tv Larry King Now RT July 16, 2014 11:01pm-11:30pm EDT
11:01 pm
i was on the larry king now what an extraordinary event this is going to be i've known a long time but i've never worked on the bus i'm with the legend the outlaw the man himself the one and only the country music luminary willie nelson he's going to perform at the wilton theater here tonight in los angeles for inside the tour bus in the wooden theater performance where it was will feature willie nelson and family does you live on this bus you literally live on this block yeah you know i very rarely or ever go into a hotel a stay right here i've got everything i need i got food and showers and when you're home do you park in the driveway and live in the bus when there's no one there but me i do you know now one and he is home to cab and well i'll get off the bus and go up there borders are about the bus then and to the right is home feels like home you know i've been here so many years and so many nights spent here that it feels
11:02 pm
as much like home as any place else so beyond going to your home in maui you bus america pretty much pretty much. wow and love it and love it how winds of the idea of working with the family stars. well you know my sister and i have been playing music together all of our lives and so it kind of started out as a family musical and. we just kind of had it different members of the family on the show as they got up old enough to play it so how many are in the group now. we've lost a few you know it'll be spears and we love and and but he's around the boys you know lucas and mike and you know not only every show going every time we get a chance we put them on the show this is becoming a household name right isn't it it's going to be. because he wants to be do you think they're fresh you're living up to the nelson name i'm sure there is yeah you know i was i thought about that you know being i thought about hank williams jr and
11:03 pm
you know he had a tough go to name them willie nelson jr no i was probably as smart as you think i think so that would add things to it we're off the low oxygen ariens is our oh yes we do feel eighty no need to do i did you think you were going to this long i wouldn't play and. i didn't prepare for eighty i never thought i'd get past twenty one the way things were going there you name it it's so everything's cool do you ever think about departing the earth you worry about it and i don't know you know we're going to go one day all our friends and go on before so they're up there laughing and what if they're worried about frank said the hardest part is seeing friends go yeah that's hard and outlive your friends and when you know live as long as we do without we have a lot of friends and you're not kid in twenty thirteen you release the album to all
11:04 pm
the girls where you do whether only with women one front of that. oh no i just thought that. it was a good idea just off to you know first of all i get to saying all the great singers and. that was one very great enticement to do it and it sounded like a might be a pretty good commercial idea and it was and it was because i got all of the good ones you know out there that i could find and you have done a special register when you sing with a girl does it it doesn't all work there would always work right. it doesn't but it's a feel you know as any singer can tell you know they sing what they feel and if some singer will make you feel one way will and that's good we recorded with my wife a great song called i get i give a great song and it's going to be released this year and we have a little treat for you this was on the show it to discredit his willie nelson and
11:05 pm
shaun king and i give you're someone i can. see. there's no one can miss the willie nelson voice right and you come on it's there's nobody like it how do you view yourself or had a cigarette you. well you know i'm really you know i know who the singers are you know sinatra. right price was a fantastic singer. but i look at myself more of
11:06 pm
a writer really. guitar player singer comes in there you know a little later on he did a great album we just did pop songs start to start and sties one of the great blue skies if you like doing that oh yeah that's thirty five years ago we did it and we did it live again at the hollywood bowl with the symphony last year so you bring a country version to it or your own version of bring whatever. we're going to be gone the nashville. interview dolly parton and give her a lot you are right she's great she's in the to all the girls oh yeah i know did she change the landscape of country music we have not she did and of course her importer together had all those great television shows and that opened up a whole new audience out there and he's gone now he's gone. you sang with
11:07 pm
dolly right you said you know. anything you don't know about her that i could ask her probably. but i don't know you'll have to ask her about one time we met one time oh yeah embarrassing things happened so you haven't really heard about it yet political as the source of the politics still you define yourself as liberal i would define it just. how but you are you have certain faith that you are religious and i was raised in the methodist church taught sunday school too bad just church later also a ship to faith and politics mix the you get to do it yes or serve only albums and you don't i don't know well you know quite a few would have done you know gospel bluegrass reggae i know something i haven't done rap. i don't have a gun rap we did something really all talk and blues that years ago that was scuppered guys in country music they did what they call the talking blues and that
11:08 pm
just to wrap you done that i didn't do it i didn't do it but i listened to it and i enjoyed it what got you into i know you're advocating for the legalization of marijuana by the way there are probably three sure things in life death taxes and marijuana is going to be legal there is a poll a pew research poll released today three out of four americans favor the foley gill ization them out one did you ever think that would happen you know i'm not going to you know i thought maybe eventually it would when people wised up and started looking at it. plus realizing that there's some money there somebody make and you know damn right up to the criminals are making this so now the state of washington in colorado has taken in a ton that's like taxing it it was how good it's gotten started smoking well i started out when i was a kid smoke and anything i could get. corn silk from cedar bark.
11:09 pm
and then rolled up a new store rolling up border and then my lungs gave out on me i had emphysema and i was you know a launch collapse of pneumonia four or five times so i quit smoking cycles. and since then i've been pretty healthy marijuana does not affect the lungs the way the back not the way back it is you know i mean i've lost a lot of members of my family to tobacco my mother my dad stepmother a lot of people that smoked and died so i know that you know marijuana is not that bad did you sense there were health benefits to it you know i could i felt better and i felt more relaxed and i think you know stress is the biggest killer we've got so if you can rely actually you'll be healthier and you never get up type when you're on marijuana necessarily unless you get it you know a little paranoid sometimes people who want to smoke a little too strong do you small going to day i don't think i've missed
11:10 pm
a day in yours. really so it's a habit well i think it's a good habit for me you know i don't recommend it for anybody you know weeks but for me it's seems to help me what's going to come first gay marriage or legal marijuana that's a battle now to the finish line is it had gone to thank god we've got a five states with gay marriage six states i think and two with marijuana legal but we're on the way i think we are and i don't you know i think it would probably be a tie in there and probably all work out about the same time because it's she's really is dumb to not think about it any other way if you were told over the world pretty much you have a favorite place to go where i enjoy you know i enjoy work in texas a lot just right you have a lot of friends and fans there but i enjoy being women in germany amsterdam's a great place to go where it's always been illegal yet you have all been stood up
11:11 pm
for not only you criticize our government when it has to be criticized but you certainly stood up for the farm worker. you know we stand in that category. you do farm aid we should go to the farm in this i don't know how many years it's been going over thirty forty years we're going to row we've been doing. during that time i've seen some promising changes i've seen more farmers getting into organic farming. seen. the corporations are. being forced to back off a little bit because they've gotten to the point where they were it till you if you had a rant and you had a farm next to mine they could tell you that you had to use pesticides and chemicals on your property or they wouldn't give you a loan to farm next year or they sue you for contaminating nerve property and that still goes on in certain cases but it's people are beginning to wise up about the big the big corporations have all heard it as more than a little fun though farmer is the backbone of america and they've been trying to
11:12 pm
for years trying to push him hard have a favorite candidate twenty sixteen don't think that one is going to run i think she will i think she'll probably win do you have you gone out on the road for candidates and and you know again i have fact i'm doing a fund raiser for windy down in texas you know she's running for governor down there yeah she's got a shot and she's got a shot and you know all the girls are like are you know. that record by the way that brings up something that wonderful record you did all the girls i've loved before that that was a that's become a classic right why i guess so but it was. really great having you know dolly in law rather than you know you know our own almost great singers over the song you sang with. really. how did that come about there was a whose idea was that it was his i was over and listen to the radio one i listen to
11:13 pm
b.b.c. and i heard this voice again and i asked somebody that was in this or you dummy that's julio iglesias. so we'll shoot a little record a song with you know. i didn't know that he'd already sold nine million records and language is also up although i discovered early oh. it was his idea to do it was his idea to do to all the girls he wrote the song in. willie nelson's our guests will be right back from the bus stop boy. i married you join me. in that in park and fanfare for terry and for me and much much. only on bass and on.

11:15 pm
don't think i've missed much. up and down right up and down a good bit i think up pretty much coverage you've watched the rise of country music too through the years were you surprised how far it's come you know i'm really surprised it took so long because you know i grew up in it always thought it was good. but it took awhile for other stations to pick it up and. you know i don't know too much about the. young country guys and gals coming up but to get i hear some good ones and you know we should a lot of life when i go all the way back to the lefty for sale hank williams ray price you considered a standard two hundred i think so i guess where bit means i don't know standard me you know that the songs that we they're all known through the years. so you know we've you know you know we. do a lot few songs every night on the show and try to throw all that stuff out of
11:16 pm
people really enjoy it you've done a lot of movies too a few you get out really well one of them will you ever retire i don't think so i don't i would not want to quit and you know i play music joy. and joy travel enjoy the bus so that i would ever want to quit others energy keep up you stay energized. i think i'm you know the i get a lot of energy playing music and i think it's the best exercise that you can get to get out there and sing for an hour and a half or two hours using your lungs. i think that's why people travel so many miles to come see you because they do the same thing they upload to sing along with their healthy i never thought of it that way but it is great energy exchange out there sinatra share a love for frank yours or your sinatra told me once that no matter what where he's attained in life whenever he's about to go on stage still gets that little bump
11:17 pm
that little jump to get out there and do it what do you do you have any moments before you go on or is it just another night. i don't know i think there's different nights when i feel more like it's another night you know sometimes. when you feel like you've been overbooked or something and you've been out there too long and then you come and we'll you know just another night were around why am i here you know. i enjoy never have a bad night. where you are no it's i've had better night she arrived you know she lights or i thought i played better than i did i thought last night for instance and that's probably you know i go back to last night or the night before i thought last night was a pretty good show where we're you know of the. riverside i. was at right rivers are you ever on stage and not know what city you're in a marriage if. somebody were to ask me i shall i don't know.
11:18 pm
dr did you ever think of other things why you think well it's different if i do i'll remember forget what i'm doing and also i have to because i don't have any monitors out there the lyrics i do all my songs from memory so you have a pre-show rituals like this is before a show you them to do the night is there anything special to the two of you voice you do all your a little exercises well i felt i could have found it if i work it out a little bit it's helpful when i get out there so it's not all brand new to me today that i'm you know i'll start out saying it was career and. the first note so i'd like to warm up a little bit what are your thoughts on the current state of countries are like and i think it's good you know it's all good. it's moved away from its roots though well it has but it and i haven't you know not a lot of people that have all the you know the roots will be changing as we go on but i think the good stuff that we all grew up with will still be there you've
11:19 pm
always been kind of a sex symbol to really thank you you know that you are in fact i must have been there when you sang with my wife is jealous you got it done a little jealous and then when you did the video connected when you put some put her arms around you in this bus yeah and i wasn't there for you either got it or you don't and you challenge it you know you did it baby she's a beautiful lady what is missing with her again and what is nashville like today is still the center or i guess it is i enjoy going up there and i'm your recording there still have a lot of you know a lot of friends in la they're better cities to record in than others is there a nashville sound. well there definitely used to be a nashville sound and i'm sure there still is but you know out of my last album they were they are just finished i did it in nashville with a net for musicians with buddy cannon producing it and is there some of the
11:20 pm
greatest musicians in the world right there in nashville that he can pick up the phone and say hey i want to do an album and they'll you know they're the best musicians in the world is weird because studio musicians right here and they where rarely tread very very rarely go out on the road they you know they make so much money in the studio they don't really have to go on the road one of the saddest things currently is the to digital go and campbell you know it has all its on listens to how important was he in on the ceiling he was very important here you opened up a brand new audience out there with you singing in play and in his style. you know . unlovely i was on his t.v. show for a while in a row for his publishing company and so we're good play golf with him a lot of good friends are going to get top players he's one of the best one of the best other guitar player you. i'm

a better songwriter. we are some social media questions for willie nelson joe and kathy ben phil on facebook is there any particular story you could or would share about your times on the road with wayland well and i were the best of friends and we were we were like. an old married couple you know. when they agree on anything in the book we love each other and we love to are gay and you know and when we went out with a highwayman with chris and me and and wailin and john that was the most fun in the world just arguing with a whale and listening to christian moylan or always thought kris kristofferson should have been bigger than he was but he was he still the best songwriter out there really oh yeah and i'm thinking with james mccollum on facebook why the braids why out of pissed if you people off and i figured he was worth doing. all of them doing it alone even already know thirty forty fifty i don't know i am
11:22 pm
any idea of him or a daddy day. a member one time the first time i started wearing braces sub religio shaver and in a studio in nashville he said you look out rageous. so we wouldn't be where we were out braids bryson not some facebook as you look back on your career what's the one thing that sticks out the most that the biggest impact in your life was there a turning point in your life was there a hit record was there a moment when willie nelson became the willie nelson well there was a time there one when i was working with the right price i played bass and ray process band for a long time and whenever we'd come back to nashville and have a few days off i wrote for perry previews it can so we would go into the studio and record songs that i had written a song that hank cochran had written and harlan howard some of the writers are playing previews it and i go in with the right price van and make the demos with the pay and i've just been traveling with jimmy day play and stealing some of the
11:23 pm
greatest musicians in the world to a felt like my demos that i made were better than the records that i came out with . and i still think it's a rather sprung you get the demos she rajan fisher on facebook once your favorites you have a favorite song was saying. i have a few favorites not really one favorite. do you do the same show every night do thirty forty songs basically and you know if i get a new song out i've got a new song called the wall that when i was talking i want to go about work and getting over books you know and work but i wrote a song called the wall. i took on more than i could handle a bit off more than i could chew i hit the wall and i went off on a roman candle burning everyone i knew i hit the wall oh i love that you recorded with my wife if you were quarter with me what song would we go. to all the girls from here ok we play

11:25 pm
right then it doesn't get any better than that so you can't compare attending and because it's as good as it is a favorite person you'd like to do what with that you haven't. i don't know you know up until a while back i had said people who asked me that question i said well you know i'd like to do a song with barbra streisand and one day we did a song together it's never come out i don't know what happened to i don't know i haven't seen or ever talked to her since then but according to studio recorded it my studio there and also she did she found a writer at the song written for her and i. recorded it with a scratch vocal on it and send it to my studio in austin i went in and put my vocal on and it was great but i haven't heard any more from it and that's been five years ago. wow. and the proudest accomplishment.
11:26 pm
well. i think staying out here playing music all these years of is pretty good at something you regret. i don't do that you know you've turned down something you know so the take and movie role maybe or some got a pill or something. when i know that if you have a night what do you worry about i don't really have a lot of worries up or no do i stay up a lot around sleeping isn't the easiest thing i do it is it's not music what do you think you'd have been. oh well i want to school in baylor for a lot of to study law. and what do you know a lawyer and yeah i majored in dominoes. if you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you bring with you. well i'd bring my guitar and bring my girlfriend and. my rolled me up
