crowd enjoy
9:17 pm
travelling and or the bustle of it i would ever want to quit others the energy keep you stay in it just. i think i mean you know the i get a lot of energy playing music and i think it's the best exercise that you can get to get out there and sing for an hour and a half or two hours using your lungs and i think that's why people traveled so many miles to come see you because they do the same thing they upload to sing along with their healthy and never thought of it that way but it is a great energy exchange out there now sinatra share a love for frank yours or your sinatra told me once that no matter what where he's attained in life whenever he's about to go on stage he's still gets that little bump that little jump to get out there and do it what do you do you have any moments before you go on or is it just another night. i don't know i think there's different nights when i feel more like it's another night you know sometimes. when
9:18 pm
you feel like you've been overbooked or something and you've been out there too long and you kind and we'll you know just another night we're around no why am i here you know. i enjoy your have a bad night a very minor no it's better night she arrived you know supply chain or i know i played better than i did i thought last night for instance and that's probably you know i go back to last night or the night before i thought last night was a pretty good show where we're you know with. riverside i think. is that right rivers are you ever on stage and not know what city you're in many towns that somebody would ask me i said i don't know. dr did you ever think of other things why you think well it's different if i do i'll remember oh forget what i'm doing and also i have to because i don't have any monitors out there the lyrics i do all my songs from memory so you have a pre-show rituals like this is before
9:19 pm
a show you them to do the night is there anything special duty to your voice you do oh you're a little exercises well i feel like that if i were found if i work it out a little bit it's helpful when i get out there so it's not all brand new to me today that i'm you know i start out saying it was career and. came at the first note so i'd like to warm up a little bit what are your thoughts on the current state of countries are like it i think it's good you know it's all good you know. it's moved away from its roots joe . and i haven't you know known a lot of people that have. you know the roots will be changing as we go on but i think the good stuff that we all grew up with will still be there you've always been kind of a sex symbol to really thank you you know that you are in fact i must have been there when you sang with my wife u.c.l.a.'s you got it done a little jealous and then when you did the video connected when you put some put
9:20 pm

9:21 pm
road they you know they make so much money in the studio they don't really have to go on the road one of the saddest things currently is the to dish and glen campbell you know he has olds on listens to how important was he in on the ceiling he was very important here you opened up a brand new audience up there with you singing in play and in his style. you know. unlovely i was on his t.v. show for a while in a row for his publishing company and so we're good played golf with him a lot of good friends are going to get top players he's one of the best one of the best other guitar player you. i'm a better songwriter. we have some social media questions for willie nelson joe and kathy ben phil on facebook is there any particular story you could or would share about your times on the road with wayland well it and i were the best of friends

and we were we were like. oh married couple you know. when agree on anything in the book we love each other and we love to are gay and you know and when we went out with a highwayman with chris and me and and wailin and john that was the most fun in the world just arguing with a whale and listening to christen oil on our analysts thought kris kristofferson should have been bigger than he was but he was he still the best songwriter out there really. and i'm thinking with james mccollum on facebook why the braids while i'm pissed if you people often i figured it was worth doing. all of them doing it alone even already know thirty forty fifty i don't know i am any idea of her identity day yeah i'm the one time the first time i started wearing brace ourselves religio shaver and in a studio in nashville he said you look out rageous. like that or we wouldn't be willie without braids bryson knots on facebook as you look back on your career
9:23 pm
what's the one thing that sticks out the most that the biggest impact in your life was there a turning point in your life was there a hit record was there a moment when willie nelson became the willie nelson well there was a time there one when i was working with the right price i played bass and ray process band for a long time and whenever we'd come back to nashville and have a few days off i wrote for parent previews a can so we would go into the studio and record songs that i had written songs that hank cochran had written and harlan howard some of the writers their paper music and i go in with the right price van and make the demos with the pay and i've just been traveling with jimmy day play and studio and some of the greatest musicians in the world so i felt like my demos that i made were better than the records that i came out with. and i still think they said i'd sprung you yet the demos she

9:26 pm
