tv Larry King Now RT August 12, 2014 9:00pm-9:30pm EDT
9:00 pm
today on larry king now they are the rangers gold and red one quest they were in the final with the kings was a lock in the game you need like it's a fast game and you need luck in every game i think in and sometimes you have it sometimes you don't belong times you're in it on playing in new york i think it's the perfect mix of being in the spotlight but then get a break from it and a lot of it is you know it's not the biggest sport for a little is a new yorker so when i think's going on so you can you're in there for a little bit and then you kind of disappear and live a pretty normal life which is nice on his love of fashion it's about wearing what you feel like to feel good about plus who's the older right here how many minutes board in the head it's forty minutes it was time that i was supposed to come first
9:01 pm
but he kicked me in the wrong direction all next on larry king now. welcome to larry came out with both of us for a long time the great hockey goalie had a glenn close does our special guest he's the new york rangers goaltender he's dubbed the king is rookie season in the n.h.l. as when he got that name he's an olympic gold medalist three time all-star two thousand and twelve as in the trophy winner awarded the best guys in hockey league goaltender is the founder of the hundred one quiz foundation to create positive change in the laws of children through education music and sports and most recently a twenty fourteen as we nominate a nominee rabbit for the best n.h.l. player congratulations on the nominations thanks very much is is the goaltender of the war skater. when you were
9:02 pm
a kid would do they say you play gold. why would you well be a gold watch some players might say that i think differently i think for me what it really inspired me early on was the responsibility but probably also the quitman as a little kid i thought it was just amazing looking interesting looking and heavy heavy but still there's something about it the mask in the gloves and pads and that was all the little bit of the quarterback or be pitcher pitcher more the pitcher the catch of acquitting baseboards close i think it's a unique position because you're on a team it's a team sport but it seemed time you're by yourself for the most part of the game you do your own thing you focus on the old game and the all the minutes yeah you do it so it's a different approach i think is specially mentally than if you compared to defensemen for the rangers the entire nine years or with the rangers they draft you
9:03 pm
they did. a round seventh round who yeah oh it was a late one. and my brother he went in the third round for dallas and i was a forward right it was a forward he's still playing but. i thought i would end up in dallas in the sixth round the because we talked to them about maybe going there if i was still around but they didn't pick me and then the some of them went to new york and what do you think though about coming to new york the most famous city. i think my last year played in sweden this is all four or five people kept telling me i think the york will fit you you will like it and it's a good challenge for you i wasn't sure what they were talking about but my first year in new york i kind of understood where we were coming from and. i love it you know the day one day we're going to say shinji me so well and the city you know it's just exciting to be there it's definitely. unsing sometimes but. if you love
9:04 pm
to compete and know the new yorker knows the sports they do and even they would have played in times if they booed you deserve to be right in the well the first time i watched the rangers game they booed off the entire team after the game that was my first moment watching raider akio was like wow this is this can be a scary place but at the same time. you know when you do well i don't think there's a better place to play some of these over tough times on me or. i think it's a lot tougher to come in as a big name for me personally i came in as a nobody you know i had some some good years in sweden but coming to new york nobody really knew. one o'clock was was so i just had to start from the beginning again when did you know you were good. good question i don't know iran honed thirteen fourteen fifteen there a lot of people you have talent but you know it's
9:05 pm
a long way to go. but. i always kept dreaming that you know one day my play for the national team or for my team in sweden from under it's called that was my biggest dream and then you still play with i played there before i came to new york and my brothers back there playing now but you don't go buy them play anymore no no now it's only in new york full time so you play for the national team i do. most in the olympics world championships usually where we're in the playoffs still with the rangers so it's hard to leave and then play three hundred but that's that's a really proud moment when you go out and play for you dudden every award possible that you can get as a goalie of how you want to stay with the rangers for a. the reverend i believe does yeah and last year you know i resigned with the team and it was a big priority for me and i spent nine years there and to get it chance now to to play your entire career for one team that was important to me and i'm happy that
9:06 pm
you know they believe in maple design i def and believe in them and in america within you even though they show up every game the rangers every seat is taken at every ranger game it's always been that way the ranges always sell out is still the fourth sport in america right best football baseball football does that bother you at all or is that the way it is because in europe that's not true right well now if you just accept that and it's obviously different when you go to canada and play it that we're hockey is everything but playing in new york i think it's the perfect mix of being in the spotlight but then get a break from it and a lot of it because you know it's not the biggest sport but also because in new york or so when i think's going on so you can you're in there for a little bit and then you kind of disappear and live a pretty normal life which is nice taking the final with they can use the rangers finally get to the finals of the great and you had a great while i thought to give what do you miss because that would if he gets that
9:07 pm
goal when second overtime yeah here we had two two second overtime games here in l.a. . you know it's tough when the season ends and and. you go from a high pressure situation in so much adrenaline to nothing did a lot in a way that what do you think was a look in the game you need like it's a fast game and you need luck in every game i think and sometimes you have it sometimes you don't belong at times you're in it but it misses by an inch yeah and you know you will always talk but you have to earn it by making good decisions and and work hard and i thought they play really well the kings stay there a great team and we fought until the end there but with a little bit more of luck i think it could have been a different series no question the hardest part is the pressure right or do you put that away. for a goalie i would say so yes it's how you think it's how you handle expectations from yourself from your teammates and especially the fans and the entire
9:08 pm
organization so that's why when you play in big games the pressure adds up and i think the difference between doing well and not doing well is how you manage that are farmed out stuff or or not. they're fun you know it's a challenge to fit to to go up against the best players because a lot of times they send out the best player on the team and as a goalie you have a big say in you're going to win or lose so. you have an affinity for the soccer goalie has got a bigger net bigger now a few shots still i was watching the world cup a lot in the. five to ten shots a game it was all pros jugs or break a record yeah that's right you play in new york with another great athlete derek jeter you know and i don't know no. but obviously coming to new york and and see him you know how he interacts with other people and the way he's been putting up
9:09 pm
his numbers i mean it's so impressive to see whether sport you plays tennis right polo tennis yeah you're good. at the passer you compared to but. i can play a little bit you play with magen role sometimes that is good is pushing me pretty good there is a person off season when i see him other than his tennis facility. upper east side either in new york but he's a fun character you know is he's a riot i want to get to the world of fashion with you in fashion when you were a kid we're going to kid it was the shoppers no not at all and i don't know i think between sixteen and twenty two. a time where i tried a lot of different things a lot of different looks and made a lot of mistakes but you try to learn from that i guess and. coming to new york obviously it's one of the best places to be when it comes to fashion and to see
9:10 pm
different styles what is where because you obviously have sweat out of the old i don't know if we do though i mean it's a pretty funny it's a look it's a look yeah and. i'm pretty consistent with the way i dress i would say some people maybe like it some people don't care if you like now you're wearing a slim yeah well i live it off you're aware european cuts very nice and a lot of european brands i get i took some heat early on nine years ago when i came to the league i remember guys were asking about my suits and my ties and if they were too tight too skinny but. i think the last five six years that been changing a little bit this is sort of a look you have today well the. yeah while i dress in a suit a lot we have to wear sue when we travel to games on the roof there were no tie
9:11 pm
though and we just travel by going to the game we have to wear ties as well so five days a week we're in a suit for pretty comfortable wearing one let's see another one. of the yeah here there's a lot more rock n roll in all of music i play guitar still a par one part of me loves being dressed up in a tuxedo or soup but then there's a part of me that. more of a rock n roll guy you have your own clothing line. we're doing like a fanbase clothing line right now it's called crown collection and raise money for charity and who are heirs of more and more rock n roll. full confortable about us was i kind of go a little mix there does your wife affect what you wear. she can comment on it she doesn't time what to wear but when i'm done you know before we walk out the door she might say maybe skip that score freeze up with you. and not often know but
9:12 pm
she's a great person when it comes to gifts she always buys great gifts and she has a good good hand for that you other thing too wearing braces maybe yeah maybe the other they're never in the in or they out they were definitely in couple of years ago definitely you know the hipsters were wearing them i want them for thirty by that zero always in that realm but i mean that's your look but that was i got rid of this look you did for television and you've been very consistent with it is that important consistency call you inconsistent i think when it comes to fashion it's not important no it's about where and what you feel like and just feel good about it you have to feel good in it right for me yes you know i. walk into a game for example if i if i were a suit then i feel good and you know it. i just like showing up to the game and that's when the rumors go on a trip less then you might have a six game road trip right possible what's ghostwrote be doing you take
9:13 pm
a while he begs you to. reply but i've had to so yeah though is while the baghdad public says i always go with a lot of ties still a lot i like options always too many ties and guys make fun of it but. in a cup less assures a couple extra suits but i always go lower board on the on the ties twinning out a way to see what's coming and reckon it. was a. very hard to take. that
9:15 pm
we're back we have a special guest joining us joel. and rick's identical twin brother and captain of the swedish hockey team for a wonder he played three years in the n.h.l. as a forward why were you a goalie. wanted to be in the net when we grew up so and just a bit you played against each other three seasons right yeah exactly when i played in dallas it was scored on and i didn't. just in practice just in brackets but it was a special games for short to play against him and see him on the other side of the on the was it different when he was coming in i was so nervous that that game because it was such a build up we played together for sixteen years and suddenly we were playing
9:16 pm
against each other for the first time and i was just weird and nerve wracking who's the older right here how many minutes boarding the hats the forty minute i was time there i was supposed to come first but he kicked me in the wrong direction it. was your father an athlete. he was a great skier ski instructor and that was his passion i think but no hockey there we were competitive as kids every day everything was a competition for us so it's right some tough battles when we're grew up but it's it's been good for us you live in new york you live in sweden yes but you are close we are i mean growing up we did everything together we really did and. you know talking about being jealous or we always inspired to each other to work harder growing up with the other one had more success you know it inspired the other guy
9:17 pm
to work harder and we played on the same team for like i said sixteen years and we were tracked to do the same kind of girl. like the same kind of foods yeah i mean up there were fifteen sixteen we were were like one person almost and it was like the same stuff did the same same stuff every day so after we got more i will change . oh we're going to play a little game we're going to have hendrick put on headphones so you can hear just put on you listen to some music and i'm going to as joel some questions and see if you can come up with comparable answers joel what was an incident or situation got you both in trouble as kids are teenagers. well and in happen we're often but one thing we start started a small fire. when we go up it was in the house outside the house it was under control after half an hour or so nothing happened but i remember
9:18 pm
our parents were really upset about it what do you think and rick will say this is greatest hockey achievement. probably the best known troll for me and he's. in playing so well on the whole season and win the trophy for the best goal it's yours for him and who is my ca you or him right i would say him i'm very . organized at all and. on time all the time is a little bit more really late sometimes i use into fashion as i'm not as much and i will switch. ok what was an incident or a situation the dutch were both in trouble as kids oh boy. always getting told we're fighting with our sister. he didn't say that he worked up
9:19 pm
an incident one incident that we got in trouble for ok i think he's been hit with too many. he set a fire you started oh yeah i forgot about that one. kid that's what kind of got about what he will say was your greatest hockey achievement. on making it to then it's one thing but winning the best intro fees comes as you go is who is messy a you. me you know he was a guy taking care of the apartment on with it he said that two out of three you forgot the fiat oh like i said i was not a good man really that's why i put it behind me is like a goalie habit now you put up with checking twins you got two out of three two or three now whereas q what is joel's most proud moment on the ice
9:20 pm
i think winning the world championships for things we didn't twice what is favorite childhood memory. going to gotham bergen watch for on the play for the first time as a kid who is quicker reflexes your jaw me ok put a bug off or it. those quick he got in fast what's your proudest moment on the ice. probably winning. the league back home in sweden for lumber that's one team that's what you said right that you know either that i said the world championships for team sweden but it's a championship at its core who they were joe the memory. i think that so many. sticks out we went down to the
9:21 pm
golf the bergen. did a shoot out in our favorite arena and died right yeah all we watched for the first time in that same time we went to got them with and who was quicker reflexes on the ice you were him. i would say him. you're right on that what was the worst why did you ever play games with girls but that is really a good date and he'd go we hated it when people didn't recognize us you know we were like one person up until sixteen it was like joel and hundred joiner itself during practice and tricking people was not really fun for us it was almost like the opposite we wanted that to to see who was who so your parents always tell who who is. not always. a lot always a always dressed in blue and jaws and red like early on the first years in can the
9:22 pm
garden what's this tell me about the lawn goes foundation yeah i started my own foundation last year i've been working with the garden of dreams foundations for i think nine years now and i felt like there's more to do and i also want to reach people back home as we did so i saw an opportunity to start my own foundation and. i think my focus is wellness and and education and most of her kids so i think being in our position where we can reach out to so many people and we don't have to do damage work you know with our names and and the people that we know in the business we are. i think we have a great opportunity to try to make a difference that you like working with kids i do and it's fun for different reasons you know it's fun to just meet them and interact with them and see their reactions but it also gives you perspective on a lot of things that i do and you know puts so much focus into hockey and it's
9:23 pm
a lot of pressure and then you go and spend an afternoon with a bunch of kids that might be struggling with that illness or something and it just makes you realize that it's just a game and there's more things to in life and so it helps me for sure we have some social media questions john hausen facebook we were aware of the puck right behind your skate in game four of the finals now and i was actually screaming at the rough to blow the whistle i was really upset he didn't blow the whistle and then. and. i think twenty seconds later i watched the big screen and i saw the park behind me sell the a made it restored. i try not to you know as a goal you try to focus on the things you can't control and the referees obviously not one of them but i'm tired of it have a heart and i hate them. george loizzo seven on instagram who wins in the arm wrestling match to a brother i have to say jaw is
9:24 pm
a little stronger than me really yeah yeah amesbury eighty three on twitter what are your thoughts on the goalie restricted area and travers oid. for me i think it's pretty good i'm not a great skater or apocalypso to be limited just around the net worths are pretty good for me at k. harris ten seventy three the last person you got to see on the breakaway was seconds left i must say the best. breakaway guy i met so far is really a covert check in our place in russia though but for the years he played in the league he scored a lot of those missile best shot the hardest it's up there you can really fire the park and it's always a challenge trying to stop at crazy x. three what's one thing all young goalies with big n.h.l. dream should know. there's no shortcuts you just have to work really hard and. have the passion for it at k.d.
9:25 pm
brock why do you tape your wrists and wear white gloves under your glove and blocker. old injury on me and i start taping my hand after that and then i just get so used to still do it same with my fingers. the gloves you know they're wearing them when i was probably seventeen eighteen i just feel like they get better grip especially when you sweat a lot during the game because they really want so that's why the lazio four sixteen your favorite moment from the lessees and twenty thirteen twenty fourteen. winning the conference final probably playing at yankee stadium twice owed us on going till the early like god or hockey it's such a great experience and for years you know we were talking about maybe we had an option to play new york in this year we played twice yankee stadium and stuff and memory of life so i really enjoyed it you hear the crowd you do sometimes you take it in sometimes you try to block it at the pens that this scream now little
9:26 pm

9:27 pm
a tough place to play though for some reason a great fan is great building great fans always fun to play there it is for some reason i haven't won many games in there the last couple years but his teammate fastest teammate carl how swedish guy funny is teammate. matzoh cruel but as a prank ever pulled in the locker room. well the did a good one on me couple years ago if they do i just bought a new car and we had a golf tournament it was pre-season and i came out summaries i dropped my key while we were eating so the guys when i moved my car i had for a week so obviously it was like i'm my baby and i come out and it's gone and the sister freaking out and swearing all that and i realize they just moved around it was right by me and their love that was going to cause it. it was a muscle rowdy. favorite hobby outside of hockey.
