if you like. your ex-girlfriend still plans to rejoice in poetry keep. your age. we post only what we. are to your facebook u. street. breaking news from eastern ukraine a malaysia airlines jet has crashed both sides of the ukraine conflict the ny responsibility so what happened we have extensive breaking news coverage starting now. that evening it's thursday july seventeenth five pm in washington d.c. i'm lindsey france you're watching our team america. a malaysian airlines passenger jet carrying two hundred ninety five people has crashed in eastern ukraine both ukraine government and anti kiev separatists have denied responsibility for downing
5:01 pm
the aircraft flight m.h. seventeen was headed from amsterdam to kuala lumpur today when it went down in the village of bull probable about twenty five miles from the russian ukraine border while asian airlines confirmed it lost contact with the boeing seven seventy seven which was carrying two hundred eighty passengers and fifteen crew members amateur video from the scene shows plumes of smoke and debris from the plane ukraine's military intelligence agency claims it intercepted phone calls on the ground between those responsible for shooting down the plane but it's now up to investigators to figure out who might be responsible if it was indeed shot down urgent questions surround this crash so help us navigate our way through the aviation information that's emerging from it i was joined earlier by aviation expert captain rick date i first asked him about international protocol when it comes to planes flying over conflict zones here's what he had to say. the restrictions as far as the us. u.s.
5:02 pm
airliners are not flying over the ukrainian airspace nor are they flying over iraq or syria now iran they do fly over but to do so you need to have a country why over code and that is printed on your flight plans that the company. gives out to the pilots before the flight and each of those codes are on there and they've already been submitted via that country therefore the pilots would even have to say anything as far as come to transit that area obviously this is a very busy flight corridor for a lot of international flights going to vacation hot spots like bali southeast asia and things like that some people have have talked about flying through the weather in this region for some reason even if there were airspace restrictions for the sake of the passengers would they then reroute to fly through a dangerous territory if if they needed just in the interest of maybe turbulence or
5:03 pm
just passenger safety. you know that you would find another route if they were told not to transfer that area they would not do it ok that's pretty straightforward now when this plane be communicating with them flying over ukraine are there language issues involved i mean it's it's it seems obvious that air traffic control in ukraine might be guiding this flight through is that is that right has got their eyes on this plane. well the russian government the ukrainian government as you cross the for which is the bad andris between the two countries. which is there now i saw a russia quite a few times and they have you know their controller speak pretty pretty good english i mean obviously there is a labor carrier well before we even get to to anything like that obviously there are a lot of fingers being pointed politically in this situation but it really comes down to the investigators trying to pinpoint the exact cause of this what is
5:04 pm
a typical investigator focusing on right now we've all heard about the black box but in this case one piece of evidence to investigators really need to start to solve this mystery first they're going to have to find a way to enter a war zone that went down to the east side of ukraine which is right up to the russian border and answer all the five day stay but that's going to be a conflict just they're trying to get into that airspace or get into that to the wreckage with that conflict taking place but they're going to look at how the wreckage is strong about the area and that way they can tell whether it was taken down with a missile or with a mechanical issue or whatever and in fact only the know what kind of missile to get down once they do get to the wreckage ok so they can pinpoint things pretty carefully there now obviously when these these crashes happen it seems that
5:05 pm
a country in which the crash occurred would usually take until the sighting you know all of the caught in the conflict area as you said the international body investigating this would would then perhaps take over this investigation or would you know what the protocols are in a situation like this where if it's a criminal act that they need to bring in another sort of jurisdiction. i am not completely sure on how they're going to address this issue because they claim to go to the u.k. ukraine but i mean if somebody did fire a missile which country fired the missile now that ukraine must have some kind of a civil aviation. organization that would joan in this particular crash you have to realize they have three airplane crash or three airplanes shot down over there in the last couple of months so they have been quite busy so so somebody is working at that problem ok well we're hearing from malaysian airlines
5:06 pm
they lost contact with the flight what does this mean exactly does that mean the radio contact was lost or they just dropped off the radar would they give that same response of the radar. or radio contact was lost on impact to forces in flight what's an indication to someone at an airline that that the contact was lost and how well malaysian airlines saying they lost contact with the flight and quote the company so that means if they missed a report that they should have may or a current system on the aircraft wasn't producing messages back and forth or a position report was not may and there and there have been some discussion and they've lost radio contact therefore flying from one and one country to another without radio contact can definitely be a problem especially in a war zone so based on what you've seen so far that's obviously right now there's
5:07 pm
a video all over the internet are all over all of the news networks right now has anything stand out to you as peculiar in what we've heard so far about this accident or seen on video. no i just right before this interview i was able to see some video on c.n.n. and it showed. the crash and the airplane is red across a very large area therefore i would have to see something target or it wasn't a character issue so you're saying something that not something that would have happened on board but something outside of the aircraft would have had to interfere with it. you know just from the looks of the wreckage i would it i would venture a guess that a missile was the culprit here. ok we'll definitely be keeping a very close eye on this issue and we'll be coming back to you when we have further questions on the technicalities as this investigation goes through captain rick de
5:08 pm
kock an air consulting expert thank you very much thank you very much. in a very politically tense situation on the ground an investigation now has to proceed artie's peter oliver who's been following the story joined me earlier with more i began by asking him who would be taking over the gathering of the who what and why of the situation here's what he had to say well that's going to become clear over the coming hours and perhaps days who's going to be involved in the the real forensic investigation into what happened here you know we have seen offers of support come from. been offers from i believe here in europe from the netherlands the british government has also said that it would be looking towards trying to help there as well as the united states states which is volunteered its services to the storage fees in kiev who are wanting to try and get
5:09 pm
an investigation under way also the leadership in malaysia the prime minister of malaysia has said he wants to see an investigation immediately basically what we could end up seeing is an awful lot of different national different nationalities different organizations involved ultimately in the investigation but then what it begs the question is will they be able to work together what we're hearing from some sources at the moment is that the first people who are on the ground members of the defense forces that are trying to to bear and they're opposed to the current government in kiev now we are hearing some reports that from the kiev side that they aren't being allowed access to the crash site because there are armed people surrounding it now the black boxes if they are recovered any time soon we understand they may well be they could be the key to telling us exactly what went on here. well this situation at the net it broke it has changed moment by moment
5:10 pm
breakdown for us how this all unfolded today. well this flight was flying from a very regular route between two major international hubs from amsterdam ship all over to kuala lumpur malaysia as it was flying across ukraine in air space the malaysian airlines. official the statement said they lost contact with their flight then we started to see pictures coming through some really dramatic pictures that came through of this plane that went down and some frankly terrifying the gruesome images from the the scene there we then heard from the ukrainian side from kiev that they were that this plane and be that this plane had been shot down by rebels in the east of the country now the rebels the self-defense units they call themselves. immediately said no this wasn't the their work that this was the work
5:11 pm
of my the ukrainian army jet or a ukrainian army on the aircraft installation on the ground so you've got both sides denying any involvement and pointing fingers towards the other. we've also seen. an immediate international outpouring of of of sadness over this incident because it does involve people from all over the world we're hearing that there may be up to as many as twenty three americans that were on board the plane perhaps as many as seventy one dutch nationals that's what's being reported here on german television at the moment the french foreign minister said four of his citizens he understood at least four were on the plane as many as perhaps nine british citizens it's affecting people from all over the world we heard lie to me that putin the russian president put in a phone call to barack obama we also heard him to addressing me malaysian president
5:12 pm
to express his condolences for this so this is what we're seeing at the moment just real everybody and every world leader that we've heard is really been saying. after they express their condolences we need to find out what's going on there still so many unanswered questions at the moment about just what happened as i say we've got finger pointing from the the self-defense forces in the east of the country towards kiev and point finger pointing from kiev towards those self-defense forces with both sides denying any any responsibility for this this real tragedy well of course and it's no surprise either is it that there is massive amounts of finger pointing going on this is a massive hot spot in the world right now and a jet packed with nearly three hundred people has gone down right in the center of it now let's focus on the most the most important part of this the passengers when can we possibly expect the release of a passenger manifest any any list of who was on this plane and what nationalities
5:13 pm
were on this flight. right well it's worth noting that although this is a malaysian air waves flight airlines flight it is also a flight that was operated in conjunction with k l m i've been on the phone to the k l m offices trying to get a hold of them they have saying that they they need to they need more information before they'll be releasing any information about the names or nationalities however what we do have is the gruesome and i can't stress this enough some of it you will see on your t.v. stations and on your acceptable news websites but some of it has appeared on. blogging sites in ukraine and in other countries in russia as well of just a sea of devastation also a lot of passports that have been found there now a lot of dutch passports have been seen tragically for the families of those involved some of these photographs are actually showing the passport picture page
5:14 pm
so you can clearly identify who these people were at this we've seen from the french foreign minister say yes there was french nationals britain has yet to confirm whether those british nationals there but i'm pretty confident i've recognized british passports in amongst the piles that we've seen and also just recently saw a picture that clearly seems to show an australian passport in there amongst many malaysians that were on board and as they say it seems around twenty three you know citizens of the united states as well that were on that flight by the end of it when we find out exactly who was on board this plane it does seem like it's going to be all encompassing around the world these two airports are huge hubs huge huge hubs for international air travel it was a packed flight and it seems it's affected and it's going to continue to affect people in nations all over the world. that was our tease peter over from berlin we want to get you more info on this deadly plane crash now artie's
5:15 pm
a correspondent you're nicholas go is near the russian ukraine border where the flight went down she filed this report just a short time ago. we do know at this point according to the latest information coming from the self-proclaimed people's republic is that. they have recovered at least eight of the twelve data flight data recorders that were on board but perhaps the most important bit of information they can provide right now is the fact that the prime minister of israel the united states is republic has said that. are ready to declare truce with key of four to three days in order to ease the process of investigation and in fact an official investigation has already been launched by kiev officials and there's also information coming in that the e.u. officials have already started demanding that an international investigation into the crash of malaysian air of malaysian airlines flight m.h.
5:16 pm
seventeen also a beginning now of course we're talking about a great tragedy what were almost three hundred people have perished and i would like to remind our viewers that at least eighty of those are reported to be children so obviously a great tragedy international tragedy because there are also reports saying that. the nationals. from tens of european countries of war on board we already know that there has been confirmed french citizens on board the plane obviously that list of the grim list is obviously going to get just longer and of course we're watching exactly what how it's going to develop of course we also heard from the ministries of emergencies russian ministry who are saying that they are ready to assist in an investigation they actually have already filed a special a special request to in order to do so. that was our to correspond near the
