really. early. this afternoon news broke that israel has launched a ground invasion of the gaza strip the development comes just one day after the i.d.f. targeted and killed four palestinian children playing soccer on the beach before the ground invasion even began the death toll in gaza was two hundred thirty one including and higher families that have been wiped out by israeli airstrikes according the international middle east media center this while the majority of the

eighty nine hundred palestinians injured so far are children going to gaza's health ministry or talk about the recent developments i'm joined by our correspondent. thank you so much for coming on rima as a palestinian with tons of friends and family right now in gaza what is your initial reaction to the news that israel's launched the foreign ground invasion scared i'm scared for everybody who is in gaza right now we don't know what's going to happen people were afraid because of the bombs that were basically dropped on them but now the bombs are dropping and there is a ground invasion there's nowhere to go there is the say and there is the borders there is no place for them to go and you just look at what they israeli army says that they're using in this. invasion dozens of infantry oncor artillery units air and naval support. where could they go with these weapons what would the gazans do to face all of these weapons right and even back into dozens of civilians in southern israel build

a wall going in the sea so to prevent them swimming to the homeland you know israeli officials are saying that the intention of this ground offensive is actually to reduce civilian casualties i'm not quite sure how that claim is supposed to be in effect what do you think about it i don't know seriously i mean how would they reduce the civilian casualties when they're invading when they're going with full force to densely populated gaza this is a place where children. and women are afraid of the war and they're running in all of all of you know every direction everywhere you go and there is basically a mini war going on right now and people have nowhere to go to and just made them invading that whole region i don't know really reduces civilian casualties i don't know that's possible right and let's talk about hamas. officials and of course

a lot of other officials as well are saying this is all because hamas refused to accept the conditions of the cease fire what's your response. palestinians were being killed before the whole this new wave of violence started palestinians according to one study one palestinian was being killed every three days didn't stop and the cease fire deal i don't think i don't believe many palestinians including gazans who went out to the streets of took the streets and said that this deal does not represent us just because the conditions of the deal really does not serve the palestinians there are still going to be under one man they're still going to be under siege nothing's going to change for them it really started. israel and for the status quo is going to the situation is going to go back to the status quo before the new wave of violence it wasn't a good life or that it wasn't as if they were living. a good life they were free to do whatever they want they were free to travel they were free to get medical

supplies they were free to get the education that they want this was not the situation in gaza and this is not what they want to go back to living under brutal occupation i mean for decades it's absolutely insane and there's this these settlements that are violation of international law continuing to be built which is really really unfortunate and i think that adds a lot to kind of discontent the state of israel has for. palestinians what do you think about anchors like jake tapper who say that hamas actually invokes a culture of martyrdom and and that because politicians have been elected hamas that somehow they want to die. man stream media just look at the footage that comes out of gaza look at the footage that comes out of palestinian territories the mothers weeping their children parents believing that their kids where killed just the fact that parents wake their kids in the middle of the night to run to safety tells you how much these parents love their kids and the footage tells us all i

mean i don't know where jack tapper gets his and from information from. palestinians don't teach death they teach life right now we're talking about one point seven or so million people it's really really a shame to generalize anyone even hamas want to even if there are a couple select officials same such extreme rhetoric it doesn't encapsulate everyone their remote it's more of just like when when the israeli member of knesset says that we should get all the palestinian mothers because they give birth to all these little snakes that does not really tell that every knesset member holds the same views that does not for me as a journalist i don't look at the israeli society and go oh one person. said this i'm sure that the rest of them say the same thing i don't think journalists should do that right and let's take a look at your talk about the media coverage for a new york times been i think one of the worst not only did they talk about the missile finds the patrons poised for the world cup but now they said the boy is

drawn to gaza beach and into the center of mideast strife i don't know if we have that correct headline really unfortunate it claims that these boys were just drawn into this beach and they just were unfortunate happenstance and i throw the question back at the new york times how are they drawn to the beach how are people drone to a beach how are people drawn into a conflict and if you just look at the response that came from people to the new york times change of headlines it is funny how are people drawn to conflict unless they find themselves right that this will just happen to have a life of its own didn't it they are targeted well as a palestinian watching american news coverage why is it so pro israel i don't understand i mean i guess how is the news and understand that either because palestinians and i talk to a lot of. who see all of the footage that come out of gaza that you know all of these kids who are being killed maimed that doesn't really change people's hearts people's minds what do we have to do do we have just just die in

masses for the people to wake up and see what's going to have to keep doing what we're doing break into this rhetoric telling the truth thank you so much rima really appreciate it. war is raging worldwide whether it's an israeli aerial bombing of gaza an explosion in syria or a drone strike in pakistan there seems to be a commonality among the on season violence the weapons being used almost always carry the seal of the united states not that that should come as a surprise considering how the u.s. is. the tory is for its military industrial complex and is the premier manufacturer and exporter of weapons of war in fact the us spends more on defense than countries of the next ten highest budgets combined yet with so much u.s. artillery being pumped into practically every country in the world it's nearly

impossible prevent to prevent american armament from ending up in the wrong hands and wouldn't you know it just this week it was reported that the islamic militant group isis effectively captured fifty two american made artillery cannons with a price tag of a half a million dollars each that's right the weapons in question are m one ninety eight howitzers capable of showing targets up to twenty miles away these massive cannons also have g.p.s. targeting systems meaning that as eyes this continues its bombardment through central iraq its force will only be stronger but isis fighters aren't the only ones benefiting from u.s. arms recently i reported that as the latest siege on gaza continues to unfold israel has been using experimental weapons on palestinians dense and metal explosives or die and weapons have been used by israel against palestinians before thanks in part to the u.s. air force which developed the weapon technology back in two thousand and six before sharing it with america's closest ally in the middle east and weapons create

barbarism putting tear gas canisters and grenades were all american made it. beyond the middle east though militant groups in africa are also benefiting from u.s. weapons that are apparently just up for grabs as western forces built up counterterrorism operations in countries like marchand niger and mali and elsewhere last year defense news reported that militia fighters raided a libyan base that housed a u.s. weapons arsenal by sunrise fighters and stolen several u.s. military vehicles and hundreds of u.s. made automatic weapons and equipment but of course none of this is new because whether directly or indirectly there are too many instances to count where u.s. weapons have made it into the hands or so called adversaries like in the one nine hundred eighty s. when u.s. weapons were provided to soldiers in iraq and panama as well as so-called freedom fighters in afghanistan who would later become members of the taliban and al qaeda

look nothing is more an odds with america's alleged crusade to rid the world of terrorists than the fact that america continues to be the world's leader and arming the world as long as this is the case this strategy will only continue to empower human rights abusers and cause widespread death and destruction all stamped with made in the usa. coming up a break down some of those botched police stings in recent history stick around. washington well as submissive to a degree is being suggested in the latest reason that the media. and then when the prophecy of having to do that actually back to me doesn't do too much for ad revenue my new tech agriculture giant teeth on a seventy six year old american farmer in the studio fallout do you think this is going to create for the cia do you think this is what's triggering the return to so

are justified it seems hard to believe that the police acted within the law and every single case especially instances where a sting operation has gone horribly wrong resulting in multiple deaths take for example the case of rosendo betancourt police informant who led officers to entrap a group of home invaders in miami dade county in two thousand and eleven another raid failed but recently released infrared footage shows officers cornering the armed ringleader of the group and firing fifty two rounds into his body after all was said and done for mentally that couldn't betancourt the very informant who actually reached out to the officers in the first place offering to help them apprehend. the criminals regardless of the footage and the testimony of prosecutors in the case said there was simply not enough evidence to charge the officers involved with any crime now three years after the fact miami dade county will be paying out six hundred thousand dollars of the families of three men killed by

police of course not admitting any liability but examples of police cleaning up their tracks following one or more of the wrongful executions abound like the case of saul colo seen virginia man who often play small sporting bets with friends nothing too crazy maybe fifty or one hundred dollars here and there that is until closely met fairfax police detective david boca the officer before ended closely making bets with him and his friends slowly raising the stakes eventually encouraging him to bet a two thousand dollars bet in a single day an amount that could land him a criminal charge under virginia's vice laws after taking the bed officer. assembled a swat team and raided cosies home close he walked outside to meet who he thought was his friend he received the fatal shot to the heart and static and the officer claimed his gun misfired however cornered the victim's friends and family so closely was essentially executed for gambling now sadly because of the misguided policies that lead to these poorly executed raids instances like these happen all

too often even though many states have moved to criminalize and even legalize small amounts of illicit drugs federal grant still reward local police for meeting a certain number of drug arrests this is incentive enough for police to seek out nonviolent drug offenders often time the most vulnerable in society going undercover sting in southern california that seemed more like an episode of twenty one st adult officers pretended to be high school students attended class participated in school activities and tried to get their classmates to sell them drugs vice highlights how police singled out quote freaks and geeks kids that didn't quite fit in and force them to search out drugs and trapping themselves in the process. yes the sting resulted in over twenty arrests many of which were special needs students who would have never been seeking out drugs were not they encourage mint of cops one of the boys arrested was jesse snodgrass an autistic teenager who now suffers from p.t.s.d. after a police officer pretending to be as friend arrested him for marijuana possession

really not only in the boy's arrest but expulsion from his high school the worst part of all is that former l.a.p.d. officers even admit that these kind of tactics are encouraged since more drug arrests means more federal funding so until we address the need to abolish the failed drug war and and these invasive and course of tactics average people will continue to be swept up in the dragnet of an overly militarized and that and deadly police force. facebook has become an integral part of people's lives with over a billion users registered the social media giant is constantly competing with google as the number one visited site in the entire world people become so accustomed to using the networking platform to post updates about their private

private lives and keep in close contact with their friends and family but the popular online directory is also fallen under heavy scrutiny but it's lack of privacy protections and cooperation with the u.s. government in the wake of the leaks made by n.s.a. whistleblower edward snowden however now the mega corporation is taking its measures of control one step further by hiring police. facebook is now funding the salary of mary ferguson it eight year veteran of the menlo park police force the social network giant is putting up one hundred ninety four thousand dollars for her pay benefits and related costs for the next three years she will focus on at risk youth in the area and help businesses plan for emergencies menlo park police chief bob johnson says facebook pays the bills but that's all. yes facebook now has police on its payroll and hopes by so why are more people outraged over the extent of private sector surveillance and occupying silicon valley earlier i was joined by

journalist and host of media rich radio robbie martin and i started by asking him just that. thank you i think the the most prominent reason is that most people still view these silicon valley companies as benign. public utilities really convenient you know services that aren't necessarily. corporations that are out to exploit our private data and you know the u.s. government is a good magnet for expressing all this outrage and projecting all this you know unabashed evil towards but i think for some reason silicon valley's companies were originally viewed as cute kid sort of moral and that faith has yet to be broken among most their users and this is even after the n.s.a. prism revelations. undeniably confirms you know one hundred percent proved

that the n.s.a. and u.s. government was working hand in glove with a lot of these companies like google facebook apple microsoft and yeah i know and before we get into these specific companies silicon valley was actually started as an arm of the military industrial complex talk about how it came to be and why. well this is this is great talk that ironically enough was done on the google campus before they became a public company noam chomsky used to do public talks there but there was one really good public talk called the secret history of south silicon valley the went through the history of how a guy who was the head of the u.s. electronic warfare signals intelligence division during world war two named fred terman at stanford he actually has all these start up companies through his students he essentially fast tracked a bunch of students to graduation way faster than they would have graduated normally. and he was doing it based on all this government seed money that was

given to him by the defense industry to help him essentially do weapons research at stand. and this happened immediately afterward too and eventually this sort of lead in to what dominated most of the cold war which was a race of technology between the soviet union the united states let's talk about google robbie what effect is this company having on the bay area at large and why should we be wary of its don't be evil slogan. well i think that people in the bay area they have this glaring blind spot in terms of what they're expressing their outrage about we've seen the damn crack a little bit in in terms of outrage towards google in the last year with you know with anger towards glass holes and rent hikes in san francisco which led to the google buzz blockades but i still think that people in general see google like they do a lot of other silicon valley companies as somehow being more ethical and more focused

on the public good then that what we perceive is the general corporatocracy or you know sort of the all the guards who rule this country and even though it's been proven time and time again that they don't care about our privacy. i mean google has an extremely cozy relationship and is almost practically can joined with the n.s.a. and u.s. government there is almost no difference between when we hand over data to google compared to when we handed over to the us government google publicly propose using your computer microphones in two thousand and six and they also hand over data for ninety four percent of u.s. law requests according to their own records i just talked about the facebook cop and his introduction do you think it's strange that facebook is now pain policies officers to help patrol the city ends on profiles mark zuckerberg clearly getting a little bit more paranoid about his own privacy and protection you know as he

grows older. and he recently bought the five addison houses around him and so i think that you know this is just going along similar lines he wants to you know curry favor with and essentially buy out the police force of us a relatively small city menlo park and he's probably seen what apple's did in the success they have had of essentially controlling the city that they're headquartered in but he's taken it a step further and actually is subsidizing a police officer who also uses facebook to spy on people too so it's not really clear how much access this officer of the police there have to the facebook profiles but that's another thing where it's a gray area there's a gray area on facebook of what's private what's not so it's very unclear exactly what kind of access facebook gives not just the n.s.a. the u.s. government but also local police their facebook database right and we just found out of course that facebook was manipulating its users

a motional states where the mass psychological experimentation and moreover the study was funded and part by the department of defense robert i mean clearly this militarization of social sciences is very troublesome indeed and what about apple robbie what's your beef. the company that designed such good looking products they were exclusively using eighteen t. is a carrier up until about two years ago as we know from our klein's whistleblowing eighteen key that the n.s.a. was her eighteenth he was essentially allowing the n.s.a. to copy one hundred percent of their internet traffic and mirror it so that a whole time when i phones were exploited or exploding the n.s.a. was just grabbing all the data off of them because it was all the t.n.t. . did the c.e.o. of apple also dismissed the prison revelations and claims that the n.s.a. doesn't have a back door to their products however in the jacob apple bomb talk where he revealed new in a state documents he prove that in the n.s.a.

his own words they have a one hundred percent success rate in gaining access to i.o.'s devices remotely which include i pads and i phones and they even have a code name for this called drop out sheep so i think that we just have to be really careful and trusting companies even companies like apple who still seeing you know like this really awesome company that does all these great things and making our lives we need to stop looking at them in that way right i mean the i tunes stuff alone is awful the way that they've monopolized music the way that they have you know this patent on a rounded edges and and the app consolidation and all of these things that is really troublesome in the fact that you cannot take your battery out of a i phone and you can hit you're going to have it turned on wherever you are track every hour that's creepy but robbie i have an i phone what do you say to people who say you're hypocritical because you use facebook and you use apple products so you can't really criticize these companies. well i think that's

a really great point and i think that's part of the reason why a lot of people are focusing more of their outrage towards the u.s. government specifically and not towards these companies but my philosophy on that is just because we use these products or services it doesn't mean that we shouldn't put immense pressure on these same companies and corporations and the people that run them the opposite should be true that because many of these corporations are viewed as benign public utilities more activists minored minded users of them like you or myself should fight extremely hard to deserve our privacy rights on them and to essentially put heat on these corporations and try to get them to change their behavior because it's an completely unacceptable right and using the tools against them i mean we have to use facebook because they're so integrated in our lives i had we have to use twitter to promote these issues to spread awareness about the privacy erosions unfortunately you and i just conducted a two hour a podcast on this issue on media i know they put together an action guide as well

for people about what they can do is there anything that you can offer people here about tools of action we have about thirty seconds left. well what you just said i mean there are ways to if you completely opt out of the system and you haven't been using privacy tools for the whole time you've been on the internet you're sensually not protesting because that mitigated trail is already there for you so the best you can do is delete your future a future mitigated trail that's not good enough i think that people should use their own tools against them use google maps to mobilize civil disobedience against google use facebook against to start protest groups and mobilize actions against facebook use i phones to coordinate protests over twitter against apple i mean using these companies tools against them were actually increase the power of a protest movement against silicon valley and i think that some to. we all need to remember that we don't need to be absolute just robin martin media or it's
